Electro‐optic side‐chain polymers have been synthesized by the post‐functionalization of methacrylate isocyanate polymers with novel phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene bridge (FTC) nonlinear optical chromophores. For this application, FTC‐based chromophores were modified in their electronic donor structure, exhibiting much larger molecular hyperpolarizabilities compared with the benchmark FTC. Of these new chromophores, absorption spectra, hyper‐Rayleigh scattering experiment, and thermal analysis were carried out to confirm availability as effective nonlinear optical units for electro‐optic side‐chain polymers. The electro‐optic coefficients (r33) of obtained polymers were investigated in the process of in situ poling by monitoring the temperature, current flow, poling field, and electro‐optic signal. Compared with the nonsubstituted analogue, benxyloxy modified FTC chromophore significantly achieved higher nonlinear optical property, exhibiting molecular hyperpolarizability at 1.9 μm of 4600 × 10?30 esu and an r33 value of 150 pm/V at the wavelength of 1.31 μm. Synthesized electro‐optic polymers showed high glass transition temperature (Tg), so that the temporal stability examination exhibited >78% of the electro‐optic intensity remaining at 85 °C over 500 h. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A methacrylate‐based crosslinking hyperbranced polymers have been synthesized through initiator‐fragment incorporation radical polymerization and used for the temperature stable electro‐optic (EO) polymer application. This polymer consists of methyl methacrylate, 2‐metacryloxyethyl isocyanate, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) monomers. The use of EGDMA as a bifunctional unit resulted in the solvent‐soluble crosslinking hyperbranched chain, so that the EO polymer enhanced glass transition temperatures. A phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene bridge nonlinear optical chromophore was attached to the polymer backbone as the side‐chain by a post‐functionalization reaction. The loading concentration of the chromophore was varied between 30 and 50 wt % by simply changing the mixing ratio of the precursor polymer to the chromophore. The synthesized EO polymers produced optical quality films with a light propagation loss of 0.61 dB/cm in a slab waveguide at 1.31 μm. The electrically poled film had an EO coefficient (r33) of 139 pm/V at 1.31 μm. The EO crosslinking hyperbranced polymer had a high‐glass transition temperature of 170 °C, and exhibited excellent temporal stability of the EO activity at 85 °C for 500 h. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High glass transition temperature poly(N‐cyclohexyl‐5‐norbornene‐2,3‐dicarboximide)s (NDI)s prepared by ring opening metathesis polymerization yielded polymers with a narrow polydispersity and well‐controlled molecular weight materials when using the Grubbs first generation initiator. Polymers produced using the Grubbs second generation initiator could not be controlled easily. By initiator selection it was also possible to synthesize polymers with either 98 or 52% trans microstructures. These materials were employed as electro‐optic (EO) polymer hosts for high molecular hyperpolarizability (β) phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene bridge chromophores. This chromophore was modified by the incorporation of a tert‐butyldiphenylsilane group. The addition was able to further increase its EO coefficient (r33) to reach 93 pm/V in a trans rich poly(NDI) produced by the Grubbs first generation initiator, compared to a benchmark chromophore / polymer combination. We investigated in detail the relationship between polymer microstructure and their absolute molecular weight on forming the best host–guest with the high β chromophore. Our results indicate that by utilizing a very simple host–guest system a high r33 can be realized. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of four methacrylate copolymers obtained by radical addition polymerization of methyl methacrylate as well as a new methacrylate azophenylbenzoxazole chromophore in percentages of 10, 30, 50, and 70% were explored. The copolymers were amorphous and showed glass‐transition temperatures ranging from 132 to 146 °C. High‐quality polymer films were easily obtained by spin coating from N‐methylpyrrolidone solutions. Polymer films spun cast on iridium tin oxide (ITO) substrates were used in the electro‐optic (EO) experiments to evaluate the EO coefficients r33 using the reflection technique. The measured values fell in the range of 1.7–3.7 pm/V (laser incident wavelength of 1.552 μm) depending on the percentage of chromophore in the polymer. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We utilized the metathesis reaction to synthesize a new type of multifunctional polymer that contains a conjugated backbone and a second-order NLO chromophore as a pendant group. The 1,6-heptadiyne derivatives bearing NLO chromophores were easily polymerized by using a metathesis catalyst to give corresponding polymers with large optical nonlinearities. Molecular structural characterizations for the resulting polymers were achieved by 1H- and 13C-NMR, FTIR, and UV-visible spectroscopies. Soluble polymers were obtained up to 72 mol % of chromophore monomer portion in the copolymer. These amorphous polymers exhibited good film-forming abilities and thermal stability. The electro-optic coefficient, r33, of the poled polymer films was in the range of 0.5–10.1 pm/V, and the nonresonant values of the third-order NLO coefficient, χ(3) was found to be about 10−11 esu. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A one‐pot synthetic route based on copper‐catalyzed Huisgen reaction has been developed to functionalize a methacrylate propargylic polymer with azido‐substituted moieties. This procedure was used for the preparation of electro‐optic materials containing well‐known Disperse Red One (DR1) chromophores along with bulky adamantyl moieties (Adam). The postfunctionalization of the propargylic polymer was successfully achieved using different molar ratios of DR1/Adam. These novel polymers exhibit high glass transition temperature owing to the rigid structure of adamantyl units. Moreover, the second harmonic generation measurements demonstrated the effectiveness of adamantyl groups to act as insulating shield limiting thus the electrostatic interactions between chromophores. Indeed, higher optimal chromophore concentration (50 mol %) than in conventional DR1‐containing polymers (30 mol %) allowed us to increase the d33 coefficient up to 92 pm/V. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new method for the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers involving the use of ABx macromonomers containing linear units have been investigated. Two types of novel hyperbranched polyurethanes have been synthesized by a one‐pot approach. The structures of monomers and polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. The hyperbranched polymers have been proven to be extremely soluble in a wide range of solvents. Polymer electrolytes were prepared with hyperbranched polymer, linear polymer as the host, and lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) as the ion source. Analysis of the isotherm conductivity dependence of the ion concentration indicated that these hyperbranched polymers could function as a “solvent” for the lithium salt. The conductivity increased with the increasing concentration of hyperbranched polymers in the host polymer. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 344–350, 2002  相似文献

Two series of novel electro‐optic (EO) polycarbonates containing two different kinds of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores with tricyanofurane (TCF) electron acceptor have been successfully prepared through the facile polycondensation between diol NLO chromophore and bisphenol A bis(chloroformate). These new polycarbonates which were characterized by 1H‐NMR and Fourier transform infrared exhibited good solubility in common polar organic solvents. They also showed glass transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 124–156 °C. The morphology studies indicated that these polycarbonates had good film quality before and after corona poling. The EO coefficients (r33) of two polycarbonates films were up to 45 pm/V (PC‐TCFC‐2) and 75 pm/V (PC‐DFTC‐3) at the wavelength of 1310 nm. Moreover, good temporal stability of the poling‐induced dipole alignment was also achieved, and the resulting poled films of PC‐TCFC‐2 and PC‐DFTC‐3 could retain 90 and 80% of the initial EO activities at 85 °C for more than 500 h, respectively. Both EO activity and temporal stability results were better than the guest–host EO polymers containing the same concentration chromophores, which indicated that such kind of polycarbonates could effectively suppress the intermolecular electrostatic interaction and translate microscopic molecular hyperpolarizability into macroscopic EO activity. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New crosslinkable polymers with a nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophore as a pendant group were synthesized by condensation chain polymerization via palladium‐catalyzed carbon–carbon coupling reactions. The polymerization yields were almost quantitative between the diiodobenzene (DIB) and diethyldipropargyl malonate (DEDPM) or 4‐(dimethylamino)‐4′‐(6‐dipropargylacetoxypropylsulfonyl)stilbene (DASS‐6) monomers. To improve the molecular weight and mechanical properties of the NLO active polymer, we carried out the copolymerization with DIB and DASS‐6 with various feed ratios of DEDPM. The resulting polymers were soluble in organic solvents and spun‐cast onto indium tin oxide‐coated glass substrates to make thin films. The molecular structures of the resulting polymers were characterized with various instrumental methods to confirm the carbon–carbon coupling reactions between the DIB and diacetylene monomers. The absorption of the ultraviolet–visible spectrum of the resulting polymers was drastically reduced after thermal curing at 160 °C because of the crosslinking of the reactive acetylene group in the polymer backbone. The electrooptic coefficient (r33) measured at 1.3 μm ranged from 7 to 15 pm/V. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 4025–4034, 2001  相似文献

Novel AB2‐type monomers such as 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy)benzoic acid ( monomer 1 ), methyl 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy) benzoate ( monomer 2 ), and 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy)benzoyl chloride ( monomer 3 ) were synthesized. Solution polymerization and melt self‐polycondensation of these monomers yielded hydroxyl‐terminated hyperbranched aromatic poly(ether‐ester)s. The structure of these polymers was established using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights (Mw) of the polymers were found to vary from 2.0 × 103 to 1.49 × 104 depending on the polymerization techniques and the experimental conditions used. Suitable model compounds that mimic exactly the dendritic, linear, and terminal units present in the hyperbranched polymer were synthesized for the calculation of degree of branching (DB) and the values ranged from 52 to 93%. The thermal stability of the polymers was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, which showed no virtual weight loss up to 200 °C. The inherent viscosities of the polymers in DMF ranged from 0.010 to 0.120 dL/g. End‐group modification of the hyperbranched polymer was carried out with phenyl isocyanate, 4‐(decyloxy)benzoic acid and methyl red dye. The end‐capping groups were found to change the thermal properties of the polymers such as Tg. The optical properties of hyperbranched polymer and the dye‐capped hyperbranched polymer were investigated using ultraviolet‐absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermally stable poly(α-methyl styrene-co-maleimide) (MSMI) and poly(α-methyl styrene-co-4-carboxyphenyl maleimide) (MSCM) substrate polymers were obtained readily by free radical polymerization of comonomers. Introduction of a DR1 chromophore to the maleimide units of MSMI substrate polymer by the Mitsunobu reaction was dependent on the reaction solvent. The degree of substitution of DR1 into the MSMI polymer was bound to be 91.1 mol % and 0.4 mol % by UV spectrometers in the THF and DMF solvent, respectively. DR1 chromophore was, however, substituted in the MSCM polymer at 33.0 mol % by Mitsunobu reaction in the THF solvent. Both substrate and NLO polymer exhibited high thermal stability due to the incorporation of maleimide units in the polymer chain. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and initial decomposition temperature (Ti) of the NLO polymer were in the range of Tg = 185°C and Ti = 310–345°C. The electro-optic coefficient (r33) of NLO polymer was determined with an experimental setup capable of the real-time measurement while varying both the poling field and temperature. The NLO polymer MSMI-THF had a higher r33 value than MSCM-DR due to an increased degree of substitution of DR1 chromophore. MSMI-THF had a maximum r33 value of 16 pm/V at 135 MV/m poling field with a 632.8 nm light source. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 3715–3722, 1999  相似文献

A hyperbranched polyester was fractionated by precipitation to produce 10 fractions with molecular weights between 20 × 103 and 520 × 103 g mol?1. Each of these fractions was examined by size exclusion chromatography, dilute‐solution viscometry, intensity, and quasi‐elastic light scattering in chloroform solution at 298 K. High‐resolution solution‐state 13C NMR was used to determine the degree of branching; for all fractions this factor was 0.5 ± 0.1. Viscometric contraction factors, g′, decreased with increasing molecular weight, and the relation of this parameter to the configurational contraction factor, g, calculated from a theoretical relation suggested a very strong dependence on the universal viscosity constant, Φ, on the contraction factor. A modified Stockmayer–Fixman plot was used to determine the value of (〈r2o/Mw)1/2, which was much larger than the value for the analogous linear polymer. The scaling relations of the various characteristic radii (Rg, Rh, RT, and Rη) with molecular weight all had exponents less than 0.5 that agreed with the theoretical predictions for hyperbranched polymers. The exponent for Rg was interpreted as fractal dimension and had a value of 2.38 ± 0.25, a value that is of the same order as that anticipated by theory for branched polymers in theta conditions and certainly not approaching the value of 3 that would be associated with the spherical morphology and uniform segment density distribution of dendrimers. Second virial coefficients from light scattering are positive, but the variation of the interpenetration function, ψ, with molecular weight and the friction coefficient, ko, obtained from the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient suggests that chloroform is not a particularly good solvent for the hyperbranched polyester and that the molecules are soft and penetrable with little spherical nature. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The nonlinear optical property of new polyester has been studied via second harmonic generation (SHG). The values of electro‐optic coefficients, d33 and d31, of the poled polymer film were 3.15 × 10 ?7 and 1.5 × 10?7 esu, respectively. Thermal behavior of this polyester was studied through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). 4‐di‐(2′‐hydroxyethoxy)‐4‐diphenyl‐hydrazonomethyl was synthesized from the reaction of 3,4‐dihydroxy‐4‐diphenyl‐hydrazonomethyl with 2–chloro–1‐ethanol in a 1:2 mole ratio and subsequently reacted with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) in the presence of pyridine, as catalyst, to produce the new nonlinear polyester. The chemical structures of the resulting monomers and polymer were characterized by CHN analysis, 1H‐NMR, FT‐IR, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, according to the concept of “suitable isolation group,” six new AB2‐type polytriazoles containing azo‐chromophore moieties, derived from the same hyperbranched polymer intermediate, were successfully prepared through click reaction under copper(I) catalysis by modifying the synthetic route, in which different isolation groups in different size were introduced to the periphery of the hyperbranched polymers as end‐capping moieties. With the different end‐capping groups, these hyperbranched polymers, P1 – P6 , exhibited different solubility and processability; also, their nonlinear optical properties were modified accordingly, realizing the adjustment of the properties of hyperbranched polymers through the structural design. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Starting from 3,5‐diamino benzoic acid, 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzyl ether, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with flexible ether group, and 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzoate, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with ester group, were synthesized for the first time. Using the same starting compound, 3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}benzylalcohol, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer, was synthesized through a highly efficient short‐cut route. Step‐growth polymerization of these monomers at individually optimized experimental conditions results in the formation of hyperbranched polyurethanes with and without ether and ester groups. Copolymerizations of these monomers with functionally similar AB monomers were also carried out. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined using GPC and the values (Mw) were found to vary from 1.5 × 104 to 1.2 × 106. While hyperbranched polyurethanes having no ether or ester group were found to be thermally stable up to 217 °C, hyperbranched poly(ether–urethane)s and poly(ester–urethane)s were found to be thermally stable up to 245 and 300 °C, respectively. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of polyurethane was reduced significantly when introducing ether groups into the polymer chain, whereas Tg was not observed even up to 250 °C in the case of poly(ester–urethane). Hyperbranched polyurethanes derived from all the three different AB2 monomers were soluble in highly polar solvents and the copolymers showed improved solubility. Polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether of molecular weight 550 and decanol were used as end‐capping groups, which were seen to affect the thermal, solution, and solubility properties of polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To investigate the dendritic structure effects on the electro‐optical (EO) coefficients and thermal stability of the nonlinear optical (NLO) active materials, a bifunctional compound, IDD (4‐isocyanato‐4′(3,3‐dimethyl‐ 2,4‐dioxo‐acetidino)‐diphenylmethane) was used as a building block to synthesize a series of novel NLO chromophore‐containing dendritic structures including Generation 0.5 (G0.5) to Generation 3 (G3). The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of G1–G3 dendrons were in the range of 76–116°C, whereas only the G0.5 dendron exhibited a melting temperature (Tm), 98°C. Moreover, a series of NLO‐active guest–host systems ranging from polyimide‐G0.5 (PI‐G0.5) to polyimide‐G3 (PI‐G3) were prepared by blending 20 wt% chromophore‐containing dendron with a high Tg polyimide. EO coefficients ranged from 6.1 to 12.9 pm/V. The r33/dye content ratio increased with increasing generation of dendron‐containing polyimide samples. Particularly, the improvement in r33/dye content ratio of PI‐G2.5 sample tripled as compared to that of the guest–host sample with Disperse Red 1. Excellent temporal stability of PI‐G0.5 and PI‐G1.5 at 80°C was obtained. Moreover, waveguide properties for NLO polymers containing higher generation dendrons (3.1–3.6 dB/cm at 830 nm) were also obtained. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Three novel nonlinear optical polyarylate polymers were prepared containing one main-chain polymer (mPAR-chr1) and two side-chain polymers (sPAR-chr1, sPAR-chr2) with different kinds of chromophores. The obtained polymers were characterized and evaluated by UV-Vis, 1H NMR, DSC and TGA. All the polymers exhibited excellent thermal stability, film forming ability and good electro-optic (EO) activity. The relationship between EO coefficients (r 33) and the chromophore concentration of the three polymers had been also characterized and discussed. There were no obvious differences found in EO activity between main-chain and side-chain polyarylates with the same chromophore (chr1). Due to the stronger electron-withdrawing tricyanopyrroline acceptor and the steric effect of the large dendritic groups of chromophore 2 (chr2), polymer sPAR-chr2 showed the largest EO cofficients (64 pm V?1) in these new polymers.  相似文献

A new hyperbranched polymeric structure was chosen as a nonlinear optical material. First, a difunctional chromophore, 4-(4′-nitrophenyl-diazenyl) phenyl-1,3-diamine (NDPD) was synthesized, which was then reacted with 4-isocyanato-4′(3,3-dimethyl-2,4-dioxo-azetidino)diphenylmethane (MIA) to form NDPDMIA (A2 type monomer). The azetidin-2,4-dione functional groups exhibit selective reactivity, which can react only with primary amines under mild conditions. The hyperbranched polymers were synthesized via ring-opening addition reaction between azetidine-2,4-dione (A2 type monomer) and primary amine (B3 type monomer). This synthetic scheme comes with easy purification, high yield and rapid synthesis. Chemical structures of the hyperbranched polymers were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. The inherent viscosity of hyperbranched polymers in DMSO ranged from 0.15 to 0.22 dLg−1. All of the obtained polymers were soluble in DMF, DMAc, and DMSO. Using in situ contact poling, r33 coefficients of 6-16 pm/V and their temporal stability at 60 °C were obtained. Optical loss measurement was also achieved by a prism coupling setup.  相似文献

Second-order non-linear optical polymers having photocrosslinkable moieties were synthesized by cationic polymerization of monomer (I) and monomer (II). The polymerization proceeded rapidly to give linear polymers in high yields. Monomer reactivity ratios were calculated to be r1 = 0.90 and r2 = 0.96 (r1r2 = 0.86), indicating that these monomers copolymerized through the almost ideal copolymerization mechanism. The photocrosslinking reaction of an equimolar copolymer film underwent the conversion of up to ca. 70% upon irradiation with a 500 W high-presure mercury lamp for 5 min. The electric field induced polar orientation of the chromophores (pendant 4-nitrophenyloxy groups) in a photocrosslinked polymer was stable for more than 10 days. This polymer exhibits a nonlinear coefficient d33 of 5.6 × 10-10 esu measured at a pumping wavelength of 1064 nm.  相似文献

A series of conjugated hyperbranched polymers, hyperbranched copolymers, and linear polymers containing 2‐pyran‐4‐ylidenemalononitrile (acceptor) and triphenylamine/fluorene (donor) units were synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, thermogravimetric analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, UV–visible, photoluminescence, and cyclic voltammetry measurements. All the polymers show red‐light emission in the range of 566–656 nm both in solution and in solid state. The quantum efficiency of the polymers was in the range of 56–82%. Among the six polymers synthesized, only polymers containing fluorene units show Tg and polymers based on triphenylamine not exhibit Tg. The band gap of these polymers were found to be reasonably low; hyperbranched copolymer containing fluorene unit shows lowest band gap of 2.18 eV due to the stabilization of LUMO energy level by the electron withdrawing ? CN groups. The thermal and solubility behavior of the polymers were found to be good. All the EL spectra of the devices (indium‐tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/polymer/2,9‐dimethyl‐4,7‐diphenyl‐1,10‐phenanthroline/tris(8‐hydroxyquinoline)aluminum)/LiF/Al) show red‐light emission, and the device fabricated with P3 and P4 shows maximum luminance and luminous efficiency of 4104 cd m?2 and 0.55 cd Å?1 and 3696 cd m?2 and 0.47 cd Å?1, respectively, indicates that they had the best carrier balance. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
