The cutoff characteristics of dielectric-filled circular holes embedded in a dispersive plasmonic medium are investigated. Since two distinctive operating modes, surface plasmon polariton and circular waveguide modes, can exist in the slow and fast wave regions, respectively, the cutoff characteristics for each are separately investigated for linear and radial polarizations of the guided fields. As a result, the cutoff wavelengths for the linear and radial polarizations with very small subwavelength hole radii are found to be limited by the plasma resonance wavelength and plasma wavelength, which in turn are dependent and independent, respectively, of the dielectric constant of the dielectric filler material.  相似文献

The propagation characteristics of a circular dielectric waveguide with chiral media filled in the cladding are investigated. The relation between the cutoff frequency and the chiral admittance, the dispersion curves for some modes with different angular mode numbers and the transverse distribution of fields are presented. Some new features different from the ordinary circular dielectric waveguide are resulted. The results show that the cladding chirality may lead to a single-mode operation in the circular dielectric waveguide.  相似文献

We study the properties of electromagnetic waves propagating along the waveguides with a periodic core created by alternating metal and dielectric layers, the so-called quasi-one-dimensional plasmonic crystal waveguides. Such waveguides can be symmetric or asymmetric, depending on the cladding or substrate material properties, as well as on the termination of the periodic structure. We analyze the dispersion characteristics as well as the profiles of the guided modes for several types of waveguide structure.  相似文献

An exact dispersion relation for the guided modes of a four-layer planar structure with an exponential permittivity profile in the main waveguide layer (slab) is derived for the first time on the basis of the wave approach. Periodicity of the mode characteristics as functions of the cladding thickness is established. Helical waveguide, a different type of waveguide structure, has been considered for analysis of modal dispersion characteristics. This paper deals with the study of a new type of annular waveguide, in which the inner cladding is made by the helical windings i.e. sheath helix and the outer cladding is as usual simple step-index cladding. Using vector approach, the general characteristic equation for the proposed waveguide has been derived. The modal dispersion characteristics for the lowest order modes for different pitch angles and thickness are determined and analyzed. We have found that there is an existence of the negative dispersion curve in the helically inner cladded annular circular waveguide. It means that the inner cladding is responsible for the negative dispersion which is generally obtained in a photonic band gap.  相似文献

It has been experimentally demonstrated that a low-loss guided hybrid mode is supported if a metal strip is embedded in a low index polymer layer surrounded by two high index slabs. In this paper, further numerical analyses on the guided hybrid modes are reported to fully elucidate the characteristics of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide. For a one-dimensional slab structure with a metal film of infinite width, simulation results exhibit that low-loss guided hybrid modes are associated with surface plasmon modes and dual dielectric slab modes. The optical properties of the guided modes are improved by increasing the field intensity which is confined into lossless dielectric layers by decreasing the metal film thickness and increasing the refractive index and thickness of the high-index slabs. The finite element method is used to investigate the lateral mode confinement of the optical guided modes by the corresponding metal strip. By reducing the metal film width, the guided modes are confined in the plane transverse to the direction of propagation and the characteristics are significantly improved. The hybrid plasmonic waveguide can be exploited for long-range propagation-based application such as optical interconnection.  相似文献

In this present communication, we introduce a new type of annular optical waveguide whose outer cladding is made of sheath helix. The sheath helix is made up of the dielectric material of lower refractive index than the core materials. Using vector approach, the general characteristic equation for the proposed waveguide has been derived. The modal dispersion characteristics for the lowest-order modes for different pitch angles are determined and analyzed. We observe that there is no effect of pitch angles on dispersion curve nearly up to 89° but drastic change is observed at 90° and above pitch angle. On comparison of helically inner cladded annular circular waveguide, we have found that there is not the existence of the negative dispersion curve and photonic band gap in the helically outer cladded annular circular waveguide. It means only the inner cladding is responsible for the negative dispersion as well as photonic band gap. There is no effect of the outer cladding.  相似文献

The dispersion and excitation characteristics of the guided waves in a rod surrounded by an infinite solid medium (cladding) are investigated. First, the bisection technique is employed to find all the roots of the dispersion function on the basis of theoretical analysis and to obtain the complex phase and group velocity dispersion curves of the guided modes. Second, according to their different dispersion characteristics, the guided modes are divided into two categories: normal modes and Stoneley modes. And it is concluded that the normal modes merely exist in the “hard cladding” model in which the cladding’s shear velocity is larger than the rod’s; while the Stoneley modes in cylindrical interface are highly dispersive and merely exist in the model whose acoustical parameters satisfied the existence condition of the Stoneley waves. Third, the seldom discussed issue, the excitation mechanisms of the guided waves, excited by three source models: symmetric point source, axial and radial force sources, are simulated respectively. Attention is paid on the dominant mode which has better excitation sensitivity and the suitable excitation frequency range. Moreover, the propagation characteristics of the Stoneley modes, ignored in previous references, are analyzed and compared with those of the normal modes.  相似文献

The characteristics of guided modes in circular waveguides of a uniaxial anisotropic chiral core and a cladding filled with anisotropic plasma are presented. The cladding region is assumed to be infinitely extended with an external applied magnetic field oriented along the direction of propagation in the waveguide. The characteristics equation for the modes in this waveguide are obtained. The variations of the propagation properties with the plasma parameters, chiral parameters, and the cyclotron frequency of plasma have been investigated. Particularly, the effects of the chirality and the cyclotron frequency of plasma on the magnitude and orientation of the energy flux of the guided modes for three kinds of uniaxial anisotropic chiral media have been numerically investigated. Comparisons of the computed results of the presented formulations with published results for some special cases confirm the accuracy of the presented analyses.  相似文献

The dispersion relation for the guided modes is obtained analytically, the structures of the guided modes are discussed under three distinct cases. For the cases of the classical motion and the Klein tunneling, the asymmetric structure does not influence the mode structures dramatically compared with that in the symmetric waveguide. But for the mixing case of the former two, the mode structures and the motion characteristics for the electron and the hole exhibit different behaviors at same condition. A novel method to produce a flat-topped laser beam by using a double-clad rectangular waveguide laser with high-index inner cladding is presented. The waveguide dispersion equation for cosine mode was deduced, the condition for the flattened mode was given out, relative gains for guided modes were calculated numerically and analyzed. Results indicate that a gain advantage for the flattened mode is clear, a flat-topped laser beam can be achieved when the optical confinement factor, the gain intensity and the output coupler are chosen suitably.  相似文献

The propagation characteristics of a metal-coated planar waveguide with chiral media filled in the cladding are presented. The effects of chirality on cutoff, dispersion characteristics and field distributions of the waveguide are studied. The results show that cladding chirality brings phase chopping to the transverse electric field component of those modes with odd mode numbers.  相似文献

We investigate guided modes in the asymmetric waveguide structure with a left-handed material (LHM) layer surrounded by air and metal. A graphical method is proposed to determine the guided modes. New properties of the oscillating and surface guided modes, such as absence of the fundamental mode, coexistence of the oscillating and surface guided modes, fast attenuation of the surface guided modes, and mode degeneracy, are analyzed in detail. We also investigate dispersive characteristics of the metal-LHM- air optical waveguide. The propagation constant increases with decreasing slab thickness for the first-order oscillating mode, which is different from that in traditional metal-cladding waveguides.  相似文献

从麦克斯韦方程组出发,结合电磁场的边界条件,推导出介质矩形波导导模的一般色散方程.对普通介质矩形波导和左手介质矩形波导的导模场分布分别进行了数值模拟.通过对比两种介质矩形波导的导模场分布的模拟结果,发现左手介质矩形波导Ex22模的场分布比普通介质波导Ex00模的场更集中在波导中部.同时,根据处理普通介质矩形波导的Marcatili方法.类比得到左手介质矩形波导表面模的色散方程,并数值模拟了低阶模的场分布,结果表明,能量主要集中在波导的四个角区以及波导的边缘.  相似文献

We study the optical modes in a plasmonic waveguide with electrically anisotropic metamaterial and dielectric, including symmetric (anti-symmetric) photonic mode and symmetric (anti-symmetric) plasmonic mode. The dispersion curves for these modes are derived, and a graphical method is used to calculate the solution of symmetric photonic mode and anti-symmetric plasmonic mode. 研究了纤芯为各向同性非均匀材料,而包层为负折射率均匀介质光纤的色散特性.在纤芯满足弱渐变条件的假定下,按矢量场分析法,通过芯层与包层的介电常数比ξ和磁导率比η,讨论了导波模式色散特性对左手介质包层材料的依赖性.分析表明,ξ和 η对轴对称模色散曲线的低频段影响较大,但对非轴对称模影响不大.ξ和 η对导波模式的截止频率没有影响.由于该光纤中的HEm1模的截止频率都等于0,所以不存在理论上的单模区,但仍可近似实现无色散传输.  相似文献

The general eigenequations and the field expressions for circular waveguides containing chiral material in both the core and the cladding are given in a simple formulation. The results indicate that there are two types of field distribution which is related to the operating wavelength and chiral admittance. When the chiral admittance is larger than a critical value, the fields of one kind of circularly polarized wave in the core become exponentially-like damping in the transverse direction. Based on the eigenequations, the characteristics of a circular waveguide with chiral medium filled in the core are investigated. The relation between the cutoff frequency and the chiral admittance, the dispersion curves for some modes with different angular mode number and the transverse distribution of fields are presented.
