In this work, poly((PMMA‐b‐VI)‐co‐AA) (MMA = methyl methacrylate; VI = 1‐vinylimidazole; AA = acrylic acid) hydrogels and poly((PMMA‐b‐VI)‐co‐AA)/TPU (TPU = thermoplastic polyurethane) IPN (interpenetrating polymer networks) hydrogels have been fabricated via versatile infrared laser ignited frontal polymerization by using poly(PMMA‐b‐VI) macromonomer as the mononer. The frontal velocity and Tmax (the highest temperature that the laser beam detected at a fixed point) can be adjusted by varying monomer weight ratios, the concentration of BPO (BPO = benzoyl peroxide) and the amount of TPU. Moreover, the addition of TPU enhances the reactant viscosity to suppress the “fingering” of frontal polymerization (FP) and decrease Tmax of the reaction, providing a new inert carrier (TPU) to assist FP. Through the characterization of Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the desired structure can be proved to exist in the IPN hydrogels. Furthermore, poly((PMMA‐b‐VI)‐co‐AA)/TPU IPN hydrogels possesses more excellent mechanical behaviors than hydrogels without IPN structure. Besides, the poly((PMMA‐b‐VI)‐co‐AA) hydrogels present splendid sensitive properties toward substances of different flavor including sourness (CA, citric acid or GA, gluconic acid), umami (SG, sodium glutamate), saltiness (SC, sodium chloride), sweetness (GLU, glucose), enabling their potential as artificial tongue‐like sensing materials. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Frontal polymerization (FP) is applied for the synthesis of β‐cyclodextrin/poly(vinylimidazole‐co‐N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐acrylic acid) (β‐CD/P(VI‐co‐NVCL‐co‐AA)) copolymers. The dependence of frontal velocity and temperature on the initiator and cross‐linker are discussed. The synthesized copolymers have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermo‐pH dual‐stimuli responsive behavior of the hydrogel is determined by swelling measurement at different temperatures and pH values. Besides, the hydrogels show intrinsic self‐healing behavior and their healing efficiency is determined by the mechanical tests. Interestingly, we integrate FP with microfluidic technology, which may realize the execution of FP under continuous condition. Such simple microfluidics‐FP integrated approach has both methodological and practical value for the synthesis of functional materials. This paper mainly presents the synthesis and characterization of β‐cyclodextrin/poly(vinylimidazole‐co‐N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐acrylic acid) (β‐CD/P(VI‐co‐NVCL‐co‐AA)) copolymers by using thermal frontal polymerization (TFP). Hydrogels were found to be self‐healing with good mechanical performance and show dual thermo‐pH responsive behavior. Low‐cost, energy‐saving and efficient method of thermal frontal polymerization process was integrated with microfluidics technology to prepare supraball hydrogel. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. We report a new facile strategy for quickly synthesizing pH sensitive poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels (VI = N‐vinylimidazole; HEA = 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) by frontal polymerization. The appropriate amounts of VI, HEA, and ammonium persulfate (APS)/N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) couple redox initiator were mixed together at ambient temperature in the presence of glycerol as the solvent medium. Frontal polymerization (FP) was initiated by heating the upper side of the mixture with a soldering iron. Once initiated, no further energy was required for the polymerization to occur. The dependence of the front velocity and front temperature on the VI/HEA weight ratios were investigated. The pH sensitive behavior, morphology, and heavy metal removal study of poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels prepared via FP were comparatively investigated on the basis of swelling measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupling plasma spectrometer. Results show that the poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels prepared via FP exhibit good pH sensitivity and adsorption capacity. The FP can be exploited as an alternative means for synthesis of pH sensitive hydrogels in a fast and efficient way. The as‐prepared hydrogels can be applied to remove heavy metals. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 4005–4012, 2010  相似文献

We report the facile synthesis of poly(VI‐co‐MAA) superabsorbent polyampholytic hydrogels (VI = N‐vinylimidazole, MAA = methacrylic acid) via plasma‐ignited frontal polymerization (PIFP). On igniting the top surface of the reactants with air plasma, frontal polymerization occurred and poly(VI‐co‐MAA) hydrogels were obtained within minutes. The preparation parameters were investigated, along with swelling capacity, morphology, and chemical structures of poly(VI‐co‐MAA) hydrogels. Interestingly, the hydrogels are superabsorbent in water and show ampholytic characteristic toward pH. Moreover, the hydrogels are able to capture cationic dyes through electrostatic interaction, offering the potential for further development as dye adsorbents for water purification. In addition, nanocomposite hydrogels were obtained by embedding quantum dots (carbon dots or CdS nanocrystals) into the polymer matrix, which endows the nanocomposite hydrogels with favorable fluorescence and potential applications in bioimaging and biosensing. The results indicate that FP can be applied as an alternative means for facile synthesis of multifunctional hydrogels with additional efficiency and energy‐saving. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Poly(N‐vinylimidazole) (PVIm) hydrogels were prepared by γ‐irradiating binary mixtures of N‐vinylimidazole‐water in a 60Co‐γ source having 4.5 kGy/h dose rate. These affinity gels having different swelling ratio of Cu(II)‐chelated, Co(II)‐chelated and plain PVIm in acetate buffer were used in the albumin adsorption studies. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption on these gels from aqueous solutions containing different amounts of BSA at different pH adjusted with acetate and phosphate buffer was investigated in batch reactors. The adsorption capacities of BSA on/in the gels were decreased dramatically by increasing the ionic strength (I) adjusting with NaCl. BSA adsorption capacities of the metal ion‐chelated gels were higher than the plain PVIm gel even if the swelling ratio of the metal ion‐chelated gels was very low comparing to the PVIm gel. The rigidity of the metal ion‐chelated gel is very high and it can be used for the column applications. More than 95% of BSA were desorbed in 3 h in the desorption medium containing KSCN for PVIm gel and EDTA for metal ion‐chelated gels. These results indicate that PVIm and metal ion‐chelated PVIm gels are very efficient to remove BSA and the different metal ion‐chelated PVIm gels show different affinity for BSA or biomolecules.  相似文献

Well‐dispersed silver nanoparticles were successfully fabricated within poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐(acrylic acid)] [P(NIPAM‐co‐AA)] microgel particles which were synthesized with different cross‐linking densities. Their structures were studied by field‐emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV‐vis spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The interactions between the microgel particles and the incorporated silver nanoparticles were investigated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results revealed that there was charge transfer from the carbonyl groups of the microgel particles to the silver nanoparticles. Moreover, as the diameter of the AgNPs decreases, the charge‐transfer efficiency increases accordingly. The P(NIPAM‐co‐AA)/AgNPs hybrid microgel particles were thermoresponsive and their behavior completely reversible with several heating/cooling cycles.

Tandem atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) were used to synthesize a polystyrene‐co‐poly(acrylic acid) (poly(St‐co‐AA)) network, in which the two components were interconnected by covalent bond. First, a specific cross‐linker, 1,4‐bis(1′‐(4″‐acryloyloxy‐2″,2″,6″,6″‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxy)ethyl)benzene (di‐AET), a bifunctional alkoxyamine possessing two acrylate groups, was copolymerized with tert‐butyl acrylate through ATRP to prepare a precursor gel. The gel was then used to initiate the NMRP of styrene to prepare poly(St‐co‐(t‐BA)) conetwork, in which the cross‐linkages are composed of polystyrene segments. Finally, the poly(St‐co‐(t‐BA)) conetwork was hydrolyzed to produce amphiphilic poly(St‐co‐AA) conetwork. The resulting gels show swelling ability in both organic solvent and water, which is characteristic of amphiphilic conetworks. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of magnetic semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels was prepared in one‐stage strategy composed of linear poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) chains and magnetic γ‐Fe2O3 nanoparticles entrapped within the cross‐linked poly(acrylamide‐co‐vinylimidazole) (poly(AAm‐co‐VI)) network. The influence of PVA, weight ratio of AAm:VI, γ‐Fe2O3, and MBA on the swelling properties of the obtained nanocomposite hydrogels was evaluated. The prepared magnetic semi‐IPN hydrogels were fully characterized and used as absorbent for removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from water. Factors that influence the metal ion adsorption such as solution pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration, and temperature were studied in details. The experimental results were reliably described by Langmuir adsorption isotherms. The adsorption capacity of semi‐IPN nanocomposite for Pb(II) and Cd(II) were175.80 and 149.76 mg g?1, respectively. The kinetic experimental data indicated that the chemical sorption is the rate‐determining step. According to thermodynamic studies, Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption on the hydrogels was endothermic and also chemical in nature. The prepared magnetic PVA/poly(AAm‐co‐VI) semi‐IPN hydrogels could be employed as efficient and low‐cost adsorbents of heavy metal ions from water. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The electrically conductive polypyrrole/dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid/poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) (PPy/DBSA/poly(NIPAAm‐co‐AA)) composite microgels were synthesized by a chemical oxidation of pyrrole in the presence of DBSA as the primary dopant, and poly(NIPAAm‐co‐AA) microgels as the polymeric codopant and template, in which APS was used as the oxidant. It was proposed to prepare “intelligent” polymer microgel particles containing both thermosensitive and electrically conducting properties. The polymerization of pyrrole took place directly inside the microgel networks, leading to formation of composite microgels and the morphology was observed by transmission electron microscope. PPy particles interacted strongly with microgels, as the acid groups of microgels acted as the polymeric codopant. The composite microgels thus formed showed electrically conducting behavior dependent on humidity and temperature. At temperatures lower than lower critical solution temperature, the conductivity decreased with increasing the humidity and a small hysteresis phenomenon was observed. The hysteresis became indistinct when temperature was near volume phase transition temperature. However, after the treatment of high temperature and high humidity, the conductivity increased surprisingly due to the structure reorganization inside the composite microgels. The distinctive functionality of the PPy composite microgels was expected to be utilized in many attractive applications. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) (poly(NIPAAm‐AA)) copolymer latex particles (microgels) were synthesized by the method of soapless emulsion polymerization. Poly(NIPAAm‐AA) copolymer microgels have the property of being thermosensitive. The concentration of acrylic acid (AA) and crosslinking agent N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide were important factors to influence the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of poly(NIPAAm‐AA) microgels. The effects of AA and crosslinking agent on the swelling behavior of poly(NIPAAm‐AA) microgels were also studied. The poly(NIPAAm‐AA) copolymer microgels were then used as a thermosensitive drug carrier to load caffeine. The effects of concentration of AA and crosslinking agent on the control release of caffeine were investigated. How the AA content and crosslinking agent influenced the morphology and LCST of the microgels was discussed in detail. The relationship of morphology, swelling, and control release behavior of these thermosensitive microgels was established. A new scheme was proposed to interpret the control release of the microgels with different morphological structures. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the synthesis of poly[(sodium sulfamate/carboxylate) isoprene‐b‐2‐vinyl pyridine] block polyampholytes (SCPI‐P2VP), utilizing anionic polymerization and post polymerization functionalization reactions. The precursor poly(isoprene‐b‐(2‐vinylpyridine)) diblock copolymers (PI‐P2VP), containing a polyisoprene (PI) block with high 1,4 microstructure, were prepared by anionic polymerization high vacuum techniques, in two steps, involving change of the polymerization solvent. Subsequent functionalization of the PI block with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate, introduced sulfamate and carboxylate groups in the polymer chains and produced the desired block polyampholytes. The successful synthesis of the polyampolytes was corroborated by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy measurements. The self‐assembly behaviour of the aforementioned polyampholytes was studied in aqueous solutions as a function of pH, by aid of dynamic and static light scattering, zeta potential, fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Experimental results indicate that the block polyampholytes form micellar structures with P2VP cores and SCPI coronas at pH > 6, whereas more compact nanoparticles are formed at pH < 4 from the complexation of positively charged P2VP and SCPI, stabilized by excess negative charges of uncomplexed SCI segments. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers comprising poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) backbone and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) side chains, i.e. P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA were synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Direct initiation of the secondary chlorinated site of CTFE units facilitates grafting of PSSA, as revealed by FT‐IR spectroscopy. The successful “grafting from” method and the microphase‐separated structure of the graft copolymer were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) also showed the decrease in the crystallinity of P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) upon graft copolymerization. Composite NF membranes were prepared from P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA as a top layer coated onto P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) ultrafiltration support membrane. Both the rejections and the flux of composite membranes increased with increasing PSSA concentration due to the increase in SO3H groups and membrane hydrophilicity, as supported by contact angle measurement. The rejections of NF membranes containing 47 wt% of PSSA were 83% for Na2SO4 and 28% for NaCl, and the solution flux were 18 and 32 L/m2 hr, respectively, at 0.3 MPa pressure. A new monomer, exo‐3,6‐epoxy‐1,2,3,6‐tetrahydrophthalimidoethanoyl‐5‐fluorouracil (ETFU), was synthesized by the reaction of exo‐3,6‐epoxy‐1,2,3,6‐tetrahydrophthalimidoethanoyl chloride (ETPC) and 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU). The homopolymer of ETFU and its copolymers with acrylic acid (AA) and vinyl acetate (VAc) were prepared via photopolymerizations with 2,2‐dimethoxy‐2‐phenylacetophenone at 25 °C for 48 h. The structures of the synthesized monomer and polymers were identified by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The ETFU contents in poly(ETFU‐co‐AA) and poly(ETFU‐co‐VAc) were 26 mol % and 26 mol %, respectively. The number‐average molecular weights of the polymers, as determined by gel permeation chromatography, ranged from 5600 to 17,000. The in vitro cytotoxicities of 5‐FU and the synthesized samples against mouse mammary carcinoma and human histiocytic lymphoma cancer cell lines increased in the following order: ETFU > 5‐FU > poly(ETFU‐co‐AA) > poly(ETFU) > poly(ETFU‐co‐VAc). The in vivo antitumor activities of the polymers against Balb/C mice bearing the sarcoma 180 tumor cells were greater than those of 5‐FU at all doses tested. The inhibitions of the samples for SV40 DNA replication and antiangiogenesis were much greater than the inhibition of the control. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this work, we report a series of poly(itaconic acid‐co‐acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) (poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm)) hydrogels via frontal polymerization (FP). FP starts on the top of the reaction mixture with aid of heating provided from soldering iron gun. Once polymerization initiated, no further energy is required to complete the process. The influences of IA/AAc weight ratios on frontal velocities, temperatures, and conversions on the reaction time are thoroughly investigated and discussed where the amount of AAm monomer remains constant. Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis, and the swelling measurement are applied to characterize the as‐synthesized poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm) hydrogels. Interestingly, the swelling ratios of the hydrogels are changed with different IA/AAc contents, and the maximum swelling ratios are ~4439% in water. SEM images describe highly porous morphologies and explain good swelling capabilities. Moreover, the poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm) hydrogels exhibit superior pH‐responsive ability. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 2214–2221  相似文献

We describe the synthesis and characterization of a weakly cross‐linked poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐ethyl acrylate) alkali‐swellable emulsion (ASE), as well as an investigation of its influence on the rate of polymer diffusion in latex films. The films examined were formed from poly(vinyl acetate‐co‐butyl acrylate) latex particles containing a small amount of acrylic acid as a comonomer. Polymer diffusion rates were monitored by the energy transfer technique. We found that the presence of the ASE component, either in the acid form or fully neutralized by ammonia or sodium hydroxide, had very little effect on the polymer diffusion rate. However, in the presence of 2 wt % NH4‐ASE, there was a small but significant increase in the polymer diffusion rate. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer of ‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) linked with comb‐shaped [poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydeoxyethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)] (PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL) was successfully synthesized by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) with ring‐opening anionic polymerization and coordination–insertion ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The α‐methoxy poly(ethylene oxide) (mPEO) with ω,3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanylpropionic acid (BSPA) end group (mPEO‐BSPA) was prepared by the reaction of mPEO with 3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanyl propionic acid chloride (BSPAC), and the reaction efficiency was close to 100%; then the mPEO‐BSPA was used as a macro‐RAFT agent for the copolymerization of styrene (St) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) using 2,2‐azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The molecular weight of copolymer PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) increased with the monomer conversion, but the molecular weight distribution was a little wide. The influence of molecular weight of macro‐RAFT agent on the polymerization procedure was discussed. The ROP of ε‐caprolactone was then completed by initiation of hydroxyl groups of the PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) precursors in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). Thus, the amphiphilic copolymer of linear PEO linked with comb‐like P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL was obtained. The final and intermediate products were characterized in detail by NMR, GPC, and UV. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 467–476, 2006  相似文献

The interaction of two polyampholyte systems, poly(1‐vinylimidazole‐co‐acrylic acid) and interpolymer complex poly(acrylic acid)/poly(1‐vinylimidazole) with copper(II) ions in water, was examined with potentiometry (pH‐metry and Cu‐selective electrode) and electron spin‐resonance spectroscopy. Coordination of Cu2+ with copolymer proceeded by carboxylic groups, whereas the interpolymer system azole units were also involved in the inner sphere of the complex. Synergism between coordination with metal ions and intramolecular hydrogen or ionic bonds was shown. The interpolymer complex was an effective system for binding, extracting, and concentrating copper ions from water. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Agar microspheres were prepared by water–oil emulsification and cross‐linked under alkaline condition. The thermoresponsive hydrophobic copolymer, poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐lauryl methacrylate‐co‐acrylamide), was grafted on the agar microspheres via atom transfer radical polymerization. The agar microspheres grafted with copolymers were characterized by light microphotography, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The chain lengths and hydrophobic monomer ratio of the grafting linear polymer had significant effects on the hydrophobicity and adsorption capacity of agar microspheres at different temperatures. The thermoresponsive microspheres were used for separation of proteins and showed binding and release behavior by change of temperatures without change in mobile phase composition. Thus, we suggest thermoresponsive agar microspheres as an alternative separation media for all‐aqueous bioseparations.  相似文献

Polymeric microspheres were prepared from a Merrifield resin via nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization. Polystyrene, poly(acetoxystyrene), and poly[styrene‐b‐(methyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene)], poly(acetoxystyrene‐b‐styrene), and poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) copolymers were demonstrated to graft onto 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy nitroxide bound Merrifield resins. The polymerization control was enhanced both on the surface and in solution by the addition of sacrificial nitroxide. The significant increase in the particle diameter (more than a fivefold volume increase for polystyrene brushes) showed that polymer growth was not only on the surface but also within the particles, and this diameter increase could be adjusted through changes in the molecular weight of the polymers. The microspheres were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, particle size analysis, and optical microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A photoresponsive microgel is designed by the combination of a noncovalent assembly strategy with a covalent cross‐linking method. End‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) with azobenzene [(PEG‐(Azo)2)] was mixed with acrylate‐modified β‐CD (β‐CD‐MAA) to form photoresponsive inclusion complex through host–guest interaction. The above photoresponsive complex was cross‐linked by thiol‐functionalized PEG (PEG‐dithiol) via Michael addition click reaction. The photoreversibility of resulted microgel was studied by TEM, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and 1H NMR measurements. The characterization results indicated that the reversible size changes of the microgel could be achieved by alternative UV–Vis irradiations with good repeatability.  相似文献
