The precipitation polymerization of acrylic acid in supercritical carbon dioxide was studied in a continuous stirred tank reactor with 2,2′‐azobis(2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) as the free‐radical initiator. The reactor temperature was between 50 and 90 °C, the pressure was 207 bar, and the average residence time was between 12 and 40 min. The product polymer was a white, dry, fine powder that dissolved in water. A wide range of polymer molecular weights (5–200 kg/mol) was obtained. The effects of the operating variables on the polymerization rate and on the polymer molecular weight were evaluated. The observed kinetics suggested that polymerization took place in both the supercritical fluid and the precipitated polymer particles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is an inexpensive and environmentally friendly medium for radical polymerizations. ScCO2 is suited for heterogeneous controlled/living radical polymerizations (CLRPs), since the monomer, initiator, and control reagents (nitroxide, etc.) are soluble, but the polymer formed is insoluble beyond a critical degree of polymerization (Jcrit). The precipitated polymer can continue growing in (only) the particle phase giving living polymer of controlled well‐defined microstructure. The addition of a colloidal stabilizer gives a dispersion polymerization with well‐defined colloidal particles being formed. In recent years, nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization have all been conducted as heterogeneous polymerizations in scCO2. This Highlight reviews this recent body of work, and describes the unique characteristics of scCO2 that allows composite particle formation of unique morphology to be achieved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For some polymers, the rate of solid‐state polymerization (SSP) is higher with supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as the sweep gas than with atmospheric N2. One explanation for this higher rate is that the diffusion coefficient of the condensate molecule is higher in the CO2‐swollen polymer. To investigate this hypothesis, we measured the diffusion coefficient of phenol in poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (BPA‐PC) by carrying out SSP of this polymer under diffusion‐limited conditions. Under these conditions, the diffusion coefficient of the condensate molecule could be calculated from the profile of the molecular weight versus time. The phenol diffusivity was determined between 135 and 180 °C in the presence of N2 at about 1 bar and in the presence of scCO2 at about 138, 207, and 345 bar. The diffusion coefficient of phenol was up to 200% higher in scCO2 than in N2, depending on the temperature and CO2 pressure. With both N2 and scCO2, the activation energy for phenol diffusion in BPA‐PC was larger than the activation energy for the reaction between hydroxyl and phenyl end groups that occurred during SSP of BPA‐PC. As a result, the overall SSP reaction shifted from diffusion control at low temperatures toward chemical‐reaction control at high temperatures. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The heterogeneous polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) was investigated at 50 °C with supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a dispersing medium and diethylperoxidicarbonate as an initiator in the presence of different perfluoropolyether surfactants. When FLK 7004A ammonium carboxylate salts were used at a 5% (w/w) concentration with respect to VDF, with an initial pressure of 31–45 MPa and with an olefin concentration of about 5.5 mol/L, monomer conversions up to 63% were obtained, corresponding to a final solid content higher than 200 g/L, and the polymer was collected at the end of the process in the form of a white powder completely composed of microspheres. The effects of the density of the polymerization mixture, the monomer loading, and the surfactant concentration were studied. Collected experimental results suggest that Fluorolink ammonium perfluoropolyether carboxylic salts are the most effective surfactants yet tested in the dispersion polymerization of VDF in scCO2. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymerization of 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone in supercritical carbon dioxide in the presence of ibuprofen as a model drug was investigated as a new one‐pot process for the preparation of polymer‐based drug delivery systems (DDSs). The composites were prepared at 65 °C and P = 31–42 MPa by changing the initial concentration of the drug and the concentration of a crosslinking agent and that of a hydrophobic comonomer. The effects of these parameters on the performances of the polymerization and on the in vitro release kinetics of ibuprofen were studied. In all the experiments, part of the drug was entrapped inside the polymer particles and dissolved more slowly with respect to the pure compound. Copolymerization with methyl methacrylate was the most effective route to obtain a DDS with sustained temporal release of the drug molecule. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Specific imine bases (IB) in conjunction with various isocyanates (IC) mediate the radical polymerization of radically polymerizable monomers such as methyl methacrylate (MMA). Advantageously, the 2‐(methylmercapto)‐2‐thiazoline MMT/IC combination as initiator works even at room temperature for polymerization of MMA. The coefficients a, b, and c of the basic rate law of monomer consumption d[M]/dt = kp·[IC]a·[IB]b·[M]c were determined. The order a has been determined to 0.5 showing the root law of radical polymerization with respect to the IC component as initiator. Moreover, b and c amount 1. The initiator combination MMT/ IC was applied to determine the influence of the molecular structure of the IC on the rate of monomer conversion. For aromatic isocyantes, the gross rate constant of monomer consumption correlates with the Hammet constant of aromatic substituents. The activation energies of the gross polymerization rate constant of several initiator mixtures were determined whereby the value of EA,Br was found to be between typical values of radical polymerization initiated by photochemical reactions (~20 kJ/mol) and commonly used thermal decomposing initiators (~80 kJ/mol). Presumptions on the initiating and terminating step of the IB/IC mediated polymerization were done by means of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and the elemental composition of the head and end group of the resulting polymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the first time, stabilizer‐free vinylidene fluoride (VDF) homopolymerizations were carried out in homogenous phase with supercritical CO2 using the conventional initiator di‐tert butyl peroxide (DTBP). In‐line FT‐NIR spectroscopy showed that complete monomer conversion may be obtained. Molecular weights were determined via size‐exclusion chromatography and polymer endgroup analysis by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The number average molecular weights were below 104 g mol?1 and polydispersities ranged from 3.1 to 5.7 depending on DTBP and VDF concentration. For allowing isothermal reaction, high CO2 contents ranging from 61 to 83 wt % were used. The high‐temperature and high‐pressure conditions required for homogeneous polymerization did not alter the amount of defects in VDF chaining. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that regular stack‐type particles are obtained upon expansion of the homogeneous polymerization mixture. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the successful precipitation polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) at pressures ranging from 15 to 27 MPa utilizing 2, 2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a free radical initiator. The effects of the reaction pressure, initiator concentration, monomer concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time were investigated. Analyses by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that in all reaction conditions, polymerization in the absence of stabilizer led to the formation of large aggregates of partially coalesced particles, with diameters of approximate 1–10 µm. Analyses by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) indicated that for the reaction pressure, initiator concentration, monomer concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time studied there are appreciable effect on product molecular weight. Chain‐free radical polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) was carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), at 50 °C and 121–133 bar, with tertiary‐amyl‐per‐pivalate as a free radical initiator, using a 5‐L pilot scale batch reactor. Experiments were carried out both in the absence and in the presence of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) carboxylate surfactants. Stabilizers were employed under the free acid form and as sodium and calcium salts. An expanded fibrillated poly(TFE) was obtained in all experiments. In the case of surfactant‐free polymerizations, the product was mainly constituted by irregular shape macroparticles having size in the range 200–500 μm. Quite interestingly, when the free acid surfactant was used, a clear acceleration of the polymerization rate was observed and smaller polymer particles with more regular quasi‐spherical morphology were obtained. Melt fusion crystallinity of as‐polymerized poly(TFE) seemed not substantially affected by the presence of the stabilizers and was rather high (80–86%) suggesting that polymerization mainly occurs at polymer particle surface. All these elements suggest that FLUOROLINK® 7004H PFPE carboxylic acid decreases coagulation of primary polymer particles leading to an increase in polymer surface area. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric forms of ionic liquids have many potential applications because of their high thermal stability and ionic nature. Two ionic liquid monomers, 1‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐3‐butyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (VBIT) and 1‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐3‐ butyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate (VBIH), were synthesized through the quaternization of N‐butylimidazole with 4‐vinylbenzylchloride and a subsequent anion‐ exchange reaction with sodium tetrafluoroborate or potassium hexafluorophosphate. Copper‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization was used to polymerize VBIT and VBIH. The effects of various initiator/catalyst systems, monomer concentrations, solvent polarities, and reaction temperatures on the polymerization were examined. The polymerization was well controlled and exhibited living characteristics when CuBr/1,1,4,7,10,10‐hexamethyltriethylenetetramine or CuBr/2,2′‐bipyridine was used as the catalyst and ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate was used as the initiator. Characterizations by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and X‐ray diffraction showed that the resulting VBIT polymer, poly[1‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐3‐butyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate] (PVBIT), was amorphous and had excellent thermal stability, with a glass‐transition temperature of 84 °C. The polymerized ionic liquids could absorb CO2 as ionic liquids: PVBIT absorbed 0.30% (w/w) CO2 at room temperature and 0.78 atm. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Herein we report a successful dispersion polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in a carbon dioxide continuous phase with a block copolymer consisting of polystyrene and poly(1,1‐dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) as a stabilizer. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was effectively emulsified in carbon dioxide with the amphiphilic diblock copolymer surfactant, and the successful stabilization of the polymerization simultaneously gave spherical particles in the submicrometer range with relatively narrow particle size distributions. The initial concentrations of HEMA and the stabilizer and the pressure had substantial effects on the size of the colloidal particles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The diffusion coefficients are reported of rubbery ternary systems consisting of the polymer, its monomer analogue (i.e., the saturated equivalent of the monomer), and trace quantities of oligomers (dimer, trimer, tetramer and hexamer) for 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). These have been obtained with pulsed‐field‐gradient NMR spectroscopy with a polymer weight fraction (fp) of 0 ≤ fp ≤ 0.4. The oligomers are macromonomers synthesized with a cobalt catalytic chain‐transfer agent. The diffusion coefficients are about an order of magnitude smaller than those for monomers such as methyl methacrylate; this effect is ascribed to hydrogen bonding in HEMA. The diffusion coefficient Di of an i‐meric oligomer has been fitted with moderate accuracy by an empirical universal scaling relation, Di(fp)/D1(fp) ≈ i, previously found to provide an adequate fit to corresponding data for styrene and for methyl and butyl methacrylates. The approximate empirical scaling relation seems to hold for a remarkably wide range of types of monomer/polymer systems. These results are of use in modeling rates and molecular weight distributions in free‐radical polymerization, particularly for termination (which is chain‐length‐dependent and is controlled by the diffusion coefficient of chains of the low degrees of polymerization studied here). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has been the subject of much recent interest, although few publications describe the development of stabilizers to produce biodegradable particles of poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and polyglycolide (PGA). Here we describe the synthesis of a series of novel fluorinated diblock copolymers by the acid‐catalyzed esterification of well‐defined blocks of polycaprolactone (PCL) with Krytox 157FSL, a carboxylic acid terminated perfluoropolyether. These diblock copolymers were then tested as stabilizers in the ROP of glycolide and L ‐lactide, or a mixture of the two, in scCO2, and this resulted in the corresponding homopolymers or random copolymers. In the absence of stabilizers, only aggregated solids were formed. When the reaction was repeated with a stabilizer, PGA and PLLA were obtained as discrete microparticles. The stabilizer efficiency increased as the length of the polymer‐philic PCL block increased. One optimized stabilizer worked at loadings as low as 3% (w/w) with respect to the monomer, demonstrating these to be extremely effective stabilizers. It was found that to produce microparticles with this process, the product polymers must be semicrystalline; amorphous polymers, such as poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide), are plasticized by scCO2 and yield only aggregated solids rather than discrete particles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible chain transfer catalyzed polymerization (RTCP) in dispersion polymerization system (dispersion RTCP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was performed with N‐iodosuccimide (NIS) as a nitrogen catalyst in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The solubility of NIS in scCO2 can be controlled by tuning the pressure, and this led to promote NIS partitioning into polymerizing particles. As a result, the molecular weight distribution control was successfully improved by decreasing the NIS solubility in the medium by tuning the scCO2 at a low pressure of 20 MPa. On the other hand, at the same NIS concentration, a solution RTCP of MMA in toluene as a homogeneous polymerization system did not proceed with a controlled/living manner. The importance of NIS partitioning into the polymerizing particles was also confirmed in hexane as well as scCO2 medium. From these results, it was clarified that the NIS catalyst partitioning into the polymerizing particles as main polymerization loci is a key factor to control the molecular weight distribution in the dispersion RTCP of MMA in scCO2. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, hemicyanine dye–borate complexes, for example, 1,3‐dimethyl‐2‐[4‐(N,N‐dialkylamino)styryl]benzimidazolium phenyl‐tri‐n‐butylborates, were employed as the novel, very effective photoinitiators operating in the visible light region. The influence of the sensitizers and electron donor structure on the photopolymerization kinetics of multiacrylate monomer was investigated by photo‐DSC. The maximum photopolymerization quantum yield measured for 2‐ethyl‐2‐(hydroxymethyl)‐1,3‐propanediol triacrylate (TMPTA) was about 67 for sample of thickness of about 1 mm under 100 mW/cm2 laser irradiation. It was found that the polymerization rate and the final conversion degree were depended on the dye structure. Moreover, the photoinitiating systems described gave a double bond conversion higher than the photoinitiator possessing as chromophore RBAX (Rose Bengal derivative), the common triplet state initiator. Additionally, the rate of photopolymerization depends on ΔGel of electron transfer between borate anion and styrylbenzimidazolium cation. This latter value was estimated for a series of styrylbenzimidazolium borate salts. The relationship between the rate of polymerization and the free energy of activation for electron transfer reaction gives the dependence predicted by the classical theory of electron transfer. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we propose that retardation in vinyl acetate polymerization rate in the presence of toluene is due to degradative chain transfer. The transfer constant to toluene (Ctrs) determined using the Mayo method is equal to 3.8 × 10?3, which is remarkably similar to the value calculated from the rate data, assuming degradative chain transfer (2.7 × 10?3). Simulations, including chain‐length‐dependent termination, were carried out to compare our degradative chain transfer model with experimental results. The conversion–time profiles showed excellent agreement between experiment and simulation. Good agreement was found for the Mn data as a function of conversion. The experimental and simulation data strongly support the postulate that degradative chain transfer is the dominant kinetic mechanism. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal frontal polymerization is a process in which a localized reaction propagates through an unstirred system by the coupling of the thermal diffusion and the Arrhenius kinetics of an exothermic polymerization. A trithiol was found to affect the front velocity and the time for inducing a front upon exposure to UV light for trimethylolpropane triacrylate polymerization fronts with either kaolin or calcium carbonate filler present. The addition of trithiol and filler both decreased the front velocity. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 8091–8096, 2008  相似文献

Five N‐methylpicolinium derivatives were investigated to test their abilities to function as second coinitiators in free radical photopolymerization initiated by N,N′‐diethylcarbocyanine—n‐butyltriphenylborate photoredox pair ( P19B2 ). As it is shown by the kinetic data, an addition of picolinium derivatives into P19B2 photoinitiating system visibly increases the efficiency of photoinitiation. The results suggest that the rates of photoinitiation depend on the rate of the picolyl radicals formation. The redox potentials of tested N‐methylpicolinium derivatives were measured and the calculation of free energy change for the possible electron transfer reactions between all components of the system (both stable and transient individuals) was performed. The results suggest that cyanine dyes are able to start a specific chain of an electron transfer reactions involving different coinitiators (borate salt and N‐alkylpicolinium derivatives), giving as a result one photon—two‐radicals photochemical response. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
