This paper deals with the non-linear response of sandwich curved panels exposed to thermomechanical loadings. The mechanical loads consist of compressive/tensile edge loads, and a lateral pressure while the temperature field is assumed to exhibit a linear variation through the thickness of the panel. Towards obtaining the equations governing the postbuckling response, the Extended Galerkin’s Method is used. The numerical illustrations concern doubly curved, circular cylindrical and as a special case, flat panels, all the edges being simply supported. Moveable and immoveable tangential boundary conditions in the directions normal to the edges are considered and their implications upon the thermomechanical load-carrying capacity are emphasized. Effects of the radii of curvature and of initial geometric imperfections on the load-carrying capacity of sandwich panels are also considered and their influence upon the intensity of the snap-through buckling are discussed. It is shown that in special cases involving the thermomechanical loading and initial geometric imperfection, the snap-through phenomenon can occur also in the case of flat sandwich panels.  相似文献

In this paper, a methodology is developed for the design of a weight-efficient, composite, curved-stiffened panel, loaded in compression well beyond the initial buckling load. A stiffened fuselage panel is designed to satisfy typical design load criteria for the moderately loaded sections of a typical fighter aircraft. Several stiffened panels are fabricated. Some panels are tested to determine experimentally the static strength and the remaining panels are subjected first to severe fatigue loading and then tested statically to determine the effect of fatigue loading on the postbuckling strengh. The experimentally observed behavior is compared with analytical predictions. The weight efficiencies of buckled and unbuckled construction are also compared.  相似文献

Edge-compression fixture for buckling studies of corrugated board panels   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A test fixture, developed for evaluating the preand postbuckling response of simply supported, nearly flat, rectangular corrugated board panels subjected to edge compression is evaluated. The test fixture enables loading of panels into the postbuckling regime until collapse. The shadowmoiré method verified that buckling in the first mode occurred, and that there was symmetry of the adge-boundary conditions. Through an iterative regression model, experimental curves of load versus out-of-plane displacement for isotropic panels were fitted to an equation governing the nonlinear postbuckling response. This method provides the critical buckling load, a postbuckling parameter and the amplitude of initial imperfection of the panel. Comparison with analytical results revealed that simply supported boundary conditions were closely achieved. Examination of compressively loaded corrugated board panels showed that collapse occurred due to compressive failures of the facings in the highly stressed edge regions without severe influence from stress concentrations at load introduction and edge supports.  相似文献

The initial buckling load of curved panels under compressive loads is substantially reduced by the existence of imperfections, in particular geometric imperfections. It is therefore essential that these imperfections are considered in analysing components which incorporate such panels in order to accurately predict their buckling behaviour. Finite element analysis allows fully non-linear analysis of shells containing geometric imperfections, however, to obtain accurate results information is required on the exact size and shape of the imperfection to be modelled. In most cases this data is not available. It is therefore generally recommended that the imperfections are modelled on the first eigenmode and have an amplitude selected according to the manufacturing procedure. This paper presents the effects of varying imperfection shape and amplitude on the buckling and postbuckling behaviour of one specific case, a curved panel under combined shear and compression, to test the accuracy of such recommendations.  相似文献

The new plastic (elastoplastic) constitutive equation with vertex effect which was proposed and developed in the previous papers is applied to prediction of the forming limit strains of metal sheets which are subjected to various nonproportional loading without unloading and to proportional loading after another proportional loading with or without unloading. It is demonstrated that the constitutive equation is very effective, that appropriately curved strain-paths give much larger limiting strains than the corresponding straight paths do, that abrupt change in stress- or strain-path very often induces a catastrophic breakage at the instant of the path-change, and that very useful secondary FLDs (forming limit diagrams) can be drawn.  相似文献

Compressive strength of edge-loaded corrugated board panels   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Postbuckling strength of simply supported corrugated board panels subjected to edge compressive loading has been studied experimentally using a specially developed test fixture. Although the load versus out-of-plane displacement response was highly sensitive to the presence of initial imperfections in the panels, the collapse loads did not vary much, which is attributed to the stable postbuckling behavior of the plates. Thin plates collapsed at nearly twice the buckling load, while thick panels collapsed at loads below the elastic critical buckling load. Local buckling of the facing on the concave side of the buckled plate was observed at load levels close to the collapse load. The plate collapse was triggered by compressive failure of the facings that initiated at the unloaded edges. A simplified design analysis was derived based on approximate postbuckling analysis and compared with an existing design formula for corrugated board panels and boxes.  相似文献

The effect of local geometric imperfections on the buckling and postbuckling of composite laminated cylindrical shells subjected to combined axial compression and uniform temperature loading was investigated. The two cases of compressive postbuckling of initially heated shells and of thermal postbuckling of initially compressed shells are considered. The formulations are based on a boundary layer theory of shell buckling, which includes the effects of the nonlinear prebuckling deformation, the nonlinear large deflection in the postbuckling range and the initial geometric imperfection of the shell. The analysis uses a singular perturbation technique to determine buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples are presented that relate to the performances of cross-ply laminated cylindrical shells with or without initial local imperfections, from which results for isotropic cylindrical shells follow as a limiting case. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form for different parameters and loading conditions.  相似文献

In the present paper, an advanced geometrically nonlinear shell theory of doubly curved structural sandwich panels with transversely compressible core is presented. The model is based on the adoption of the Kirchhoff theory for the face sheets and a second/third order power series expansion for the core displacements. The theory accounts for dynamic effects as well as for initial geometric imperfections. In the v. Kármán sense, large displacement theory is employed with respect to the transverse direction while the displacement gradients with respect to the tangential directions are assumed to be small. The equations of motion are derived by means of Hamilton’s principle and hold valid for all types of elastic and elastic–plastic material models. The theory is illustrated by an analysis of the elastic buckling and postbuckling behavior of flat and curved sandwich panels using an extended Galerkin scheme. Owing to the assumed transverse flexibility of the core, both the global and the local (face wrinkling) instability modes can be addressed.  相似文献

A thermal postbuckling analysis is presented for a moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to (1) uniform and non-uniform tent-like temperature loading; and (2) combined axial compression and uniform temperature loading. The initial geometrical imperfection of plate is taken into account. The formulations are based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory considering the effects of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. The analysis uses a deflection-type perturbation technique to determine the thermal buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples are presented that relate to the performances of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick rectangular plates and are compared with the results predicted by the thin plate theory.  相似文献

A postbuckling analysis is presented for a functionally graded cylindrical panel of finite length subjected to axial compression in thermal environments. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent, and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The governing equations of a functionally graded cylindrical panel are based on Reddy’s higher order shear deformation shell theory with a von Kármán–Donnell-type of kinematic nonlinearity and including thermal effects. Two cases of the in-plane boundary conditions are considered. The nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the panel are both taken into account. A boundary layer theory of shell buckling, which includes the effects of nonlinear prebuckling deformations, large deflections in the postbuckling range, and initial geometric imperfections of the shell, is extended to the case of functionally graded cylindrical panels under axial compression. A singular perturbation technique is employed to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The numerical illustrations concern the postbuckling behavior of axially loaded, perfect and imperfect, functional graded cylindrical panels with two constituent materials and under different sets of thermal environments. The influences played by temperature rise, volume fraction distributions, the character of in-plane boundary conditions, transverse shear deformation, panel geometric parameters, as well as initial geometric imperfections are studied.  相似文献

The effect of changing strain paths on the forming limit stresses of sheet metals is investigated using the Marciniak–Kuczyński model and a phenomenological plasticity model with non-normality effects [Kuroda, M., Tvergaard, V., 2001. A phenomenological plasticity model with non-normality effects representing observations in crystal plasticity. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 49, 1239–1263]. Forming limits are simulated for linear stress paths and two types of combined loading: a combined loading consisting of two linear stress paths in which unloading is included between the first and second loadings (combined loading A), and combined loading in which the strain path is abruptly changed without unloading (combined loading B). The forming limit stresses calculated for combined loading A agree well with those calculated for the linear stress paths, while the forming limit curves in strain space depend strongly on the strain paths. The forming limit stresses calculated for the combined loading B do not, however, coincide with those calculated for the linear stress paths. The strain-path dependence of the forming limit stress is discussed in detail by observing the strain localization process.  相似文献

In the traditional continuum mechanics, the effects of surface free energy are generally ignored. However, this cannot be the case for nanostructures because of their high surface to volume ratio; surface energy plays an important role in the mechanical responses. In the present study, the nonlinear buckling and postbuckling characteristics of cylindrical nanoshells subjected to combined axial and radial compressions are investigated in the presence of surface energy effects. To this end, Gurtin–Murdoch elasticity theory is implemented into the classical first-order shear deformation shell theory to develop an efficient size-dependent shell model incorporating surface free energy effects. Subsequently, a boundary layer theory is employed including surface effects in conjunction with the nonlinear prebuckling deformations, the large postbuckling deflections and the initial geometric imperfection. Finally, a solution methodology based on a two-stepped singular perturbation technique is utilized to obtain the size-dependent critical buckling loads and equilibrium postbuckling paths corresponding to the both axial dominated and radial dominated loading cases. It is observed that for the both axial dominated and radial dominated loading cases, surface free energy effects cause to increase the both critical buckling load and critical end-shortening of shear deformable nanoshell made of silicon.  相似文献

Results are presented on the evolution of subsequent yield surfaces with finite deformation in a very high work hardening annealed 1100 aluminum alloy. In Part I [Khan, A.S., Kazmi, R., Stoughton, T., Pandey, A., 2009a. Evolution of subsequent yield surfaces and elastic constants with finite plastic deformation. Part 1: a very low work hardening aluminum alloy (Al-6061–T6511) 25, 1611–1625.] of this paper, similar results are presented for a very low work hardening aluminum alloy. Those results were very different from the present ones, and all the results were for proportional loading paths. The subsequent yield surfaces are determined in tension, free end torsion and combined tension–torsion proportional and non-proportional loading paths, using 10 με deviation from linearity definition of yield. Yield surfaces are also determined after linear, bi-linear, and non-linear unloading paths after finite deformation under tension, free end torsion, and combined tension–torsion loading. The initial yield surface is closer to the von-Mises surface and the subsequent yield surfaces show distortion, expansion, positive cross-effect, and “nose” in the loading direction. Additionally, the subsequent yield surfaces after non-proportional loading paths show shrinkage and compounded distortion. The yield surfaces after unloading depict strong anisotropy, positive cross-effect and exhibits different proportion of distortion in each loading conditions. The Young’s and shear modulus decrease with plastic deformation and this decrease is much less than those reported in the published literature.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A postbuckling analysis is presented for a moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to combined axial compression and uniform temperature loading, and resting on a softening nonlinear elastic foundation. The cases of (1) thermal postbuckling of initially compressed plates and (2) compressive post-buckling of initially heated plates are considered. The initial geometrical imperfections of the plates are taken into account. Formulations are based on Reissner-Mindlin plate theory, considering first-order shear deformation effects, and including plate-foundation interaction and thermal effects. The analysis uses a deflection-type perturbation technique to determine buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples include the performance of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick plates resting on softening nonlinear elastic foundations. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form.  相似文献

The postbuckling response of shells is known to exhibit complex phenomena including mode switching and interaction, particularly in the advanced postbuckling range. The existing literature contains many initial postbuckling analyses as well as advanced postbuckling analyses for a single buckling mode, but little work is available on the advanced postbuckling analysis of shells of revolution considering mode switching and interaction. In this paper, a numerical method for the advanced postbuckling analysis of thin shells of revolution subject to torsionless axisymmetric loads is presented, in which such mode switching and interaction are properly captured. Numerical results obtained using the present method for several typical problems not only demonstrate the capability of the method, but also lead to significant observations concerning the postbuckling behavior of thin shells of revolution. In particular, the results show that strong interaction between different harmonic modes may exist and the transition of deformation mode from one to another is gradual. Consequently, the conventional approach of finding the postbuckling path of a shell as the lower festoon curve of postbuckling paths of individual harmonic modes is not valid and is at best a convenient approximation.  相似文献
