Catanionic surfactants formed by the pairing of two ionic amphiphilic chains of opposite charge are now recognized as an important class of amphiphiles. Many aspects of their phase behavior have yet to be explored. In this work, two homologous series of catanionic surfactants were synthesized, based on the cationic headgroups trimethylammonium and pyridinium. Within each series, the headgroup and chain length of the cationic counterpart remains constant while for the anionic counterpart the headgroup is varied, while its alkyl chain length is also kept constant. Thus, one can directly monitor the influence of headgroup chemistry on the thermal behavior of these compounds. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing light microscopy show that these compounds bear a rich and often complex thermotropic behavior, with the headgroup chemistry in some instances having a rather dramatic influence on phase behavior. Several liquid crystalline phases appear between the solid crystalline phase and the isotropic liquid phase. A qualitative correlation between the observed thermotropic behavior and the chemical nature of headgroup is presented.  相似文献

The lyotropic phase behavior for the neat cationic gemini surfactants alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(alkyldimethylammonium bromide), designated here as m-s-m, has been investigated previously in several works, but the thermotropic behavior has not been well characterized. Only for 15-s-15 and 14-s-12 have thermotropic liquid crystals (Lc) been reported. In this work, for the first time and in contrast to previous reports, we observe thermotropic Lc formation for m-2-m geminis with m = 12, 14, 16, and 18, by means of polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore, we investigate mixtures of m-2-m and SDS, m-2-m Br2.2SDS, which exhibit crystal-to-crystal phase transitions at lower temperature and, at high temperature, smectic Lc phases. The transition temperatures and enthalpies for Lc phases, obtained by DSC, present clear trends upon increase of the chain lengths. Combining Langmuir film experiments, possible lamellar arrangements for the different phases are tentatively discussed.  相似文献

The thermotropic sphere-to-rod transition of nonionic surfactants was characterized in terms of a large set of parameters: the transition temperature and width, the partial volume, coefficient of thermal volume expansion, enthalpy, isobaric heat capacity, and structural parameters, such as radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius. Data were recorded as a function of concentration of surfactants in H2O and in D2O. To this end, pressure perturbation calorimetry (PPC), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were applied in a study of aqueous solutions containing myristyl, tridecyl, and lauryl maltoside and heptaethyleneglycoltetradecyl ether (C14EO7). Small changes in the thermodynamic and volumetric parameters (e.g., the partial volume change is approximately +2 per thousand) are discussed in detail as the result of three effects governing the transition. (i) Reduction of the water accessible hydrophobic surface area (ASA(ap)) drives the transition. (ii) Shrinking in headgroup size by thermal dehydration triggers the transition. (iii) Hypothesized gradual ordering of the chains may control the effect of chain length on the transition.  相似文献

Alkaline-earth-metal dihexadecyl phosphate salts were synthesized, and their thermal stability was evaluated by thermogravimetry. Their thermotropic liquid crystal behaviour was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, dilatometry, and X-ray diffraction. On heating, the calcium, strontium, and barium salts exhibit columnar liquid crystal phases, whereas the less ionic beryllium and magnesium salts melt directly into isotropic liquids.  相似文献

A homologous series of guanidinium alkylbenzenesulfonates from ethyl to tetradecyl were synthesized and characterised. Their thermotropic polymorphism was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dilatometry. The structure of the smectic liquid crystal phases obtained at high temperature with the compounds from octyl to tetradecyl was analysed by X-ray diffraction. The supramolecular assembling of the ionic species inside the smectic layers was investigated by infrared spectroscopy.  相似文献

Small angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry methods were employed to characterise the internal order of structural phases present in polyurethane coatings obtained as a result of water evaporation from anionomer dispersions. Those anionomers were produced in the reaction of aromatic, cycloaliphatic and aliphatic diisocyanates with polyoxyethylene glycol, 2,2-bis-(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine. The decisive effects were found from ionic and polar structures within the rigid urethane and urea segments on the ordered arrangement degree of the supermolecular structures in the obtained anionomers. That becomes apparent in differential scanning calorimetry thermograms and contributes to improved thermal stability of the produced polyurethane coatings.  相似文献

The thermotropic behavior of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) multibilayers containing up to 10 mol% of lyso-palmitoylphosphatidylcholine (lyso-PPC) with and without low content of poly(ethylene glycol:2000)-grafted dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (PEG:2000-DPPE) has been studied by high sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and electron spin resonance (ESR) using the spin probe di-tert-butyl-nitroxide (DTBN). The three lipids, dispersed in buffer at appropriate concentrations, form thermosensitive liposomes used as site-specific drug-delivery systems. Without polymer–lipids, the DPPC main transition temperature is downshifted of 1.2–1.3 °C at the highest lyso-PPC content. The molar enthalpy and the cooperative unit of the DPPC main transition first decrease rapidly, then more slowly and finally slightly increase with lyso-PPC content. Moreover, in the mixed dispersions, the membrane fluidity increases at any temperature. The addition up to 5 mol% of PEG:2000-DPPE to DPPC/10 mol% lyso-PPC mixtures does not affect neither the thermotropic phase behavior nor the transition cooperativity and the fluidity of the dispersions.  相似文献

Cationic liposomes are studied mainly as nonviral nucleic acid delivery systems and to a lesser extent as carriers/adjuvants of vaccines and as low-molecular-weight drug carriers. It is well established that the performance and the biological activity of liposomes in general are strongly related to their physicochemical properties. We investigated the thermotropic behavior and the size distribution of mixed cationic liposomes formulated with different percentages of 1,2 dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine and one of four cationic amphiphiles characterized by a pyrrolidinium headgroup with the aim of achieving a better understanding of how the molecular structure of the cationic amphiphile and its mole percentage affect the physicochemical properties of the liposomes. Multilamellar vesicles and large unilamellar vesicles were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and turbidity, respectively, to characterize the thermotropic behavior and lipid phase, whereas dynamic light scattering was used to determine size distribution. This study shows that subtle modifications in the cationic amphiphile's molecular structure and in liposome composition may have dramatic effects on the organization of the liposome bilayer and hence on the morphological and physicochemical features of the liposomes, thus being highly relevant to the biological features investigated previously.  相似文献

The role of lipid domain size and protein-lipid interfaces in the thermotropic phase transition of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayers in Nanodiscs was studied using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and generalized polarization (GP) of the lipophilic probe Laurdan. Nanodiscs are water-soluble, monodisperse, self-assembled lipid bilayers encompassed by a helical membrane scaffold protein (MSP). MSPs of different lengths were used to define the diameter of the Nanodisc lipid bilayer from 76 to 108 A and the number of DPPC molecules from 164 to 335 per discoidal structure. In Nanodiscs of all sizes, the phase transitions were broader and shifted to higher temperatures relative to those observed in vesicle preparations. The size dependences of the transition enthalpies and structural parameters of Nanodiscs reveal the presence of a boundary lipid layer in contact with the scaffold protein encircling the perimeter of the disc. The thickness of this annular layer was estimated to be approximately 15 A, or two lipid molecules. SAXS was used to measure the lateral thermal expansion of Nanodiscs, and a steep decrease of bilayer thickness during the main lipid phase transition was observed. These results provide the basis for the quantitative understanding of cooperative phase transitions in membrane bilayers in confined geometries at the nanoscale.  相似文献

A series of cationic oligomeric surfactants (quaternary dodecyldimethylammonium ions with two, three, or four chains connected by an ethylene spacer at the headgroup level, abbreviated as dimer, trimer, and tetramer) were synthesized and characterized. The influence of the degree of oligomerization on their polymorphic and mesomorphic properties was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, polarizing optical microscopy, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. All compounds display layered arrangements with interdigitated dodecyl chains. The increase in the degree of oligomerization increases the interlayer distance and decreases the ordering in the solid phase; whereas the dimer sample is fully crystalline with well-developed 3D ordering and the trimer and tetramer crystallize as highly ordered crystal smectic phases. The number of thermal phase transitions and sequence of phases are markedly affected by the number of dodecyl chains. Anhydrous samples exhibit polymorphism and thermotropic mesomorphism of the smectic type, with the exception of the tetramer that displays only transitions at higher temperature associated with decomposition and melting. All hydrated compounds form lyotropic mesophases showing reversible phase transitions upon heating and cooling. The sequence of liquid-crystalline phases for the dimer, typical of concentrated ionic surfactant systems, comprises a hexagonal phase at lower temperatures and a smectic phase at higher temperatures. In contrast, the trimer and tetramer reveal textures of the hexagonal phase.  相似文献

A series of ionic liquid crystals with an alkoxy biphenyl unit tethered via an alkyl spacer to a guanidinium head group were synthesised and the mesomorphic properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD; WAXS and SAXS). Whereas all symmetrical guanidinium chlorides with the same chain lengths in alkyl tail and spacer displayed enantiotropic SmA2 phases, monotropic SmC2 phases with 1–2 K temperature range were only formed for chain lengths ≥ C10. Shifting the calamitic core more closely to the ionic head group by decreasing the tether length and simultaneously increasing the terminal alkyl chain improved the stability of both SmA and SmC phases considerably and led to enantiotropic SmC phases for the guanidinium chloride with C14 alkyl tail and C6 spacer. An even more pronounced effect was detected during anion exchange. Bromide, iodide, hexafluorophosphate, thiocyanate and triflate suppressed any SmC phase, whereas tetrafluoroborate behaved similar to chloride maintaining the SmC phase. However, acetate stabilised the SmC phase at the expense of the SmA phase. Based on temperature-dependant XRD measurements, a bilayer structure was proposed.  相似文献

Barbaloin is a bioactive glycosilated 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone present in several exudates from plants, such as Aloe vera, which are used for cosmetic or food purposes. It has been shown that barbaloin interacts with DMPG (dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol) model membranes, altering the bilayer structure (Alves, D. S.; Pérez-Fons, L.; Estepa, A.; Micol, V. Biochem. Pharm. 2004, 68, 549). Considering that ESR (electron spin resonance) of spin labels is one of the best techniques to monitor structural properties at the molecular level, the alterations caused by the anthraquinone barbaloin on phospholipid bilayers will be discussed here via the ESR signal of phospholipid spin probes intercalated into the membranes. In DMPG at high ionic strength (10 mM Hepes pH 7.4 + 100 mM NaCl), a system that presents a gel-fluid transition around 23 degrees C, 20 mol % barbaloin turns the gel phase more rigid, does not alter much the fluid phase packing, but makes the lipid thermal transition less sharp. However, in a low-salt DMPG dispersion (10 mM Hepes pH 7.4 + 2 mM NaCl), which presents a rather complex gel-fluid thermal transition (Lamy-Freund, M. T.; Riske, K. A. Chem. Phys. Lipids 2003, 122, 19), barbaloin strongly affects bilayer structural properties, both in the gel and fluid phases, extending the transition region to much higher temperature values. The position of barbaloin in DMPG bilayers will be discussed on the basis of ESR results, in parallel with data from sample viscosity, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), and SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering).  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to compare some physical properties of six new divinyl and diepoxy compounds. The compounds differ in the length of the rigid central segments. Optical observations and differential scanning calorimetry confirmed the existence of a mesophase in five compounds and enabled the determination of the phase transition temperatures. The wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements of samples aligned in a magnetic field and the optical observations allowed the identification of the mesophase types. In four compounds a nematic mesophase was detected during both heating and cooling. In one case two higher ordered phases were observed during cooling. The analysis of WAXS images and the positions and shapes of the scattering intensity peaks suggests a smectic B-crystal E transition. Using the data obtained in WAXS measurements carried out in the nematic phase, the lengths of the molecules and the average nearest neighbour distances were estimated. The average intermolecular distances and the layer spacings were also estimated for the SmB and E phases. The lengths of the molecules were also calculated by means of theoretical ab initio methods. The results obtained are in very good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

Cationic liposomes/DNA complexes can be used as nonviral vectors for direct delivery of DNA-based biopharmaceuticals to damaged cells and tissues. In order to obtain more effective and safer liposome-based gene transfection systems, the new cationic lipid 2-amino-3-hexadecyloxy-2-(hexadecyloxymethyl)propan-1-ol (AHHP) was synthesized. In this paper we report on the synthesis of AHHP and investigations of its physical-chemical properties. Langmuir monolayers of AHHP were studied at the air/buffer interface by film balance measurements, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). Structure and thermotropic phase behavior of AHHP in aqueous dispersion were examined by small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show clear differences in structure and phase behavior of AHHP, both in the monolayer system and in aqueous dispersions, in dependence on the subphase pH due to protonation or deprotonation of the primary amine in the lipid head group. Thermodynamic data derived from pi-A isotherms provide information about the critical temperature (Tc), which is in rough agreement with the temperature of the lipid phase transition from gel to fluid state (Tm) found by X-ray and calorimetry studies of AHHP aqueous dispersions. The packing properties of the molecules in mono- and bilayer systems are very similar. DNA couples to the monolayer of the new lipid at low as well as at high pH but in different amounts. The DNA coupling leads to an alignment of adsorbed DNA strands indicated by the appearance of a Bragg peak. The distance between aligned DNA strands does not change much with increasing monolayer pressure.  相似文献

New semirigid thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) copolyurethanes 4 and 5 made up of biphenyl units and partially fluorinated aliphatic chains in the backbones were synthesized by melt polycondensation of a mixture of a dioxydihexanol of biphenyl 1 and two fluorine-containing diols 2a , b taken in definite feed mole ratios with alkylene diphenyl dicarbamates 3a–i having various lengths of aliphatic chains. The assigned structures of copolyurethanes 4 and 5 were identified by FTIR, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra, and elemental analyses. The thermal and mesogenic properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal mechanical analyses (TMA), polarizing microscopy, and temperature-changeable X-ray analyses, whose measurements indicated that the copolymers 4 and 5 form thermotropic nematic phases and have glass transition steps around room temperature. It is suggested that the incorporation of partially fluorinated aliphatic chains into the backbones has no drastic effect on the LC formation in the semirigid copolyurethanes 4 and 5 .

A series of 1,4-piperazinium di- n -alkyl sulphates was synthesized and compared with an analogous series of 1,5-homopiperazinium di- n -alkyl sulphates. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. For the piperazinium salts, two ordered smectic phases were established, in which the lateral packing of the molecules within the layers is rectangular or tetragonal. Both phases are characterized by an alternate periodic packing of the positive and negative ionic groups in the polar sublayer, while the lipophilic sublayers of the alkyl chains are in a disordered conformation. Substitution of the piperazinium by the less symmetrical homopiperazinium group disfavours organization within the smectic layer and as a result smectic A phases were obtained.  相似文献

A series of extended, symmetric viologen triflimides were synthesised by the metathesis reaction of lithium triflimide with the respective viologen tosyalates in methanol. Their chemical structures were characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared, 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their thermotropic liquid-crystalline (LC) properties were examined by a number of experimental techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarising optical microscopy and variable temperature X-ray diffraction. The viologen salts containing alkyl chain of two carbon and three carbon atoms were relatively low melting salts. Those of alkyl chains of four carbon and five carbon atoms formed ionic liquids at 88 and 42°C, respectively. Those of alkyl chain of 9, 10 and 11 carbon atoms were high melting salts, as high as 166°C. Those of higher alkyl chains of 16, 18 and 20 carbon atoms showed thermotropic LC phases forming SmC, SmA and an unidentified smectic (SmX) phases, and showed SmA to isotropic transitions at high temperatures. As expected, all the viologen triflimides had excellent stabilities in the temperature range of 338–365°C.  相似文献
