The dissociation of OCS has been investigated subsequent to excitation at 248 nm. Speed distributions, speed dependent translational anisotropy parameters, angular momentum alignment, and orientation are reported for the channel leading to S((1)D(2)). In agreement with previous experiments, two product speed regimes have been identified, correlating with differing degrees of rotational excitation in the CO coproducts. The velocity dependence of the translational anisotropy is also shown to be in agreement with previous work. However, contrary to previous interpretations, the speed dependence is shown to primarily reflect the effects of nonaxial recoil and to be consistent with predominant excitation to the 2 (1)A(') electronic state. It is proposed that the associated electronic transition moment is polarized in the molecular plane, at an angle greater than approximately 60 degrees to the initial linear OCS axis. The atomic angular momentum polarization data are interpreted in terms of a simple long-range interaction model to help identify likely surfaces populated during dissociation. Although the model neglects coherence between surfaces, the polarization data are shown to be consistent with the proposed dissociation mechanisms for the two product speed regimes. Large values for the low and high rank in-plane orientation parameters are reported. These are believed to be the first example of a polyatomic system where these effects are found to be of the same order of magnitude as the angular momentum alignment.  相似文献

Equations to enable determination of the helicity (angular momentum orientation) of photofragments resulting from single-photon dissociation of an isotropic sample of molecules are presented. The symmetry of the photofragment distribution is illustrated by three-dimensional vector plots of the expectation values of projections of the fragment total angular momentum. Equations describing circular polarization of light in the spherical tensor basis are presented. Methods for the optical measurement of angular momentum orientation are discussed, including determination of the helicity of circularly polarized light by a quarter-wave plate or single Fresnel rhomb.  相似文献

Polarized laser photolysis, coupled with resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization detection of O(1D2) and velocity-map ion imaging, has been used to investigate the photodissociation dynamics of ozone at 193 nm. The use of multiple pump and probe laser polarization geometries and probe transitions has enabled a comprehensive characterization of the angular momentum polarization of the O(1D2) photofragments, in addition to providing high-resolution information about their speed and angular distributions. Images obtained at the probe laser wavelength of around 205 nm indicate dissociation primarily via the Hartley band, involving absorption to, and diabatic dissociation on, the B 1B2(3 1A1) potential energy surface. Rather different O(1D2) speed and electronic angular momentum spatial distributions are observed at 193 nm, suggesting that the dominant excitation at these photon energies is to a state of different symmetry from that giving rise to the Hartley band and also indicating the participation of at least one other state in the dissociation process. Evidence for a contribution from absorption into the tail of the Hartley band at 193 nm is also presented. A particularly surprising result is the observation of nonzero, albeit small values for all three rank K = 1 orientation moments of the angular momentum distribution. The polarization results obtained at 193 and 205 nm, together with those observed previously at longer wavelengths, are interpreted using an analysis of the long range quadrupole-quadrupole interaction between the O(1D2) and O2(1Deltag) species.  相似文献

The dissociation of OCS has been investigated subsequent to excitation at 248 nm using velocity map ion imaging. Speed distributions, speed dependent translational anisotropy parameters, and the atomic angular momentum orientation and alignment are reported for the channel leading to S((3)P(J)). The speed distributions and beta parameters are in broad agreement with previous work and show behavior that is highly sensitive to the S-atom spin-orbit state. The data are shown to be consistent with the operation of at least two triplet production mechanisms. Interpretation of the angular momentum polarization data in terms of an adiabatic picture has been used to help identify a likely dissociation pathway for the majority of the S((3)P(J)) products, which strongly favors production of J=2 fragment atoms, correlated, it is proposed, with rotationally hot and vibrationally cold CO cofragments. For these fragments, optical excitation to the 2 (1)A(') surface is thought to constitute the first step, as for the singlet dissociation channel. This is followed by crossing, via a conical intersection, to the ground 1 (1)A(') state, from where intersystem crossing occurs, populating the 1 (3)A(')1 (3)A(")((3)Pi) states. The proposed mechanism provides a qualitative rationale for the observed spin-orbit populations, as well as the S((3)P(J)) quantum yield and angular momentum polarization. At least one other production mechanism, leading to a more statistical S-atom spin-orbit state distribution and rotationally cold, vibrationally hot CO cofragments, is thought to involve direct excitation to either the (3)Sigma(-) or (3)Pi states.  相似文献

Speed distributions, and spatial anisotropy and atomic angular momentum polarization parameters have been determined for the O((3)P(J)) products following the photodissociation of ozone at 248 and 226 nm using velocity map ion imaging. The data have been interpreted in terms of two dissociation mechanisms that give rise to fast and slow products. In both cases, excitation is believed to occur to the B state. Consistent with previous interpretations, the speed distributions, translational anisotropy parameters, and angular momentum polarization moments support the assignment of the major pathway to curve crossing from the B to the repulsive R surface, generating fast fragments in a wide range of vibrational states. For the slow fragments, it is proposed that following excitation to the B state, the system crosses onto the A state. The crossing seam is only accessible to molecules that are highly vibrationally excited and therefore possess modest recoil speeds. Once on the A state, the wavepacket is thought to funnel through a conical intersection to the ground state. The velocity distributions, spatial anisotropy parameters, spin-orbit populations and polarization data each lend support to this mechanism.  相似文献

We present the quantum mechanical expressions for the angular momentum distribution of the photofragments produced in slow predissociation. The paper is based on our recent theoretical treatment [J. Chem. Phys. 123, 034307 (2005)] of the recoil angle dependence of the photofragment multipole moments which explicitly treat the role of molecular axis rotation on the electronic angular momentum polarization of the fragments. The electronic wave function of the molecule was used in the adiabatic body frame representation. The rigorous expressions for the fragment state multipoles which have been explicitly derived from the scattering wave function formalism have been used for the case of slow predissociation where a molecule lives in the excited quasibound state much longer than a rotation period. Possible radial nonadiabatic interactions were taken into consideration. The optical excitation of a single rotational branch and the broadband incoherent excitation of all possible rotational branches have been analyzed in detail. The angular momentum polarization of the photofragments has been treated in the high-J limit. The polarization of the photofragment angular momenta predicted by the theory depends on photodissociation mechanism and can in many cases be significant.  相似文献

The unimolecular dissociation dynamics of aluminum clusters following collision with either a rare gas atom or a surface is investigated by classical trajectory simulations with model potentials. Two conformers of Al(6) with very distinct shapes, i.e., the spherical O(h) and planar C(2)(h) clusters, are considered in this work. The initial vibrational energy and angular momentum distributions resulting from collision, as well as the energy and angular momentum resolved lifetime distributions, of excited clusters were determined for both collision-induced dissociation (CID) and surface-induced dissociation (SID) processes. The partitioning of excitation energy acquired upon collision was found to depend on the excitation mechanism (CID or SID), as well as on the cluster molecular shape, especially in the case of CID. For both types of processes, the energy and angular momentum resolved excited cluster lifetime distributions were found to decay exponentially, in agreement with statistical theories of chemical reactions, suggesting intrinsic Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) behavior. Moreover, the simulated microcanonical rate constants determined from the cluster lifetime distributions are in good agreement with the predictions of the orbiting transition state model of phase space theory (OTS/PST), which further supports the statistical character of cluster CID and SID. Thus, in the CID and SID of highly fluxional systems such as aluminum clusters, the rate of intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) is much faster than the dissociation rate, which validates one of the key assumptions, i.e., post-collision statistical behavior, underlying the models that are routinely used to determine cluster binding energies from experimental CID/SID cross sections.  相似文献

In the following paper we present translational anisotropy and angular momentum polarization data for O((3)P(1)) and O((3)P(2)) products of the photodissociation of molecular oxygen at 193 nm. The data were obtained using polarized laser photodissociation coupled with resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization and velocity-map ion imaging. Under the jet-cooled conditions employed, absorption is believed to be dominated by excitation into the Herzberg continuum. The experimental data are compared with previous experiments and theoretical calculations at this and other wavelengths. Semi-classical calculations performed by Groenenboom and van Vroonhoven [J. Chem. Phys, 2002, 116, 1965] are used to estimate the alignment parameters arising from incoherent excitation and dissociation and these are shown to agree qualitatively well with the available experimental data. Following the work of Alexander et al. [J. Chem. Phys, 2003, 118, 10566], orientation and alignment parameters arising from coherent excitation and dissociation are modelled more approximately by estimating phase differences generated subsequent to dissociation via competing adiabatic pathways leading to the same asymptotic products. These calculations lend support to the view that large values of the coherent alignment moments, but small values of the corresponding orientation moments, could arise from coherent excitation of (and subsequent dissociation via) parallel and perpendicular components of the Herzberg I, II and III transitions.  相似文献

We report extended measurements of the rotational polarization and correlated angular distribution of CN photofragments from ICN photodissociation, with a particular emphasis on the creation and detection of molecular orientation with circularly-polarized light. Doppler profiles of the nascent photoproducts are measured by Frequency-Modulated (FM) transient absorption, and the resulting high signal-to-noise data are valuable for verifying the form of the angular correlations between the recoil velocity, the photofragment rotational angular momentum, and the space-fixed frame defined by the dissociation polarization. A space-fixed bipolar moment notation can be used for an unambiguous characterization of the maximal set of polarization properties that can be created with one-photon excitation and detected with one-photon Doppler-resolved absorption spectroscopy. Relating the observed polarization moments to the various coherent and incoherent, adiabatic and non-adiabatic mechanisms, that have been derived and verified extensively in the case of diatomic photodissociation to polarized atomic fragments, is not unambiguous in the case of diatomic fragments from triatomic precursors. Constraints among various polarization moments confirmed in the case of diatomic dissociation are not confirmed in this triatomic case, where the perpendicular transitions to non-degenerate A' and A' components of a linear Omega = 1 state are qualitatively different from excitation to degenerate Omega = +/-1 states in a diatomic molecule.  相似文献

The dissociation dynamics of HOD via two-photon excitation to the C? state have been investigated using the H-atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight (TOF) technique. The H-atom action spectrum for the C? ← X? transition shows resolved rotational structure. Product translational energy distributions and angular distributions have also been recorded for the H + OD channel for three excited levels each with k(a)′ = 2. From these distributions, quantum state distributions and angular anisotropy parameters (β2 and β4) for the OD product were determined. These results are consistent with the nonadiabatic predissociation picture illustrated in the one-photon dissociation process for H2O. The heterogeneous dissociation pathway via Coriolis coupling is the dominant dissociation process in the present study. A high proportion of the total available energy is deposited into the rotational energy of the OD product. The anisotropic recoil distributions reveal the distinctive contributions from the alignment of the excited states and the dissociation process. Comparisons are also made between the results for HOD and H2O via the equivalent rotational transitions. The OH bond energy, D(o)(H?OD), of the HOD molecule is also determined to be 41283.0 ± 5 cm(-1).  相似文献

The authors report measured and computed molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions (MFPADs) and recoil frame photoelectron angular distributions (RFPADs) for the single photon ionization of the nonlinear molecule NO2 leading to the (1a2)-1 b 3A2 and (4a1)-1 3A1 states of NO2+. Experimentally, the RFPADs were obtained using the vector correlation approach applied to the dissociative photoionization (DPI) involving these molecular ionic states. The polar and azimuthal angle dependences of the photoelectron angular distributions are measured relative to the reference frame provided by the ion recoil axis and direction of polarization of the linearly polarized light. Experimental results are reported for the photon excitation energies hnu=14.4 and 22.0 eV. Theoretically the authors give expressions for both the MFPAD and the RFPAD. They show that the functional form in the recoil frame, where an average over the azimuthal dependence of the molecular fragments about the recoil direction is made, is identical to that they have earlier found for the DPI experiments performed on linear molecules. MFPADs were then computed using single-center expansion techniques within the fixed-nuclei frozen-core Hartree-Fock approximation. The computed cross sections for ionization to the (1a2)-1 b 3A2 state show a strong propensity for ionization with the polarization of the light perpendicular to the plane of the molecule, whereas the ionization to the (4a1)-1 3A1 state of the ion is of similar intensity for all orientations of the polarization of the light in the molecular frame. These qualitative features of the MFPAD are also evident in the RFPAD. The RFPAD for ionization leading to the (1a2)-1 b 3A2 state is strongly peaked in the perpendicular orientation, whereas the RFPAD for ionization leading to the (4a2)-1 3A1 state is much more nearly isotropic. Comparison between experimental and theoretical RFPADs indicates that the recoil angle for NO+ fragments is approximately 50 degrees relative to the symmetry axis of the initial C2v symmetry of the NO2 molecule in the ionization leading to the (1a2)-1 b 3A2 state and the recoil angle is approximately 120 degrees for the O+ fragment for ionization leading to the (4a1)-1 3A1 state.  相似文献

A combination of velocity map imaging and slicing techniques have been used to measure the product recoil anisotropy and angular momentum polarization for the photodissociation process I2-->I(2P(3/2))+I(2P(3/2)) and I2-->I(2P(3/2)))+I(2P(1/2)) in the 450-510 nm laser wavelength region using linearly polarized photolysis and probe laser light. The former channel is produced predominantly via perpendicular excitation to the 1Piu state, and the latter is predominantly parallel, via the B 3Pi(0u)+ state. In both cases we observe mostly adiabatic dissociation, which produces electronically aligned iodine atoms in the mid /m/=1/2 states with respect to the recoil direction.  相似文献

The translational kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) for the halogen loss reaction of the bromobenzene and iodobenzene cations has been reinvestigated on the microsecond time scale. Two necessary conditions of validity of the orbiting transition state theory (OTST) for the calculation of kinetic energy release distributions (KERDs) have been formulated. One of them examines the central ion-induced dipole potential approximation. As a second criterion, an adiabatic parameter is derived. The lower the released translational energy and the total angular momentum, the larger the reduced mass, the rotational constant of the molecular fragment, and the polarizability of the released atom, the more valid is the OTST. Only the low-energy dissociation of the iodobenzene ion (E approximately 0.45 eV, where E is the internal energy above the reaction threshold) is found to fulfill the criteria of validity of the OTST. The constraints that act on the dissociation dynamics have been studied by the maximum entropy method. Calculations of entropy deficiencies (which measure the deviation from a microcanonical distribution) show that the pair of fragments does not sample the whole of the phase space that is compatible with the mere specification of the internal energy. The major constraint that results from conservation of angular momentum is related to a reduction of the dimensionality of the dynamics of the translational motion to a two-dimensional space. A second and minor constraint that affects the KERD leads to a suppression of small translational releases, i.e., accounts for threshold behavior. At high internal energies, the effects of curvature of the reaction path and of angular momentum conservation are intricately intermeddled and it is not possible to specify the share of each effect.  相似文献

We present results of a combined theoretical and experimental study on the vibrational predissociation of the HCl dimer. On the theoretical side, photodissociation linewidths and product-state distributions for monomer stretch excited states with total angular momentum J=0 were computed, using the Fermi golden rule approximation. The resonances investigated include excitation of the hydrogen bond donor and acceptor stretches, as well as combinations of one of these modes with the intermolecular stretch and geared bend modes, for both even and odd permutation symmetry. Line strengths for the transitions from the J=1, K=0 ground state to excited states with J=0 were computed using quasibound states. On the experimental side, the photofragment angular distribution method was employed to obtain complete final-state distributions for the monomer stretch excited states. Three different transitions were probed, all starting from the lower tunneling component of the ground state: the (R)Q(0)(1) transition for excitation of the acceptor stretch and the (Q)R(0)(0) transition and unresolved (R)Q(0) branch for the donor stretch excitation. We find that, in contrast to the HF dimer, the excited-state alignment of the HCl dimer, resulting from excitation using a polarized laser beam, is completely lost on the time scale of the dissociation. The agreement between theory and experiment for the product-state distributions and line strengths is reasonable. The computed lifetimes are 1-2 orders of magnitude too small, which is attributed to a deficiency in the potential energy surface.  相似文献

A general equation for the three-dimensional angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected from fixed-in-space molecules of any symmetry by light of arbitrary polarization is derived. The state of the light polarization is described by the Stokes parameters. The equation is also valid for photoionization of polarized atoms and aligned or oriented rotating molecules. In the particular case of linear molecules the three-dimensional angular distribution of photoelectrons is fully characterized by five two-dimensional angular distributions. Simple ways to determine experimentally these two-dimensional functions are mentioned. The application of general equations is illustrated by a numerical example of photoionization of the C K-shell of CO molecule in the region of the σ? shape resonance.  相似文献

We present the quantum-mechanical expressions for the recoil angle dependence of the photofragment multipole moments which explicitly treat the role of molecular axis rotation on the electronic angular momentum polarization of the fragments. The paper generalizes the result of Siebbeles et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 100, 3610 (1994)] to the case of dissociation of rotating molecules. The electronic wave function of the molecule was used in the adiabatic body-frame representation. The obtained rigorous expressions for the fragment state multipoles have been explicitly derived from the scattering wave-function formalism and then simplified using the quasiclassical approximation in the high-J limit. Possible radial and Coriolis nonadiabatic interactions have been taken into consideration. It is shown that the rotation of the molecular axis is described by a number of rotation factors which depend on the rank of the incident-photon polarization matrix, on the dissociation mechanism, and on the classical angle of rotation of the molecular axis gamma.  相似文献

Multiphoton excitation and dissociation of SO(2) have been investigated in the wavelength range from 224 to 232 nm. Strong evidence is found for two-photon excitation to the H Rydberg state, followed by dissociation to SO + O and ionization of the SO product by absorption of a third photon. The two-photon excitation is resonantly enhanced via the C (1)B(2) intermediate state, and the two-photon yield spectrum thus bears a strong resemblance to the spectrum of this intermediate. Imaging of the O((3)P(2)), S((1)D(2)), and SO products suggests that, following dissociation of SO(2) from the H state, SO is produced in the A and B electronic states. S((1)D(2)) is produced both from two-photon dissociation of SO(2) to give S((1)D(2)) + O(2) and by single-photon dissociation of SO(+). In the former process, the O(2) is likely formed in all of its lowest three electronic states.  相似文献

The translational anisotropy and angular momentum polarization of the O(2)(a (1)Delta(g),v = 0;J = 15-27) molecular photofragment produced from the UV photodissociation of O(3) in the range from 270 to 300 nm have been determined using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization in conjunction with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. At the shortest photolysis wavelengths used, the fragments exhibit the anisotropic vector correlations expected from a prompt dissociation via the (1)B(2) <--(1)A(1) transition. Deviations from this behavior are observed at longer photolysis wavelengths with, in particular, the angular momentum orientation showing a significant reduction in magnitude. This indicates that the dissociation can no longer be described by a purely impulsive model and a change in geometry of the dissociating molecule is implied. This observation is substantiated by the variation of the translational anisotropy with photolysis wavelength. We also observe that the bipolar moments describing the angular momentum polarization of the odd J states probed are consistently lower in magnitude than those of the even J states and that this variation is observed for all photolysis wavelengths.  相似文献
