The geometries, energetics, and vertical detachment energies of Na2-(NH3)n (n = 0-6) were examined by ab initio molecular orbital methods in connection with their photoelectron spectra. One of the Na atoms is selectively solvated in the most stable structures for each n. The solvated Na is spontaneously ionized and the formation of a solvated electron occurs with increasing n, giving rise to the Na-Na+(NH3)n(e-)-type state. The ground and two lowest-lying excited states derived from the 11Sigma g+, 13Sigma u+, and 13Pi u states of Na2, respectively, are of ion-pair character though the 13Sigma u+-type state has an intermediate nature slowly changing to the radical-pair state with increasing n. On the other hand, the higher states stemming from the 11Sigma u+, 13Sigma g+, and 11Pi u states of Na2 show a developing radical-pair nature as n increases. The size dependences of the photoelectron spectra such as the near parallel shifts of the first and second bands, as well as the rapid red shifts of the higher bands, are studied on the basis of the electronic change of the neutrals by solvation.  相似文献

By first principles calculations, we explore the possibility that Na(-)(H(2)O)(n) and Li(-)(H(2)O)(n) clusters, which have been measured previously by photoelectron experiments, could serve as gas-phase molecular models for the solvation of two electrons. Such models would capture the electron-electron interaction in a solution environment, which is missed in the well-known anionic water clusters (H(2)O)(n) (-). Our results show that by n = 10, the two loosely bound s electrons in Li(-)(H(2)O)(n) are indeed detached from lithium, and they could exist in either the singlet (spin-paring) or the triplet (spin-coupling) state. In contrast, the two electrons would prefer to stay on the sodium atom in Na(-)(H(2)O)(n) and on the surface of the cluster. The formation of a solvated electron pair and the variation in solvation structures make these two cluster series interesting subjects for further experimental investigation.  相似文献

We report vertical detachment energy (VDE) and IR spectra of Br2.-.(H2O)n clusters (n=1-8) based on first principles electronic structure calculations. Cluster structures and IR spectra are calculated at Becke's half-and-half hybrid exchange-correlation functional (BHHLYP) with a triple split valence basis function, 6-311++G(d,p). VDE for the hydrated clusters is calculated based on second order Moller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory with the same set of basis function. On full geometry optimization, it is observed that conformers having interwater hydrogen bonding among solvent water molecules are more stable than the structures having double or single hydrogen bonded structures between the anionic solute, Br2.-, and solvent water molecules. Moreover, a conformer having cyclic interwater hydrogen bonded network is predicted to be more stable for each size hydrated cluster. It is also noticed that up to four solvent H2O units can reside around the solute in a cyclic interwater hydrogen bonded network. The excess electron in these hydrated clusters is localized over the solute atoms. Weighted average VDE is calculated for each size (n) cluster based on statistical population of the conformers at 150 K. A linear relationship is obtained for VDE versus (n+3)(-1/3) and bulk VDE of Br2.- aqueous solution is calculated as 10.01 eV at MP2 level of theory. BHHLYP density functional is seen to make a systematic overestimation in VDE values by approximately 0.5 eV compared to MP2 data in all the hydrated clusters. It is observed that hydration increases VDE of bromine dimer anion system by approximately 6.4 eV. Calculated IR spectra show that the formation of Br2.--water clusters induces large shifts from the normal O-H stretching bands of isolated water keeping bending modes rather insensitive. Hydrated clusters, Br2.-.(H2O)n, show characteristic sharp features of O-H stretching bands of water in the small size clusters.  相似文献

We report the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and the resonant two-photon ionization spectra of the carbazole-(H2O)n (n = 1–3) hydrogen-bonded complexes. Use of carbazole as a symmetric “probe” molecule allows detailed insight into the symmetries, structures and intermolecular vibrations of these microhydrate complexes.  相似文献

An experimental and theoretical study of the photoionization energies (IE's) of Ba(H(2)O)(n) clusters containing up to n = 4 water molecules has been performed. The clusters were generated by a pick-up source combining laser vaporization with pulsed supersonic expansion, and then photoionized by radiation of 272.5-340 nm. The experimentally determined IE(e)'s for n = 1 to 4 are 4.56 ± 0.05, 4.26 ± 0.05, 3.90 ± 0.05 and 3.71 ± 0.05 eV. This cluster size dependence of IE is reproduced within ±0.06 eV employing the mPW1PW91 density-functional and CCSD(T, Full) quantum-chemical methods combined with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set for the H and O atoms and three different relativistic effective core potentials for Ba atoms. The calculations indicate that the lowest energy hydration structures represent the most relevant contributions to both the vertical and adiabatic ionization energies. Experimental and theoretical evidence correlates with the progressive surface-delocalization of the electron from the hydration cavity around the Ba atom and suggests that the intra-cluster electron transfer is possible even for small aggregates.  相似文献

IR-UV double resonance spectroscopy and ab initio calculations were employed to investigate the structures and vibrations of the aromatic amino acid, L-phenylalanine-(H(2)O)(n) clusters formed in a supersonic free jet. Our results indicate that up to three water molecules are preferentially bound to both the carbonyl oxygen and the carboxyl hydrogen of L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) in a bridged hydrogen-bonded conformation. As the number of water molecules is increased, the bridge becomes longer. Two isomers are found for L-Phe-(H(2)O)(1), and both of them form a cyclic hydrogen-bond between the carboxyl group and the water molecule. In L-Phe-(H(2)O)(2), only one isomer was identified, in which two water molecules form extended cyclic hydrogen bonds with the carboxyl group. In the calculated structure of L-Phe-(H(2)O)(3) the bridge of water molecules becomes larger and exhibits an extended hydrogen-bond to the pi-system. Finally, in isolated L-Phe, the D conformer was found to be the most stable conformer by the experiment and by the ab initio calculation.  相似文献

High-level quantum-chemical ab initio coupled-cluster and multiconfigurational perturbation methods have been used to compute the vertical and adiabatic ionization potentials of several water clusters: dimer, trimer, tetramer, pentamer, hexamer book, hexamer ring, hexamer cage, and hexamer prism. The present results establish reference values at a level not reported before for these systems, calibrating different computational strategies and helping to discard less reliable theoretical and experimental data. The systematic study with the increasing size of the water cluster allows obtaining some clues on the structure and reductive properties of liquid water.  相似文献

A femtosecond pump-probe technique was employed to study the photodissociation dynamics of (SO2)m(H2O)n clusters in real time for clusters, where m=1, 2 and n as large as 11. The pump (excitation) step occurs through a multiphoton process which populates the dissociative E state as well as a lower-lying bound state of the sulfur dioxide (SO2) chromophore. Dissociation of the SO2 monomer occurs through the E state and the decay is fit to a lifetime of 230 fs. The present study is in agreement with our previous investigations of homogeneous (SO2)m clusters that have shown that cluster formation inhibits the dissociation process owing to a steric effect induced by the cluster environment [K. L. Knappenberger, Jr. and A. W. Castleman, Jr., J. Chem. Phys. 121, 3540 (2004)]. The E state lifetime increases sequentially as a function of cluster size to as much as 668 fs when 11 water molecules solvate the chromophore. We have employed a method to compare the ratio of amplitude coefficients, which reflect a respective component of the mathematical fit, to determine the nature of the wave packet evolution in binary clusters. An increase of this ratio by as much as 440% was observed for large cluster sizes. A preferential ion state charge transfer, rather than dissociation, was observed in binary clusters. The significance of cluster size on evaporation processes has been investigated.  相似文献

The vibrational spectroscopy of (SO4(2-)).(H2O)n is studied by theoretical calculations for n=1-5, and the results are compared with experiments for n=3-5. The calculations use both ab initio MP2 and DFT/B3LYP potential energy surfaces. Both harmonic and anharmonic calculations are reported, the latter with the CC-VSCF method. The main findings are the following: (1) With one exception (H2O bending mode), the anharmonicity of the observed transitions, all in the experimental window of 540-1850 cm(-1), is negligible. The computed anharmonic coupling suggests that intramolecular vibrational redistribution does not play any role for the observed linewidths. (2) Comparison with experiment at the harmonic level of computed fundamental frequencies indicates that MP2 is significantly more accurate than DFT/B3LYP for these systems. (3) Strong anharmonic effects are, however, calculated for numerous transitions of these systems, which are outside the present observation window. These include fundamentals as well as combination modes. (4) Combination modes for the n=1 and n=2 clusters are computed. Several relatively strong combination transitions are predicted. These show strong anharmonic effects. (5) An interesting effect of the zero point energy (ZPE) on structure is found for (SO4(2-)).(H2O)(5): The global minimum of the potential energy corresponds to a C(s) structure, but with incorporation of ZPE the lowest energy structure is C2v, in accordance with experiment. (6) No stable structures were found for (OH-).(HSO4-).(H2O)n, for n相似文献

The stable structures, energies, and electronic properties of neutral, cationic, and anionic clusters of Al(n) (n = 2-10) are studied systematically at the B3LYP/6-311G(2d) level. We find that our optimized structures of Al5(+), Al9(+), Al9(-), Al10, Al10(+), and Al10(-) clusters are more stable than the corresponding ones proposed in previous literature reports. For the studied neutral aluminum clusters, our results show that the stability has an odd/even alternation phenomenon. We also find that the Al3, Al7, Al7(+), and Al7(-) structures are more stable than their neighbors according to their binding energies. For Al7(+) with a special stability, the nucleus-independent chemical shifts and resonance energies are calculated to evaluate its aromaticity. In addition, we present results on hardness, ionization potential, and electron detachment energy. On the basis of the stable structures of the neutral Al(n) (n = 2-10) clusters, the Al(n)O (n = 2-10) clusters are further investigated at the B3LYP/6-311G(2d), and the lowest-energy structures are searched. The structures show that oxygen tends to either be absorbed at the surface of the aluminum clusters or be inserted between Al atoms to form an Al(n-1)OAl motif, of which the Al(n-1) part retains the stable structure of pure aluminum clusters.  相似文献

We study the solvation of HC2- and O2- with acetylene ligands by means of midinfrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the CH stretching region, monitoring C2H2 evaporation upon infrared photon absorption by the parent cluster ions. Our findings are interpreted with the help of density functional theory. The infrared spectra indicate that while the binding generally occurs through ionic H bonds, there are two different classes of ligands which differ in their binding strength. This holds true for both core ions, even though their electronic structures and charge distributions are very different.  相似文献

The cross sections for electron scattering on OH-(H2O)n for n = 0-4 were measured from threshold to approximately 50 eV. All detachment cross sections were found to follow the classical prediction given earlier [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 892 (1995)] with a threshold energy for electron-impact detachment that increased upon sequential hydration, yielding values in the range from 4.5 eV +/- 0.2 eV for OH- to 12.10 eV +/- 0.5 eV for OH-(H2O)4. For n > or = 1, we found that approximately 80% of the total reaction events lead to electron detachment plus total dissociation of the clusters into the constituent molecules of OH and H2O. Finally, we observed resonances in the cross sections for OH-(H2O)3 and for OH-(H2O)4. The resonances were located at approximately 15 eV and were ascribed to the formation of dianions in excited states.  相似文献

Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy is reported for mass-selected Ni+ (H2O)n complexes in the O-H stretching region up to cluster sizes of n = 25. These clusters fragment by the loss of one or more intact water molecules, and their excitation spectra show distinct bands in the region of the symmetric and asymmetric stretches of water. The first evidence for hydrogen bonding, indicated by a broad band strongly red-shifted from the free OH region, appears at the cluster size of n = 4. At larger cluster sizes, additional red-shifted structure evolves over a broader wavelength range in the hydrogen-bonding region. In the free OH region, the symmetric stretch gradually diminishes in intensity, while the asymmetric stretch develops into a closely spaced doublet near 3700 cm(-1). The data indicate that essentially all of the water molecules are in a hydrogen-bonded network by the size of n = 10. However, there is no evidence for the formation of clathrate structures seen recently via IR spectroscopy of protonated water clusters.  相似文献

Various properties of typical structures of water clusters in the n = 2–34 size regime with the change of cluster size have been systematically explored. Full optimizations are carried out for the structures presented in this article at the Hartree–Fock (HF) level using the 6‐31G(d) basis set by taking into account the positions of all atoms within the cluster. The influence of the HF level on the results has been reflected by the comparison between the binding energies of (H2O)n (n = 2–6, 8, 11, 13, 20) calculated at the HF level and those obtained from high‐level ab initio calculations at the second‐order Møller–Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory and the coupled cluster method including singles and doubles with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) levels. HF is inaccurate when compared with MP2 and CCSD(T), but it is more practical and allows us to study larger systems. The computed properties characterizing water clusters (H2O)n (n = 2–34) include optimal structures, structural parameters, binding energies, hydrogen bonds, charge distributions, dipole moments, and so on. When the cluster size increases, trends of the above various properties have been presented to provide important reference for understanding and describing the nature of the hydrogen bond. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Here we report negative electron affinities of NO(2)(-).(H2O)n clusters (n=0-30) obtained from density functional theory calculations and a simple correction to Koopmans' theorem. The method relies on the calculation of the detachment energy of the monoanion and its highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies, and explicit calculations on the dianion itself are avoided. A good agreement with resonances in the cross section for neutral production in electron scattering experiments is found for n=0, 1, and 2. We find several isomeric structures of NO(2)(-).(H2O)2 of similar energy that elucidate the interplay between water-water and ion-water interactions. The topology is predicted to influence the electron affinity by 0.5 and 0.4 eV for NO(2)(-).(H2O) and NO(2)(-).(H2O)2, respectively. The electron affinity of larger clusters is shown to follow a (n+delta)-1/3 dependence, where delta=3 represents the number of water molecules that in volume, could replace NO(2) (-).  相似文献

We report studies of supersonically cooled water complexes of m-aminobenzoic acid MABA.(H(2)O)n (n = 1 and 2) using two-color resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) and UV-UV hole-burning spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations are also carried out to identify structural minima of water complexes in the ground state. For the most stable isomers of both complexes, water molecules bind to the pocket of the carboxyl group in a cyclic hydrogen bond network. Vibrational frequency calculations for the first electronically excited state (S(1)) of these isomers agree well with the experimental observation. The addition of water molecules has a major impact on the normal mode that involves local motion of the carboxyl group, while negligible effects are observed for other normal modes. On the basis of the hole-burning experiment, two major isomers for each complex are identified, corresponding to the two conformers of the bare compound. Compared with the other two isomers of aminobenzoic acid, the red shifts of the origin bands due to water complexation in MABA are considerably larger. Similar to p-aminobenzoic acid and different from o-aminobenzoic acid, the existence of the intermolecular stretching mode is ambiguous in the REMPI spectrum of MABA.(H(2)O)n.  相似文献

A near atmospheric pressure ion source with a β-emitter as electron source is used to inject ions into a supersonic water expansion. Cluster ions of the structure (H2O)+ n have been observed forn up to 8. Forn>3 these cluster ions cannot be obtained by ionization of water clusters in vacuum, but they can be grown in the cold environment of a supersonic beam. Extremely clean conditions are necessary for the observation of these cluster ions. The data can be explained by assuming that the local potential minimum calculated for the (H2O) n + ,n=2, potential hypersurface exists also forn>2. The model developed to explain these data is similar to that proposed for ionized rare gas clusters.  相似文献

The molecular structures of neutral Si n Li ( n = 2-8) species and their anions have been studied by means of the higher level of the Gaussian-3 (G3) techniques. The lowest energy structures of these clusters have been reported. The ground-state structures of neutral clusters are "attaching structures", in which the Li atom is bound to Si n clusters. The ground-state geometries of anions, however, are "substitutional structures", which is derived from Si n+1 by replacing a Si atom with a Li (-). The electron affinities of Si n Li and Si n have been presented. The theoretical electron affinities of Si n are in good agreement with the experiment data. The reliable electron affinities of Si n Li are predicted to be 1.87 eV for Si 2Li, 2.06 eV for Si 3Li, 2.01 eV for Si 4Li, 2.61 eV for Si 5Li, 2.36 eV for Si 6Li, 2.21 eV for Si 7Li, and 3.18 eV for Si 8Li. The dissociation energies of Li atom from the lowest energy structures of Si n Li and Si atom from Si n clusters have also been estimated respectively to examine relative stabilities.  相似文献

Accurate anharmonic experimental vibrational frequencies for water clusters consisting of 2-5 water molecules have been predicted on the basis of comparing different methods with MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculated and experimental anharmonic frequencies. The combination of using HF/6-31G* scaled frequencies for intramolecular modes and anharmonic frequencies for intermolecular modes gives excellent agreement with experiment for the water dimer and trimer and are as good as the expensive anharmonic MP2 calculations. The water trimer, the cyclic Ci and S4 tetramers, and the cyclic pentamer all have unique peaks in the infrared spectrum between 500 and 800 cm-1 and between 3400 and 3700 cm-1. Under the right experimental conditions these different clusters can be uniquely identified using high-resolution IR spectroscopy.  相似文献

The interaction of superoxide ion O2? with up to four water molecules [O2?: (H2O)n, n = 1, 2, 4] has been investigated using ab initio molecular orbital theory. The binding energy of O2?: H2O is calculated to be ?20.6 kcal/mol in good agreement with gas phase experimental data. At the MP3/6-31G* level the O2?:H2O complex has a C2v structure with a double (cyclic) hydrogen bond between O2? and H2O. A Cs structure with a single hydrogen bond is only 0.7 kcal/mol less stable. Interaction of H2O with the doubly occupied π* orbital of O2? is preferred slightly over interaction with the singly occupied π* orbital. Natural bond orbital analysis suggests that both electrostatic and charge transfer interactions are important in anionic complexes. The charge transfer occurs predominantly in the O2? → H2O direction and is important in determining the relative stabilities of the different structures and states. Singly and doubly hydrogen-bonded structures for the O2?: (H2O)2 and O2?: (H2O)4 clusters were found to be similar in stability and the increase in binding of the cluster becomes smaller as each additional water molecule is added to the cluster.  相似文献
