The ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) using imidodiphosphoric acid (IDPA) as the organocatalyst and benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as the initiator has been investigated. The polymerization proceeded without decarboxylation to afford poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMiC) with controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. 1H NMR, SEC, and MALDI‐TOF MS measurements of the obtained PTMC clearly indicated the quantitative incorporation of the initiator at the chain end. The controlled/living nature for the IDPA‐catalyzed ROP of TMC was confirmed by the kinetic and chain extension experiments. A bifunctional activation mechanism was proposed for IDPA catalysis based on NMR and FTIR studies. Additionally, 1,3‐propanediol, 1,1,1‐trimethylolpropane, and pentaerythritol were used as di‐ol, tri‐, and tetra‐ol initiators, producing the telechelic or star‐shaped polycarbonates with narrow polydispersity indices. The well‐defined diblock copolymers, poly(trimethylene carbonate)‐block‐poly(δ‐valerolactone) and poly(trimethylene carbonate)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone), have been successfully synthesized by using the IDPA catalysis system. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ring‐opening polymerizations of trimethylene carbonate (TC) and 2,2‐dimethyltrimethylene carbonate (DTC) are initiated from hydroxyl‐terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) and PEG‐based surfactants (Triton X‐100 or Triton X‐405) in the absence of any catalysts. The metal‐ and solvent‐free polymerizations proceed under melt at 150 °C, affording Triton X‐100‐block‐poly(TC) with Mn of 1400–5200 and Triton X‐100‐block‐poly(DTC) with Mn of 1800–7100 in excellent yields. The molecular weights and the comonomer composition of the resulting copolymers are controlled by the feed ratios of the monomers to the initiators, confirmed by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The solubilities of the block copolymers composed of hydrophilic PEG segment and hydrophobic poly(TC) or poly(DTC) segment depend on both the compositions and the components. For example, Triton X‐100‐block‐poly (TC) (TC/EG = 9.5/9.5) and Triton X‐405‐block‐poly(TC) (TC/EG = 28/40, 46/40) milky suspend in water, while Triton X‐405‐block‐poly(TC) (TC/EG = 9.7/40) dissolves in water. A dynamic light scattering study reveals that the particle distribution of a copolymer, Triton X‐405‐block‐poly(TC) (TC/EG = 9.7/40) in water, has a monodisperse unimodal pattern ranging from 92 to 368 nm. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. AB‐type block copolymers with poly(trimethylene carbonate) [poly(TMC); A] and poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO; B; number‐average molecular weight (Mn) = 5000] blocks [poly(TMC)‐b‐PEO] were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) in the presence of monohydroxy PEO with stannous octoate as a catalyst. Mn of the resulting copolymers increased with increasing TMC content in the feed at a constant molar ratio of the monomer to the catalyst (monomer/catalyst = 125). The thermal properties of the AB diblock copolymers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. The melting temperature of the PEO blocks was lower than that of the homopolymer, and the crystallinity of the PEO block decreased as the length of the poly(TMC) blocks increased. The glass‐transition temperature of the poly(TMC) blocks was dependent on the diblock copolymer composition upon first heating. The static contact angle decreased sharply with increasing PEO content in the diblock copolymers. Compared with poly(TMC), poly(TMC)‐b‐PEO had a higher Young's modulus and lower elongation at break. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 4819–4827, 2005  相似文献

Novel and well‐defined dendrimer‐star, block‐comb polymers were successfully achieved by the combination of living ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization on the basis of a dendrimer polyester. Star‐shaped dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s were synthesized by the bulk polymerization of ?‐caprolactone with a dendrimer initiator and tin 2‐ethylhexanoate as a catalyst. The molecular weights of the dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s increased linearly with an increase in the monomer. The dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s were converted into macroinitiators via esterification with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide. The star‐block copolymer dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was obtained by the atom transfer radical polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The molecular weights of these copolymers were adjusted by the variation of the monomer conversion. Then, dendrimer‐star, block‐comb copolymers were prepared with poly(L ‐lactide) blocks grafted from poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) blocks by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. The unique and well‐defined structure of these copolymers presented thermal properties that were different from those of linear poly(?‐caprolactone). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers mPEG‐b‐P(DTC‐ADTC‐g‐Pal) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of 2,2‐dimethyltrimethylene carbonate (DTC) and 2,2‐bis(azidomethyl)trimethylene carbonate (ADTC) with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (mPEG) as an initiator, followed by the click reaction of propargyl palmitate and the pendant azido groups on the polymer chains. Stable micelle solutions of the amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers could be prepared by adding water to a THF solution of the polymer followed by the removal of the organic solvent by dialysis. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that the micelles had a narrow size distribution. Transmission electron microscopy images displayed that the micelles were in spherical shape. The grafted structure could enhance the interaction of polymer chains with drug molecules and improve the drug‐loading capacity and entrapment efficiency. Further, the amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers mPEG‐b‐P(DTC‐ADTC‐g‐Pal) were low cytotoxic and had more sustained drug release behavior. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pseudo block and triblock copolymers were synthesized by the cationic ring‐opening copolymerization of 1,5,7,11‐tetraoxaspiro[5.5]undecane (SOC1) with trimethylene oxide (OX) via one‐shot and two‐shot procedures, respectively. When SOC1 and OX were copolymerized cationically with boron trifluoride etherate (BF3OEt2) as an initiator in CH2Cl2 at 25 °C, OX was consumed faster than SOC1. SOC1 was polymerized from the OX‐rich gradient copolymer produced in the initial stage of the copolymerization to afford the corresponding pseudo block copolymer, poly [(OX‐grad‐SOC1)‐b‐SOC1]. We also succeeded in the synthesis of a pseudo triblock copolymer by the addition of OX during the course of the polymerization of SOC1 before its complete consumption, which provided the corresponding pseudo triblock copolymer, poly[SOC1‐b‐(OX‐grad‐SOC1)‐b‐SOC1]. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined poly(vinyl acetate) macroinitiators, with the chains thus end‐capped by a cobalt complex, were synthesized by cobalt‐mediated radical polymerization and used to initiate styrene polymerization at 30 °C. Although the polymerization of the second block was not controlled, poly(vinyl acetate)‐b‐polystyrene copolymers were successfully prepared and converted into amphiphilic poly(vinyl alcohol)‐b‐polystyrene copolymers by the methanolysis of the ester functions of the poly(vinyl acetate) block. These poly(vinyl alcohol)‐b‐polystyrene copolymers self‐associated in water with the formation of nanocups, at least when the poly(vinyl alcohol) content was low enough. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of di‐ and triblock copolymers [poly(L ‐lactide‐b‐ε‐caprolactone), poly(D,L ‐lactide‐b‐ε‐caprolactone), poly(ε‐caprolactone‐b‐L ‐lactide), and poly(ε‐caprolactone‐b‐L ‐lactide‐b‐ε‐caprolactone)] have been synthesized successfully by sequential ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) and lactide (LA) either by initiating PCL block growth with living PLA chain end or vice versa using titanium complexes supported by aminodiol ligands as initiators. Poly(trimethylene carbonate‐b‐ε‐caprolactone) was also prepared. A series of random copolymers with different comonomer composition were also synthesized in solution and bulk of ε‐CL and D,L ‐lactide. The chemical composition and microstructure of the copolymers suggest a random distribution with short average sequence length of both the LA and ε‐CL. Transesterification reactions played a key role in the redistribution of monomer sequence and the chain microstructures. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis of the copolymer also evidenced the random structure of the copolymer with a unique Tg. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nontoxic and biodegradable poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(?‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were synthesized by the solution polymerization of ?‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol). The chemical structure of the resulting triblock copolymer was characterized with 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography. In aqueous solutions of the triblock copolymers, the micellization and sol–gel‐transition behaviors were investigated. The experimental results showed that the unimer‐to‐micelle transition did occur. In a sol–gel‐transition phase diagram obtained by the vial‐tilting method, the boundary curve shifted to the left, and the gel regions expanded with the increasing molecular weight of the poly(?‐caprolactone) block. In addition, the hydrodynamic diameters of the micelles were almost independent of the investigated temperature (25–55 °C). The atomic force microscopy results showed that spherical micelles formed at the copolymer concentration of 2.5 × 10?4 g/mL, whereas necklace‐like and worm‐like shapes were adopted when the concentration was 0.25 g/mL, which was high enough to form a gel. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The copolymerization of N‐phenyl maleimide and p‐chloromethyl styrene via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process with AIBN as initiator and 2‐(ethoxycarbonyl)prop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate as RAFT agent produced copolymers with alternating structure, controlled molecular weights, and narrow molecular weight distributions. Using poly(N‐phenyl maleimide‐altp‐chloromethyl styrene) as the macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine, well‐defined comb‐like polymers with one graft chain for every two monomer units of backbone polymer were obtained. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The H‐shaped copolymers, [poly(L ‐lactide)]2polystyrene [poly(L ‐lactide)]2, [(PLLA)2PSt(PLLA)2] have been synthesized by combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with cationic ring‐opening polymerization (CROP). The first step of the synthesis is ATRP of St using α,α′‐dibromo‐p‐xylene/CuBr/2,2′‐bipyridine as initiating system, and then the PSt with two bromine groups at both chain ends (Br–PSt–Br) were transformed to four terminal hydroxyl groups via the reaction of Br–PSt–Br with diethanolamine in N,N‐dimethylformamide. The H‐shaped copolymers were produced by CROP of LLA, using PSt with four terminal hydroxyl groups as macroinitiator and Sn(Oct)2 as catalyst. The copolymers obtained were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 2794–2801, 2006  相似文献

Bulk free‐radical polymerization of 2‐vinylpyridine (2VP) in the presence of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) was studied under different conditions (temperature and presence of additives). Linear poly‐(2‐vinylpyridine) with a narrow molecular weight distribution and controllable molecular weight was prepared in the presence of acetic anhydride at 95 °C up to a conversion of 66%. At higher conversions side reactions became very important (pseudoliving polymerization). By applying this procedure, well‐defined random copolymers of 2VP with styrene or tert‐butylmethacrylate as well as block copolymers of 2VP with styrene were synthesized. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The emulsion atom transfer radical block copolymerization of 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out with the bifunctional initiator 1,4‐butylene glycol di(2‐bromoisobutyrate). The system was mediated by copper bromide/4,4′‐dinonyl‐2,2′‐bipyridyl and stabilized by polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate. The effects of the initiator concentration and temperature profile on the polymerization kinetics and latex stability were systematically examined. Both EHMA homopolymerization and successive copolymerization with MMA proceeded in a living manner and gave good control over the polymer molecular weights. The polymer molecular weights increased linearly with the monomer conversion with polydispersities lower than 1.2. A low‐temperature prepolymerization step was found to be helpful in stabilizing the latex systems, whereas further polymerization at an elevated temperature ensured high conversion rates. The EHMA polymers were effective as macroinitiators for initiating the block polymerization of MMA. Triblock poly(methyl methacrylate–2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate–methyl methacrylate) samples with various block lengths were synthesized. The MMA and EHMA reactivity ratios determined by a nonlinear least‐square method were ~0.903 and ~0.930, respectively, at 70 °C. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic, biocompatible poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone)‐b‐poly(l ‐lactide) (PVP‐b‐PLLA) block polymers were synthesized at 60 °C using a hydroxyl‐functionalized N,N‐diphenyldithiocarbamate reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, 2‐hydroxyethyl 2‐(N,N‐diphenylcarbamothioylthio)propanoate (HDPCP), as a dual initiator for RAFT polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) in a one‐step procedure. 4‐Dimethylamino pyridine was used as the ROP catalyst for l ‐lactide. The two polymerization reactions proceeded in a controlled manner, but their polymerization rates were affected by the other polymerization process. This one‐step procedure is believed to be the most convenient method for synthesizing PVP‐b‐PLLA block copolymers. HDPCP can also be used for the one‐step synthesis of poly(N‐vinylcarbazole)‐b‐PLLA block copolymers. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2014 , 52, 1607–1613  相似文献

The melt ring‐opening/condensation reaction of trans‐4‐hydroxy‐N‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L‐proline (N‐CBz‐Hpr) with cyclic carbonate [trimethylene carbonate (tri‐MC) or tetramethylene carbonate (tetra‐MC)] at a wide range of molar fractions in the feed produced new degradable poly(ester‐carbonate)s. The influence of reaction conditions such as polymerization time and temperature on the yield and inherent viscosity of the copolymers was investigated. The polymerizations were carried out in bulk at 140 °C with 1.5 wt % stannous octoate as a catalyst for 30 h. The poly(ester‐carbonate)s obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, and Ubbelohde viscometry. The copolymers synthesized exhibited moderate molecular weights with rather narrow molecular weight distributions. The values of the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers depend on the molar fractions of cyclic carbonate. For the poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tri‐MC) system, with a decreased tri‐MC content from 93 to 16 mol %, the Tg increased from ?10 to 60 °C. Similarly, for the poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tetra‐MC) system, when the tetra‐MC content decreased from 80 to 8 mol %, the Tg increased from ?18 to 52 °C. The relationship between the poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tri‐MC) Tg and the compositions was in approximation with the Fox equation. In vitro degradation of these poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tri‐MC)s was evaluated from weight‐loss measurements. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1435–1443, 2003  相似文献

Poly(lactide) (PLA), poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) homopolymers of high molecular weight were prepared using potassium‐based catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature. The chemical structure of the polymers was investigated by 1H and 13C NMR. The physical properties investigated by GPC and DSC for the polymers obtained are similar to those prepared using tin octanoate based catalyst. Using a sequential polymerization procedure, PLA‐b‐PCL, PLA‐b‐PTMC, and PCL‐b‐PTMC diblock copolymers were synthesized and characterized in terms of their composition and physical properties. The formation of diblock copolymers was confirmed by NMR and DSC measurements. In vitro cytotoxicity tests have been carried out using MTS assay and the results show the biocompatibility of these polymers in the presence of the fibroblast cells. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We successfully synthesized poly(l ‐lactide)‐b‐poly (methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers at ambient temperature by combining ultraviolet light‐induced copper‐catalyzed ATRP and organo‐catalyzed ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) in one‐pot. The polymerization processes were carried out by three routes: one‐pot simultaneous ATRP and ROP, one‐pot sequential ATRP followed by ROP, and one‐pot sequential ROP followed by ATRP. The structure of the block copolymers is confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography, which suggests that the polymerization method is facile and attractive for preparing block copolymers. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel class of biomimetic glycopolymer–polypeptide triblock copolymers [poly(L ‐glutamate)–poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyllactoside)–poly(L ‐glutamate)] was synthesized by the sequential atom transfer radical polymerization of a protected lactose‐based glycomonomer and the ring‐opening polymerization of β‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate N‐carboxyanhydride. Gel permeation chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses demonstrated that triblock copolymers with defined architectures, controlled molecular weights, and low polydispersities were successfully obtained. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the triblock copolymers revealed that the α‐helix/β‐sheet ratio increased with the poly(benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) block length. Furthermore, the water‐soluble triblock copolymers self‐assembled into lactose‐installed polymeric aggregates; this was investigated with the hydrophobic dye solubilization method and ultraviolet–visible analysis. Notably, this kind of aggregate may be useful as an artificial polyvalent ligand in the investigation of carbohydrate–protein recognition and for the design of site‐specific drug‐delivery systems. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The chain lengths of PNIPAAm of the graft copolymers were controllable with polymerization reaction time. The chemical structures of the graft copolymers were characterized with FTIR, NMR, and elemental analysis and their amphiphilic characteristics were examined and discussed. A series of new mesomorphic block copolymers composedofdifferentmacroinitiators, including poly(ethylene oxide), polystyrene, and poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐polystyrene, and polymethacrylate with a pendent cyanoterphenyl group were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization. The number‐average molecular weights of the three diblock copolymers, determined by gel permeation chromatography, were 10,254, 9,772, and 15,632 g mol?1, and their polydispersity indices were 1.17, 1.28, and 1.34. The mesomorphic and optical properties of all the block copolymers were investigated, and they possessed a smectic A phase with mesophasic ranges wider than 100 °C. Moreover, X‐ray diffraction patterns provided evidence of the smectic A phase and the corresponding interdigitated packing of all the polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
