It was possible to determine the maximum loading of salicylic acid adsorbed onto γ-alumina and kaolinite clay after exposure to salicylic acid dissolved in hexane by examination using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The maximum surface loading of salicylic acid (which resisted washing with fresh hexane) on γ-alumina was four times that observed using water as a solvent (approximately 3.0 compared with 0.7 molecules/nm2). Washing the sample with water removed the organic which was in excess to the maximum level observed for samples prepared with aqueous solution. The spectra of samples prepared with a loading up to the maximum observed with aqueous solution showed no significant differences to those of samples where the organic had been adsorbed from hexane (with the same surface loading). New peaks were observed for loadings greater than 1 molecules/nm2, but the salicylic acid was still present as carboxylate (with no clear evidence for the carbonyl group). Salicylic acid adsorbed more readily to the surface of kaolinite from solution in hexane than from aqueous solution (up to maximum average loading of 2 molecules/nm2). Washing the samples with water removed the organic to a loading in the region of 0.2 molecules/nm2, independent of the initial loading. Salicylic acid was adsorbed onto kaolinite as the carboxylate. The findings indicate that uptake is mediated by a surface water layer even in the absence of bulk water.  相似文献

Two kinds of nanocrystalline alumina powders, boehmite (gamma-AlOOH, particle size d approximately 10 nm, BET surface area A(BET) = 180-200 m(2) g(-1)) and corundum (alpha-Al(2)O(3), d approximately 400 nm, A(BET) = 7 m(2) g(-1)) were used for comparative investigation by thermogravimetry (TG). The remarkable difference in the dehydration profiles between the two samples gives evidence for a distinct difference in their structures. In the following pyridine adsorption/desorption experiment, gamma-alumina was found to possess much more (20 times) and much stronger acidic sites than corundum. The activation energy of pyridine desorption was obtained from the respective minima in the first derivative of the TG-curves (DTG) at various heating rates (1-20 K min(-1)); the activation energy for pyridine desorption is smaller for gamma-alumina (61.5 kJ mol(-1)) than for corundum (78.8 kJ mol(-1)). Furthermore, the adsorption of water, carbon tetrachloride, and hexane on those alumina specimens provides evidence for the highly hydrophilic nature of their surfaces. The shift of T(max) to higher temperatures upon desorption of water was ascribed to the different adsorption coverage and the different energy required for removal of adsorbed water molecules.  相似文献

Molecular weight (MW) fractionation of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and purified Aldrich humic acid (PAHA) by adsorption onto kaolinite and hematite was investigated in equilibrium and rate experiments with a size-exclusion chromatography system using ultraviolet (UV) light detection. The extent of adsorptive fractionation based on UV detection was positively correlated with the percent carbon adsorption for both humic substances (HS), although the specific fractionation pattern observed depended on the particular HS and mineral used. Higher MW fractions of SRFA, an aquatic HS, were preferentially adsorbed to both kaolinite and hematite whereas the fractionation trends for PAHA, a terrestrial peat HS, differed for the two minerals. The contrasting fractionation patterns for SRFA versus PAHA can be explained reasonably well by the different structural trends that occur in their respective MW fractions and the underlying adsorption processes. Rate studies of adsorptive fractionation revealed an initial rapid uptake of smaller HS molecules by the mineral surfaces, followed by their replacement at the surface by a much slower uptake of the larger HS molecules present in aqueous solution.  相似文献

The interactions of L-alanine with gamma- and alpha-alumina have been investigated by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). L-alanine/alumina samples were dried from aqueous suspensions, at 36.5 degrees C, with two amino acid concentrations (0.4 and 0.8 mmol g-1) and at different pH values (1, 6, and 13). The vibrational spectra proved that the nature of L-alanine interactions with both aluminas is the same (hydrogen bonding), although the groups involved depend on the L-alanine form and on alumina surface groups, both controlled by the pH. For samples prepared at pH 1, cationic L-alanine [CH3CH(NH3+)COOH] displaces physisorbed water from alumina, and strong hydrogen bonds are established between the carbonyl groups of alanine, as electron donors, and the surface Al-OH2+ groups of alumina. This occurs at the expense of alanine dimer dissociation and breaking of intramolecular bonds. When samples are prepared at pH 6, the interacting groups are Al-OH2+ and the carboxylate groups of zwitterionic L-alanine [CH3CH(NH3+)COO-]. The affinity of L-alanine toward alumina decreases, as the strong NH3+...-OOC intermolecular hydrogen bonds prevail over the interactions with alumina. Thus, for a load of 0.8 mmol g-1, phase segregation is observed. On alpha-alumina, crystal deposition is even observed for a load of 0.4 mmol g-1. At pH 13, the carboxylate groups of anionic L-alanine [CH3CH(NH2)COO-] are not affected by alumina. Instead, hydrogen bond interactions occur between NH2 and the Al-OH surface groups of the substrate. Complementary N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms showed that adsorption of L-alanine occurs onto the alumina pore network for samples prepared at pH 1 and 13, whereas at pH 6 the amino acid/alumina interactions are not strong enough to promote adsorption. The mesoporous structure and the high specific surface area of gamma-alumina make it a more efficient substrate for adsorption of L-alanine. For each alumina, however, it is the nature of the specific interactions and not the porosity of the substrate that determines the adsorption process.  相似文献

The uptake of anthracene from dilute aqueous solutions onto goethite and kaolinite was investigated at 25 degrees C, first in the absence and then in the presence of three benzene carboxylic acids: phthalic acid (benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid), trimesic acid (-1,3,5-), and mellitic acid (-1,2,3,4,5,6-). Carboxylic acid concentrations were 0.20, 0.10, and 0.05 mM. Anthracene (0.20 microM) did not adsorb strongly onto the pure mineral surfaces, but in the presence of phthalic acid a substantial increase in anthracene uptake was observed, particularly for the goethite systems. Trimesic and mellitic acids did not enhance anthracene uptake. Phthalate and proton adsorption data have been used to model phthalate adsorption onto the mineral surfaces using an extended constant capacitance surface complexation model. This model was then successfully adapted to account for the observed increase in anthracene uptake, where anthracene molecules were assumed to interact with adsorbed phthalate. We propose that the enhancement of anthracene adsorption in the presence of phthalic acid is due to an increase in the hydrophobicity of the mineral surface once phthalic acid molecules adsorb. The same effect was not observed for the other benzene carboxylates because of their greater polarity.  相似文献

The adsorption of Cd(II) onto goethite, kaolinite, and illite was measured as a function of pH (adsorption edges) and concentration (adsorption isotherms) at 25 degrees C. As the pH was increased, adsorption onto goethite occurred mainly in the pH range 5.5-8, whereas adsorption onto kaolinite occurred in two stages, separated by a plateau in the pH region 5.5 to 7. Adsorption onto illite increased steadily as the pH was increased, with far less Cd(II) adsorbing onto illite than onto goethite or kaolinite per m(2) of mineral surface area. Potentiometric titrations of suspensions of each mineral, with and without Cd(II) present, were also completed. Results from all three types of experiments were modeled using an extended constant- capacitance surface complexation model. The reactions [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] best described Cd(II) adsorption onto goethite, while [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] best described Cd(II) adsorption onto kaolinite. A combination of the first, second, and fourth of these reactions best fitted the data for Cd(II) adsorption onto illite. In each case the model fitted all experimental data well. The results suggest that adsorption onto the variable charge (SOH) sites on illite more closely resembles adsorption onto goethite than onto kaolinite.  相似文献

Stabilization of gamma-alumina suspension for chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) of copper was investigated. Citric acid and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) (M(w)=5000) were used as dispersant. The stability of suspension was evaluated from the changes in viscosity, particle size and zeta potential. It appears that metastable gamma-alumina mainly due to its high specific surface area and to the presence of aluminol groups on its surface is progressively transformed to bayerite (beta-Al(OH)(3)) by hydration procedure. Citric acid molecules were adsorbed onto gamma-alumina surface effectively and exhibited the excellent hydration inhibition effect. Although citrate-alumina surface complexes give barrier to the flocculation, the repulsion potential is based mainly on the electrostatic repulsion, thereby steric hindrance caused by the adsorption of these small molecules is very weak. The electrosteric repulsion, which provides more effective dispersion stability than electrostatic repulsion force, can be expected by using polyelectrolyte such as PAA; however, adsorbed layers of PAA onto solid/liquid interface are loosely formed. Therefore, a large amount of PAA was required to inhibit the surface hydration of gamma-alumina suspension, thereby the excess addition of PAA decreased the electrosteric repulsion and re-bridging of the dispersant between particles caused an increase in suspension viscosity. Therefore, synergistic effect can be expected in mixed dispersant system of citric acid and PAA, since small citric acid molecules are adsorbed faster than PAA, inhibiting the progress of surface hydration, and then adsorbed PAA layers exhibit the effective electrosteric repulsion interaction between particles with a small amount compared with PAA alone. It was revealed that the gamma-alumina slurry dispersed by mixed dispersant exhibited the improved removal rate of Cu layer by CMP polishing test.  相似文献

Hydrophobicity, lubrication and anticorrosion properties of steel substrates have been obtained by a deposition of thin film (i.e. by mechanochemical treatment) at room conditions. Stearic acid and paraffin were chosen as reactive molecules. Different abrasive powders were selected to generate active sites on the treated surfaces for adsorption of the reactive molecules and then, the results were compared. The surfaces were analyzed by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). The results emphasize that, a thick layer of mixed stearic acid/paraffin was deposited onto the metallic surface after the treatment. After hexane rinsing we could only detect a very thin layer of oriented stearic acid molecules chemically adsorbed onto the metallic surface and which engages strong interactions with it. Whereas, RAIRS only provides molecular analysis, the XPS technique was complementary for discriminating the different surfaces. It was possible to show differences in thickness as well as in coverage according to the size and shape of abrasive particles. Furthermore, we could conclude that deposit layer is not uniform. Defects were always present and were dependent on abrasive powders used. Then wettability was assessed as a way to test the homogeneity of thin films generated by the mechanochemical treatment. In agreement with theoretical data, receding contact angle was very dependent on the defects in the deposited film. If holes or aggregates were increased in the deposit layer, the receding contact angle was decreased while advancing contact angles and equilibrium contact angles remained constant. A very important point for technological applications was that the homogeneity of the deposited film was governed by abrasive powder involved in mechanochemical treatment and contact angle values were a direct measurement of the homogeneity of surfaces generated by mechanochemical treatment.  相似文献

The adsorption of citric acid onto goethite, kaolinite, and illite was measured as a function of pH (adsorption edges) and concentration (adsorption isotherms) at 25 degrees C. The greatest adsorption was onto goethite and the least onto illite. Adsorption onto goethite was at a maximum below pH 5 and decreased as the pH was increased to pH 9. For kaolinite, maximum adsorption occurred between pH 4.5 and pH 7, decreasing below and above this pH region, while for illite maximum adsorption occurred between about pH 5 and pH 7, decreasing at both lower and higher pH. ATR-FTIR spectra of citrate adsorbed to goethite at pH 4.6, pH 7.0, and pH 8.8 were compared with those of citrate solutions between pH 3.5 and pH 9.1. While the spectra of adsorbed citrate resembled those of the fully deprotonated solution species, there were significant differences. In particular the C[bond]O symmetric stretching band of the adsorbed species at pH 4.6 and 7.0 changed shape and was shifted to higher wave number. Further spectral analysis suggested that citrate adsorbed as an inner-sphere complex at pH 4.6 and pH 7.0 with coordination to the surface most probably via one or more carboxyl groups. At pH 8.8 the intensity of the adsorbed bands was much smaller but their shape was similar to those from the deprotonated citrate solution species, suggesting outer-sphere adsorption. Insufficient citric acid adsorbed onto illite or kaolinite to provide spectroscopic information about the mode of adsorption onto these minerals. Data from adsorption experiments, and from potentiometric titrations of suspensions of the minerals in the presence of citric acid, were fitted by extended constant-capacitance surface complexation models. On the goethite surface a monodentate inner-sphere complex dominated adsorption below pH 7.9, with a bidentate outer-sphere complex required at higher pH values. On kaolinite, citric acid adsorption was modeled with a bidentate outer-sphere complex at low pH and a monodentate outer-sphere complex at higher pH. There is evidence of dissolution of kaolinite in the presence of citric acid. For illite two bidentate outer-sphere complexes provided a good fit to all data.  相似文献

The adsorption of cadmium onto kaolinite and Muloorina illite in the presence of citric acid has been measured as a function of pH and cadmium concentration at 25 degrees C. When citric acid is present in the systems cadmium adsorption is slightly enhanced below pH 5, but significantly suppressed between pH 5 and 8, for both substrates. At higher citric acid concentrations very little cadmium adsorbs onto kaolinite from pH 5 to 8. Above pH 8 adsorption of Cd(II) onto illite is enhanced in the presence of citric acid, especially at lower concentrations, but this does not occur for kaolinite. Adsorption and potentiometric titration data were fitted by simple extended constant-capacitance surface complexation models for the two substrates. Enhancement of adsorption at lower pH values was ascribed to the ternary reaction [X(-)--K(+)](0)+Cd(2+)+L(3-)+2H(+) right arrow over left arrow (0)+K(+) involving outer-sphere complexation with permanently charged X(-) sites on the "silica" faces of both clay minerals. The models suggested that suppression of adsorption in the intermediate pH range was due to the formation of a strong CdL(-) solution complex which adsorbed neither on the permanently charged sites nor on the surface hydroxyl groups at the edges of the clay crystals. At higher pH values the dominant solution complex, CdLOH(2-), apparently adsorbed as an outer-sphere complex at surface hydroxyl groups on illite, SOH+2Cd(2+)+L(3-) right arrow over left arrow [SOCd(+)--CdOHL(2-)](-)+2H(+), but not on kaolinite. This difference in behavior results from the presence of =FeOH groups on the illite surface which can form surface complexes with CdLOH(2-), while the =AlOH groups on the kaolinite surface cannot.  相似文献

In situ infrared spectroscopy has been used to investigate the adsorption of a range of simple aromatic carboxylic acids from aqueous solution to metal oxides. Thin films of TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Ta2O5 were prepared by evaporation of aqueous sols on single reflection ZnSe prisms. Benzoic acid adsorbed very strongly to ZrO2, in a bridging bidentate fashion, but showed only weak adsorption to TiO2 and Ta2O5. Substituted aromatic carboxylic acids; salicylic, phthalic and thiosalicylic, were found to adsorb to each metal oxide. Salicylic and phthalic acids adsorbed to the metal oxides via bidentate interactions, involving coordination through both carboxylate and substituent groups. Thiosalicylic acid adsorbed to the metal oxides as a bridging bidentate carboxylate with no coordination through the thiol substituent group.  相似文献

The adsorption of L-lysine on a Cu(110) surface has been investigated under UHV conditions from the sublimation of a crystalline phase. The adsorption was characterized by Fourier transform reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (FT-RAIRS) during exposure and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). At room temperature, the lysine molecules' adsorption geometry varies as a function of the exposure. At low coverage, the molecules are adsorbed via the oxygen atoms of the deprotonated carboxylate group and the nitrogen atom of the amino group. At high coverage, close to the monolayer, the molecules reorient to be anchored to the surface via one oxygen of a sideways-tilted carboxylate moiety. This first step is followed by the growth of multilayers of nonoriented molecules. In contrast, adsorption on an oxygen-modified copper surface leads to a rather disordered layer. The results are compared with the adsorption carried out on a polycrystalline copper surface after immersion in solutions of lysine at various pH values. The adsorption was monitored by polarization modulation infrared spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). The chemistry of the adsorbed molecules is function of the starting chemical form of the lysine molecules imposed by the pH of the solution. The combination of the two techniques and various sets of adsorption conditions will give important insight into the adsorption of biomolecules on metal surfaces and the influence of water and surface oxygen.  相似文献

Single and binary adsorption behaviors of salicylic acid and 5-sulfosalicylic acid onto hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbents, i.e. NDA-101 and NDA-99 were investigated. The Freundlich model can successfully describe all the adsorption isotherms tested, which indicates a favorable and exothermic adsorption process. The adsorption of salicylic acid relies on π-π interaction, while the electrostatic interaction further influences the adsorption of 5-sulfosalicylic acid onto NDA-99. The adsorptive capacity of salicylic acid on NDA-99 decreases but increases on NDA-101 with 5-sulfosalicylic acid as the background component in a binary solute system. The amount of 5-sulfosalicylic acid adsorbed was decreased with the increase in initial concentration of salicylic acid on both adsorbents. The competition for the adsorption sites is considered to be predominant in the solid-to-liquid interaction process. The adsorption selectivity of salicylic acid onto NDA-101 is higher than onto NDA-99 by more than an order of magnitude. Thus, combination technique involving NDA-101 followed by NDA-99 can be effectively applied to separate and recover salicylic acid and 5-sulfosalicylic acid from wastewater.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of phenol has been studied using palladium supported on gamma-alumina (10% Pd-Al2O3) catalysts. The catalyst powders were suspended in aqueous supporting electrolyte solutions containing methanol and short-chain aliphatic acids (acetic acid, propionic acid, or butyric acid) and were dynamically circulated through a reticulated vitreous carbon cathode. The efficiency of the hydrogenation process was measured as a function of the total electrolytic charge and was compared for different types of supporting electrolyte and for various solvent compositions. Our results show that these experimental parameters strongly affect the overall ECH efficiency of phenol. The ECH efficiency and yields vary inversely with the quantity of methanol present in the electrolytic solutions, whereas the presence of aliphatic carboxylic acids increased the ECH efficiency in proportion to the chain length of the specific acids employed. In all cases, ECH efficiency was directly correlated with the adsorption properties of phenol onto the Pd-alumina catalyst in the studied electrolyte solution, as measured independently using dynamic adsorption isotherms. It is shown that the alumina surface binds the aliphatic acids via the carboxylate terminations and transforms the catalyst into an organically functionalized material. Temperature-programmed mass spectrometry analysis and diffuse-reflectance infrared spectroscopy measurements confirm that the organic acids are stably bound to the alumina surface below 200 degrees C, with coverages that are independent of the acid chain length. These reproducibly functionalized alumina surfaces control the adsorption/desorption equilibrium of the target phenol molecules and allow us to prepare new electrocatalytic materials to enhance the efficiency of the ECH process. The in situ grafting of specific aliphatic acids on general purpose Pd-alumina catalysts offers a new and flexible mechanism to control the ECH process to enhance the selectivity, efficiency, and yields according to the properties of the specific target molecule.  相似文献

We report in situ spectroscopic measurements monitoring the adsorption of a series of carboxylate surfactants onto the surface of the semisoluble, ionic solid fluorite (CaF2). We employ the surface-specific technique, vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy (VSFS), to examine the effect that surfactant adsorption has on the bonding interactions and orientation of interfacial water molecules through the alteration of the electric properties in the interfacial region. In addition, we report on the chain length and headgroup dependence of the formation of hydrophobic self-assembled monolayers on the surface of the solid phase. Differences in chain length and headgroup functionality lead to large changes in the adsorption behavior and structuring of the monolayers formed and the interactions of interfacial water molecules with these monolayers. Fundamental studies such as these are essential for understanding the mechanisms involved in the surfactant adsorption process, information that is important for industrially relevant processes such as mineral ore flotation, waste processing, and petroleum recovery.  相似文献

A study has been carried out of the adsorption of benzoic acid from cyclohexane solution onto the hydrophilic surface of calcite.

We determined initially the chemical and mineral composition of the solid, its specific surface area and its granulometry. This was followed by the determination of the enthalpies of immersion of calcite in different solvents. These thermodynamic properties gave information on the energetics of calcite—solvent interactions. In this way, we could construct a scale of affinities of the different organic molecules and water for the calcite surface. It was noted that the enthalpies were higher in unsaturated than in saturated organic solvents, and higher in water than in the organic solvents.

The adsorption isotherms and the differential molar enthalpies of displacement were determined in the presence and the absence of water. The role played by water in the adsorption of polar organic molecules from the oil phase has not been clearly explained previously. In this paper, we indicate how the presence of water can modify the adsorption of aromatic compounds on the surface of calcite. As regards the adsorption isotherms, the presence of water essentially increases the amount of adsorption. The results of the calorimetric studies were found to be surprising; we observed that the differential molar enthalpies of displacement were endothermic.

Similar experiments were carried out with dolomite and n-heptane solution and the results compared with those obtained with calcite and cyclohexane, leading to the formulation of a general model concerning the adsorption of small polar organic molecules from organic solvents onto the surfaces of the carbonates.

The transport of aromatic carboxylate compounds in the environment can be strongly influenced by adsorption onto certain minerals, such as iron oxides and hydroxides, found in ground water and soils. Batch experiments with five iron oxides were conducted to quantify the contributions to adsorption from different iron mineral surfaces and compare adsorption characteristics of selected organic acids (gentisic acid (GA) and 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA)). Because of their widespread abundance in soils and sediments, goethite, lepidocrocite, ferrihydrite, hematite, and magnetite were investigated. Sorption of two organic acids onto iron oxides was examined over a wide range of conditions (pH, ionic strength, and sorbate concentration). Specific surface area and mineral surface charge proved be important for the adsorption of these compounds. The sorption isotherm was described well by the Tempkin equation for both organic acids, with the adsorption constant higher for HNA than GA. For modeling the sorption edges of ferrihydrite and hematite, surface reactions involving the formation of mononuclear (1:1) surface species were proposed. These results indicate that the generalized two-layer model, with the assumption of homogeneous surface sites, could predict sorption on iron oxides over a range of pH conditions. The results of this study suggest that the mineralogy of the iron oxides and the pH value should be considered when predicting sorption of aromatic acids onto iron oxides and their fate in the soil and the environment.
