An ab initio study was performed in clusters up to four H(2)S molecules and benzene using calculations at MP26-31+G(*) and MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ levels. Differences between both sets of calculations show the importance of using large basis sets to describe the intermolecular interactions in this system. The obtained binding energies reflect that benzene has not the same behavior in H(2)S as in water, pointing to a higher solubility of this molecule in H(2)S than in water. The Bz-cluster binding energy was fitted to an asymptotic representation with a maximum value of the energy of -8.00 kcal/mol that converges in a cluster with 12 H(2)S molecules. The obtained intermolecular distance in the Bz-H(2)S dimer is similar to the experimental value; however, the difference is much larger for the angles defining the orientation. The influence of benzene produces a distortion of the (H(2)S)(n) clusters, so the intermolecular distances change with regard to the (H(2)S)(n) isolated clusters. Frequency shifts are larger in clusters with benzene than without it. In the smallest clusters the shift associated to the stretching of the S-H bonded to benzene is the largest one, but for the cluster with three H(2)S molecules this stretching is combined with the other S-H stretching of the molecule so the resulting shift is not the largest one.  相似文献

The characteristics of the interaction between the pi cloud of naphthalene and up to two H2O or H2S molecules were studied. Calculations show that clusters formed by naphthalene and one H2O or H2S molecule have similar geometric features, and also present similar interaction energies. Our best estimates for the interaction energy amount to -2.95 and -2.92 kcal/mol for H2O and H2S, respectively, as obtained with the CCSD(T) method. Calculations at the MP2 level employing large basis sets should be avoided because they produce highly overestimated interaction energies, especially for hydrogen sulfide complexes. The MPWB1K functional, however, provides values pretty similar to those obtained with the CCSD(T) method. Although the magnitude of the interaction is similar with both H2X molecules, its nature is somewhat different: the H2O complex presents electrostatic and dispersion contributions of similar magnitude, whereas for H2S the interaction is dominated by dispersion. In clusters containing two H2X molecules several minima were characterized. In water clusters, the total interaction energy is dominated by the presence of a O-H...O hydrogen bond and, as a consequence, structures where this contact is present are the most stable. However, clusters containing H2S show structures with no interaction between H2S moieties which are as stable as the hydrogen bonded ones, because they allow an optimal H2S...naphthalene interaction, which is stronger than the S-H...S contact. Therefore it is possible that in larger polycycles hydrogen sulfide molecules will be spread onto the surface maximizing S-H...pi interactions rather than aggregated, forming H2S clusters.  相似文献

The adsorption of water (D(2)O) molecules on Rh(111) at 20 K was investigated using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). At the initial stage of adsorption, water molecules exist as monomers on Rh(111). With increasing water coverage, monomers aggregate into dimers, larger clusters (n = 3-6), and two-dimensional (2D) islands. Further exposure of water molecules leads to the formation of three-dimensional (3D) water islands and finally to a bulk amorphous ice layer. Upon heating, the monomer and dimer species thermally migrate on the surface and aggregate to form larger clusters and 2D islands. Based on the temperature dependence of OD stretching peaks, we succeeded in distinguishing water molecules inside 2D islands from those at the edge of 2D islands. From the comparison with the previous vibrational spectra of water clusters on other metal surfaces, we conclude that the number of water molecules at the edge of 2D islands is comparable with that of water molecules inside 2D islands on the Rh(111) surface at 20 K. This indicates that the surface migration of water molecules on Rh(111) is hindered as compared with the cases on Pt(111) and Ni(111) and thus the size of 2D islands on Rh(111) is relatively small.  相似文献

The potential energy surface for the unimolecular decomposition of thiophenol (C(6)H(5)SH) is mapped out at two theoretical levels; BB1K/GTlarge and QCISD(T)/6-311+G(2d,p)//MP2/6-31G(d,p). Calculated reaction rate constants at the high pressure limit indicate that the major initial channel is the formation of C(6)H(6)S at all temperatures. Above 1000 K, the contribution from direct fission of the S-H bond becomes important. Other decomposition channels, including expulsion of H(2) and H(2)S are of negligible importance. The formation of C(6)H(6)S is predicted to be strong-pressure dependent above 900 K. Further decomposition of C(6)H(6)S produces CS and C(5)H(6). Overall, despite the significant difference in bond dissociation, i.e., 8-9 kcal/mol between the S-H bond in thiophenol and the O-H bond in phenol, H migration at the ortho position in the two molecules represents the most accessible initial channel.  相似文献

We studied the interaction between benzene thiol and thiolate molecules, and gold clusters made of 1 to 3 atoms, by means of ab initio density functional theory in the local density approximation. We find that the thiolate is energetically more stable than the thiol, however the process of detachment of H from the thiol appears to be possibly mediated by the intermediate step of H chemisorption on Au. Cleavage of the S-H bond is accompanied by a 90 degrees rotation of the molecule around the S-Au bond, showing a strong steric specificity. Such a rotation is induced by the relative energy shift of the S atom p orbitals with respect to the benzene pi ring and the Au d orbitals. By analyzing the correlation of the bond energy, bond lengths, and HOMO-LUMO gap with the number of S-Au bonds, we find that the thiolate S atom appears to prefer a low-coordination condition on Au clusters.  相似文献

A new version of the ab initio gradient embedded genetic algorithm (GEGA) program for finding the global minima on the potential energy surface (PES) of mixed clusters formed by molecules and atoms is reported. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated on the neutral H·(H(2)O)(n) (n = 1-4) clusters, that is, a radical H atom solvated in 1-4 water molecules. These clusters are of a fundamental interest. The solvated hydrogen atom forms during photochemical events in water, or during scavenging of solvated electrons by acids, and transiently exists in biological systems and possibly in inclusion complexes in the deep ocean and in the ice shield of earth. The processes associated with its existence are intriguingly complex, however, and have been the subject of decades-long debates. Using GEGA, we explicate the apparently extreme structural diversity in the H·(H(2)O)(n) (n = 1-4) clusters. All considered clusters have four basic structural types: type I, where the H radical is weakly coordinated to the oxygen atom of one of the water molecules; type II, where H is weakly coordinated to a H atom of one of the water molecules; type III, consisting of H(2), the OH radical, and n - 1 H(2)O molecules; and type IV, consisting of H(3)O and n - 1 H(2)O. There are myriads of isomers of all four types. The lowest energy species of types I and II are the isoenergetic global minima. H·(H(2)O)(n) clusters appear to be a challenging case for GEGA because they have many shallow minima close in energy some of which are significantly less stable than the global minimum. Additionally, the global minima themselves have high structural degeneracy, they are only weakly bound, and they are prone to dissociation. GEGA performed exceptionally well in finding both the global and the low-energy local minima that were subsequently confirmed at higher levels of theory.  相似文献

A method is presented for depositing mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of dodecanethiol (C12) and 4'-methyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4-butane (H3C-C6H4-C6H4-(CH2)4-SH, BP4) by insertion of BP4 into a closely packed SAM of dodecanethiol on Au(111). Insertion takes place at defect sites such as domain boundaries or etch pits in the gold surface that are characteristic of C12 monolayers on gold. With a lower probability, insertion also occurs beside defect sites inside dodecanethiol domains. Insertion at defect sites results in domains of BP4, whereas insertion into C12 domains leads to isolated BP4 molecules. The isolated BP4 molecules are shown not to move at room temperature. By comparing the apparent height of the isolated BP4 molecules and BP4 domains, it is proposed that the isolated molecules have the same conformation as in the full-coverage phase. A simple two-layer model is proposed to characterize the current transport through BP4. The decay constant beta for the phenylene groups is deduced from the apparent STM heights of the inserted BP4 islands compared to the STM heights of the C12 closely packed monolayers.  相似文献

The penetration behavior of thermally evaporated Au on S(CH(2))(15)CH(3), S(CH(2))(15)CO(2)CH(3), S(CH(2))(15)CO(2)H, K-modified S(CH(2))(15)CO(2)CH(3), and K-modified S(CH(2))(15)CO(2)H self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on Au substrates is investigated. Gold is a particularly interesting metal since vapor-deposited Au atoms are known to pass through alkanethiolate SAMs on Au{111} substrates at room temperature. Here we show that it is possible to control Au penetration by adjusting the interactions between terminal groups. It is found that Au atoms evenly penetrate into the CH(3) and CO(2)CH(3) films, forming smooth buried layers below the organic thin films. For the CO(2)H film, although Au atoms can still penetrate through it, filaments and mushroomlike clusters form due to H-bonding between film molecules. In the case of the K-modified CO(2)CH(3) or CO(2)H films, however, most Au atoms form islands at the vacuum interface. These results suggest that van der Waals forces and H-bonds are not strong enough to block Au from going through but that ionic interactions are able to block Au penetration. The measurements were performed primarily using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The combination of these highly complementary probes provides a very useful strategy for the study of metal atom behavior on SAMs.  相似文献

Clusters of tetracene molecules with different numbers of attached (Ar)(N), (Ne)(N) and (H(2))(N) particles (N = 1-2000) are assembled inside superfluid He nanodroplets and studied via laser-induced fluorescence. The frequency shift of the fluorescence spectrum of the tetracene molecules is studied as a function of cluster size and pickup order of tetracene and cluster species. For (Ar)(N) and (Ne)(N) clusters, our results indicate that the tetracene molecules reside inside the clusters when tetracene is captured by the He nanodroplet before the cluster species; conversely, the tetracene molecules stay on the surface of the clusters when tetracene is captured after the cluster species. In the case of (H(2))(N) clusters, however, tetracene molecules reside inside the (H(2))(N) clusters irrespective of the pickup order. We conclude that (Ar)(N) and (Ne)(N) clusters are rigid at T = 0.38 K, while (H(2))(N) clusters of up to N = 2000 remain fluxional at the same temperature. The results may also indicate the occurrence of heterogeneous nucleation of the (H(2))(N) clusters, which is induced by the interaction with tetracene chromophore molecules.  相似文献

There are conflicting reports on the origin of the effect of Y substituents on the S-H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) in 4-Y-substituted thiophenols, 4-YC(6)H(4)S-H. The differences in S-H BDEs, [4-YC(6)H(4)S-H] - [C(6)H(5)S-H], are known as the total (de)stabilization enthalpies, TSEs, where TSE = RSE - MSE, i.e., the radical (de)stabilization enthalpy minus the molecule (de)stabilization enthalpy. The effects of 4-Y substituents on the S-H BDEs in thiophenols and on the S-C BDEs in phenyl thioethers are expected to be almost identical. Some S-C TSEs were therefore derived from the rates of homolyses of a few 4-Y-substituted phenyl benzyl sulfides, 4-YC(6)H(4)S-CH(2)C(6)H(5), in the hydrogen donor solvent 9,10-dihydroanthracene. These TSEs were found to be -3.6 +/- 0.5 (Y = NH(2)), -1.8 +/- 0.5 (CH(3)O), 0 (H), and 0.7 +/- 0.5 (CN) kcal mol(-1). The MSEs of 4-YC(6)H(4)SCH(2)C(6)H(5) have also been derived from the results of combustion calorimetry, Calvet-drop calorimetry, and computational chemistry (B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)). The MSEs of these thioethers were -0.6 +/- 1.1 (NH(2)), -0.4 +/- 1.1 (CH(3)O), 0 (H), -0.3 +/- 1.3 (CN), and -0.8 +/- 1.5 (COCH(3)) kcal mol(-1). Although all the enthalpic data are rather small, it is concluded that the TSEs in 4-YC(6)H(4)SH are largely governed by the RSEs, a somewhat surprising conclusion in view of the experimental fact that the unpaired electron in C(6)H(5)S(*) is mainly localized on the S. The TSEs, RSEs, and MSEs have also been computed for a much larger series of 4-YC(6)H(4)SH and 4-YC(6)H(4)SCH(3) compounds by using a B3P86 methology and have further confirmed that the S-H/S-CH(3) TSEs are dominated by the RSEs. Good linear correlations were obtained for TSE = rho(+)sigma(p)(+)(Y), with rho(+) (kcal mol(-1)) = 3.5 (S-H) and 3.9 (S-CH(3)). It is also concluded that the SH substituent is a rather strong electron donor with a sigma(p)(+)(SH) of -0.60, and that the literature value of -0.03 is in error. In addition, the SH rotational barriers in 4-YC(6)H(4)SH have been computed and it has been found that for strong electron donating (ED) Ys, such as NH(2), the lowest energy conformer has the S-H bond oriented perpendicular to the aromatic ring plane. In this orientation the SH becomes an electron withdrawing (EW) group. Thus, although the OH group in phenols is always in-plane and ED irrespective of the nature of the 4-Y substituent, in thiophenols the SH switches from being an ED group with EW and weak ED 4-Ys, to being an EW group for strong ED 4-Ys.  相似文献

The interaction of two sets of structurally related molecules, thiophenol/thioanisole, and thiophene/tetrahydrothiophene, with vacuum-annealed and ion-bombarded TiO(2)(110) surfaces has been studied using a combination of temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All thioethers studied were observed to adsorb and desorb from both surfaces without producing reaction products, while thiophenol, the only species studied containing a S-H bond, reacted with both surfaces. Approximately 25% of surface bound thiophenol decomposed over the vacuum-annealed surface. On the bombarded surface, thiophenol both decomposed into surface-bound C(x)H(y)/S fragments, and reacted to form benzene, which desorbed from the surface at 400 K. We propose that phenylthiolate formation on the bombarded surface leads to the observed production of benzene. These results highlight the importance of defects in the reactivity of titania, and lay the foundation for the study of larger, refractory sulfur compounds present in fuel.  相似文献

The structure of self-assembled monolayers ofp-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acid and the mixed monolayers of this acid with n-hexadecanoic acid on silver surface were studied by reflection-IR spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurement, X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (X-PEEM), and atomic force microscopy. Exposure of the p-terphenyl-4-carboxylate monolayer to H2S vapor resulted in reorganization of the film structure into clusters of the corresponding free acids, in tens of nanometer dimension. Exposure of the mixed monolayer to H2S resulted in reorganization of the mixed monolayer film into phase-separated clusters of respective component molecules. The saturated aliphatic acid formed clusters of submicrometer size, whereas the p-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acid formed clusters of tens of nanometer size, presumably due to different surface mobility and/or intermolecular interaction of the two types of molecule. Restoration of the monolayer film from the clusters, driven by the reaction between the free acid molecules and the basic surface sites, proceeded at different speeds for the two types of molecules. The saturated acid monolayer was restored much faster than the p-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acid monolayer. A domain-separated monolayer in several micrometers scale was obtained. The process was imaged by tapping mode atomic force microscopy.  相似文献

H(D) Rydberg atom photofragment translational spectroscopy has been used to investigate the dynamics of H(D) atom loss C6H5SH(C6H5SD) following excitation at many wavelengths lambda phot in the range of 225-290 nm. The C6H5S cofragments are formed in both their ground (X(2)B1) and first excited ((2)B2) electronic states, in a distribution of vibrational levels that spreads and shifts to higher internal energies as lambda(phot) is reduced. Excitation at lambda(phot) > 275 nm populates levels of the first (1)pi pi* state, which decay by tunnelling to the dissociative (1)pi sigma* state potential energy surface (PES). S-H torsional motion is identified as a coupling mode facilitating population transfer at the conical intersection (CI) between the diabatic (1)pi pi* and (1)pi sigma* PESs. At shorter lambda(phot), the (1)pi sigma* state is deduced to be populated either directly or by efficient vibronic coupling from higher (1)pipi* states. Flux evolving on the (1)pi sigma* PES samples a second CI, at longer R(S-H), between the diabatic (1)pi sigma* and ground ((1)pi pi) PESs, where the electronic branching between ground and excited state C6H5S fragments is determined. The C6H5S(X(2)B1) and C6H5S((2)B2) products are deduced to be formed in levels with, respectively, a' and a' vibrational symmetry-behavior that reflects both Franck-Condon effects (both in the initial photoexcitation step and in the subsequent in-plane forces acting during dissociation) and the effects of the out-of-plane coupling mode(s), nu11 and nu16a, at the (1)pi sigma*/(1)pi pi CI. The vibrational state assignments enabled by the high-energy resolution of the present data allow new and improved estimations of the bond dissociation energies, D0(C6H5S-H) < or = 28,030 +/- 100 cm(-1) and D0(C6H5S-D) < or = 28,610 +/- 100 cm(-1), and of the energy separation between the X(2)B1 and (2)B2 states of the C6H5S radical, T(00) = 2800 +/- 40 cm(-1). Similarities, and differences, between the measured energy disposals accompanying UV photoinduced X-H (X = S, O) bond fission in thiophenol and phenol are discussed.  相似文献

Among all the transition metal sulfides, ruthenium sulfide (RuS2) has been shown to be the most active catalyst for the hydrodesulfuriztion processes. Using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we have found a novel approach for the preparation of RuS2 nanoislands on an Au(111) substrate. Chemical vapor deposition of Ru3(CO)12 leads to metallic Ru nanoclusters on the gold substrate. Although sulfidation has not been observed on extended Ru (0001) surface, Ru nanoclusters react with S2, forming ruthenium sulfide. While the majority of the sulfide is in the form of nanosized clusters that aggregate into clustered islands, a small fraction of the sulfide is seen as flat islands. When Ru3(CO)12 was deposited on a sulfur-modified gold substrate at elevated temperature, flat islands of ruthenium sulfide are formed exclusively. The flat islands are single-layer RuS2 nanocrystals with a (111) surface termination which exhibits an ordered array of sulfur vacancies. On such RuS2 (111) surfaces, excess sulfur is stable at low temperature and induces surface reconstruction, and desorbs at high temperature. The RuS2(111)/Au system provides an excellent model system for ruthenium sulfide catalysts.  相似文献

The formation of Ar and H2 clusters, having up to 900 particles in helium droplets, has been studied via laser induced fluorescence of attached Mg-phthalocyanine (Mg-Pc) molecules. In the experiments, one Mg-Pc molecule in average was added to each He droplet either before or after the cluster species, and the shift of the spectrum of the Mg-Pc molecules was studied as a function of the cluster size. For Ar clusters, about a factor of 2 smaller matrix shift was observed for the late pickup of the Mg-Pc molecules as compared with the prior pickup, indicating that in the former case, the Mg-Pc molecules reside on the surface of the preformed Ar clusters. On the other hand, the spectra of the Mg-Pc molecules attached to H2 clusters are independent of the pickup order, which is consistent with Mg-Pc molecules residing near the center of the H2 clusters in both cases. Therefore H2 clusters remain fluxional in helium droplets at T=0.38 K. No significant differences in the spectra were observed between the para-H2 and ortho-H2 clusters.  相似文献

It is widely believed that when a molecule with thiol (S-H) end groups bridges a pair of gold electrodes, the S atoms bond to the gold and the thiol H atoms detach from the molecule. However, little is known regarding the details of this process, its time scale, and whether molecules with and without thiol hydrogen atoms can coexist in molecular junctions. Here, we explore theoretically how inelastic tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) can shed light on these issues. We present calculations of the geometries, low bias conductances, and IETS of propanedithiol and propanedithiolate molecular junctions with gold electrodes. We show that IETS can distinguish between junctions with molecules having no, one, or two thiol hydrogen atoms. We find that in most cases, the single-molecule junctions in the IETS experiment of Hihath et al. [Nano Lett. 8, 1673 (2008)] had no thiol H atoms, but that a molecule with a single thiol H atom may have bridged their junction occasionally. We also consider the evolution of the IETS spectrum as a gold STM tip approaches the intact S-H group at the end of a molecule bound at its other end to a second electrode. We predict the frequency of a vibrational mode of the thiol H atom to increase by a factor ~2 as the gap between the tip and molecule narrows. Therefore, IETS should be able to track the approach of the tip towards the thiol group of the molecule and detect the detachment of the thiol H atom from the molecule when it occurs.  相似文献

The roles of hydrogen bonds in the solvation of an excess electron and a lithium atom in water hexamer cluster at 150 K have been studied by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the hydrogen bonded structures of (H(2)O)(6)(-) and Li(H(2)O)(6) clusters are very different from each other and they dynamically evolve from one conformer to other along their simulation trajectories. The populations of the single acceptor, double acceptor, and free type water molecules are found to be significantly high unlike that in pure water clusters. Free hydrogens of these type of water molecules primarily capture the unbound electron density in these clusters. It is found that the binding motifs of the free electron evolve with time and the vertical detachment energy of (H(2)O)(6)(-) and vertical ionization energy of Li(H(2)O)(6) also change with time. Assignments of the observed peaks in vibrational power spectra are done, and we found direct correlations between the time-averaged population of water molecules in different hydrogen bonding states and the spectral features. The dynamical aspects of these clusters have also been studied through calculations of time correlations of instantaneous stretch frequencies of OH modes which are obtained from the simulation trajectories through a time series analysis.  相似文献

The authors present theoretical results describing the adsorption of H2 and H2S molecules on small neutral and cationic gold clusters (Au(n)((0/+1)), n=1-8) using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation. Lowest energy structures of the gold clusters along with their isomers are considered in the optimization process for molecular adsorption. The adsorption energies of H2S molecule on the cationic clusters are generally greater than those on the corresponding neutral clusters. These are also greater than the H2 adsorption energies on the corresponding cationic and neutral clusters. The adsorption energies for cationic clusters decrease with increasing cluster size. This fact is reflected in the elongations of the Au-S and Au-H bonds indicating weak adsorption as the cluster grows. In most cases, the geometry of the lowest energy gold cluster remains planar even after the adsorption. In addition, the adsorbed molecule gets adjusted such that its center of mass lies on the plane of the gold cluster. Study of the orbital charge density of the gold adsorbed H2S molecule reveals that conduction is possible through molecular orbitals other than the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. The dissociation of the cationic Au(n)SH2+ cluster into Au(n)S+ and H2 is preferred over the dissociation into Au(m)SH2+ and Au(n-m), where n=2-8 and m=1-(n-1). H2S adsorbed clusters with odd number of gold atoms are more stable than neighboring even n clusters.  相似文献

Different cysteamine (H2N-CH2-CH2-SH) ionization forms have been studied by polarized Raman spectroscopy in solutions prepared with H2O and D2O and by DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31++G(d,p) level. To account for solvation effects, we employed the integral equation formalism polarizable continuum model (IEFPCM) option and explicit water molecules. Calculated relative energies and Raman spectra revealed that gauche rotamers around the C-C bond are the most stable conformers in solution. The experimental pKa values and Raman spectra of various ionization forms were best predicted by using a model with three explicit water molecules and the IEFPCM option. In general, the use of IEFPCM tends to lower the calculated frequencies for a few bands, but in some cases (S-H stretching mode) this effect is expressed very strongly. Potential energy distribution (PED) analysis of gauche conformers of various cysteamine ionization forms provided the possibility of discriminating spectroscopically methylene groups adjacent to sulfur, (CH2)S, and nitrogen, (CH2)N, sites. In general, stretching and scissoring modes as well as wagging and twisting vibrations of the (CH2)N group were found to be at higher frequencies. The influence of ionization of SH and NH2 groups on the vibrational spectrum is discussed, and Raman markers for further amine group ionization studies are suggested.  相似文献
