The crystallization and melting behavior of a series of poly(glycerol adipate) (PGA) based graft copolymers with either poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), or PCL‐b‐PEO diblock copolymer side chains (i.e., PGA‐g‐PCL, PGA‐g‐PEO, and PGA‐g‐(PCL‐b‐PEO)) was studied using polarized light optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). These results were compared with the behavior of the corresponding linear analogs (PEO, PCL, and PCL‐b‐PEO). POM revealed that spherulitic morphology was retained after grafting. However, spherulite radius as well as radial growth rate was significantly smaller in the graft copolymers. Evaluation of isothermal crystallization kinetics by means of the Avrami theory revealed that the nucleation density was much higher in the graft copolymers. The DSC results indicated that the degree of crystallinity decreased strongly upon grafting while the melting temperatures of PGA‐g‐PCL and PGA‐g‐PEO were found to be close to the values of neat PCL and PEO, respectively. This was attributed to the absence of specific thermodynamic interactions, and, additionally, to lamella thicknesses being similar to those of the homopolymers. The latter point was confirmed by SAXS measurements. In case of PCL‐b‐PEO diblock copolymers and PGA‐g‐(PCL‐b‐PEO) graft copolymers, the crystallization behavior and thus the resulting lamellar morphology is more complex, and a suitable model was developed based on a combination of DSC, WAXD, and SAXS data. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyesters constitute an important class of materials for in vivo biomedical applications. Poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) is a hydrophobic biodegradable polyester which is employed to a lesser extent in drug delivery applications due to its rather limited range of physicochemical characteristics. Here, we present a new paradigm for the synthesis of functionalized PCL via copolymerization of caprolactone with α,ω‐epoxy esters. Ethyl 2‐methyl‐4‐pentenoate oxide was used as a monomer which was copolymerized with ?‐caprolactone to yield random copolymers of poly(?‐caprolactone‐co‐ethyl‐2‐methyl‐4‐pentenoate oxide). The reaction conditions were optimized to generate functionalization greater than 25%. The use of ester‐epoxides favors a statistical and uniform distribution of monomer along the polymer backbone, which while preserving some of the key properties of PCL such as glass transition that is below room temperature, allows the tailoring of the melting behavior of PCL. The strategy presented herein opens up new avenues for engineering PCL properties for biomedical applications. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. We report the synthesis of linear‐ and brush‐type poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) networks and investigate their thermal, mechanical, and shape memory behavior. Brush‐PCLs are prepared by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a norbornenyl‐functionalized ?‐caprolactone macromonomer (MM‐PCL) of different molecular weights. The linear analog, diacrylate end‐functionalized PCL (linear‐PCL), having comparable molecular weight of side chain of brush‐PCL is also synthesized. These polymers are thermally cured by a radical initiator in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate crosslinker. Thermal and linear viscoelastic properties as well as shape memory performance of the resulting PCL networks are investigated, and are significantly impacted by the PCL architecture. Therefore, our work highlights that tailoring macromolecular architecture is useful strategy to manipulate thermal, mechanical, and resulting shape memory properties. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐ and temperature‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐block?4‐vinylbenzoic acid) (poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA)) diblock copolymer brushes on silicon wafers have been successfully prepared by combining click reaction, single‐electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Azide‐terminated poly(NIPAAm) brushes were obtained by SET‐LRP followed by reaction with sodium azide. A click reaction was utilized to exchange the azide end group of a poly(NIPAAm) brushes to form a surface‐immobilized macro‐RAFT agent, which was successfully chain extended via RAFT polymerization to produce poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes. The addition of sacrificial initiator and/or chain‐transfer agent permitted the formation of well‐defined diblock copolymer brushes and free polymer chains in solution. The free polymer chains were isolated and used to estimate the molecular weights and polydispersity index of chains attached to the surface. Ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the immobilization of initiator on the silicon wafer, poly(NIPAAm) brush formation via SET‐LRP, click reaction, and poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush formation via RAFT polymerization. The poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes demonstrate stimuli‐responsive behavior with respect to pH and temperature. The swollen brush thickness of poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush increases with increasing pH, and decreases with increasing temperature. These results can provide guidance for the design of smart materials based on copolymer brushes. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013, 51, 2677–2685  相似文献

Organic–inorganic hybrid diblock copolymers composed of poly(ε‐caprolactone) and poly(MA POSS) [PCL‐b‐P(MA POSS)] were synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of 3‐methacryloxypropylheptaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MA POSS) with dithiobenzoate‐terminated poly(ε‐caprolactone) as the macromolecular chain transfer agent. The dithiobenzoate‐terminated poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐CTA) was synthesized via the atom transfer radical reaction of 2‐bromopropionyl‐terminated PCL with bis(thiobenzoyl)disulfide in the presence of the complex of copper (I) bromide with N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine. The results of molecular weights and polydispersity indicate that the polymerizations were in a controlled fashion. The organic–inorganic diblock copolymer was incorporated into epoxy to afford the organic–inorganic nanocomposites. The nanostructures of the organic–inorganic composites were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the organic–inorganic nanocomposites displayed the increased yields of degradation residues compared to the control epoxy. In the organic–inorganic nanocomposites, the inorganic block [viz., P(MA POSS)] had a tendency to enrich at the surface of the materials and the dewettability of surface for the organic–inorganic nanocomposites were improved in terms of the measurement of surface contact angles. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined, high‐density poly(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) [poly(MEO2MA)] brushes were fabricated through a reliable strategy by the combination of self‐assembly of a monolayer of 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxy silane on silicon surface to immobilize 4‐cyano‐4‐(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl)sulfanyl pentanoic acid chain transfer agent and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer‐mediated polymerization of MEO2MA. The whole fabrication process of the poly(MEO2MA) brushes was followed by water contact angle, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Characterization of the poly(MEO2MA) brushes, such as molecular weight and thickness determination, were measured by gel permeation chromatography and ellipsometry, and the grafting density was estimated. The temperature‐responsive property of the poly(MEO2MA) brushes was further investigated and the result verified the brush‐to‐mushroom phase transition of the poly(MEO2MA) chains from low to high temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the coating of maghemite (γ‐Fe2O3) nanoparticles with poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) through a covalent grafting to technique. ω‐Hydroxy‐PCL was first synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone with aluminum isopropoxide and benzyl alcohol as a catalytic system. The hydroxy end groups of PCL were then derivatized with 3‐isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane in the presence of tetraoctyltin. The triethoxysilane‐functionalized PCL macromolecules were finally allowed to react on the surface of maghemite nanoparticles. The composite nanoparticles were characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Effects of the polymer molar mass and concentration on the amount of polymer grafted to the surface were investigated. Typical grafting densities up to 3 μmol of polymer chains per m2 of maghemite surface were obtained with this grafting to technique. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Resorbable poly(ester anhydride) networks based on ε‐caprolactone, L ‐lactide, and D,L ‐lactide oligomers were synthesized. The ring‐opening polymerization of the monomers yielded hydroxyl telechelic oligomers, which were end‐functionalized with succinic anhydride and reacted with methacrylic anhydride to yield dimethacrylated oligomers containing anhydride bonds. The degree of substitution, determined by 13C NMR, was over 85% for acid functionalization and over 90% for methacrylation. The crosslinking of the oligomers was carried out thermally with dibenzoyl peroxide at 120 °C, leading to polymer networks with glass‐transition temperatures about 10 °C higher than those of the constituent oligomers. In vitro degradation tests, in a phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0) at 37 °C, revealed a rapid degradation of the networks. Crosslinked polymers based on lactides exhibited high water absorption and complete mass loss in 4 days. In ε‐caprolactone‐based networks, the length of the constituent oligomer determined the degradation: PCL5‐AH, formed from longer poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) blocks, lost only 40% of its mass in 2 weeks, whereas PCL10‐AH, composed of shorter PCL blocks, completely degraded in 2 days. The degradation of PCL10‐AH showed characteristics of surface erosion, as the dimensions of the specimens decreased steadily and, according to Fourier transform infrared, labile anhydride bonds were still present after 90% mass loss. © 2003 The Authors. Organic–inorganic hybrid brushes comprised of macrocyclic oligomeric silsesquioxane (MOSS) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) with cis‐hexa[(phenyl) (2‐hydroxyethylthioethyldimethylsiloxy)]cyclohexasiloxane as the initiator. The MOSS macromer bearing hydroxyl groups was synthesized via the thiol‐ene radical addition reaction between cis‐hexa[(phenyl)(vinyldimethylsiloxy)]cyclohexasiloxane and β‐mercaptoethanol. The organic–inorganic PCL cyclic brushes were characterized by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). These MOSS–PCL brushes were then used to prepare the supramolecular inclusion complexes with α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD). The X‐ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that the organic–inorganic inclusion complexes (ICs) have a channel‐type crystalline structure. It is noted that the molar ratios of CL unit to α‐CD for the organic–inorganic ICs are quite dependent on the lengths of the PCL chains bonded to the silsesquioxane macrocycle. While the PCL chains were short, the efficiency of inclusion complexation was significantly decreased. The decreased efficiency could be attributed to the repulsion of the adjacent PCL chains bonded to the silsesquioxane macrocycle and the restriction of the bulky silsesquioxane macrocycle on the motion of PCL chains; this effect is pronounced with decreasing the length of the PCL chains. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly(3‐hydroxbutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate)/poly(ε‐caprolactone) block copolymers (PHCLs) with three different weight ratios of PCL blocks (38%, named PHCL‐38; 53%, named PHCL‐53; and 60%, named PHCL‐60) were synthesized by using PHBV with two hydroxyl end groups to initiate ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone. During DSC cooling process, melt crystallization of PHCL‐53 at relatively high cooling rates (9, 12, and 15 °C min?1) and PHCL‐60 at all the selected cooling rates corresponded to PCL blocks so that PHCL‐53 and PHCL‐60 were used to study the nonisothermal crystallization behaviors of PCL blocks. The kinetics of PCL blocks in PHCL‐53 and PHCL‐60 under nonisothermal crystallization conditions were analyzed by Mo equation. Mo equation was successful in describing the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PCL blocks in PHCLs. Crystallization activation energy were estimated using Kissinger's method. The results of kinetic parameters showed that both blocks crystallized more difficultly than corresponding homopolymers. With the increase of PCL content, the crystallization rate of PCL block increased gradually. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2010  相似文献

Acrylamide was graft polymerized onto the surface of a chemically crosslinked and amorphous biodegradable polyester, poly(1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one). Electron beam irradiation at a dose of 5 Mrad was used to generate the initiating species in the polyester. The degradation behavior in vitro at pH 7.4 and 37°C in a phosphate buffer solution was studied for untreated, irradiated, and acrylamide‐grafted polymer. Differences in weight loss performance were observed between virgin and treated polymers. The acrylamide‐grafted poly(1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one) was totally degraded after 43 weeks as compared to 48 weeks for the irradiated and 55 weeks for the virgin polymer. On the other hand, the treated polymers showed a higher resistance to degradation in terms of weight loss during the intermediate part of the degradation, i.e., between about 5 and 35 weeks. After this period, the irradiated and particularly the acrylamide grafted poly(1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one) degraded much more rapidly than the virgin polymer. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of novel amphiphilic brush‐dendritic‐linear poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate]‐b‐polyamidoamine‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) copolymers (PPEGMEMA‐b‐Dmb‐PCL) (m = 1, 2, and 3: the generation number of dendron) were synthesized by the combination techniques of click chemistry, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The brush‐dendritic copolymers bearing hydrophilic brush PPEGMEMA and hydrophobic dendron polyamidoamine protected by the tert‐butoxycarbonyl (Boc) groups [Dm‐(Boc) (m = 1, 2, and 3)] were for the first time prepared by ATRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate monomer (PEGMEMA) initiated with the dendron initiator, which was prepared from 2′‐azidoethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate (AEBIB) and Dm‐(Boc) terminated with a clickable alkyne by click chemistry. Then, the brush‐dendritic copolymers with primary amine groups (PPEGMEMA‐b‐Dm) were obtained from the removal of the protected Boc groups of the brush‐dendritic copolymers in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. The brush‐dendritic‐linear PPEGMEMA‐b‐Dmb‐PCL copolymers were synthesized from ROP of ε‐caprolactone monomer using PPEGMEMA‐b‐Dm as the macroinitiators and stannous octoate as catalyst in toluene at 130 °C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that integrates hydrophilic brush polymer PPEGMEMA with hydrophobic polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendron and PCL to form amphiphilic brush‐dendritic‐linear copolymers. The amphiphilic brush‐dendritic‐linear copolymers can self‐assemble into spherical micellar structures in aqueous solution. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel thermoplastic elastomers based on multi‐block copolymers of poly(l ‐lysine) (PLL), poly(N‐ε‐carbobenzyloxyl‐l ‐lysine) (PZLL), poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were synthesized by combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and chain extension via l ‐lysine diisocyanate (LDI). SEC and 1H NMR were used to characterize the multi‐block copolymers, with number‐average molecular weights between 38,900 and 73,400 g/mol. Multi‐block copolymers were proved to be good thermoplastic elastomers with Young's modulus between 5 and 60 MPa and tensile strain up to 1300%. The PLL‐containing multi‐block copolymers were electrospun into non‐woven mats that exhibited high surface hydrophilicity and wettability. The polypeptide–polyester materials were biocompatible, bio‐based and environment‐friendly for promising wide applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Novel biodegradable network polyesters were prepared from multifunctional aromatic carboxylic acids [trimesic acid (Y), pyromellic acid (X), and mellic acid (YM)] and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) diols with molecular weights of 530, 1250, and 2000. Prepolymers prepared by a melt polycondensation method were cast from dimethylformamide solutions and postpolymerized at 220 °C for various times to form a network. The resultant films were transparent, flexible, and insoluble in organic solvents. The network polyesters obtained were characterized by infrared absorption spectra, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analysis, density measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, and tensile testing. Some network polyester films, including YPCL1250, XPCL1250, and YMPCL2000, showed elastomeric properties with high ultimate elongation and low tensile modulus. The enzymatic degradation was measured by the weight loss of the network polyester films in a buffer solution with Rhizopus delemar lipase at 37 °C. The degree and rate of degradation increased with the increasing molecular weight of the PCL diols, but they decreased in the order of YPCL > XPCL > YMPCL because of the increase in the crosslinking densities of the network films. The degraded products after enzymatic degradation showed that the ester linkage of the PCL component and the aromatic ester linkage between Y and PCL diols were hydrolyzed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multifunctional, biocompatible, and brush‐grafted poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PEG/PCL) nanoparticles have been synthesized, characterized, and used as vehicles for transporting hydrophobic substances in water. For anchoring the polymer mixed brushes, we used magnetic‐silica particles of 40 nm diameter produced by the reverse microemulsion method. The surface of the silica particle was functionalized with biocompatible polymer brushes, which were synthesized by the combination of “grafting to” and “grafting from” techniques. PEG was immobilized on the particles surface, by “grafting to,” whereas PCL was growth by ROP using the “grafting from” approach. By varying the synthetic conditions, it was possible to control the amount of PCL anchored on the surface of the nanoparticles and consequently the PEG/PCL ratio, which is a vital parameter connected with the arrangement of the polymer brushes as well as the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance of the particles. Thus, adjusting the PEG/PCL ratio, it was possible to obtain a system formed by PEG and PCL chains grafted on the particle's surface that collapsed in segregated domains depending on the solvent used. For instance, the nanoparticles are colloidally stable in water due to the PEG domains and at the same time are able to transport, entrapped within the PCL portion, highly water‐insoluble drugs. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐PEG‐PCL) bearing pendant hydrophobic γ‐(carbamic acid benzyl ester) groups (PECB) and hydrophiphilic amino groups (PECN) were synthesized based on the functionalized comonomer γ‐(carbamic acid benzyl ester)‐ε‐caprolactone (CABCL). The thermal gelation behavior of the amphiphilic copolymer aqueous solutions was examined. The phase transition behavior could be finely tuned via the pendant groups, and an abnormal phenomenon occurred that the sol–gel transition temperature shifted to a higher temperature for PECB whereas a lower temperature for PECN. The micelles percolation was adopted to clarify the hydrogel mechanism, and the effect of the pendant groups on the micellization was further investigated in detail. The results demonstrated that the introduction of γ‐(carbamic acid benzyl ester) pendant groups significantly decreased the crystallinity of the copolymer micelles whereas amino pendant groups made the micelles easy to aggregate. Thus, the thermal gelation of PEG/PCL aqueous solution could be finely tuned by the pendant groups, and the pendant groups modified PEG/PCL hydrogels are expected to have great potential biomedical application. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylamide was graft polymerized onto the surface of a biodegradable semicrystalline polyester, poly(ε‐caprolactone). Electron beam irradiation at a dose of 5 Mrad was used to generate initiating species in the polyester. The degradation in vitro at pH 7.4 and 37°C in a phosphate buffer solution was studied for untreated, irradiated and acrylamide‐grafted polymers. In the case of poly(ε‐caprolactone), all materials showed similar behavior in terms of weight loss. No significant decrease in weight was observed up to 40 weeks, after which the loss of weight accelerated. The main differences in degradation behavior were found for the average molecular weights, n and w. Virgin poly(ε‐caprolactone) maintained n and w up to about 40 weeks, whereas the irradiated and grafted poly(ε‐caprolactone) showed similar continuous declines in n and w throughout the degradation period. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this study, we investigated the melting and crystallization behavior of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)‐capped poly(ε‐caprolactone) PCL with various lengths of PCL chains by means of X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. This organic–inorganic macromolecule possesses a tadpole‐like structure in which the bulky POSS cage is the “head” whereas PCL chain the “tail”. The novel organic–inorganic association result in the significant alterations in the melting and crystallization behavior of PCL. The POSS‐terminated PCL displayed the enhanced equilibrium melting points compared to the control PCL. Both the overall crystallization rate and the spherulitic growth rate of the POSS‐terminated PCLs increased with increasing the concentration of POSS (or with decreasing length of PCL chain in the hybrids). The analysis of Avrami equation shows that the crystallization of the POSS‐terminated PCL preferentially followed the mechanism of spherulitic growth with instantaneous nuclei. It is found that the folding free energy of surface for the POSS‐terminated PCLs decreased with increasing the concentration of POSS. Inorganic–organic hybrids mediated by hydrogen‐bonding interactions involving silicon oxide network and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared via an in situ sol–gel process of tetraethoxysilane in the presence of PCL. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that there were hydrogen‐bonding interactions between carbonyls of PCL and silanol hydroxyls that were formed by incomplete polycondensation in the sol–gel process. In terms of the frequency shift of the hydroxyl stretching vibration bands, it is concluded that the strength of the interassociation between PCL and silicon oxide networks is weaker than that of the self‐association in the control silica network. The phenomenon of equilibrium melting point depression was observed for the PCL/silica system. The hybridization of PCL with silica network causes a considerable increase in the overall crystallization rate and dramatically influences the mechanism of nucleation and growth of the PCL crystallization. The analysis of isothermal crystallization kinetic data according to the Hoffman‐Lauritzen theory shows that with increasing silica content in the hybrids, the surface energy of extremity surfaces increases dramatically for the hybrids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
