Two new kinds of fluorine‐containing polybenzimidazoles (PBI), poly(2,2′‐(tetrafluoro‐p‐phenylene)‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole) and poly(2,2′‐tetradecafluoroheptylene‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole), were synthesized by condensation polymerization of 3,3′‐diaminobenzidine and perfluoroterephthalic acid (or perfluoroazelaic acid), with polyphosphoric acid as solvent. Thermogravimetric analysis results show that the fluorine‐containing polymers synthesized exhibit promising thermal stability. The film‐forming properties of the fluorine‐containing polymers are improved over nonfluorinated PBI. The introduction of fluorine into the backbone of the polymers has significant positive affection on their chemical oxidation stability demonstrated by Fenton test. Compared with poly(2,2′‐(m‐phenylene)‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole)/phosphoric acid (PA) composite membrane, the resulting fluorinated membranes with a same PA doping level exhibit better flexibility and higher proton conductivity. The maximum proton conductivity gained is 3.05 × 10?2 S/cm at 150 °C with a PA doping level of 7. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2115–2122, 2010  相似文献

A high molecular weight, thermally and chemical stable hexafluoroisopropylidene containing polybenzimidazole (6F‐PBI) was synthesized from 3,3′‐diaminobenzidine (TAB) and 2,2‐bis(4‐carboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (6F‐diacid) using polyphosphoric acid (PPA) as both the polycondensation agent and the polymerization solvent. Investigation of polymerization conditions to achieve high molecular weight polymers was explored via stepwise temperature control, monomer concentration in PPA, and final polymerization temperature. The polymer characterization included inherent viscosity (I.V.) measurement and GPC as a determination of polymer molecular weight, thermal and chemical stability assessment via thermo gravimetric analysis and Fenton test, respectively. The resulting high molecular weight polymer showed excellent thermal and chemical stability. Phosphoric acid doped 6F‐PBI membranes were prepared using the PPA process. The physiochemical properties of phosphoric acid doped membranes were characterized by measuring the phosphoric acid doping level, mechanical properties, and proton conductivity. These membranes showed higher phosphoric acid doping levels and higher proton conductivities than the membranes prepared by the conventional membrane fabrication processes. These membranes had sufficient mechanical properties to be easily fabricated into membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) and the prepared MEAs were tested in single cell fuel cells under various conditions, with a focus on the high temperature performance and fuel impurity tolerance. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation and characterization of the nanocomposite polyelectrolyte membranes, based on Nafion, sulfonated multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT‐SO3H) and imidazole modified multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT‐Im), for direct methanol fuel cell applications is described. The results showed that the modification of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with proton‐conducting groups (sulfonic acid groups or imidazole groups) could enhance the proton conductivity of the nanocomposite membranes in comparison to Nafion 117. Regarding the interactions between the protonated imidazole groups, grafted on the surface of MWCNT, and the negatively charged sulfonic acid groups of Nafion, new electrostatic interactions can be formed in the interface of the Nafion and MWCNT‐Im, which result in both lower methanol permeability and higher proton conductivity. The physical characteristics of these manufactured nanocomposite membranes were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, water uptake, methanol permeability, and ion exchange capacity, as well as proton conductivity. The Nafion/MWCNT‐Im membranes showed the higher proton conductivity, lower methanol permeability, and, as a consequence, a higher selectivity parameter in comparison to the neat Nafion or Nafion membrane containing MWCNT‐SO3H or ─OH functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT‐OH) membranes. The obtained results indicated that the Nafion/MWCNT‐Im membranes could be used as efficient polyelectrolyte membranes for direct methanol fuel cell applications.  相似文献

A new sequence isomer of AB‐polybenzimidazole (AB‐PBI) was developed as a candidate for high‐temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. A diacid monomer, 2,2′‐bisbenzimidazole‐5,5′‐dicarboxylic acid, was synthesized and polymerized with 3,3′,4,4′‐tetraaminobiphenyl to prepare a polymer that was composed of repeating 2,5‐benzimidazole units. In contrast to previously prepared AB‐PBI, which contains only head‐to‐tail benzimidazole sequences, the new polymer also contains head‐to‐head and tail‐to‐tail benzimidazole sequences. The polymer was prepared in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and cast into membranes using the sol–gel PPA process. Membranes formed from the new AB‐PBI were found to be mechanically stronger, possessed higher acid doping levels, and showed improved fuel cell performance, when compared to the previously known AB‐PBI. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Based on Flory–Huggins parameters (χ), the miscibility and the effect of morphological change on proton conductivity and methanol permeability of partially sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) and partially sulfonated poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (SPPO), having an identical ion exchange capacity, were investigated. When 50 wt.‐% of SPPO was blended, both the proton conductivity and methanol permeability had the highest values, which resulted from the change of amorphous domains and the hydrogen bonding between the two ionomers.

The proton conductivities, water uptake and methanol permeability for the SPPO/SPS blend membranes studied here. The membranes with 50 wt.‐% SPPO clearly showed the greatest increase in these properties.  相似文献

Phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes have been covalently cross‐linked with dichloromethyl phosphinic acid (DCMP). FT‐IR measurements showed new bands originating from bonds between the hydrogen bearing nitrogen in the imidazole group of PBI and the CH2 group in DCMP. The produced cross‐linked membranes show increased mechanical strength, making it possible to achieve higher phosphoric acid doping levels and therefore higher proton conductivity. Oxidative stability is significantly improved and thermal stability is sufficient in a temperature range of up to 250°C, i.e. within the temperature range of operation of PBI‐based fuel cells. Phosphoric acid (PA)–doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) proton exchange membranes have received attention because of their good mechanical properties, moderate gas permeability, and superior proton conductivity under high temperature operation. Among PBI‐based film membranes, nanofibrous membranes withstand to higher strain because of strongly oriented polymer chains while exhibiting higher specific surface area with increased number of proton‐conducting sites. In this study, PBI electrospun nanofibers were produced and doped with PA to operate as high temperature proton exchange membrane, while changes in proton conductivity and morphologies were monitored. Proton conductive PBI nanofiber membranes by using the process parameters of 15 kV and 100 μL/h at 15 wt% PBI/dimethylacetamide polymer concentration were prepared by varying PA doping time as 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours. The morphological changes associated with PA doping addressed that acid doping significantly caused swelling and 2‐fold increase in mean fiber diameter. Tensile strength of the membranes is found to be increased by doping level, whereas the strain at break (15%) decreased because of the brittle nature of H‐bond network. 72 hour doped PBI membranes demonstrated highest proton conductivity whereas the decrease on conductivity for 96‐hour doped PBI membranes, which could be attributed to the morphological changes due to H‐bond network and acid leaking, was noted. Overall, the results suggested that of 72‐hour doped PBI membranes with proton conductivity of 123 mS/cm could be a potential candidate for proton exchange membrane fuel cell.  相似文献

Aligned polymer microstructures in the field of biomaterials, semiconductors, and ion‐conductive membranes expand steadily. Here, an alternative aligned polybenzimidazole (WM PBI) microstructures fabrication strategy based on the utilization of a weak magnetic field (0.3 T) via the solvent casting method is demonstrated. The anisotropic alignment is induced by the interaction of the π‐electron‐rich structure with the magnetic field. A ripple‐like structure was observed in the field‐emission scanning electron microscopy image for the WM PBI membrane, which depicted the successful alignment of the PBI structure toward magnetic field direction. Electrochemical studies revealed the bulk resistance of WM PBI with only 13.71 × 103 Ω compared to the unaligned PBI (WOM PBI) (63.01 × 103 Ω). WM PBI marked as the highest proton conductivity of 610.66 × 10?6 S cm?1, and it was proven that the external magnetic field does bring the impact toward the augmentation of the proton conductivity, which is useful in various future generation applications.  相似文献

The effect of casting solvent on the morphology of sulfonated polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene‐ran‐butylene)‐block‐polystyrene (SSEBS) was investigated using transmission electron microscopy and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Proton conductivities and methanol permeabilities were measured and the related impact on morphological changes is discussed. SSEBS is transformed from a well‐ordered lamellar to a disordered structure as the concentration of MeOH in MeOH/THF mixtures increases.  相似文献

This work presents a study of transport properties (proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and water uptake) and acid-base properties of commercial Nafion-112, -115, and -117 membranes modified with tetrapropylammonium (TPA) cations. In the interaction between TPA hydroxide and protons of sulfonate groups in the Nafion matrix, some of the protons are shown to be bound to sulfonate groups and do not participate in transport processes. These findings are confirmed by IR spectroscopy, acid-base titration, and data on proton conductivity of the modified membranes. Proton conductivity of the modified membranes is shown to be effectively described by a percolation model with parameters that agree with published data for commercial Nafion membranes. Based on these results, a model is proposed for the interaction of TPA cations with the sulfonate groups in Nafion membranes. According to this model, TPA cations form hydrophobic clusters in hydrophilic regions of the polymer matrix, thus preventing some of the protonated sulfonate groups from participating in transport processes.  相似文献

Partially sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PESS) was synthesized and methacrylated via reaction with glycidyl methacrylate (PESSGMA) and cross‐linked via radical polymerization with styrene and vinyl‐phosphonic acid (VPA). The chemical structures of the synthesized pre‐polymers were characterized via FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic methods and molecular weight was determined via GPC. Membranes of these polymers were prepared via solution casting method. The crosslinking of the PESS polymer reduced IEC, proton conductivity, swelling in water, and methanol permeability of the membranes while increasing the modulus and the glass transition temperature. However, the introduction of the VPA comonomer increased the proton conductivity while maintaining excellent resistance to methanol cross‐over, which was significantly higher as compared with both PESS and the commercial Nafion membranes. Membranes of PESSGMA copolymers incorporating VPA, exhibited proton conductivity values at 60 °C in the range of 16–32 mS cm−1 and methanol permeability values in the range of 6.52 × 10−9 – 1.92 × 10−8 cm2 s−1. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work investigates the effects of polymer solids content and macromolecular structure on the high temperature creep behavior of polybenzimidazole (PBI) gel membranes imbibed with phosphoric acid (PA) after preparation via a polyphosphoric acid (PPA) mediated sol‐gel process Low‐solids, highly acid‐doped PBI membranes demonstrate outstanding fuel cell performance under anhydrous, ambient pressure, and high temperature (120–200 °C) operating conditions. However, PBI membranes are susceptible to creep under compressive loads at elevated temperatures, so their long‐term mechanical durability is a major concern. Here, we report results for the creep behavior of PBI membranes subject to compression at 180 °C. For para‐ and meta‐PBI homopolymers, increasing polymer solids content results in lower creep compliance and higher extensional viscosity, which may be rationalized by increasing chain density in the sol‐gel network. Comparing various homo‐ and copolymers at similar solids loading, differences in creep behavior may be rationalized in terms of chain–chain and chain‐solvent interactions that control macromolecular solubility and stiffness in the PA solvent. The results demonstrate the feasibility of improving the mechanical properties of PA‐doped PBI membranes by control of polymer solids content and rational design of PBI macromolecular structure. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The major risk of using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to modify proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in fuel cells is possible short‐circuiting due to the excellent electrical conductivity of CNTs. In this article, silica‐coated CNTs (SiO2@CNTs) were successfully prepared by a simple sol–gel process and then used as a new additive in the preparation of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)‐based composite membranes. The insulated and hydrophilic silica coated on the surface of CNTs not only eliminated the risk of short‐circuiting, but also enhanced the interfacial interaction between CNTs and SPEEK, and hence promoted the homogeneous dispersion of CNTs in the SPEEK matrix. Moreover, compared to the methanol permeability of the pure SPEEK membrane (3.42 × 10?7 cm2 s?1), the SPEEK/SiO2@CNT composite membrane with a SiO2@CNT loading of 5 wt% exhibits almost one order of magnitude decrease of methanol crossover, while the proton conductivity still remained above 10?2 S cm?1 at room temperature. The obtained results expose the possibility of SPEEK/SiO2@CNT membranes to be served as high‐performance PEMs in direct methanol fuel cells. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Hybrid organic/inorganic composite polymer electrolyte membranes based on a poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) grafted membrane and varying concentrations of zeolite were investigated for application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). A proton conducting comb copolymer consisting of poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) backbone and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) side chains, i.e. P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA (graft copolymer) with 47 wt% of PSSA was synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and solution blended with zeolite. Upon incorporation of zeolite, the symmetric stretching band of both SO group (1169 cm?1) and the ? OH group (3426 cm?1) shifted to lower wavenumbers. The shift in these FT‐IR spectra suggests that the zeolite particles strongly interact with the sulfonic acid groups of PSSA chains. When the weight percent of zeolite 5A is above 7%, the proton conductivity at room temperature was reduced to 0.011 S/cm. The water uptake of the composite membranes decreased from 234 to 125% with an increase of the zeolite 5A weight percent to 10 wt%. The decrease in water uptake is likely a result of the decrease in the number of available water absorption sites because of the hydrogen bonding interactions between the zeolite particles and the graft copolymer matrix. This behavior is successfully investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) also showed that all the membranes were stable up to 300°C. A series of perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB) aryl ether‐based amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and fluorophilic poly(p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate) segments were synthesized via successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 2‐MBP‐initiated and CuBr/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine‐catalyzed ATRP homopolymerization of the PFCB‐containing methacrylate monomer, p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate, can be performed in a controlled mode as confirmed by the fact that the number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increased linearly with the conversions of the monomer while the polydispersity indices kept below 1.38. The block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.36) were synthesized by ATRP using Br‐end‐functionalized poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) as macroinitiator followed by the acidolysis of hydrophobic PtBA block into hydrophilic PAA segment. The critical micelle concentrations of the amphiphilic diblock copolymers in different surroundings were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe. The morphology and size of the micelles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic laser light scattering, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer blending is used to modify or improve the dimensional and thermal stability of any two different polymers or copolymers. In this study, both sulfonated polybenzimidazole homopolymer (MS-p-PBI 100) and sulfonated poly(aryl ether benzimidazole) copolymers (MS-p-PBI 50, 60, 70, 80, 90) were successfully synthesized from commercially available monomers. The chemical structure and thermal stability of these polymers was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR and TGA techniques. Blend membranes (BMs) were prepared from the salt forms of sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (PES 70) and MS-p-PBI 100 using dimethylacetamide (DMAc). These blend membranes exhibited good stability in boiling water. The blending of 1 wt.% of MS-p-PBI 100 and 99 wt.% of PES 70 to produce the blend membrane BM 1 reduced membrane swelling, thus leading to good dimensional stability and comparable proton conductivity. Hence, BM 1 was chosen for the fabrication of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications. This paper reports on PEMFC and DMFC performance under specific conditions.  相似文献

New sulfonated poly(imidoaryl ether sulfone) copolymers derived from sulfonated 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, and imidoaryl biphenol were evaluated as polymer electrolyte membranes for direct methanol fuel cells. The sulfonated membranes were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The state of water in the membranes was measured with differential scanning calorimetry, and the existence of free water and bound water was discussed in terms of the sulfonation level. The 10 wt % weight loss temperatures of these copolymers were above 470 °C, indicating excellent thermooxidative stability to meet the severe criteria of harsh fuel‐cell conditions. The proton conductivities of the membranes ranged from 3.8 × 10?2 to 5 × 10?2 S/cm at 90 °C, depending on the degree of sulfonation. The sulfonated membranes maintained the original proton conductivity even after a boiling water test, and this indicated the excellent hydrolytic stability of the membranes. The methanol permeabilities ranged from 1.65 × 10?8 to 5.14 × 10?8 cm2/s and were lower than those of other conventional sulfonated ionomer membranes, particularly commercial perfluorinated sulfonated ionomer (Nafion). The properties of proton and methanol transport were discussed with respect to the state of water in the membranes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) polymers tethered with N‐phenyl 1,2,4‐triazole (NPT) groups were prepared from a newly synthesized aromatic diacid, 3′‐(4‐phenyl‐4H‐1,2,4‐triazole‐3,5‐diyl) dibenzoic acid (PTDBA). The obtained polymers show superior thermal and chemical stability and good solubility in many aprotic solvents. The inherent viscosities of all polymers were around 1 dL/g. They exhibit high thermal stability with initial decomposition temperature ranging from 515 to 530 °C, high glass transition temperature ranging from 375 to 410 °C, and good mechanical properties with tensile stress in the range of 66–98 MPa and modulus 1897–2600 MPa. XRD analysis indicates that these polymers are amorphous in nature. Physicochemical properties such as water and phosphoric acid‐uptake, oxidative stability, and proton conductivity of membranes of these polymers have also been determined. The proton conductivity ranged from 4.7 × 10?3 to 1.8 × 10?2 S cm?1 at 175 °C in dry conditions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 2289–2303, 2009  相似文献

Novel sulfonated diamines bearing aromatic pendant groups, namely, 3,5‐diamino‐3′‐sulfo‐4′‐(4‐sulfophenoxy) benzophenone (DASSPB) and 3,5‐diamino‐3′‐sulfo‐4′‐(2,4‐disulfophenoxy) benzophenone (DASDSPB), were successfully synthesized. Novel side‐chain‐type sulfonated (co)polyimides (SPIs) were synthesized from these two diamines, 1,4,5,8‐naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA) and nonsulfonated diamines such as 4,4′‐bis(3‐aminophenoxy) phenyl sulfone (BAPPS). Tough and transparent membranes of SPIs with ion exchange capacity of 1.5–2.9 meq g?1 were prepared. They showed good solubility and high thermal stability up to 300 °C. They showed isotropic membrane swelling in water, which was different from the main‐chain‐type and sulfoalkoxy‐based side‐chain‐type SPIs. The relative humidity (RH) and temperature dependence of proton conductivity were examined. At low RH, the novel SPI membranes showed much higher conductivity than the sulfoalkoxy‐based SPIs. They showed comparable or even higher proton conductivity than Nafion 112 in water at 60 °C (>0.10 S cm?1). The membrane of NTDA‐DASDSPB/BAPPS (1/1)‐s displayed reasonably high proton conductivities of 0.05 and 0.30 S cm?1 at 50 and 100% RH, respectively, at 120 °C. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of branched/crosslinked sulfonated polyimide (B/C‐SPI) membranes were prepared and evaluated as proton‐conducting ionomers based on the new concept of in situ crosslinking from sulfonated polyimide (SPI) oligomers and triamine monomers. Chemical branching and crosslinking in SPI oligomers with 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene as a crosslinker gave the polymer membranes very good water stability and mechanical properties under an accelerated aging treatment in water at 130 °C, despite their high ion‐exchange capacity (2.2–2.6 mequiv g?1). The resulting polymer electrolytes displayed high proton conductivities of 0.2–0.3 S cm?1 at 120 °C in water and reasonably high conductivities of 0.02–0.03 S cm?1 at 50% relative humidity. In a single H2/O2 fuel‐cell system at 90 °C, they exhibited high fuel‐cell performances comparable to those of Nafion 112. The B/C‐SPI membranes also displayed good performances in a direct methanol fuel cell with methanol concentrations as high as 50 wt % that were superior to those of Nafion 112. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
