The solvent‐promoted aggregation behavior of some amphiphilic porphyrin derivatives bearing chiral functionality in the form of a charged L ‐proline group has been investigated by UV/Vis, resonance light scattering, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The investigated macrocycles give rise to aggregates featuring supramolecular chirality with high ellipticity. Kinetic studies reveal peculiar differences in the fashion of aggregation, depending on the intimate nature of the chiral functionality, namely, cationic (nitrogen‐quaternized L ‐proline, 3H2 ) or anionic (carboxylate residue, 6H2 ) group. Formation of anionic 6H2 aggregates shows a diffusion‐limited kinetic behavior. AFM topography studies show formation of tighter globular structures. On the other hand, the corresponding 3H2 aggregates are formed by a cooperative, fractal‐type decay, and appear as long‐fibrous, looser structures. In the templated aggregation of 3H2 over preformed 6H2 aggregates, AFM images show formation of globular structures with reduced sizes, as a likely consequence of shorter interchromophore distances, due to favorable Coulombic interactions. The results obtained show an interesting parallelism between the solution behavior and the solid‐state aggregate structures, corroborating the sergeant–soldier effect observed in the templated aggregation. The results presented give important insights for understanding the complex mechanisms involved in these issues, which are of key importance for the development of chiral supramolecular materials and stereoselective sensors and devices.  相似文献

New types of porphyrin derivatives bearing "C-glycoside" moieties, either in 5,10,15,20- or in 5,15-meso-positions, were prepared and fully characterized. The presence of the glycosidic groups imparts to the title macrocycles, besides an amphiphilic character, a clear tendency to form chiral suprastructures upon solvent-driven self-aggregation in different aqueous-organic solvent mixtures. Supra-assembly phenomena, in terms of the size and morphology of the resulting structures, as well as their kinetics of aggregation, were studied by UV-visible, fluorescence, resonance light scattering (RLS), and CD spectroscopy, indicating that the morphology of the aggregates depends strongly on the structure of the porphyrin rings, and on the bulk conditions of aggregation.  相似文献

The mode of aggregation of amphiphilised porphyrin derivatives bearing a chiral functionality is strongly affected by solvent composition; this results in the tuning of the supramolecular chirality of the porphyrin aggregates.  相似文献

We prepared novel cholesterol-appended squaraine dye 1 and model squaraine dye 2 and investigated their aggregation behavior in solution and thin films using photophysical, chiroptical, and microscopic techniques. Investigations on the dependence of aggregation on solvent composition (good/poor, CHCl3/CH3CN) demonstrated that squaraine dye 1 forms two novel H-type chiral supramolecular assemblies with opposite chirality at different good/poor solvent compositions. Model compound 2 formed J-type achiral assemblies under similar conditions. The supramolecular assembly of 1 observed at lower fractions of the poor solvent could be assigned to the thermodynamically stable form, while a kinetically controlled assembly is formed at higher fractions of the poor solvent. This assignment is evidenced by temperature- and concentration-dependent experiments. With increasing temperature, the chirality of the kinetically controlled aggregate was lost and, on cooling, the aggregate with the opposite chirality was formed. On further heating and cooling the aggregates thus formed resulted in no significant changes in chirality, that is they are thermodynamically stable. Similarly, at lower concentrations, the thermodynamically stable form exists, but at higher concentration aggregation was found to proceed with kinetic control. Based on these observations it can be assumed that formation of the kinetically controlled assembly might be largely dependent on the presence of the nonpolar cholesterol moiety as well as the amount of poor solvent present. However, under solvent-free conditions, structurally different aggregates were observed when drop cast from solutions containing monomer, whereas a left-handed CD signal corresponding to the thermodynamically controlled assemblies was observed from pre-aggregated solutions.  相似文献

The self‐assembly and induced supramolecular chirality of meso‐tetrakis(4‐sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TSPP) on both single‐wall (SWCNT) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are investigated. Under mild pH conditions (pH 3), TSPP forms aggregates when CNTs are dispersed in an aqueous solution containing positively charged polyelectrolytes such as poly‐L ‐lysine (PLL) or poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Evidence for the geometry of the porphyrin aggregates is obtained from absorption spectra, whereby the fingerprints of J‐ and H‐aggregates are clearly seen only in the presence of smaller‐diameter nanotubes. J‐aggregates are better stabilized with PLL, whereas in the presence of PAH mainly H‐aggregates prevail. Excited‐state interactions within these nanohybrids are studied by steady‐state and time‐resolved fluorescence. The porphyrin emission intensity in the nanohybrid solution is significantly quenched compared to that of TSPP alone, and this implies strong electronic interaction between CNTs and porphyrin molecules. Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) further supports that porphyrin arrays are associated with the MWCNT sidewalls wrapped in PLL. In the case of the SWCNT hybrid, spherical structures associated with longer fluorescence lifetime appeared after one week, indicative of H‐aggregates of TSPP. The latter are the result of π–π stacking of porphyrin units on neighboring nanotubes facilitated by the strong tendency of these nanotubes to interact with each other. These results highlight the importance of optimum dimensions and surface‐area architectures of CNTs in the control/stability of the porphyrin aggregates with promising properties for light harvesting.  相似文献

Hierarchical chiral structures made up of dendritic oligo(L- or D-glutamic acid) moieties of folic acid derivatives induce supramolecular chirality in the self-assembled columnar structures of the folic acids. These folic acids self-assemble through the intermolecular hydrogen bonds of the pterin rings to form disklike tetramers. In the neat states, the stacked tetramers form thermotropic hexagonal columnar phases over wide temperature ranges, including room temperature. Addition of alkali metal salts induces chirality in the columnar phases. In dilute solution states in a relatively polar solvent (chloroform), the folic acid derivatives form non-chiral, self-assembled structures. In the presence of sodium triflate, the folic acid forms chiral columnar assemblies through the oligo(L-glutamic acid) moiety, similar to those formed in the liquid-crystalline (LC) states. The enantiomer of the folic acid induces columnar assemblies with reversed helicity. In the case of the diastereomer, no induced helicity is observed. Application of an apolar solvent (dodecane) drives the folic acid derivatives to form chiral assemblies in the absence of ions. In this case, lipophilic interactions promote nanophase segregation, which enhances the formation of chiral columns. Interestingly, the chiral supramolecular structure of the diastereomer induces the most intense circular dichroism. In both cases, the molecular chirality in the oligo(glutamate) moieties yields supramolecular chirality of the folic acids that self-assemble through cooperative molecular interactions.  相似文献

A DNA‐based covalent versus a non‐covalent approach is demonstrated to control the optical, chirooptical and higher order structures of Nile red ( Nr ) aggregation. Dynamic light scattering and TEM studies revealed that in aqueous media Nr ‐modified 2′‐deoxyuridine aggregates through the co‐operative effect of various non‐covalent interactions including the hydrogen bonding ability of the nucleoside and sugar moieties and the π‐stacking tendency of the highly hydrophobic dye. This results in the formation of optically active nanovesicles. A left‐handed helically twisted H‐type packing of the dye is observed in the bilayer of the vesicle as evidenced from the optical and chirooptical studies. On the other hand, a left‐handed helically twisted J‐type packing in vesicles was obtained from a non‐polar solvent (toluene). Even though the primary stacking interaction of the dye aggregates transformed from H→J while going from aqueous to non‐polar media, the induced supramolecular chirality of the aggregates remained the same (left‐handed). Circular dichroism studies of DNA that contained several synthetically incorporated and covalently attached Nr ‐modified nucleosides revealed the formation of helically stacked H‐aggregates of Nr but—in comparison to the noncovalent aggregates—an inversed chirality (right‐handed). This self‐assembly propensity difference can, in principle, be applied to other hydrophobic dyes and chromophores and thus open a DNA‐based approach to modulate the primary stacking interactions and supramolecular chirality of dye aggregates.  相似文献

This paper reports a molecular modeling study of complex formation and aggregation behavior of a supramolecular system comprising three different moieties forming two distinct molecules. One molecule is a phenol derivative of porphyrin conjugated to a macrocyclic oligosaccharide, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and the other is 1-adamantanol (ADM). The inclusion complex of the latter molecule with the porphyrin–β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) conjugate, and the dimeric aggregates of the conjugate both in the presence and in the absence of the guest are investigated through molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods in vacuo, since the systems are scarcely soluble in polar solvents. In this way, we can find the most likely geometry of the complexes or aggregates and characterize the competitive inclusion behavior of ADM and of a porphyrin phenol within the β-CD cavity in terms of the various energy contributions stabilizing the resulting aggregates and/or inclusion complexes.  相似文献

We report a template‐free strategy based on steric repulsion for the isolation of discrete columnar aggregates of macrocycles. Specifically, introduction of sterically‐demanding trityl‐derived substituents at the periphery of Pt4 Schiff base macrocycles limits the otherwise infinite one‐dimensional columnar aggregation to discrete tetrameric and hexameric assemblies. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction studies of these compounds reveal discrete nanotubes of finite length that pack inefficiently resulting in three‐dimensional networks of interconnected void space. The discrete assemblies were studied by N2 adsorption and show enhanced surface area when stacked. In the absence of bulky substituents the macrocycles are nonporous. This strategy for engineering discrete supramolecular macrocyclic aggregates may be generalized to other columnar assembling systems.  相似文献

The incorporation of designed self-assembled supramolecular structures into devices requires deposition onto surfaces with retention of both structure and function. This remains a challenge and can present a significant barrier to developing devices using self-organizing materials. To examine the role of peripheral groups in the self-organization of self-assembled multiporphyrinic arrays on surfaces, Pd(II)-linked square and Pt(II)-linked trapezoidal tetrameric porphyrin arrays with peripheral tert-butylphenyl or dodecyloxyphenyl functionalities were investigated using various spectroscopies and atomic force microscopy. The Pd(II) assembled squares disassemble upon deposition on glass surfaces, while the Pt(II) assembled trapezoids are more robust and can be routinely cast on these surfaces. The orientation and length of the peripheral alkyl substituents influence the resultant structures on surfaces. The tert-butylphenyl-substituted porphyrin array forms discrete columnar stacks, which assemble in a vertical direction via pi-stacking interactions among the macrocycles. The tetrameric porphyrin array with dodecyloxyphenyl groups forms a continuous film via van der Waals interactions among the peripheral hydrocarbon chains. The super-molecules with liquid crystal-forming moieties also form three-dimensional crystalline structures at higher deposition concentrations. These observations clearly demonstrate that the number, position, and nature of the peripheral groups and the supramolecular structure and dynamics, as well as the energetics of interactions with the surface, are of key importance to the two-dimensional and three-dimensional self-organization of assemblies such as porphyrin arrays on surfaces.  相似文献

Amplification of chirality has been reported in polymeric systems. It has also been shown that related effects can occur in polymer‐like dynamic supramolecular aggregates, if a subtle balance between noncovalent interactions allows the coupling between a chiral information and a cooperative aggregation process. In this context, we report a strong majority‐rules effect in the formation of chiral dynamic nanotubes from chiral bisurea monomers. Furthermore, similar helical nanotubes (with the same circular dichroism signature) can be obtained from racemic monomers in a chiral solvent. Competition experiments reveal the relative strength of the helical bias induced by the chiral monomer or by the chiral solvent. The nanotube handedness is imposed by the monomer chirality, whatever the solvent chirality. However, the chirality of the solvent has a significant effect on the degree of chiral induction.  相似文献

New types of porphyrin-based framework solids were constructed by reacting meso-tetra(3-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin and meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)metalloporphyrins with common salts of lanthanide metal ions. The large size, high coordination numbers and strong affinity for oxo ligands of the latter, combined with favorable hydrothermal reaction conditions, allowed the formation of open three-dimensional single-framework architectures by coordination polymerization, in which the tetradentate porphyrin units are intercoordinated by multinuclear assemblies of the bridging metal ions. The latter serve as construction pillars of the supramolecular arrays, affording stable structures. Several modes of coordination polymerization were revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They differ by the spatial functionality of the porphyrin building blocks, the coordination patterns of the lanthanide-carboxylate assemblies, and the topology of the resulting frameworks. The seven new reported structures exhibit periodically spaced 0.4-0.6 nm wide channel voids that perforate the respective crystalline polymeric architectures and are accessible to solvent components. Materials based on the m-carboxyphenyl derivative reveal smaller channels than those based on the p-carboxyphenyl analogues. An additional complex of the former with a smaller third-row transition metal (Co) is characterized by coordination connectivity in two dimensions only. Thermal and powder-diffraction analyses confirm the stability of the lanthanide-TmCPP (TmCPP=tetra(m-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) frameworks.  相似文献

Alkyl- and Oligostyrene substituents were attached to shape-persistent macrocycles based on a phenyl-ethynyl backbone. In good solvents for both the rigid core and the flexible corona no aggregation occurred. Whereas, addition of a solvent that selectively solubilizes the corona induced a solvophobic aggregation. For alkyl substituted rings the experimental data were described by a monomer-dimer equilibrium. In contrast, the oligostyrene substituted rings formed more expanded aggregates which were investigated by scattering and by imaging methods. The superstructures are consequently described as hollow supramolecular cylindrical brushes.  相似文献

Supramolecular self-assembly stands for the spontaneous aggregation of small organic compounds or polymers into ordered structures at any scale. When being induced by inherent molecular chiral centers or ambient asymmetric factors, asymmetric spatial arrangement between building units shall occur, which is defined as supramolecular chirality. Except for molecular design, utilizing external stimulus factors to tune supramolecular chirality is a promising approach. In this Concept article, we particularly discuss the important role of solvents in manipulating the chirality of self-assembled systems. The impact of solvents on the chirality is generally based on three properties of solvents, i.e., chirality, polarity, and active coassembly with building blocks. Molecular self-assembly in chiral solvents could undergo the chirality transfer, exhibiting a chiral induction effect. Solvent polarity often determines intermolecular orientation. As a consequence, those building blocks with both polar and apolar segments might change their chirality depending on the solvent polarity. We elaborate the active participation of solvent molecules into ordered structures together with building blocks, where solvents and building blocks exhibit a coassembly manner. By specific treatments such as heating and cooling, solvents could be released or re-entrapped, allowing a smart control over supramolecular chirality. The solvent effect in manipulating two-dimensional chiral self-assemblies is then discussed. The perspective and future development in this research field are presented at last.  相似文献

The induced aggregation of achiral building blocks by a chiral species to form chiral aggregates with memorized chirality has been observed for a number of systems. However, chiral memory in isolated aggregates of achiral building blocks remains rare. One possible reason for this discrepancy could be that not much is understood in terms of designing these chiral aggregates. Herein, we report a strategy for creating such isolable chiral aggregates from achiral building blocks that retain chiral memory after the facile physical removal of the chiral templates. This strategy was used for the isolation of chiral homoaggregates of neutral achiral π-conjugated carboxylic acids in pure aqueous solution. Under what we have termed an "interaction-substitution" mechanism, we generated chiral homoaggregates of a variety of π-conjugated carboxylic acids by using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a mediator in acidic aqueous solutions. These aggregates were subsequently isolated from the CMC templates whilst retaining their memorized supramolecular chirality. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the aggregates formed in the acidic CMC solution exhibited bisignated exciton-coupled signals of various signs and intensities that were maintained in the isolated pure homoaggregates of the achiral π-conjugated carboxylic acids. The memory of the supramolecular chirality in the isolated aggregates was ascribed to the substitution of COOH/COOH hydrogen-bonding interaction between the carboxylic acid groups within the aggregates for the hydrogen-bonding interactions between the COOH groups of the building blocks and the chiral templates. We expect that this "interaction-substitution" procedure will open up a new route to isolable pure chiral aggregates from achiral species.  相似文献

The achiral syn folded (face-to-face conformation) host molecule of the ethane-bridged bis(zinc porphyrin) transforms into the corresponding chiral extended anti bis-ligated species in the presence of enantiopure amine guests. The mechanism of the supramolecular chirogenesis is based upon the screw formation in bis(zinc porphyrin), arising from steric interactions between the largest substituent at the ligand's asymmetric carbon and peripheral alkyl groups of the neighboring porphyrin ring pointing toward the covalent bridge. The screw direction is determined by the guest's (amines) absolute configuration resulting in a positive chirality induced by (S)-enantiomers due to formation of the right-handed screw, and a negative chirality produced by the left-handed screw of (R)-enantiomers. The screw magnitude is strongly dependent upon the structure of the chiral guests. The amines with bulkier substituents result in stronger CD signals and larger (1)H NMR resonance splittings of enantiotopic protons. This system possesses a high degree of chiroptical activity, which allows the differentiation of one of the smallest homologous elements of organic chemistry, that is, the methyl and ethyl groups attached to the asymmetric carbon, and additionally, which senses a remote chiral center at a position beta to the amine binding group.  相似文献

The self-assembly and supramolecular chirality of a dianionic tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS) in the presence of ionic liquids, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (alkyl = C(2), C(4) or C(6), abbreviated as C(2)mimBF(4), C(4)mimBF(4) and C(6)mimBF(4), respectively), have been investigated. It has been confirmed that mimBF(4) ionic liquids significantly promoted the J-aggregation of TPPS and the alkyl chain length in the imidazolium cation was closely related to the TPPS aggregation, the inducing ability of which decreased in the order of C(2), C(4) or C(6) in side chain. Interestingly, the formed TPPS assemblies with the ionic liquids showed supramolecular chirality although both TPPS and ionic liquids are achiral. It was found that the supramolecular chirality of the TPPS/IL system always appeared after the formation of the J aggregate. The dynamic process of the emergence of the handedness in the initial achiral system was monitored by the time-dependent CD spectra. A mechanism for the transformation of the conventional J-aggregate to the chiral J-aggregate was proposed. The work will lead to a deeper understanding of the chiral symmetry breaking in the supramolecular system.  相似文献

Carotenoids tend to form supramolecular aggregates via non-covalent interactions where the chirality of individual molecules is amplified to the macroscopic level. We show that this can also be achieved for non-chiral carotenoid monomers interacting with polysaccharides. The chirality induction in canthaxanthin (CAX), caused by heparin (HP) and hyaluronic acid (HA), was monitored by chiroptical spectroscopy. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and Raman optical activity (ROA) spectra indicated the presence of multiple carotenoid formations, such as H- and J-type aggregates. This is consistent with molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) simulations of the supramolecular structures and their spectroscopic response.  相似文献

In the presence of the sodium salt of a bulky anion, which allows the solubility of Na(+) in low polarity solvents, various tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin derivatives can spontaneously self-assemble from CH(2)Cl(2) into supramolecular nanostructures exhibiting a long-range order, through the coordination of Na(+) ions by the pyridyl moieties at the macrocycle periphery.  相似文献

This article describes recent achievements made by us and other groups in targeted synthesis of porphyrin-based framework solids by various non-covalent mechanisms of molecular recognition. The self-assembly processes are effected in a tunable manner either by direct association of suitably designed porphyrin building blocks, or by their supramolecular aggregation through external linkers as metal ions and organic bi-dentate ligands. Many of these crystalline porphyrin materials exhibit open architectures and remarkable structural integrity, and their potential application for selective guest storage and molecular sieving is highlighted.  相似文献
