In order to study the behavior of interior-point methods on very large-scale linear programming problems, we consider the application of such methods to continuous semi-infinite linear programming problems in both primal and dual form. By considering different discretizations of such problems we are led to a certain invariance property for (finite-dimensional) interior-point methods. We find that while many methods are invariant, several, including all those with the currently best complexity bound, are not. We then devise natural extensions of invariant methods to the semi-infinite case. Our motivation comes from our belief that for a method to work well on large-scale linear programming problems, it should be effective on fine discretizations of a semi-infinite problem and it should have a natural extension to the limiting semi-infinite case.Research supported in part by NSF, AFORS and ONR through NSF grant DMS-8920550.  相似文献

We describe a cutting plane algorithm for solving combinatorial optimization problems. The primal projective standard-form variant of Karmarkar's algorithm for linear programming is applied to the duals of a sequence of linear programming relaxations of the combinatorial optimization problem.Computational facilities provided by the Cornell Computational Optimization Project supported by NSF Grant DMS-8706133 and by the Cornell National Supercomputer Facility. We study the problem of finding a point in the relative interior of the optimal face of a linear program. We prove that in the worst case such a point can be obtained in O(n 3 L) arithmetic operations. This complexity is the same as the complexity for solving a linear program. We also show how to find such a point in practice. We report and discuss computational results obtained for the linear programming problems in the NETLIB test set.Research supported in part by NSF Grant CCR-8810107, CCR-9019469 and a grant from GTE Laboratories.Research supported in part by NSF Grant DDM-8922636 and NSF Coop. Necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality are given for convex programming problems with no constraint qualification. The optimality conditions are stated in terms of consistency or inconsistency of a family of systems of linear inequalities and cone relations. This research was supported by Project No. NR-047-021, ONR Contract No. N00014-67-A-0126-0009 with the Center for Cybernetics Studies, The University of Texas; by NSF Grant No. ENG-76-10260 at Northwestern University; and by the National Research Council of Canada.  相似文献

We develop a new dynamic programming method for the single item capacitated dynamic lot size model with non-negative demands and no backlogging. This approach builds the Optimal value function in piecewise linear segments. It works very well on the test problems, requiring less than 0.3 seconds to solve problems with 48 periods on a VAX 8600. Problems with the time horizon up to 768 periods are solved. Empirically, the computing effort increases only at a quadratic rate relative to the number of periods in the time horizon. This research was supported in part by NSF grants DDM-8814075 and DMC-8504786.  相似文献

On multilevel iterative methods for optimization problems   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper is concerned with multilevel iterative methods which combine a descent scheme with a hierarchy of auxiliary problems in lower dimensional subspaces. The construction of auxiliary problems as well as applications to elasto-plastic model and linear programming are described. The auxiliary problem for the dual of a perturbed linear program is interpreted as a dual of perturbed aggregated linear program. Coercivity of the objective function over the feasible set is sufficient for the boundedness of the iterates. Equivalents of this condition are presented in special cases.Supported by NSF under grant DMS-8704169, AFOSR under grant 86-0126, and ONR under Contract N00014-83-K-0104. We discuss methods for solving the unconstrained optimization problem on parallel computers, when the number of variables is sufficiently small that quasi-Newton methods can be used. We concentrate mainly, but not exclusively, on problems where function evaluation is expensive. First we discuss ways to parallelize both the function evaluation costs and the linear algebra calculations in the standard sequential secant method, the BFGS method. Then we discuss new methods that are appropriate when there are enough processors to evaluate the function, gradient, and part but not all of the Hessian at each iteration. We develop new algorithms that utilize this information and analyze their convergence properties. We present computational experiments showing that they are superior to parallelization either the BFGS methods or Newton's method under our assumptions on the number of processors and cost of function evaluation. Finally we discuss ways to effectively utilize the gradient values at unsuccessful trial points that are available in our parallel methods and also in some sequential software packages.Research supported by AFOSR grant AFOSR-85-0251, ARO contract DAAG 29-84-K-0140, NSF grants DCR-8403483 and CCR-8702403, and NSF cooperative agreement DCR-8420944.  相似文献

An algorithm is proposed for globally minimizing a concave function over a compact convex set. This algorithm combines typical branch-and-bound elements like partitioning, bounding and deletion with suitably introduced cuts in such a way that the computationally most expensive subroutines of previous methods are avoided. In each step, essentially only few linear programming problems have to be solved. Some preliminary computational results are reported.Parts of the present paper were accomplished while the author was on leave at the University of Florida.Parts of the present paper were completed while the author was on leave at the University of Trier as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation.  相似文献

Recently, Todd has analyzed in detail the primal-dual affine-scaling method for linear programming, which is close to what is implemented in practice, and proved that it may take at leastn 1/3 iterations to improve the initial duality gap by a constant factor. He also showed that this lower bound holds for some polynomial variants of primal-dual interior-point methods, which restrict all iterates to certain neighborhoods of the central path. In this paper, we further extend his result to long-step primal-dual variants that restrict the iterates to a wider neighborhood. This neigh-borhood seems the least restrictive one to guarantee polynomiality for primal-dual path-following methods, and the variants are also even closer to what is implemented in practice.Research supported in part by NSF, AFOSR and ONR through NSF Grant DMS-8920550.This author is supported in part by NSF Grant DDM-9207347. In this we paper we study techniques for generating valid convex constraints for mixed 0-1 conic programs. We show that many of the techniques developed for generating linear cuts for mixed 0-1 linear programs, such as the Gomory cuts, the lift-and-project cuts, and cuts from other hierarchies of tighter relaxations, extend in a straightforward manner to mixed 0-1 conic programs. We also show that simple extensions of these techniques lead to methods for generating convex quadratic cuts. Gomory cuts for mixed 0-1 conic programs have interesting implications for comparing the semidefinite programming and the linear programming relaxations of combinatorial optimization problems, e.g. we show that all the subtour elimination inequalities for the traveling salesman problem are rank-1 Gomory cuts with respect to a single semidefinite constraint. We also include results from our preliminary computational experiments with these cuts.Research partially supported by NSF grants CCR-00-09972, DMS-01-04282 and ONR grant N000140310514.  相似文献

Anstreicher has proposed a variant of Karmarkar's projective algorithm that handles standard-form linear programming problems nicely. We suggest modifications to his method that we suspect will lead to better search directions and a more useful algorithm. Much of the analysis depends on a two-constraint linear programming problem that is a relaxation of the scaled original problem.Research supported in part by NSF Grant ECS-8602534 and ONR Contract N00014-87-K-0212.  相似文献

One perceived deficiency of interior-point methods in comparison to active set methods is their inability to efficiently re-optimize by solving closely related problems after a warmstart. In this paper, we investigate the use of a primal–dual penalty approach to overcome this problem. We prove exactness and convergence and show encouraging numerical results on a set of linear and mixed integer programming problems. It has been shown [8] that numerous interior-point algorithms for linear programming (LP) generate solution sequences that converge to strict complementarity solutions, or interior solutions on the optimal face. In this note we further establish a theoretical base for Gay's test (Gay, 1989) to identify the optimal face, and develop a new termination procedure to obtain an exact solution on the optimal face. We also report some numerical results for solving a set of LP test problems, each of which has a highly degenerate and unbounded optimal face.Research supported in part by NSF Grant DDM-8922636, The Iowa Business School Summer Grant, and the Interdisciplinary Research Grant of the University of Iowa Center for Advanced Studies.  相似文献

Many multiextremal global optimization problems can be formulated as problems of minimizing a linear function over the intersection of a convex set with the complement of a convex set (so-called canonical d.c. programs or general reverse convex programming problems). In this paper it is shown that these general reverse convex programming problems can be solved by a sequence of linear programs and univariate convex minimization problems (line searches).Parts of the present paper were accomplished while this author was on leave at the University of Trier as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation.  相似文献

Stochastic dominance relations are well studied in statistics, decision theory and economics. Recently, there has been significant interest in introducing dominance relations into stochastic optimization problems as constraints. In the discrete case, stochastic optimization models involving second order stochastic dominance constraints can be solved by linear programming. However, problems involving first order stochastic dominance constraints are potentially hard due to the non-convexity of the associated feasible regions. In this paper we consider a mixed 0–1 linear programming formulation of a discrete first order constrained optimization model and present a relaxation based on second order constraints. We derive some valid inequalities and restrictions by employing the probabilistic structure of the problem. We also generate cuts that are valid inequalities for the disjunctive relaxations arising from the underlying combinatorial structure of the problem by applying the lift-and-project procedure. We describe three heuristic algorithms to construct feasible solutions, based on conditional second order constraints, variable fixing, and conditional value at risk. Finally, we present numerical results for several instances of a real world portfolio optimization problem. This research was supported by the NSF awards DMS-0603728 and DMI-0354678.  相似文献

We examine certain questions related to the choice of scaling, shifting and weighting strategies for interior-point methods for linear programming. One theme is the desire to make trajectories to be followed by algorithms into straight lines if possible to encourage fast convergence. While interior-point methods in general follow curves, this occurrence of straight lines seems appropriate to honor George Dantzig's contributions to linear programming, since his simplex method can be seen as following either a piecewise-linear path inn-space or a straight line inm-space (the simplex interpretation).Dedicated to Professor George B.  The authors of this paper recently introduced a transformation [4] that converts a class of semidefinite programs (SDPs) into nonlinear optimization problems free of matrix-valued constraints and variables. This transformation enables the application of nonlinear optimization techniques to the solution of certain SDPs that are too large for conventional interior-point methods to handle efficiently. Based on the transformation, we proposed a globally convergent, first-order (i.e., gradient-based) log-barrier algorithm for solving a class of linear SDPs. In this paper, we discuss an efficient implementation of the proposed algorithm and report computational results on semidefinite relaxations of three types of combinatorial optimization problems. Our results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is indeed capable of solving large-scale SDPs and is particularly effective for problems with a large number of constraints. Summary In this paper we discuss bounds for the convergence rates of several domain decomposition algorithms to solve symmetric, indefinite linear systems arising from mixed finite element discretizations of elliptic problems. The algorithms include Schwarz methods and iterative refinement methods on locally refined grids. The implementation of Schwarz and iterative refinement algorithms have been discussed in part I. A discussion on the stability of mixed discretizations on locally refined grids is included and quantiative estimates for the convergence rates of some iterative refinement algorithms are also derived.Department of Mathematics, University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY 82071-3036. We propose analyzing interior-point methods using notions of problem-instance size which are direct generalizations of the condition number of a matrix. The notions pertain to linear programming quite generally; the underlying vector spaces are not required to be finite-dimensional and, more importantly, the cones defining nonnegativity are not required to be polyhedral. Thus, for example, the notions are appropriate in the context of semi-definite programming. We prove various theorems to demonstrate how the notions can be used in analyzing interior-point methods. These theorems assume little more than that the interiors of the cones (defining nonnegativity) are the domains of self-concordant barrier functions.Research supported by NSF Grant #CCR-9103285 and IBM.
