Low‐charge‐density amphoteric copolymers and terpolymers composed of acrylamide, (3‐acrylamidopropyl)trimethyl ammonium chloride, and the amino acid derived monomers (e.g., N‐acryloyl valine, N‐acryloyl alanine, and N‐acryloyl aspartate) were prepared via free‐radical polymerization in aqueous media to yield terpolymers with random charge distributions and homogeneous compositions. Sodium formate (NaOOCH) was employed as a chain transfer agent during the polymerization to suppress gel effects and broadening of the molecular weight distribution. Terpolymer compositions were determined by 13C and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Terpolymer molecular weights and polydispersity indices were obtained via size exclusion chromatography/multi‐angle laser light scattering, and hydrodynamic diameter values were obtained via dynamic light scattering. The solution properties of low‐charge‐density amphoteric copolymers and terpolymers have been studied as a function of solution pH, ionic strength, and polymer concentration. The low‐charge‐density terpolymers display excellent solubility in deionized (DI) water with no phase separation. The charge‐balanced terpolymers exhibit antipolyelectrolyte behavior at pH values ≥(6.5 ± 0.2). As solution pH is decreased, these charge‐balanced terpolymers become increasingly cationic because of the protonation of the anionic repeat units. Charge‐imbalanced terpolymers generally demonstrate polyelectrolyte behavior, although the effects of intramolecular electrostatic interactions (e.g., polyampholyte effects) on the hydrodynamic volume are evident at certain values of solution pH and salt concentration. The aqueous solution behavior (i.e., globule‐to‐coil transition at the isoelectric point in the presence of salt and globule elongation with increasing charge asymmetry) of the terpolymers in the dilute regime correlates well with that predicted by the polyampholyte solution theories of Dobrynin and Rubinstein as well as Kantor and Kardar. Examination of comonomer charge density, hydrogen‐bonding ability, and spacer group (e.g., the moiety separating the ionic group from the polymer chain) indicates that conformational restrictions of the amino acid comonomers result in increased chain stiffness and higher solution viscosities in DI water and brine solutions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low-charge-density ampholytic terpolymers composed of acrylamide, sodium 3-acrylamido-3-methylbutanoate (NaAMB), and (3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride were prepared via free-radical polymerization in 0.5 M NaCl to yield terpolymers with random charge distributions. NaOOCH was used as a chain-transfer agent during the polymerization to eliminate the effects of the monomer feed composition on the degree of polymerization (DP) and to suppress gel effects and broadening of the molecular weight distribution. The terpolymer compositions were obtained via 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the residual counterion content was determined via elemental analysis for Na+ and Cl. The molecular weights (MWs) and polydispersity indices (PDIs) were determined via size exclusion chromatography/multi-angle laser light scattering (SEC–MALLS); the terpolymer MWs ranged from 1.3–1.6 × 106 g/mol, corresponding to DPs of 1.6–1.9 × 104 repeat units, with all terpolymers exhibiting PDIs of less than 2.0. Intrinsic viscosities determined from SEC–MALLS data and the Flory–Fox relationship were compared to intrinsic viscosities determined via low-shear dilute-solution viscometry and were found to agree rather well. Data from the SEC–MALLS analysis were used to analyze the radius of gyration/molecular weight (RgM) relationships and the Mark–Houwink–Sakurada intrinsic viscosity/molecular weight ([η]–M) relationships for the terpolymers. The RgM and [η]–M relationships revealed that most of the terpolymers exhibited little or no excluded volume effects under size exclusion chromatography conditions. Potentiometric titration of terpolymer solutions in deionized water showed that the apparent pKa value of the poly[acrylamide-co-sodium 3-acrylamido-3-methylbutanoate-co-(3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride] terpolymers increased with increasing NaAMB content in the terpolymers and increasing ratios of anionic monomer to cationic monomer at a constant terpolymer charge density. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solution properties of low‐charge‐density ampholytic terpolymers of acrylamide, sodium 3‐acrylamido‐3‐methylbutanoate, and (3‐acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride were studied as functions of the solution pH, ionic strength, and polymer concentration. Terpolymers with low charge densities, large charge asymmetries, or both exhibited excellent solubility in deionized (DI) water, and higher charge density terpolymers were readily dispersible in DI water; however, the higher charge density terpolymer solutions separated into polymer‐rich and polymer‐poor phases upon standing over time. Charge‐balanced terpolymers exhibited antipolyelectrolyte behavior at pH values greater than or equal to the ambient pH (6.5 ± 0.2); the same terpolymers behaved increasingly as cationic polyelectrolytes with decreasing solution pH because of the protonation of the 3‐acrylamido‐3‐methylbutanoate (AMB) repeat units. Unbalanced terpolymers generally exhibited polyelectrolyte behavior, although the effects of intramolecular electrostatic attractions (i.e., polyampholyte effects) on the hydrodynamic volume of the unbalanced terpolymer coils were evident at certain values of the solution pH and salt concentration. The dilute‐solution behavior of the terpolymers correlated well with the behavior predicted by several polyampholyte solution theories. In the semidilute regime, solution viscosities increased with increasing terpolymer charge density, and this indicated a significant enhancement of the solution viscosity by intermolecular electrostatic associations. Upon the addition of NaCl, semidilute‐solution viscosities tended to decrease because of the disruption of the intermolecular electrostatic associations. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled synthesis and characterization of a range of stimuli responsive cationic terpolymers containing varying amounts of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), 3‐(methylacryloylamino)propyl trimethylammonium chloride (MAPTAC), and poly(ethylene glycol)monomethyl methacrylate (PEGMA) is presented. The terpolymers were synthesized using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Compositions of the terpolymers determined using 1H NMR were in close agreement to the theoretical values determined from the monomer feed ratios. GPC‐MALLS was used to analyze the molecular weight characteristics of the polymers, which were found to have low polydispersities (Mw/Mn 1.1–1.4). The phase transitions were studied as a function of PEGMA and NIPAM content using temperature controlled 1H NMR and turbidity measurements (UV‐Vis). The relationship between thermal stability and the comonomer ratio of the polymers was measured using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Protein interaction studies were performed to determine the suitability of the polymers for biological applications. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A doubly hydrophilic triblock copolymer of poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate)‐b‐Poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethylmethacrylate) (PDMAEMA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PDMAEMA) with well‐defined structure and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.21) was synthesized in aqueous medium via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA) initiated by the PEG macroinitiator. The macroinitiator and triblock copolymer were characterized with 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DSL), transmittance measurement, and rheological characterization were applied to investigate pH‐ and temperature‐induced micellization in the dilute solution of 1 mg/mL when pH > 13 and gelation in the concentrated solution of 25 wt % at pH = 14 and temperatures beyond 80 °C. The unimer of Rh = 3.7 ± 0.8 nm coexisted with micelle of Rh = 45.6 ± 6.5 nm at pH 14. Phase separation occurred in dilute aqueous solution of the triblock copolymer of 1 mg/mL at about 50 °C. Large aggregates with Rh = 300–450 nm were formed after phase separation, which became even larger as Rh = 750–1000 nm with increasing temperature. The gelation temperature determined by rheology measurement was about 80 °C at pH 14 for the 25 wt % aqueous solution of the triblock copolymer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Terpolymers of sodium acrylate (NaA), acrylamide (AM), and the zwitterionic monomer 4-(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanedimethylammonio) butanoate (AMPDAB) were prepared by the free radical polymerization in 0.5M NaBr aqueous solution using potassium persulfate as the initiator. The feed ratio of AMPDAB : NaA : AM was varied from 5 : 5 : 90 to 40 : 40 : 20 mol %, with the total monomer concentration held constant at 0.45M. Terpolymer compositions were determined by 13C NMR. Molecular weights varied from 3.0 × 105 to 9.7 × 106 g/mol. All terpolymers were soluble in deionized water and salt solutions at all pH values. The dilute and semidilute solution behavior of the terpolymers was studied as a function of composition, pH, and added electrolytes. Polyelectrolyte behavior was observed for all terpolymers at pH 8.5, as evidenced by high viscosity values at low polymer concentrations and viscosity decrease in the presence of added electrolytes. The reduced viscosity as a function of decreasing pH exhibits a minimum as the terpolymer undergoes a polyanion/polyzwitterion/polycation transition. Comparison of the solution behavior of the terpolymers to terpolymers of 3-(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane dimethylammonio)-1-propane sulfonate (AMPDAPS), AM, and NaA (AADAPS series) as well as copolymers of AMPDAB and AM (AMPDAB series) have been made. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Novel and well‐defined amphiphilic H‐shaped terpolymers poly(L‐lactide)‐block‐(poly(2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) ‐block‐)poly(ε‐caprolactone)(‐block‐poly(2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)) ‐b‐poly(L‐lactide) (PLLA‐b‐(PDMAEMA‐b‐)PCL(‐b‐PDMAEMA)‐b‐PLLA) were synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization, and click chemistry. The H‐shaped amphiphilic terpolymers can self‐assemble into spherical nano‐micelles in water. Because of the dually responsive (temperature and pH) properties of PDMAEMA segments, the hydrodynamic radius of the micelles of the H‐shaped terpolymer solution can be adjusted by altering the environmental temperature or pH values. The thermal properties investigation and the crystalline morphology analysis indicate that the branched structure of the H‐shaped terpolymers and the presence of amorphous PDMAEMA segments together led to the obvious decrease of PCL segments and the complete destruction of crystallinity of the PLLA segments in the H‐shaped terpolymers. In addition, the H‐shaped terpolymer film has better hydrophilicity than linear PCL or triblock polymer of PLLA‐b‐(N3? )PCL(? N3)‐b‐PLLA, due to the decrease or destruction of the crystallizability of the PCL or PLLA in the H‐shaped terpolymer and the presence of hydrophilic PDMAEMA segments. These unique H‐shaped amphiphilic terpolymers composed of biodegradable and biocompatible PCL and PLLA components and intelligent and biocompatible PDMAEMA component will have the potential applications in biomedical fields. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Temperature‐ and pH‐sensitive copolymers and terpolymers of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) with itaconic acid (IA), monomethyl itaconate (MMeI), monobutyl itaconate (MBuI), monooctyl itaconate (MOcI), monocetyl itaconate (MCeI), and dimethyl itaconate (DMI) were prepared by free radical solution polymerization method. The dependence of coil‐to‐globule transition on pH and composition, molecular structures, and reactivities of monoalkyl itaconates, molecular weight distributions, and glass transition temperatures of copolymers and terpolymers were investigated using FT‐IR and UV–visible spectroscopic techniques, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and acid–base titration methods. The temperature‐/pH‐dependent coil‐to‐globule transition measurements showed that, upon increasing the content and length of alkyl chains, the lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) were shifted to higher temperatures. This meant that with increase in the length of hydrophobic alkyl chain in the monoitaconates intramolecular intreactions between the carboxyl groups were suppressed and LCSTs increased. The aqueous solution behaviors of NIPAAm/IA/DMI terpolymers also revealed that, even if the terpolymer hydrophobicity is increased by adding DMI units, the presence of IA units overcame the decrease in hydrophilicity of the terpolymers. The presence of DMI units in the terpolymers balanced the hydrophilic character of IA. DSC results supported the ones obtained from the pH‐dependent coil‐to‐globule transition measurements. An increase in both the chain length of alkyl groups attached to the monoitaconates and the contents of the mono‐ and dialkyl itaconates in the copolymers and terpolymers decreased the Tgs. In the case of NIPAAm/IA and NIPAAm/MMeI copolymers, the presence of the carboxyl groups forming hydrogen bonds increased the Tg, while the monoalkyl and dialkyl itaconates such as MBuI, MOcI, MCeI and DMI lead to a decrease in Tg of copolymers and terpolymers because of the suppression of intramolecular interactions (resulting from the ? COOH and ? COO? groups) through the longer alkyl spacers. The dependence of the thermosensitivity of these NIPAAm copolymers and terpolymers on different conditions of pH, and the nature and content of comonomers suggests that they can be useful in biotechnology and drug delivery applications which involve small changes in pH and temperature. A series of polyallene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, poly(6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol)‐g‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEMA), was synthesized through the grafting‐from technique. First, double‐bond‐containing PMHDO backbone bearing pendant hydroxyls was prepared via [(η3‐allyl)NiOCOCF3]2‐initiated living coordination polymerization of 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol (MHDO). The pendant hydroxyls in the homopolymer were then reacted with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride to give PMHDO‐Cl macroinitiator. Finally, hydrophilic PDEAEMA side chains were formed by single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) in THF/H2O initiated by the macroinitiator using CuCl/Me6TREN as catalytic system to afford PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEMA graft copolymers. The narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.35) and kinetics experiment showed the controllability of SET‐LRP graft copolymerization of DEAEMA. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEMA amphiphilic graft copolymer in aqueous media was determined by fluorescence probe technique and the relationships between cmc and pH or salinity were also investigated. Micellar morphologies were preliminarily explored using transmission electron microscopy. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

We report the synthesis and gradient stimuli‐responsive properties of cyclodextrin‐overhanging hyperbranched core‐double‐shell miktoarm architectures. A ionic hyperbranched poly(β‐cyclodextrin) (β‐CD) core was firstly synthesized via a convenient “A2+B3” approach. Double‐layered shell architectures, composed of poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm) and poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) miktoarms as the outermost shell linked to poly(N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) homoarms which form the inner shell, were obtained by a sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and parallel click chemistry from the modified hyperbranched poly(β‐CD) macroinitiator. The combined characterization by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 1H‐29Si heteronuclear multiple‐bond correlation (HMBC), FTIR and size exclusion chromatography/multiangle laser light scattering (SEC/MALLS) confirms the remarkable hyperbranched poly(β‐CD) core and double‐shell miktoarm architectures. The gradient triple‐stimuli‐responsive properties of hyperbranched core‐double‐shell miktoarm architectures and the corresponding mechanisms were investigated by UV–vis spectrophotometer and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Results show that this polymer possesses three‐stage phase transition behaviors. The first‐stage phase transition comes from the deprotonation of PDEAEMA segments at pH 9–10 aqueous solution under room temperature. The confined coil‐globule conformation transition of PNIPAm and PDMAEMA arms gives rise to the second‐stage hysteretic cophase transition between 38 and 44 °C at pH 10. The third‐stage phase transition occurs above 44 °C at pH = 10 attributed to the confined secondary conformation transition of partial PDMAEMA segments. This cyclodextrin‐overhanging hyperbranched core‐double‐shell miktoarm architectures are expected to solve the problems of inadequate functionalities from core layer and lacking multiresponsiveness for shell layers existing in the dendritic core‐multishell architectures. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) and poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PEOZO) are a polyacid/polybase pair capable of forming reversible, pH‐responsive, hydrogen‐bonding complexes stabilized by hydrophobic effects in aqueous media. Linear PMA was modified with long‐chain (number‐average molecular weight: 10,000) PEOZO via statistical coupling reactions in organic media to prepare a series of PMA‐graft‐PEOZO copolymers. Potentiometric titrations revealed that the presence of tethered PEOZO markedly increases the pKa values for PMA‐g‐PEOZO copolymers as compared with simple PMA/PEOZO mixtures at degrees of ionization, α, between 0.0 and 0.1. The dilute‐solution PMA–PEOZO intramolecular association has been probed by monitoring the PEOZO NMR spin–spin (T2) relaxation as a function of pH. Covalently attached PEOZO side chains participate in complexation at higher values of α than untethered PEOZO. Surprisingly, most PEOZO side chains did not take part in hydrogen bonding at low α, and the highest level of PEOZO incorporation induced a decrease in the number of PMA/PEOZO hydrogen bonds. The polymer self‐diffusion as a function of α was measured with dynamic light scattering. At low pH, the copolymers had no charge and they were in a collapsed form. At high pH, the expected conformational expansion of the PMA units was enhanced at moderate levels of PEOZO incorporation. However, the highest PEOZO incorporation induced the onset of intramolecular associations between PEOZO units along the copolymer chains. Low shear rheometry and light scattering measurements were used in conjunction with the T2 NMR measurements to propose a model consistent with the aforementioned behavior. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Diblock terpolymers that consist of homopolymer and statistical copolymer (polyampholyte) building blocks are synthesized by group transfer polymerization. Two types of block tepolymers are explored in aqueous media: the amphiphilic poly{[(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐co‐(methacrylic acid)}‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) and the double hydrophilic poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate]‐block‐poly{[(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐co‐(methacrylic acid)}. The first terpolymer self‐assembles in aqueous media to form responsive micelles that change their corona charge sign upon switching pH. The second terpolymer exhibits a multi‐responsive behavior. It forms neutral, positive, or negative micelles depending on a combination of different environmental conditions such as temperature, pH, and ionic strength.

The crosslinking processes of aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by γ‐ray irradiation were studied by viscometry, dynamic and static light scattering (DLS and SLS), as well as size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Increases in the intrinsic viscosity ([η]), molecular weight (Mw), hydrodynamic radius (Rh), and radius of gyration (Rg), and a decrease in second virial coefficient (A2) were observed after γ‐ray irradiation. However, both the values of [η] and A2 for irradiated PVA fell below the data of unirradiated PVA solutions, suggesting a conformational change of PVA chains after γ‐ray irradiation. This structural change of PVA as a result of γ‐ray irradiation was also indicated by the decreases in Rg/Rh from 1.5 to 1.39 by SLS and DLS, and in Mark–Houwink exponent αη from 0.54 to 0.26 by SEC‐Viscometry. The broadening of the Mw distribution (MWD) as indicated by the polydispersity index increased from 2.2 to 6.5 because of γ‐ray irradiation. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Model copolymers of poly(butadiene) (PB) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), PB‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PB, were synthesized by sequential anionic polymerization (high vacuum techniques) of 1,3‐butadiene and hexamethylciclotrisiloxane (D3) on sec‐BuLi followed by chlorosilane‐coupling chemistry. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). SEC and 1H NMR results showed low polydispersity indexes (Mw/Mn) and variable siloxane compositions, whereas DSC and TGA experiments indicated that the thermal stability of the triblock copolymers depends on the PDMS composition. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of L‐lactide (LLA), 1,3‐trimethylene carbonate (TMC) and glycolide (GA) terpolymers (LTG) of different monomer molar ratios were synthesized by using ring‐opening copolymerization. An effective and low‐toxic zirconium (IV) acetylacetonate Zr(Acac)4 was used as catalyst. The viscosity‐average molecular weights (Mη) of obtained polymers were all above 2.2×104 g/mol. The chemical structure and viscosity of terpolymers were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR), 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13CNMR) and an Ubbelohde viscometer. The thermal and mechanical properties were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and stress‐strain measurements. Results suggested that all terpolymers were amorphous and showed good thermal stability. Also it was found that elongation increased with the decreasing of LLA unit. More importantly, terpolymers displayed shape memory property when deformation temperatures were 14‐15 °C above Tg.  相似文献

2, 4‐Dimethylpenta‐1, 3‐diene and 2, 4‐Dimethylpentadienyl Complexes of Rhodium and Iridium The complexes [(η4‐C7H12)RhCl]2 ( 1 ) (C7H12 = 2, 4‐dimethylpenta‐1, 3‐diene) and [(η4‐C7H12)2IrCl] ( 2 ) were obtained by interaction of C7H12 with [(η2‐C2H4)2RhCl]2 and [(η2‐cyclooctene)2IrCl]2, respectively. The reaction of 1 or 2 with CpTl (Cp = η5‐C5H5) yields the compounds [CpM(η4‐C7H12)] ( 3a : M = Rh; 3b : M = Ir). The hydride abstraction at the pentadiene ligand of 3a , b with Ph3CBF4 proceeds differently depending on the solvent. In acetone or THF the “half‐open” metallocenium complexes [CpM(η5‐C7H11)]BF4 ( 4a : M = Rh; 4b : M = Ir) are obtained exclusively. In dichloromethane mixtures are produced which additionally contain the species [(η5‐C7H11)M(η5‐C5H4CPh3)]BF4 ( 5a : M = Rh; 5b : M = Ir) formed by electrophilic substitution at the Cp ring, as well as the η3‐2, 4‐dimethylpentenyl compound [(η3‐C7H13)Rh{η5‐C5H3(CPh3)2}]BF4 ( 6 ). By interaction of 2, 4‐dimethylpentadienyl potassium with 1 or 2 the complexes [(η4‐C7H12)M(η5‐C7H11)] ( 7a : M = Rh; 7b : M = Ir) are generated which show dynamic behaviour in solution; however, attempts to synthesize the “open” metallocenium cations [(η5‐C7H11)2M]+ by hydride abstraction from 7a , b failed. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopically, 4b and 5a also by X‐ray structure analysis.  相似文献

Thermosensitive diethylene glycol‐derived poly(L ‐glutamate) homopolypeptides (i.e., poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu) with different molecular weights (MW) (Mn,GPC = 5380–32520) were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of EG2‐L ‐glutamate N‐carboxyanhydride (EG2‐Glu‐NCA) in N,N‐dimethylformamide solution at 50 °C. Their molecular structure, conformation transition, liquid crystal (LC) phase behavior, lower critical solution temperature (LCST) transition, and morphology evolution were thoroughly characterized by means of FTIR, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide angle X‐ray diffraction, polarized optical microscope, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering. In solid state, the homopolypeptide poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu presented a conformation transition from α‐helix to β‐sheet with increasing their MW at room temperature, while it mainly assumed an α‐helix of 80–86% in aqueous solution. Poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu showed a thermotropic LC phase with a transition temperature of about 100 °C in solid state, while it gave a reversible LCST transition of 34–36 °C in aqueous solution. The amphiphilic homopolypeptide poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu self‐assembled into nanostructures in aqueous solution, and their critical aggregation concentrations decreased with increasing MW. Interestingly, their morphology changed from spherical micelles to worm‐like micelles, then to fiber micelles with increasing MW. This work provides a simple method for the generation of different nanostructures from a thermosensitive biodegradable homopolypeptide. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Common CO2‐based biodegradable polycarbonates like poly(propylene carbonate) or poly(cyclohexene carbonate) are generally hydrophobic, leading to slow biodegradation rate and poor cell adhesion, which limit their applications in the biomedical field. Here hydrophilic polycarbonates were prepared by one‐pot terpolymerization of CO2, propylene oxide (PO), and 2‐((2‐(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)methyl)oxirane (ME3MO) using binary Salen Co(III)‐Cl/PPNCl catalyst system. The resultant terpolymers showed one glass transition temperature (Tg), which decreased with the increase of ME3MO units in the terpolymers (FME3MO). Water contact angles of the resultant terpolymers with FME3MO of 4.2?23.6% were 68?25°, while that of poly(propylene carbonate) was 90°, indicating that the terpolymers became hydrophlilic. Furthermore, the terpolymers with FME3MO more than 25.8% exhibited reversible and rapid thermo‐responsive property in water, and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was highly sensitive to FME3MO. In particular, aqueous solution of the terpolymer with FME3MO of 72.6% showed a LCST around 35.2 °C, close to body temperature, which was promising for biomedical applications, especially for in vivo applications. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined ABC 3‐Miktoarm star‐shaped terpolymers [Poly(styrene)‐Poly(ethylene oxide)‐Poly(ε‐caprolactone)](PS‐PEO‐PCL) with different molecular weight was synthesized by combination of the “living” anionic polymerization with the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) using macro‐initiator strategy. Firstly, the “living” poly(styryl)lithium (PS?Li+) species were capped by 1‐ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether(EEGE) quantitatively and the PS‐EEGE with an active and an ethoxyethyl‐protected hydroxyl group at the same end was obtained. Then, using PS‐EEGE and diphenylmethylpotassium (DPMK) as coinitiator, the diblock copolymers of (PS‐b‐PEO)p with the ethoxyethyl‐protected hydroxyl group at the junction point were achieved by the ROP of EO and the subsequent termination with bromoethane. The diblock copolymers of (PS‐b‐PEO)d with the active hydroxyl group at the junction point were recovered via the cleavage of ethoxyethyl group on (PS‐b‐PEO)p by acidolysis and saponification successively. Finally, the copolymers (PS‐b‐PEO)d served as the macro‐initiator for ROP of ε‐CL in the presence of tin(II)‐bis(2‐ethylhexanoate)(Sn(Oct)2) and the star(PS‐PEO‐PCL) terpolymers were obtained. The target terpolymers and the intermediates were well characterized by 1H‐NMR, MALDI‐TOF MS, FTIR, and SEC. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
