We study the dynamics of bright solitons formed in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive atomic interactions perturbed by a weak bichromatic optical lattice potential. The lattice depth is a biperiodic function of time with a zero mean, which realizes a flashing ratchet for matter-wave solitons. We find that the average velocity of a soliton and the soliton current induced by the ratchet depend on the number of atoms in the soliton. As a consequence, soliton transport can be induced through scattering of different solitons. In the regime when matter-wave solitons are narrow compared to the lattice period the dynamics is well described by the effective Hamiltonian theory.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of bright matter-wave solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate with negative scattering length under the influence of a time-periodic ratchet potential. The potential is formed by a one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattice which flashes on and off so that the time average of its amplitude vanishes. Due to the broken space and time-reversal symmetries of the potential, the soliton is transported with a nonzero average velocity. By employing the non-dissipative mean-field model for the matter waves, we study the dependence of the transport velocity on the initial state of the soliton and show how the properties of the individual localized states affect the outcome of their collisions. A useful insight into the transport properties is provided by Hamiltonian theory for the mean field, which treats the extended matter-wave excitation as an effective classical particle.  相似文献

We propose a setup to observe soliton ratchet effects using discrete cavity solitons in a 1D array of coupled waveguide optical resonators. The net motion of solitons can be generated by an adiabatic shaking of the holding beam with zero average inclination angle. The resulting soliton velocity can be controlled by different parameters of the holding beam.  相似文献

We study collective dynamics in a chain of harmonically coupled particles subjected to degenerate but asymmetric on-site double-well potentials and driven by white and exponentially correlated noise. The difference of frequencies of small-amplitude oscillations in the vicinity of the wells appears to be a sufficient condition for the existence of the soliton ratchet effect. We find directed thermally activated soliton motion while at certain critical values of either the correlation time or noise strength, a reversal (switching) of the direction of motion takes place. Furthermore, we observe stochastic soliton transport directed against an applied d.c. field.  相似文献

We study the transport properties for a walker on a ratchet potential. The walker consists of two particles coupled by a bistable potential that allow the interchange of the order of the particles while moving through a one-dimensional asymmetric periodic ratchet potential. We consider the stochastic dynamics of the walker on a ratchet with an external periodic forcing, in the overdamped case. The coupling of the two particles corresponds to a single effective particle, describing the internal degree of freedom, in a bistable potential. This double-well potential is subjected to both a periodic forcing and noise and therefore is able to provide a realization of the phenomenon of stochastic resonance. The main result is that there is an optimal amount of noise where the amplitude of the periodic response of the system is maximum, a signal of stochastic resonance, and that precisely for this optimal noise, the average velocity of the walker is maximal, implying a strong link between stochastic resonance and the ratchet effect.  相似文献

We study the energy flow due to the motion of topological solitons in nonlinear extended systems in the presence of damping and driving. The total field momentum contribution to the energy flux, which reduces the soliton motion to that of a point particle, is insufficient. We identify an additional exchange energy flux channel mediated by the spatial and temporal inhomogeneity of the system state. In the well-known case of a dc external force the corresponding exchange current is shown to be small but nonzero. For the case of ac driving forces, which lead to a soliton ratchet, the exchange energy flux mediates the complete energy flow of the system. We also consider the case of combination of ac and dc external forces, as well as spatial discretization effects.  相似文献

We investigate the rectification of an ac bias in Luttinger liquids in the presence of an asymmetric potential (the ratchet effect). We show that a strong repulsive electron interaction enhances the ratchet current in comparison with Fermi-liquid systems, and the dc I-V curve is strongly asymmetric in the low-voltage regime even for a weak asymmetric potential. At higher voltages the ratchet current exhibits an oscillatory voltage dependence.  相似文献

We analyze a model for a walker moving on a ratchet potential. This model is motivated by the properties of transport of motor proteins, like kinesin and myosin. The walker consists of two feet that are represented as two particles coupled nonlinearly through a bistable potential. In contrast to linear coupling, the bistable potential admits a richer dynamics, where the ordering of the particles can alternate during the walking. The transitions between the two stable states on the bistable potential correspond to a walking with alternating particles. We distinguish between two main walking styles: alternating and no alternating, resembling the hand-over-hand and the inchworm walking in motor proteins, respectively. When the equilibrium distance between the two particles divided by the periodicity of the ratchet is an integer, we obtain a maximum for the current, indicating optimal transport.  相似文献

We study the deterministic dynamics of a periodically driven particle in the underdamped case in a spatially symmetric periodic potential. The system is subjected to a space-dependent friction coefficient, which is similarly periodic as the potential but with a phase difference. We observe that frictional inhomogeneity in a symmetric periodic potential mimics most of the qualitative features of deterministic dynamics in a homogeneous system with an asymmetric periodic potential. We point out the need of averaging over the initial phase of the external drive at small frictional inhomogeneity parameter values or analogously low potential asymmetry regimes in obtaining ratchet current. We also show that at low amplitudes of the drive, where ratchet current is not possible in the deterministic case, noise plays a significant role in realizing ratchet current.  相似文献

We consider soliton solutions of a two-dimensional nonlinear system with the self-focusing nonlinearity and a quasi 1D confining potential, taking harmonic potential as an example. We investigate a single soliton in detail and find criterion for possible collapse. This information is then used to investigate the dynamics of the two soliton collision. In this dynamics we identify three regimes according to the relation between nonlinear interaction and the excitation energy: elastic collision, excitation and collapse regime. We show that surprisingly accurate predictions can be obtained from variational analysis.  相似文献

We present a family of exact solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schro dinger equation which describes the dynamics of a bright soliton in Bose-Einstein condensates with the time-dependent interatomic interaction in an expulsive parabolic potential. Our results show that, under a safe range of parameters, the bright soliton can be compressed into very high local matter densities by increasing the absolute value of the atomic scattering length, which can provide an experimental tool for investigating the range of validity of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We also find that the number of atoms in the bright soliton keeps dynamic stability: a time-periodic atomic exchange is formed between the bright soliton and the background.

We study phase synchronization for a ratchet system. We consider the deterministic dynamics of a particle in a tilted ratchet potential with an external periodic forcing, in the overdamped case. The ratchet potential has to be tilted in order to obtain a rotator or self-sustained nonlinear oscillator in the absence of external periodic forcing. This oscillator has an intrinsic frequency that can be entrained with the frequency of the external driving. We introduced a linear phase through a set of discrete time events and the associated average frequency, and show that this frequency can be synchronized with the frequency of the external driving. In this way, we can properly characterize the phenomenon of synchronization through Arnold tongues, which represent regions of synchronization in parameter space, and discuss their implications for transport in ratchets.  相似文献

Current-driven dynamics of Josephson junction networks (JJNs) is studied using numerical simulations. We consider a JJN with an asymmetric and periodic potential of vortices, which is realized by saw-tooth modulation of junction critical currents. When external ac currents are applied to the JJN in a magnetic field, there appears a ratchet effect, and then directed motion of vortices is induced in certain system parameter regimes. A ratchet behavior is observed even for JJNs with weak structural disorder. We clarify the vortex pinning and dynamics in the JJN as a ratchet system.  相似文献

We investigate the evolution of Shannon entropy in quantum ratchet effect for a delta-kicked model, where a particle with initial momentum zero is periodically kicked by an asymmetric potential. It is shown that the evolution of Shannon entropy of the particle can remarkably reflect whether quantum resonance emerges and gives rise to ratchet current or not. Furthermore, for different kinds of quantum resonances, low-order or high-order quantum resonances, the evolutions of the entropy are quite different.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a model of the Brownian motor in a feedback controlled ratchet, in which the application of the flashing potential depends on the state of the particle to be controlled. We derive an analytical expression for the velocity induced by the feedback ratchet, which is a function of several parameters, including the ratio of the two switching temperatures and the asymmetry parameter of the potential field. The motor shows a current inversion when either parameter is varied.  相似文献

We study the regular and chaotic spatial distribution of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms with a space-dependent nonlinear interaction in a ratchet potential. There exists in the system a space-dependent atomic current that can be tuned via Feshbach resonance technique. In the presence of the space-dependent atomic current and a weak ratchet potential, the Smale-horseshoe chaos is studied and the Melnikov chaotic criterion is obtained. Numerical simulations show that the ratio between the intensities of optical potentials forming the ratchet potential, the wave vector of the laser producing the ratchet potential or the wave vector of the modulating laser can be chosen as the controlling parameters to result in or avoid chaotic spatial distributional states.  相似文献

A fluxon in a Josephson-junction parallel array behaves like a single particle in a periodic pinning potential. Different configurations of critical currents and cell areas result in different profiles for the fluxon potential. We analyze the minimal conditions to achieve an effective potential in which mirror symmetry is absent, namely a fluxon ratchet potential. Following one of the configurations, we designed circular arrays and probed some of the fluxon properties. Theoretical predictions are nicely fulfilled by the experiments. We present an experimental demonstration of a deterministic optical rocking ratchet. A periodic and asymmetric light pattern is created to interact with dielectric microparticles in water, giving rise to a ratchet potential. The sample is moved with respect to the pattern with an unbiased time-periodic rocking function, which tilts the potential in alternating opposite directions. We obtain a current of particles whose direction can be controlled in real time and show that particles of different sizes may experience opposite currents. Moreover, we observed current reversals as a function of the magnitude and period of the rocking force.  相似文献
