We derive a simple model describing steady characteristics of Raman fiber lasers made with polarization maintaining fibers. We show both theoretically and experimentally that this kind of laser simply consists of two independent Raman lasers linearly polarized along the fiber birefringence axes. The output power characteristics of the laser are shown not to be influenced by optical Kerr effect. Finally, we use our model to propose answers to questions recently raised about efficiency of Raman lasers made with polarization maintaining fibers.  相似文献

Using Stokes-vectors formalism, we present a simple model describing steady and dynamic characteristics of all-fiber Raman lasers. This model allows us to describe experimental behaviors that are not yet understood in Raman lasers. In lasers made with standard fibers we show theoretically that weak birefringence and the optical Kerr effect lead to the emergence of unstable regimes similar to those recently observed in experiments [Opt. Lett. 28, 2464 (2003)]. However, the model shows that lasers made with polarization-maintaining fibers are always stable, as evidenced in experiments.  相似文献

Multiple pulses with broadband spectrum generation are experimentally obtained in passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring lasers based on nonlinear polarization rotation, which is achieved by incorporating a length of highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber in the laser cavity. The temporal and spectral dynamic behaviors of multipulse bunching states are demonstrated. The maximum spectral width and flatness are attained when the continuous-wave component is suppressed under appropriate polarization states and pump powers.  相似文献

Low-loss glass fiber waveguides are found to be excellent media for Raman lasers and amplifiers in the near-infrared region of the spectrum. Multiwavelength emission in the 1–1.3 μm range is readily obtained by efficient stimulated Raman scattering in single-mode silica fibers. With a 1.064 μm pulsed pump of 250 W in a 175-m, 6-μm diameter single-mode silica fiber we observed four orders of Stokes radiation at 1.12 μm, 1.18 μm, 1.23 μm and 1.3 μm, respectively. Our results imply that pulsed tunable stimulated Raman emission in this wavelength region is possible using kW tunable infrared dye lasers near 1 μm as pumps. These sources are useful for studying the dispersion of glass fibers as well as for other spectroscopic applications.  相似文献

提出了一种改进的、可用于计算偏振相关拉曼增益的光纤拉曼放大器的非线性耦合波方程。建立了单模双折射光纤拉曼增益的数学模型,分析了线偏振抽运光以与光纤快轴成45°激励的单模双折射光纤拉曼放大器模型与实际具有随机双折射的光纤拉曼放大器的拉曼增益偏振相关特性的等价性。基于上述模型,提出了一个可定量表征单模光纤偏振模色散统计特性的拉曼增益偏振相关因子,用以替代常规的光纤拉曼放大器非线性耦合波方程中的偏振相关因子。计算结果与已报道文献的实验数据非常吻合。同时对抽运增益在同向和反向抽运方式下截然不同的增益偏振相关特性给出了合理的解释。  相似文献

给出了拉曼增益系数分离光纤的定义,在考虑了N个单色光之间的两两受激拉曼散射,得到了这种光纤中单向传输的N个不同的单色光之间的受激拉曼散射(SRS)稳态耦合波方程的解析解。它适用于各单色光功率任意大小、光频率分布不均匀时的一般情况。这一结果可应用于光纤通信系统、拉曼光纤放大器和拉曼光纤激光器的设计与分析。最后把解析解与数值解进行了比较,两者取得了很好的一致。  相似文献

We demonstrate fiber distributed feedback (DFB) lasers using Raman gain in two germanosilicate fibers. Our DFB cavities were 124 mm uniform fiber Bragg gratings with a π phase shift offset from the grating center. Our pump was at 1480 nm and the DFB lasers operated on a single longitudinal mode near 1584 nm. In a commercial Raman gain fiber, the maximum output power, linewidth, and threshold were 150 mW, 7.5 MHz, and 39 W, respectively. In a commercial highly nonlinear fiber, these figures improved to 350 mW, 4 MHz, and 4.3 W, respectively. In both lasers, more than 75% of pump power was transmitted, allowing for the possibility of substantial amplification in subsequent Raman gain fiber.  相似文献

提出一种在保偏光纤上计算光纤拍长的方法,即在保偏光纤上制作光纤光栅,利用光纤光栅的特性可以方便地求得光纤的拍长,同时,发现在保偏光纤上写入光纤光栅,其过程等效于在两个主轴上分别写入了一个光纤光栅,并且这两个光栅对于光的偏振态具有选择性,它们分别作用的偏振态是相互正交的。利用此特性,可以得到偏振消光比比较高的偏振分束器。  相似文献

A switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a compact in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer comb filter at room temperature is presented. The comb filter is formed by splicing a section of twin-core fiber between two single mode fibers. By adjusting the states of the polarization controller appropriately, the laser can be made to operate in stable single-, dual- and three-wavelength lasing states. The operation principle is based on spectral hole burning induced by the saturated effect and polarization hole burning.  相似文献

We report here the efficiency improvement in a fiber Raman laser by splicing to it short pieces of 10000-ppm Yb3+-doped fibers. The amplified spontaneous emission produced by the doped fiber started the stimulated Raman scattering earlier than the spontaneous scattering in the 350-m silica-fiber cavity. In the best case, when splicing to the cavity 127 cm of doped fiber, the pump threshold decreased from 2.9 down to 1.27 W, representing a 56% improvement. This power was close to the theoretical minimum of 1.25 W for very long fibers. The second stokes signal (1175 nm) was only present when the doped fibers were inserted. At 4-W pump, the non-doped cavity delivered 2 W of first stokes signal (1117 nm) that represent a 50% efficiency compared to ~3 W delivered (~75%) when a 34-cm doped fiber was inserted. This improvement is intended to reduce the cost of fiber Raman lasers because less powerful sources or shorter fibers are necessary to produce more stokes components.  相似文献

The output characteristics of the conventional one-stage Raman fiber laser (RFL) are described in an optical wave turbulence formalism. Simple analytical expressions describing RFL output power and its spectral shape are presented, and square-root law for the output spectrum broadening law has been discovered. The indications of the turbulent-like spectral broadening in other types of cw fiber lasers and propagation phenomena in fibers are also discussed.  相似文献

We present analytical and experimental results to demonstrate the narrowing of pulses transmitted through optical fibers, with polarization mode dispersion compensated for to first order in frequency. The compensation technique splits the optical signal at the fiber output into polarization components that are aligned with the output principal states of polarization, and only one of the two components is subsequently detected. It is shown that it is possible with this compensation technique to have output pulses that are narrower than the input pulses. Pulse narrowing can also be found when the optical signal is split into orthogonal polarization components that are not principal states of polarization.  相似文献

We report on the operation of a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser made of purely normal dispersive fibers. Self-started mode locking can still be achieved in the laser by use of the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, and the mode-locked pulse has large pulse energy, strong frequency chirp, and a mode-locked spectral width limited by the effective laser gain bandwidth. Furthermore, we show that the operation of the laser can be well described by an extended Ginzburg-Landau equation model that governs the soliton dynamics of fiber lasers.  相似文献

We have demonstrated Raman small-core As-Se fiber. More than 20-dB of gain was observed in a 1.1-m length of fiber pumped by a nanosecond pulse of approximately 10.8-W peak power at 1.50 microm. The peak of the Raman gain occurred at a shift of approximately 240 cm(-1). The Raman gain coefficient is estimated to be approximately 2.3 x 10(-11) m/W, which is more than 300 times greater than that of silica. The large Raman gain coefficient coupled with the large IR transparency window of these fibers shows promise for development of As-Se Raman fiber lasers and amplifiers in the near-, mid-, and long-IR spectral regions.  相似文献

采用全矢量平面波方法,以聚合物为基材,研究了矩形点阵微结构聚合物光纤的传输模场和偏振性质.结果发现,矩形点阵微结构聚合物光纤基模两个正交偏振态不再简并,模场呈现类矩形且具有较强的线偏振特性;该光纤模式双折射产生于包层孔结构分布的不对称性,减小包层纵向孔间隔和横向孔间隔之比η值,双折射明显增强,适当调节η,可在更宽频带范围内实现高双折射单模运行.  相似文献

We study the properties of polarization evolution in sinusoidally spun fibers. It is found that, similar to linear birefringent fibers, the evolution of the state of polarization exhibits periodicity, which can be measured by distributed measurement, such as those made with a polarization optical time domain reflectometer. The spatial period is linked with the spin parameters and fiber beat length in a simple equation. In combination with a previous finding, it is shown that the spatial period is uniquely related to spun-fiber polarization mode dispersion. This suggests that distributed fiber polarization mode dispersion can be determined throughthe measurement of the spatial period obtained in a distributed measurement.  相似文献

Experiments are presented showing that under dual-frequency, orthogonal-polarization pumping, stimulated Raman scattering in optical birefringent fibers can be suppressed in one of the two fiber axes. For relatively small-frequency spacing and group-velocity mismatch between the pumps, Stokes light is suppressed along the polarization direction of the highest-frequency pump, owing to the orthogonal component of the Raman gain.  相似文献

Two novel multiwavelength Raman fiber lasers using a ring cavity and a linear cavity are proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Both laser configurations include a sampled chirped fiber Bragg grating used in the reflection mode. By adjusting the polarization controller (PC) in the cavities, up to ten stable lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing and equalized peak power are achieved at room temperature. It is observed that the output spectrum depends upon which port of the grating is connected to the cavity. These two fiber ring lasers offer advantages such as, stable room temperature operation, simple structure, low loss, multiwavelength lasing lines with moderate output power.
