The surface and interface morphologies of polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin‐film blends and bilayers were investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Spin‐coating a drop of a PS solution directly onto a PMMA bottom layer from a common solvent for both polymers yielded lateral domains that exhibited a well‐defined topographical structure. Two common solvents were used in this study. The structure of the films changed progressively as the concentration of the PS solution was varied. The formation of the blend morphology could be explained by the difference in the solubility of the two polymers in the solvent and the dewetting of PS‐rich domains from the PMMA‐rich phase. Films of the PS/PMMA blend and bilayer were annealed at temperatures above their glass‐transition temperatures for up to 70 h. All samples investigated with AFM were covered with PS droplets of various size distributions. Moreover, we investigated the evolution of the annealed PS/PMMA thin‐film blend and bilayer and gave a proper explanation for the formation of a relatively complicated interface inside a larger PS droplet. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to explore the degree of contact between hydrophilic blocks and the substrate, the dewetting behavior of Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) induced by PMMA‐selective acetone vapor were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) for the first time. With the annealing of acetone vapor, the LB films of PS‐b‐PMMA undergo the swelling and coalescing of aggregates, the formation of bicontinuous patterns, the formation of droplets, and the periodic increase and decrease of droplets. The emergence of the bicontinuous patterns indicates that the dewetting occurs via the spinodal dewetting mechanism. The periodic droplet evolution is a novel phenomenon observed for the first time and quite different from the single droplet evolution of spin‐coated films, which is probably due to the degree of contact between PMMA blocks and the substrate in the LB films being larger than that in the latter. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase separation of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends was used as a means to segregate PS‐ or PMMA‐functionalized single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in thin films. Dilute solutions (5 wt % in THF) of 1:1 PS/PMMA blends containing the functionalized nanotubes were spin cast and annealed at 180 °C for 12 h. Two different polymer molecular weights were used (Mn = 8000 or Mn = 22,000), and were of approximately equivalent molecular weight to those attached to the surface of the nanotubes. Nanotube functionalization was accomplished using the Cu(I)‐catalyzed [3 + 2] Huisgen cycloaddition, in which alkyne‐decorated nanotubes were coupled with azide‐terminated polymers, resulting in polymer‐SWNT conjugates that were soluble in THF. Characterization of the annealed films by scanning Raman spectroscopy, which utilized the unique Raman fingerprint of carbon nanotubes, enabled accurate mapping of the functionalized SWNTs within the films relative to the two phase‐separated polymers. It was found that nanotube localization within the phase‐separated polymer films was influenced by the type of polymer attached to the nanotube surface, as well as its molecular weight. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Selective solvent annealing induced phase separation and dewetting in PMMA/SAN blend ultrathin films

Phase behaviors induced by solvent annealing in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene‐ran‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) blend ultrathin films have been investigated by atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Our results indicate that both the phase separation within the blend and the dewetting of the film induced by composition fluctuation take place upon the selective solvent annealing, producing complex structures containing upper droplets (of one phase) and mimic‐films (of the other rich‐phase). The use of acetic acid (the selective solvent for PMMA) generates PMMA mimic‐film and SAN droplets, while the introduction of DMF (exhibiting better solubility for SAN) vapor results in the formation of SAN mimic‐film and PMMA droplets. Essentially, the interaction at polymer/substrate interface, resultant wettability of selected component, solubility of PMMA and SAN in adopted solvent dominate not only the phase separation and the dewetting of the whole film but also the synergism of them. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate the directional alignment of perpendicular‐lamellae domains in fluorinated three‐armed star block polymer (BP) thin films using solvent vapor annealing with shear stress. The control of orientation and alignment was accomplished without any substrate surface modification. Additionally, three‐armed star poly(methyl methacrylate‐block‐styrene) [PMMA‐PS] and poly(octafluoropentyl methacrylate‐block‐styrene) were compared to their linear analogues to examine the impact of fluorine content and star architecture on self‐assembled BP feature sizes and interdomain density profiles. X‐ray reflectometry results indicated that the star BP molecular architecture increased the effective polymer segregation strength and could possibly facilitate reduced polymer domain spacings, which are useful in next‐generation nanolithographic applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of the study is to formulate exclusive block copolymer (BCP) nanocomposites by dispersing bcp end‐grafted nanoparticles (bcp‐g‐nps) of PMMA‐b‐PS‐g‐TiO2 within PS‐b‐PMMA matrix. PMMA‐b‐PS‐g‐TiO2 is synthesized using a “grafting‐to” approach and characterized by XPS and TGA to establish that the copolymer chains were bonded to NPs. Good dispersion of bcp‐g‐nps in PMMA and PS‐PMMA bcp films is observed, in contrast to poor dispersion in PS films. In PS‐PMMA films, the compatible and identical bcp nature of the end‐grafted polymer, and large NP size caused it to span across entire PS‐PMMA domains. Poor and good dispersion in PS and PMMA matrices, respectively, can be rationalized by the fact that NPs interactions are driven by the PMMA at the outer corona of the bcp‐g‐nps. Developing bcp‐g‐nps as a strategic route to preparation of highly dispersed high permittivity NPs like titanium dioxide (TiO2) in bcp matrix can have important ramifications for energy storage devices. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Self‐assembly of diblock copolymers (BCP) into periodic arrays is a promising route to generate templates for the fabrication of nanoscopic elements, when one block is selectively removed. In cylindrical morphology polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) copolymer (BCP) films, the efficiency of different processes for removing the PMMA from cylinders is studied using grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering (GISAXS), x‐ray reflectivity and critical dimension scanning electron microscopy. The detailed analysis of the GISAXS patterns leads to the determination of the depth of cylindrical holes left by removal of the PMMA. It is found that the combination of a preliminary UV exposure followed by a wet treatment allows to remove totally the PMMA blocks. Furthermore, the optimization of both UV exposition time and solvent allows to preserve the PS matrix and interestingly for nanolithographic applications to decrease the process costs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ultrathin films of polystyrene (PS) were grown from self‐assembled monolayers by the “grafting‐from” technique. The initiating system consisted of a dithiol azobisisobutyronitrile‐type free‐radical initiator that was activated by irradiation at 300 nm. The thickness of the PS films ranged from 7 to 190 nm and could be controlled by varying the reaction time or the monomer concentration. The films were characterized by ellipsometry and Fourier transform‐reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy after Soxhlet extraction of residual physisorbed polymer. These films were unstable above 60 °C, and a water‐jacketed Soxhlet extractor was designed to maintain solvent temperatures below 45 °C during extraction. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A controlled co‐solvent vapor annealing system was designed and constructed to investigate the effects of solvent vapor activity during the rapid ambient quenching process on the morphology of a cylinder‐forming poly(styrene)‐b‐poly (ethylene oxide) (PS‐PEO) annealed in toluene and water vapor. A phase transformation from cylinders in the bulk to close‐packed spheres in swollen thin films occurred, which was reversed upon quenching with dry nitrogen. Quenching with humidified nitrogen preserved the spherical morphology but could significantly alter domain spacing and reduce long‐range order in the dried films under some circumstances. Specifically, long‐range order in the quenched films was found to decrease as the quenching humidity decreased from the humidity used during annealing, and the best long‐range order was obtained when the humidity remained consistent throughout both annealing and quenching. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Towards a better mixing of two incompatible polymers by casting from solution without compatibilizer
V. Christopoulou D. Papanagopoulos A. Dondos 《Journal of Polymer Science.Polymer Physics》1998,36(6):1051-1060
Blends of polystyrene/poly(oxyethylene) (PS/POE) and polystyrene/poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PS/PMMA) have been obtained by casting from solution. Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Optical Microscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that two incompatible polymers can present relatively good miscibility (formation of domains smaller than 5 μm) when the solvent from which the films are obtained does not present any noticeable selectivity towards the two polymers of the blends. An increase of the casting temperature increases the miscibility of PS and PMMA because the selectivity of the solvent used, towards these polymers decreases with increasing temperature. On the contrary, an increase of the casting temperature in the case of the PS and POE mixture decreases their miscibility because the selectivity of the solvent used increases with increasing temperature. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Thin binary blends of poly(styrene‐b‐methyl methacrylate) (PS‐PMMA) block copolymers in films where the lamellar thickness of one domain is controlled while preserving the thickness of the other domain were demonstrated without microphase separation. One of the block copolymers used here was short and symmetric, and the other was long and asymmetric; the molecular weights of the PMMA block chains in the constituents were similar. A random copolymer brush was introduced and film thickness and composition of brush were adjusted to induce perpendicular orientation in thin film. As the blend composition of the long asymmetric block copolymer increased, the PS lamellar thickness increased from 15.8 to 25.1 nm, whereas the PMMA lamellar thickness remained constant at approximately 14 nm (the thickness decreased slightly from 14.0 to 13.3 nm). The domain spacing behavior in thin film was consistent in the bulk. These results were compared with the Birshtein, Zhulina, and Lyatskaya model and the theories for pure block copolymers in the strong segregation limit and in the intermediate segregation regime. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Morphology, thermal and rheological properties of polymer‐organoclay composites prepared by melt‐blending of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and PS/PMMA blends with Cloisite® organoclays were examined by transmission electron microscopy, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and rheological techniques. Organoclay particles were finely dispersed and predominantly delaminated in PMMA‐clay composites, whereas organoclays formed micrometer‐sized aggregates in PS‐clay composites. In PS/PMMA blends, the majority of clay particles was concentrated in the PMMA phase and in the interfacial region between PS and PMMA. Although incompatible PS/PMMA blends remained phase‐separated after being melt‐blended with organoclays, the addition of organoclays resulted in a drastic reduction in the average microdomain sizes (from 1–1.5 μm to ca. 300–500 nm), indicating that organoclays partially compatibilized the immiscible PS/PMMA blends. The effect of surfactant (di‐methyl di‐octadecyl‐ammonia chloride), used in the preparation of organoclays, on the PS/PMMA miscibility was also investigated. The free surfactant was more compatible with PMMA than with PS; the surfactant was concentrated in PMMA and in the interfacial region of the blends. The microdomain size reduction resulting from the addition of organoclays was definitely more significant than that caused by adding the same amount of free surfactant without clay. The effect of organoclays on the rheological properties was insignificant in all tested systems, suggesting weak interactions between the clay particles and the polymer matrix. In the PS system, PMMA, and organoclay the extent of clay exfoliation and the resultant properties are controlled by the compatibility between the polymer matrix and the surfactant rather than by interactions between the polymer and the clay surface. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrically conductive polyaniline (PANi)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) coaxial fibers were prepared through the chemical deposition of PANi onto preformed PMMA fibers via in situ polymerization. PMMA fibers were prepared as core materials via electrospinning. Spectral studies and scanning electron microscopy observations indicated the formation of PANi/PMMA coaxial fibers with a diameter of approximately 290 nm and a PANi layer thickness of approximately 30 nm. The conductivity of the PANi/PMMA coaxial fibers was significantly higher than that of electrospun fibers of PANi/poly(ethylene oxide) blends and blend cast films of the same PANi composition. To reproducibly generate uniform‐core polymer fibers, the organic solution properties that affected the morphology and diameter of the electrospun fibers were investigated. The polymer molecular weight, solution concentration, solvent dielectric constant, and addition of soluble organic salts were strongly correlated to the morphology of the electrospun fiber mat. In particular, the dielectric constants of the solvents substantially influenced both the fiber diameter and bead formation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A–B–A block copolymers which consist of poly(norbornene‐co‐1‐octene) and atactic polypropylene (PP) segments were synthesized by using ansa‐fluorenylamidotitanium complex as a catalyst varying the ratio of norbornene, 1‐octene, and propylene. The copolymer was obtained quantitatively with high molecular weight (>100,000) and narrow molecular weight distribution (polydispersity index, <1.5). A–B block copolymers of poly(norbornene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was also obtained by the same procedure. Mechanical and optical properties of these copolymer films, which were obtained by solution casting process, were also investigated. Introduction of PP soft segment greatly improved mechanical properties, keeping their high transparency. Introduction of PMMA block also increased the tensile strength. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The binary interaction energies between styrene and various methacrylates were determined from newly examined phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory. Because the blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly(cyclohexylmethacrylate) (PCHMA) were only miscible at high molecular weights when the blends were prepared by solution casting from tetrahydrofuran, we examined the miscibility of other blends by changing the molecular weights of PS or methacrylate polymers. On the basis of the phase‐separation temperature caused by the lower critical solution temperature, the miscibility of PS with the various methacrylates appeared to be in the order PCHMA > poly(n‐propyl‐methacrylate) (PnPMA) > poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) > poly(n‐butyl‐methacrylate) (PnBMA) > poly(iso‐butyl‐methacrylate) > poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) > poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate), and the branching of butylmethacrylate appeared to decrease the miscibility with PS. The interaction energies between PS with various methacrylates obtained from phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory reached minimum value corresponding to the styrene/n‐propylmethacrylate interaction. They were in the order PnPMA < PEMA < PCHMA < PnBMA < PMMA. The difference in the order of miscibility and interaction energies might be attributed to the terms related to the compressibility. The phase‐separation temperatures calculated with the interaction energies obtained here indicated that the PS/PEMA and PS/PnPMA blends at high molecular weights were miscible, whereas the PS/PnBMA blends were immiscible at high molecular weights. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Multiarm star triblock terpolymers were obtained by using two different click reactions sequentially: Cu(I) catalyzed azide–alkyne and Diels–Alder. The synthetic strategy is described as follows: (poly(methyl methacrylate))n‐(polystyrene)m‐poly(divinyl benzene)) ((PMMA)n‐(PS)m‐polyDVB) multiarm star diblock copolymer was first obtained from an azide–alkyne click reaction of (alkyne‐PS)m‐polyDVB multiarm star polymer with α‐anthracene‐ω‐azide PMMA (anth‐PMMA‐N3), followed by a Diels–Alder click reaction of the anthracene groups at the star periphery with α‐maleimide poly (tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA‐MI) or α‐maleimide poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG‐MI) leading to target (PtBA)k‐(PMMA)n‐(PS)m‐polyDVB and (PEG)p‐(PMMA)n‐(PS)m‐polyDVB multiarm star triblock terpolymers. The hydrodynamic diameter of individual multiarm star triblock terpolymers were measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) to be ~24–27 nm in consistent with the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images on silicon substrates. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silica nanoparticles (17 ± 4 nm in diameter) were modified by grafting polystyrene chains to the surfaces using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The molecular weight of the grafted chains ranged from 8 to 48 kDa. These modified nanoparticles were mixed in solution with poly(styrene) homopolymer (18–120 kDa) and symmetric poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene) (PS‐PB) diblock copolymer (34–465 kDa) and the states of dispersion in the dried composites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the so‐called wet brush limit, when the graft molecular weight equals or exceeds the matrix value, the silica particles form a uniform random dispersion in poly(styrene). Increasing the homopolymer matrix, molecular weight above the graft value results in particle clustering and macroscopic‐phase separation. Mixtures of the lamellar forming block copolymer and nanoparticles exhibit a very different trend, with particle clustering at the lower PS‐PB molecular weights and dispersion at the highest value. This latter finding is rationalized on the basis of packing constraints associated with lamellar order and the effective particle dimensions, and the degree of solvation at ordering, both of which favor higher molecular weight block copolymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanoparticles provide an attractive route to modifying polymer thin film properties, yet controlling the dispersion and morphology of functionalized nanoparticle filled films is often difficult. Block copolymers can provide an ideal template for directed assembly of nanoparticles under controlled nanoparticle‐polymer interactions. Previously we observed that neat films of cylinder forming poly(styrene‐b‐methyl methacrylate) PS‐b‐PMMA block copolymer (c‐BCP) orient vertically with dynamic sharp thermal cold zone annealing (CZA‐S) over wide range of CZA‐S speed (0.1–10) μm/s. Here, we introduce a low concentration (1–5 wt %) of nanoparticles of phenolic group functionalized CdS (fCdS‐NP), to PMMA cylinder forming polystyrene‐b‐poly (methyl methacrylate) block copolymer (c‐BCP) films. Addition of the fCdS‐NP induces a vertical to horizontal orientation transition at low CZA‐S speed, V = 5 μm/s. The orientation flip studies were analyzed using AFM and GISAXS. These results confirm generality of our previously observed orientation transition in c‐BCP under low speed CZA‐S with other nanoparticles (gold [Au‐NP], fulleropyrrolidine [NCPF‐NP]) in the same concentration range, but reveal new aspects not previously examined: (1) A novel observation of significant vertical order recovery from 5–10% vertical cylindrical fraction at V = 5 μm/s to 46–63% vertical cylindrical fraction occurring at high CZA‐S speed, V = 10 μm/s for the fCdS nanoparticle filled films. (2) We rule out the possibility that a nanoparticle wetting layer on the substrate is responsible for the vertical to horizontal flipping transition. (3) We demonstrate that the orientation flipping results can be achieved in a nanoparticle block copolymer system where the nanoparticles are apparently better‐dispersed within only one (matrix PS) domain unlike our previous nanoparticle system studied. We consider facile processing conditions to fabricate functionalized nanoparticles filled PS‐PMMA block copolymer films with controlled anisotropy, a useful strategy in the design of next generation electronic and photonic materials. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thin films (monolayer and bilayer) of cylinder forming polystyrene‐block‐polydimethylsiloxane (PS‐b‐PDMS) were shear aligned by the swelling and deswelling of a crosslinked PDMS pad that was physically adhered to the film during solvent vapor annealing. The nanostructures formed by self‐assembly were exposed to ultraviolet‐ozone to partially oxidize the PDMS, followed by calcination in air at 500 °C. In this process, the PS segments were fully decomposed, while the PDMS yielded silica nanostructures. The highly aligned PDMS cylinders were thus deposited as silica nanolines on the silicon substrate. Using a bilayer film, the center‐to‐center distance of these features were effectively halved from 38 to 19 nm. Similarly, by sequential shear‐alignment of two distinct layers, a rhombic array of silica nanolines was fabricated. This methodology provides a facile route to fabricating complex topographically patterned nanostructures. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2015 , 53, 1058–1064 相似文献
