Stability analysis of double-diffusive convection for viscoelastic fluid with Soret effect in a porous medium is investigated using a modified-Maxwell-Darcy model. We use the linear stability analysis to investigate how the Soret parameter and the relaxation time of viscoelastic fluid effect the onset of convection and the selection of an unstable wavenumber. It is found that the Soret effect is to destabilize the system for oscillatory convection. The relaxation time also enhances the instability of the system. The effects of Soret coefficient and relaxation time on the heat transfer rate in a porous medium are studied using the nonlinear stability analysis, the variation of the Nusselt number with respect to the Rayleigh number is derived for stationary and oscillatory convection modes. Some previous results can be reduced as the special cases of the present paper.  相似文献

Both linear and weakly nonlinear stability analyses are performed to study thermal convection in a rotating couple-stress fluid-saturated rigid porous layer. In the case of linear stability analysis, conditions for the occurrence of possible bifurcations are obtained. It is shown that Hopf bifurcation is possible due to Coriolis force, and it occurs at a lower value of the Rayleigh number at which the simple bifurcation occurs. In contrast to the nonrotating case, it is found that the couple-stress parameter plays a dual role in deciding the stability characteristics of the system, depending on the strength of rotation. Nonlinear stability analysis is carried out by constructing a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations using truncated representation of Fourier series. Sub-critical finite amplitude steady motions occur depending on the choice of physical parameters but at higher rotation rates oscillatory convection is found to be the preferred mode of instability. Besides, the stability of steady bifurcating equilibrium solution is discussed using modified perturbation theory. Heat transfer is calculated in terms of Nusselt number. Also, the transient behavior of the Nusselt number is investigated by solving the nonlinear differential equations numerically using the Runge–Kutta–Gill method. It is noted that increase in the value of Taylor number and the couple-stress parameter is to dampen the oscillations of Nusselt number and thereby to decrease the heat transfer.  相似文献

The linear and nonlinear stability of double diffusive convection in a layer of couple stress fluid–saturated porous medium is theoretically investigated in this work. Applying the linear stability theory, the criterion for the onset of steady and oscillatory convection is obtained. Emphasizing the presence of couple stresses, it is shown that their effect is to delay the onset of convection and oscillatory convection always occurs at a lower value of the Rayleigh number at which steady convection sets in. The nonlinear stability analysis is carried out by constructing a system of nonlinear autonomous ordinary differential equations using a truncated representation of Fourier series method and also employing modified perturbation theory with the help of self-adjoint operator technique. The results obtained from these two methods are found to complement each other. Besides, heat and mass transport are calculated in terms of Nusselt numbers. In addition, the transient behavior of Nusselt numbers is analyzed by solving the nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations numerically using the Runge–Kutta–Gill method. Streamlines, isotherms, and isohalines are also displayed.  相似文献

The double diffusive convection in a horizontal couple stress fluid saturated anisotropic porous layer, which is heated and salted from below, is studied analytically. The modified Darcy equation that includes the time derivative term is used to model the momentum equation. The critical Rayleigh number, wavenumber for stationary and oscillatory modes, and frequency of oscillations are obtained analytically using linear theory. The effect of anisotropy parameter, solute Rayleigh number, Lewis number, couple stress parameter, and Vadasz number on the stationary, oscillatory, and finite amplitude convection is shown graphically. It is found that the thermal anisotropy parameter, couple stress parameter, and solute Rayleigh number have stabilizing effect on the stationary, oscillatory, and finite amplitude convection. The mechanical anisotropy parameter has destabilizing effect on stationary, oscillatory, and finite amplitude convection. The Lewis number has stabilizing effect in the case of stationary and finite amplitude modes, with dual effect in the case of oscillatory convection. Vadasz number advances the onset of oscillatory convection. The heat and mass transfer decrease with an increase in the values of couple stress parameter, while both increase with an increase in the value of solute Rayleigh number and mechanical anisotropy parameter. The thermal anisotropy parameter and Lewis number have contrasting effect on the heat mass transfer.  相似文献

The onset of double diffusive convection in a two component couple stress fluid layer with Soret and Dufour effects has been studied using both linear and non-linear stability analysis. The linear theory depends on normal mode technique and non-linear analysis depends on a minimal representation of double Fourier series. The effect of couple stress parameter, the Soret and Dufour parameters, and the Prandtl number on the stationary and oscillatory convection are presented graphically. The Dufour parameter enhances the stability of the couple stress fluid system in case of both stationary and oscillatory mode. The effect of positive Soret parameter is to destabilize the system in case of stationary mode while it stabilizes the system in case of oscillatory mode. The negative Soret parameter enhances the stability in both stationary and oscillatory mode. The couple stress parameter enhances the stability of the system in both stationary and oscillatory modes. The Dufour parameter increases the heat transfer while the couple stress parameter has reverse effect. The Soret parameter has negligible influence on heat transfer. Both Dufour and Soret parameters increases the mass transfer while the couple stress parameter has dual effect depending on the value of the Rayleigh number.  相似文献

A non-autonomous complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) for the finite amplitude of convection is derived, and a method is presented here to determine the amplitude of this convection with a weakly nonlinear thermal instability for an oscillatory mode under throughflow and gravity modulation. Only infinitesimal disturbances are considered. The disturbances in velocity, temperature, and solutal fields are treated by a perturbation expansion in powers of the amplitude of the applied gravity field. Throughflow can stabilize or destabilize the system for stress free and isothermal boundary conditions. The Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are obtained numerically to present the results of heat and mass transfer. It is found that throughflow and gravity modulation can be used alternately to heat and mass transfer. Further, oscillatory flow, rather than stationary flow, enhances heat and mass transfer.  相似文献

The stability analysis of the quiescent state in a Maxwell fluid-saturated densely packed porous medium subject to vertical concentration and temperature gradients is presented. A single phase model with local thermal equilibrium between the porous matrix and the Maxwell fluid is assumed. The critical Darcy–Rayleigh numbers and the corresponding wave numbers for the onset of stationary and oscillatory convection are determined. A Lorenz like system is obtained for weakly nonlinear stability analysis.  相似文献

The onset of double diffusive convection in a viscoelastic fluid layer is studied using a linear and a weak nonlinear stability analyses. The onset criterion for stationary, oscillatory and finite amplitude convection is derived analytically. There is a competition between the processes of thermal diffusion, solute diffusion and viscoelasticity that causes the convection to set in through oscillatory mode rather than stationary. The effect of Deborah number, retardation parameter, solutal Rayleigh number, Prandtl number, Lewis number on the stability of the system is investigated. It is shown that the critical frequency increases with Deborah number and solutal Rayleigh number while it decreases with retardation parameter and Lewis number. The nonlinear theory based on the truncated representation of Fourier series method is used to find the heat and mass transfers. The transient behaviour of the Nusselt number and Sherwood number is investigated by solving the finite amplitude equations using Runge-Kutta method. The effect of viscoelastic parameters on heat and mass transfer is brought out.  相似文献

The triple diffusive convection in an Oldroyd-B fluid-saturated porous layer is investigated by performing linear and weakly nonlinear stability analyses. The condition for the onset of stationary and oscillatory is derived analytically. Contrary to the observed phenomenon in Newtonian fluids, the presence of viscoelasticity of the fluid is to degenerate the quasiperiodic bifurcation from the steady quiescent state. Under certain conditions, it is found that disconnected closed convex oscillatory neutral curves occur, indicating the requirement of three critical values of the thermal Darcy-Rayleigh number to identify the linear instability criteria instead of the usual single value, which is a novel result enunciated from the present study for an Oldroyd-B fluid saturating a porous medium. The similarities and differences of linear instability characteristics of Oldroyd-B, Maxwell, and Newtonian fluids are also highlighted. The stability of oscillatory finite amplitude convection is discussed by deriving a cubic Landau equation, and the convective heat and mass transfer are analyzed for different values of physical parameters.  相似文献

The double-diffusive convection in a horizontal fluid-saturated porous layer, which is heated and salted from below in the presence of Soret and Dufour effects, is studied analytically using both linear and nonlinear stability analyses. The linear analysis is based on the usual normal mode technique, while the nonlinear analysis is based on truncated representation of Fourier series. The generalized Darcy model that includes the time derivative is employed for the momentum equation. The critical Rayleigh number, wavenumber for stationary and oscillatory modes, and frequency of oscillations are obtained analytically using linear theory. The effects of solute Rayleigh number, Lewis number, normalized porosity parameter, Vadasz number, Soret and Dufour parameters on the stationary, oscillatory convection, and heat and mass transfers are shown graphically. The Vadasz number has dual effect on the threshold of the oscillatory convection. Some known results are recovered as special cases of the present problem.  相似文献

The onset of Darcy–Brinkman double-diffusive convection in a binary viscoelastic fluid-saturated porous layer is studied using both linear and weakly nonlinear stability analyses. The Oldroyd-B model is employed to describe the rheological behavior of the fluid. An extended form of Darcy–Oldroyd law incorporating the Brinkman’s correction and time derivative is used to describe the fluid flow and the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation is invoked. The onset criterion for stationary and oscillatory convection is derived analytically. The effects of rheological parameters, Darcy number, normalized porosity, Lewis number, solute Rayleigh number, and Darcy–Prandtl number on the stability of the system is investigated. The results indicated that there is a competition among the processes of thermal, solute diffusions and viscoelasticity that causes the convection to set in through the oscillatory modes rather than the stationary. The Darcy–Prandtl number has a dual effect on the threshold of oscillatory convection. The nonlinear theory based on the method of truncated representation of Fourier series is used to find the transient heat and mass transfer. Some existing results are reproduced as the particular cases of present study.  相似文献

Wavy downflow of viscous fluid films is studied. The full Navier-Stokes equations are used to calculate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the flow. The stability of calculated nonlinear waves to arbitrary two-dimensional perturbations is considered within the framework of the Floquet theory. It is shown that, for small values of the Kapitza number, the waves are stable over a wide range of wavelengths and values of the Reynolds number. It is found that, as the Kapitza number increases, the parameter range where nonlinear waves are calculated is divided into a series of alternating zones of stable and unstable solutions. A large number of narrow zones where the solutions are stable are revealed on the wavelength-Reynolds number parameter plane for large values of the Kapitza number. Optimal regimes of film downflow that correspond to the minimum value of average film thickness for nonlinear waves with different wavelengths are determined. The basic characteristics of these waves are calculated in a wide range of Reynolds and Kapitza numbers.  相似文献

In an inhomogeneously heated weakly conductive liquid (electrical conductivity 10–12–1 cm–1) located in a constant electric field a volume charge is induced because of thermal inhomogeneity of electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity. The ponderomotive forces which develop set the liquid into intense motion [1–6]. However, under certain conditions equilibrium proves possible, and in that case the question of its stability may be considered. A theoretical analysis of liquid equilibrium stability in a planar horizontal condenser was performed in [2, 4]. Critical problem parameters were found for the case where Archimedean forces are absent [2]. Charge perturbation relaxation was considered instantaneous. It was shown that instability is of an oscillatory character. In [4] only heating from above was considered. Basic results were obtained in the limiting case of disappearingly small thermal diffusivity in the liquid (infinitely high Prandtl numbers). In the present study a more general formulation will be used to examine convective stability of equilibrium of a vertical liquid layer heated from above or below and located in an electric field. For the case of a layer with free thermally insulated boundaries, an exact solution is obtained. Values of critical Rayleigh number and neutral oscillation frequency for heating from above and below are found Neutral curves are constructed. It is demonstrated that with heating from below instability of both the oscillatory and monotonic types is possible, while with heating from above the instability has an oscillatory character. Values are found for the dimensionless field parameter at which the form of instability changes for heating from below and at which instability becomes possible for heating from above.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 16–23, September–October, 1976.In conclusion, the author thanks E. The stability of infinitestimal steady and oscillatory motions and finite amplitude steady motions of a conducting fluid through porous media with free boundaries which is heated from below and cooled from above is investigated in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Infinitesimal steady motions are investigated using Liapunov method and its is shown that the principle of exchange of stability is valid only when Pm/Pr≤1 with a restricted value of the Hartmann number. It is shown that overstable motions are due to the zonal current induced by the magnetic field. Finite amplitude steady motions are investigated using Veronis [1] analysis and it is shown that for a restricted range of Hartmann numbers and porous parameter Pl, steady finite-amplitude motions can exist for values of the Rayleigh number smaller than that value corresponding to oscillatory motions. Since the Busse number is greater than the wave number the horizontal scale of the steady finite-amplitude motions is larger than that of the overstable motions.  相似文献

The linear and weakly nonlinear thermal convection in a rotating porous layer is investigated by constructing a simplified model involving a system of fifth-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The flow in the porous medium is described by Lap wood-Brinkman-extended Darcy model with fluid viscosity different from effective viscosity. Conditions for the occurrence of possible bifurcations are obtained. It is established that Hopf bifurcation is possible only at a lower value of the Rayleigh number than that of simple bifurcation. In contrast to the non-rotating case, it is found that the ratio of viscosities as well as the Darcy number plays a dual role on the steady onset and some important observations are made on the stability characteristics of the system. The results obtained from weakly nonlinear theory reveal that, the steady bifurcating solution may be either sub-critical or supercritical depending on the choice of physical parameters. Heat transfer is calculated in terms of Nusselt number.  相似文献

The nonlinear stability of thermal convection in a layer of an Oldroyd-B fluid-saturated Darcy porous medium with anisotropic permeability and thermal diffusivity is investigated with the perturbation method. A modified Darcy-Oldroyd model is used to describe the flow in a layer of an anisotropic porous medium. The results of the linear instability theory are delineated. The thresholds for the stationary and oscillatory convection boundaries are established, and the crossover boundary between them is demarcated by identifying a codimension-two point in the viscoelastic parameter plane. The stability of the stationary and oscillatory bifurcating solutions is analyzed by deriving the cubic Landau equations. It shows that these solutions always bifurcate supercritically. The heat transfer is estimated in terms of the Nusselt number for the stationary and oscillatory modes. The result shows that, when the ratio of the thermal to mechanical anisotropy parameters increases, the heat transfer decreases.  相似文献

Linear and nonlinear stability analysis for the onset of convection in a horizontal layer of a porous medium saturated by a nanofluid is studied. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. The modified Darcy equation that includes the time derivative term is used to model the momentum equation. In conjunction with the Brownian motion, the nanoparticle fraction becomes stratified, hence the viscosity and the conductivity are stratified. The nanofluid is assumed to be diluted and this enables the porous medium to be treated as a weakly heterogeneous medium with variation, in the vertical direction, of conductivity and viscosity. The critical Rayleigh number, wave number for stationary and oscillatory mode and frequency of oscillations are obtained analytically using linear theory and the non-linear analysis is made with minimal representation of the truncated Fourier series analysis involving only two terms. The effect of various parameters on the stationary and oscillatory convection is shown pictorially. We also study the effect of time on transient Nusselt number and Sherwood number which is found to be oscillatory when time is small. However, when time becomes very large both the transient Nusselt value and Sherwood value approaches to their steady state values.  相似文献

A comparison among three weakly nonlinear approaches for thermo‐gravitational instability in a Newtonian fluid layer heated from below is presented. First, the dynamical systems describing the time evolution of the problem from different weakly nonlinear approaches, namely, the Lorenz model, the amplitude equations and the perturbation expansion approaches are obtained. Next, the steady states and their stability, as well as the transient behaviour are obtained from each dynamical system. The similarity and difference among the three models are emphasized. The role of each of the nondimensional groups, the Rayleigh number and the Prandtl number is compared for the three models. The different approaches lead to similar behaviours when the Rayleigh number is just above its critical value and Prandtl number is high. However, only the dynamical system obtained from the amplitude equations is able to reflect the role of the Prandtl number. On the other hand, the amplitude equations and perturbation expansion techniques are not suitable for predicting the uniform oscillatory behaviour observed frequently in Rayleigh–Bénard convection. The novelty of the current work lies in studying the critical differences in the findings of the three popular approaches to investigate weakly nonlinear thermal convection for the first time. The stability of the rest state of a conducting incompressible fluid forming a horizontal layer with rigid dielectric boundaries heated from below and rotating about a vertical axis, with a vertical magnetic field superimposed, is studied in the Boussinesq approximation. With increase in the Rayleigh number, depending on the relationship between the problem parameters (Taylor, Chandrasekhar and kinematic and magnetic Prandtl numbers), the eigenvalue of the critical mode of the linearization operator may be zero or imaginary, so that the instability of the rest state may be monotonic or oscillatory. The effect of the parameter values on the instability mode is investigated. In particular, the parameter ranges on which the critical eigenvalue is zero or imaginary are found.  相似文献

The morphology of molten polymeric materials is known to be less sensitive to shear than to extensional deformations. However, it is not easy to characterise molten polymeric materials in simple extensional flows due to the large number of experimental difficulties involved. This has led to the effective absence of a structure-preserving, morphology probing technique similar to the ones commonly found in shear, i.e., the equivalent of stress relaxation and oscillatory experiments. It is the aim of the present work to demonstrate the usefulness of a recently developed experimental technique that enables stress relaxation experiments after a step strain in uniaxial extension to be performed. Results are presented for two model melts (polyisobutylene, PIB, of different molecular weights) and for a series of linear low-density polyethylenes, LLDPE, in which the molecular structure (molecular weight, MW, molecular weight distribution, MWD and degree of long chain branching, LCB) is changed systematically. It is shown that, for both types of materials, stress relaxation experiments in extension yield quantitatively correct results and that this technique is more sensitive to differences in molecular structure than oscillatory experiments in shear.  相似文献
