New hyperbranched poly(trimellitic anhydride‐triethylene glycol) ester epoxy (HTTE) is synthesized and used to toughen diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) resin system. The effects of content and generation number of HTTE on the performance of the cured systems are studied in detail. The impact strength is improved 2–7 times for HTTE/DGEBA blends compared with that of the unmodified system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of fracture surface shows cavitations at center and fibrous yielding phenomenon at edge which indicated that the particle cavitations, shear yield deformation, and in situ toughness mechanism are the main toughening mechanisms. The dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMA) analyses suggest that phase separation occurred as interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) for the HTTE/DGEBA amine systems. The IPN maintains transparency and shows higher modulus than the neat epoxy. The glass transition temperature (Tg) decreases to some extent compared with the neat epoxy. The Tg increases with increase in the generation number from first to third of HTTE and the concentrations of hard segment. The HTTE leads to a small decrease in thermal stability with the increasing content from TGA analysis. The thermal stability increases with increase in the generation number from first to third. Moreover, HTTE promotes char formation in the HTTE/DGEBA blends. The increase in thermal properties from first to third generation number is attributed to the increase in the molar mass and intramolecular hydrogen bridges, the increasing interaction of the HTTE/DGEBA IPNs, and the increasing crosslinking density due to the availability of a greater number of end hydroxyl and end epoxide functions. Epoxy resins modified by an organosoluble phosphorus‐containing bismaleimide (3,3′‐bis(maleimidophenyl) phenylphosphine oxide; BMPPPO) were prepared by simultaneously curing epoxy/diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM), and BMPPPO. The resulted epoxy resins were found to exhibit glass transition temperatures as high as 212 °C, thermal stability at temperatures over 350 °C, and excellent flame retardancy with Limited oxygen index (LOI) values around 40. Incorporation of BMPPPO into epoxy resins via the thermosetting blend was demonstrated to be an effective way to enhance the thermal properties and flame retardancy simultaneously. The acetyl esterified calixarene (CA) derivatives were prepared from calix[4]resorcinarene (CRA), and ptert‐butylcalixarene (BCA[n], n = 4, 6, 8), respectively. Using these CA derivatives as curing agents, the thermal curing reactions of two multifunctional epoxy resins (jER 828, 186 g/equiv., and ESCN, 193.7 g/equiv.) were investigated. The temperatures of glass transition (Tg) and decomposition (T) were measured by DSC and TGA, respectively. Based on the yields, Tgs, and Tds of the thermal cured jER 828 epoxy resin with CRA‐E100, the curing conditions were optimized to be tetrabutylphosphonium bromide (TBPB) as catalyst in NMP at 160 °C for 15 h. Under this curing condition, the cured materials of jER 828 or ESCN using various CA derivatives as curing agents were prepared. Except for BCA4 derivatives, the yields of thermal curing reaction were higher than 90%. Tgs and Ts of the resultant cured materials were in the range of 113–248 °C and 363–404 °C, respectively. These results mean that the cured epoxy resins with excellent Tgs were successfully formed by using CA derivatives as curing agents. It was also found that the Tgs of cured epoxy resins were strongly affected by the degree of esterification of CA derivatives. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A thermoplastic, poly(ethersulfone) (PES) was used to modify a bisphenol‐F based epoxy resin cured with an aromatic diamine. The initial mixtures before curing, prepared by melt mixing, were homogeneous. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of solvent‐etched fracture surfaces of the cured blends indicated that phase separation occurred after curing. The cryogenic mechanical behaviors of the epoxy resins were studied in terms of tensile properties and Charpy impact strength at cryogenic temperature (77 K) and compared to their corresponding behaviors at room temperature (RT). The addition of PES generally improved the tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength at both RT and 77 K except the RT tensile strength at 25 phr PES content. It was interesting to observe that and the maximum values of the tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength occurred at 20 phr PES content where a co‐continuous phase formed. Young's modulus decreased slightly with the increase of the PES content. Moreover, the tensile strength and Young's modulus at 77 K were higher than those at RT at the same composition, whereas the elongation at break and impact strength showed the opposite results. Finally, the differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) was enhanced by the addition of PES. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the latent thermal cationic initiators triphenyl benzyl phosphonium hexafluoroantimonate (TBPH) and benzyl‐2‐methylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BMPH) were newly synthesized and characterized with IR, 1H NMR, and P NMR spectroscopy. The thermal and mechanical properties of difunctional epoxy [diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)] resins cured by 1 phr of either TBPH or BMPH were investigated. The DGEBA/TBPH system showed a higher curing temperature and a higher critical stress intensity factor than the epoxy/BMPH system. This could be interpreted in terms of the slow thermal diffusion rate and bulk structure of the four phenyl groups in TBPH. However, the decomposition activation energy derived from the Coats–Redfern method was lower for epoxy/TBPH. This result was probably due to the fact that a broken short‐chain structure was developed by the steric hindrance of TBPH in the difunctional epoxy resin. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of the hyperbranched polyester with hydroxyl end groups (HBPE‐OH) on the curing behavior and toughening performance of a commercial epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, DGEBA) were presented. The addition of HBPE‐OH into DGEBA strongly increased its curing rate and conversion of epoxide group due to the catalytic effect of hydroxyl groups in HBPE‐OH and the low viscosity of the blend at curing temperature. The improvements on impact strength and critical stress intensity factor (or fracture toughness, K1c) were observed with adding HBPE‐OH. The impact strength was 8.04 kJ m?1 when HBPE‐OH reached 15 wt% and the K1c value was approximately two times the value of pure epoxy resin when HBPE‐OH content was 20 wt%. The morphology of the blends was also investigated, which indicated that HBPE‐OH particles, as a second phase in the epoxy matrix, combined with each other as the concentration of HBPE‐OH increased. In order to enhance the moisture resistance of cyanate ester resins, modifiers containing silicon or fluorine moieties were introduced. The curing behaviors of the obtained resins, as well as thermal, water absorption, and dielectric properties of all cured polymers, were investigated in detail. Results show that properties of fillers in polymer have great influence on the thermal property and of polymer. In all cases, modifier exhibited percolation threshold at 5 wt%. Compared with pristine cyanate ester resins (CE), when the methyl phenyl silicone resin B filler was added, the cured polymer exhibited water absorption as low as 0.39% and excellent thermal oxygen stability at 300°C. The introduction of silicon H improved thermal oxidative stability at 400°C without significant compromise in processability or mechanical properties.  相似文献

Through addition reaction of Schiff‐base terephthalylidene‐bis‐(p‐aminophenol) ( DP‐1 ) and diethyl phosphite (DEP), a novel phosphorus‐modified epoxy, 4,4'‐diglycidyl‐(terephthalylidene‐bis‐(p‐aminophenol))diphosphonate ether ( EP‐2 ), was obtained. An modification reaction between EP‐2 and DP‐1 resulted in an epoxy compound, EP‐3 , possessing both phosphonate groups and C?N imine groups. The structure of EP‐2 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), elemental analysis (EA), 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR analyses. The thermal properties of phosphorus‐modified epoxies cured with 4,4'‐diaminodiphenylmethane (MDA) and 4,4'‐diaminodiphenyl ether (DDE) were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The activation energies of dynamic thermal degradation (Ed) were calculated using Kissinger and Ozawa's methods. The thermal degradation mechanism was characterized using thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TG‐IR). In addition, the flame retardancy of phosphorus‐modified epoxy thermosets was evaluated using limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL‐94 vertical test methods. Via an ingenious design, phosphonate groups were successfully introduced into the backbone of the epoxies; the flame retardancy of phosphorus‐modified epoxy thermosets was distinctly improved. Due to incorporation of C?N imine group, the phosphorus‐modified epoxy thermosets exhibited high thermal stabilities; the values of glass‐transition temperatures (Tgs) were about 201–210°C, the values of Ed were about 220–490 kJ/mol and char yields at 700°C were 49–53% in nitrogen and 45–50% in air. These results showed an improvement in the thermal properties of phosphorus‐modified epoxy by the incorporation of C?N imine groups. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Blends of a tetrafunctional epoxy resin, tetraglycidyl‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM), and a hydroxyl‐functionalized hyperbranched polymer (HBP), aliphatic hyperbranched polyester Boltorn H40, were prepared using 3,3′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) as curing agent. The phase behavior and morphology of the DDS‐cured epoxy/HBP blends with HBP content up to 30 phr were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase behavior and morphology of the DDS‐cured epoxy/HBP blends were observed to be dependent on the blend composition. Blends with HBP content from 10 to 30 phr, show a particulate morphology where discrete HBP‐rich particles are dispersed in the continuous cured epoxy‐rich matrix. The cured blends with 15 and 20 phr exhibit a bimodal particle size distribution whereas the cured blend with 30 phr HBP demonstrates a monomodal particle size distribution. Mechanical measurements show that at a concentration range of 0–30 phr addition, the HBP is able to almost double the fracture toughness of the unmodified TGDDM epoxy resin. FTIR displays the formation of hydrogen bonding between the epoxy network and the HBP modifier. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 417–424, 2010  相似文献

Molecular motion and thermal stability in two series of nanophase‐separated polyimide–silica (PI–SiO2) hybrid materials with chemically bound components were studied. The hybrids were synthesized from p‐aminophenyltrimethoxysilane‐terminated poly(amic acid)s as PI precursors and tetramethoxysilane as a silica precursor via a sol–gel process. The hybrids differed in their PI chemical structure and chain length (number‐average molecular weight = 5.000, 7.500, or 10.000) and in their SiO2 content, which ranged from 0 to 50 wt %. Differential scanning calorimetry, laser‐interferometric creep rate spectroscopy, and thermally stimulated depolarization current techniques were used for studying the dynamics from 100 to 650 K and from 10?3 to 10?2 Hz. Comparative thermogravimetric measurements were also carried out from 300 to 900 K. Silica nano‐ or submicrodomains that formed affected PI dynamics in two opposite directions. Because of the loosening of the molecular packing of PI chains confined to nanometer‐scale spaces between silica constraints, an enhancement of small‐scale motion, mostly at temperatures below the β‐relaxation region, occurred. However, a partial or total suppression of segmental motion could be observed above the β‐relaxation temperature, drastically so for the shortest PI chains at elevated silica contents and within or close to the glass‐transition range, because of the covalent anchoring of chain ends to silica domains. Large changes in thermal stability, including a 2.5‐fold increase in the apparent activation energy of degradation, were observed in the hybrids studied. A greater than 100 °C rise in long‐term thermal stability could be predicted for some hybrids with respect to pure PI. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A mesogenic‐type curing agent was synthesized to introduce a mesogenic group not only into epoxy resin backbones but also into the crosslink units. In the mesogenic curing agent system, the domain size became larger, and the network arrangement in each domain existed to a greater extent than that in a system cured with the ordinary diamine curing system according to the evidence from polarized optical micrographs and polarized Fourier transform infrared mapping measurements. Moreover, the fracture toughness of the system was considerably improved. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 2486–2494, 2006  相似文献

New series of cycloaliphatic poly(ester‐amide)s, poly(1,4‐cyclohexanedimethyleneterephthalate‐co‐1,3‐cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalamide), were synthesized through solution polymerization route. The compositions of ester/amide units in the copolymers were varied from 0 to 100% by varying the amount of 1,4‐cyclohexanedimethanol and 1,3‐cyclohexanebis(methylamine) in the feed. The structures of the polymers were confirmed by NMR and FTIR, and the molecular weights were determined by inherent viscosity. The composition analysis by NMR reveals that the reactivity of the diamine toward the acid chlorides is lowered than that of diol, which results in the formation of more ester content in the poly (ester‐amides). The thermal analysis indicate that the new poly(ester‐amide)s having less than 10 mol % of amide linkages are thermotropic liquid crystalline from 200 to 250 °C and a thread like nematic phases are observed under the polarizing microscope. WXRD studies suggest that the liquid crystalline domains promote the nucleation process in the polyester chains and increases the percent crystallinity of the poly(ester‐amide)s. The glass transition temperature of the copolymers initially increases with increase in amide units because of the presence of nematic phases and subsequently follows the Flory–Fox behavior. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel epoxy nanocomposites based on a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy, an epoxy functionalized hyperbranched polymer (HTTE) and nano‐Al2O3 were synthesized with the aim of determining the effect of the nano‐Al2O3 particles and HTTE on the structure and properties of epoxy nanocomposites. The mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, bulk resistivity, and thermal stability of the nano‐Al2O3/HTTE/DGEBA ternary composites were evaluated and compared with the corresponding matrix. The improvement in impact properties of these nanocomposites was explained in terms of fracture surface analysis by SEM. The results indicate that the incorporation of nanoparticles and hyperbranched epoxy effectively improved the toughness of epoxy composites without sacrificing thermal conductivity and bulk resistivity compared to the neat epoxy and Al2O3/DGEBA, obtaining a well dispersion of nanoparticles in epoxy matrix and solving the drawbacks for single fillers filled epoxy nanocomposite. A new hyperbranched‐linear‐hyperbranched polymer was prepared in a one pot process by reaction of 4,4‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)valeric acid and poly(ethylene glycol) (HPH). After characterization by 1H and 13C NMR, SEC, DSC, and TGA, this polymer was used, in proportions of 5, 10, and 15 phr, as a chemical modifier in the UV and thermal cationic curing of 3,4‐epoxycyclohexylmethyl‐3′,4′‐epoxycyclohexyl carboxylate epoxy resin. The curing process was studied by calorimetry, demonstrating the accelerating effect of the hydroxyl groups present in HPH's structure. The morphology of the resulting thermosets depended on the curing system used, as demonstrated by FE‐SEM microscopy, but in both cases phase separation occurred. Thermosets obtained by thermal curing presented lower thermal stability than UV‐cured materials. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

A series of hyperbranched polyborates (HB) terminated with phenol hydroxyl (HBp) and boric acid hydroxyl (HBb) functional groups, respectively, were blended with phenolic resins (PR). The miscibility and specific interaction behaviors of the HB and PR were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Cure behaviors and thermal properties of PR containing different content of HB were also studied. In addition, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) exhibited apparent increase in thermal stability at both the initial stages and residue weight at 800 °C under nitrogen atmosphere, especially, for the HBb10/90 system that has a temperature of 458 °C at 5% mass loss and a residue weight of 75.4%. Moreover, scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that the initially homogeneous phase separated into two‐phase structure after the cure process, which offers a route to achieve new properties combinations that are desirable for high performance polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bisphenol‐A‐based difunctional epoxy resin was modified with poly(ether ether ketone) with pendent tert‐butyl groups (PEEKT). PEEKT was synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4,4′‐difluoro benzophenone with tert‐butyl hydroquinone in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone. Blends with various amounts of PEEKT were prepared by melt‐mixing. All the blends were homogeneous in the uncured state. The glass transition temperature of the binary epoxy/PEEKT blends was predicted using several equations. Reaction‐induced phase separation was found to occur upon curing with a diamine 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone. The phase morphology of the blends was studied using scanning electron microscopy. From the micrographs, it was found that PEEKT‐rich phase was dispersed in a continuous epoxy matrix. The domain size increased with the amount of PEEKT in the blends. The increase in domain size was due to the coalescence of the domains after phase separation. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the blends gave two peaks corresponding to epoxy‐rich phase and thermoplastic‐rich phase. The tensile strength and modulus of the blends remained close to that of the unmodified resin, while the flexural properties decreased with the addition of PEEKT to epoxy resin. The fracture toughness of the epoxy resin increased with the addition of PEEKT. Investigation of the fracture surfaces revealed evidences for local plastic deformation of the matrix, crack pinning, crack path deflection, and ductile tearing of PEEKT‐rich phase. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the initial decomposition temperature of the blends were close to that of the unmodified resin. Finally, the properties of the blends were compared with other modified PEEK/epoxy blends. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 2481–2496, 2007  相似文献

Melt rheological behaviors of hyperbranched‐polystyrene (PS) copolymerized by dendric macromonomer technique are presented. The time–temperature superposition principle was applicable to the hyperbranched‐PS. The branched‐PS showed slightly lower zero‐shear viscosity in comparison with linear PS regardless of a presence of a number of branches expected from the dendric macromonomer technique. Although the influence of use of multimethacryloyl macromonomer in the polymerization process was marginal for linear viscoelastic regime, nonlinear shear and uniaxial elongational flows showed distinct differences between linear and branched‐PS. The strain dependence of the damping function became weak as increase of macromonomer content. The branched‐PS exhibited the growing elongational viscosity function comparing with linear PS. This prominent effect on the elongational flow behavior can be explained by the molecular architecture of the branched‐PS. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Highly branched perfluorinated aromatic polyether copolymers were prepared from the polycondensation of the AB2 monomer, 3,5‐bis[(pentafluorobenzyl)oxy]benzyl alcohol with a variety of fluoroaryl and alkyl bromide AB comonomers. The structures and comonomer distribution of the resulting polymers were characterized in detail. 1H NMR data from kinetic trials illustrated that perfluoroaryl AB comonomer distribution correlated to AB comonomer sterics. 19F NMR data revealed that fluorinated AB monomers and 3‐bromo‐1‐propanol AB monomers were distributed within the AB2 polymer backbone, while longer alkyl bromide AB monomers, 6‐bromo‐1‐hexanol, were mostly distributed along hyperbranched polymer chain ends. In general, as AB comonomer incorporation increased for nonsterically hindered copolymers, thermal decomposition onset increased and glass transition temperatures decreased. The combined data demonstrated the effect of comonomer distribution and sterics on physical properties of AB2‐based polymer systems. The resulting materials were used to cast thin polymer films for measurement of contact angle, which were shown to be directly related to comonomer content. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A novel phosphorus‐containing aralkyl novolac (Ar‐DOPO‐N) was prepared from the reaction of 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO) first with terephthaldicarboxaldehyde and subsequently with phenol. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, 1H and 31P NMR, and elemental analysis. Ar‐DOPO‐N blended with phenol formaldehyde novolac was used as a curing agent for o‐cresol formaldehyde novolac epoxy, resulting in cured epoxy resins with various phosphorus contents. The epoxy resins exhibited high glass‐transition temperatures (159–177 °C), good thermal stability (>320 °C), and retardation on thermal degradation rates. High char yields and high limited oxygen indices (26–32.5) were observed, indicating the resins' good flame retardance. Using a melamine‐modified phenol formaldehyde novolac to replace phenol formaldehyde novolac in the curing composition further enhanced the cured epoxy resins' glass‐transition temperatures (160–186 °C) and limited oxygen index values (28–33.5). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A calcium salt of mono(hydroxypentyl)phthalate [Ca(HPP)2] was synthesized by the reaction of 1,5‐pentanediol, phthalic anhydride, and calcium acetate. Four different bisureas such as hexamethylene bis(ω,N‐hydroxyethylurea), tolylene 2,4‐bis(ω,N‐hydroxyethylurea), hexamethylene bis(ω,N‐hydroxypropylurea), and tolylene 2,4‐bis(ω,N‐hydroxypropylurea) were prepared by reacting ethanolamine or propanolamine with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) or tolylene 2,4‐diisocyanate (TDI). Calcium‐containing poly(urethane‐urea)s (PUUs) were synthesized by reacting HMDI or TDI with 1:1 mixtures of Ca(HPP)2 and each of the bisureas with di‐n‐butyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. The PUUs were well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR, solid‐state 13C–cross‐polarization/magic‐angle spinning NMR, viscosity, solubility, elemental analysis, and X‐ray diffraction studies. Thermal properties of the polymers were also examined with thermogravimetric analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
