A series of well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers bearing hydrophobic poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) backbone and hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)] (PPEGMEMA) side chains were synthesized by sequential reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) without any polymeric functional group transformation. A new Br‐containing acrylate monomer, tert‐butyl 2‐((2‐bromoisobutanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate (tBBIBMA), was first prepared, which can be homopolymerized by RAFT to give a well‐defined PtBBIBMA homopolymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.15). This homopolymer with pendant Br initiation group in every repeating unit initiated SET‐LRP of PEGMEMA at 45 °C using CuBr/dHbpy as catalytic system to afford well‐defined PtBBIBMA‐g‐PPEGMEMA graft copolymers via the grafting‐from strategy. The self‐assembly behavior of the obtained graft copolymers in aqueous media was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and TEM. These copolymers were found to be stimuli‐responsive to both temperature and ions. Finally, poly(acrylic acid)‐g‐PPEGMEMA double hydrophilic graft copolymers were obtained by selective acidic hydrolysis of hydrophobic PtBA backbone while PPEGMEMA side chains kept inert. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐ and temperature‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐block?4‐vinylbenzoic acid) (poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA)) diblock copolymer brushes on silicon wafers have been successfully prepared by combining click reaction, single‐electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Azide‐terminated poly(NIPAAm) brushes were obtained by SET‐LRP followed by reaction with sodium azide. A click reaction was utilized to exchange the azide end group of a poly(NIPAAm) brushes to form a surface‐immobilized macro‐RAFT agent, which was successfully chain extended via RAFT polymerization to produce poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes. The addition of sacrificial initiator and/or chain‐transfer agent permitted the formation of well‐defined diblock copolymer brushes and free polymer chains in solution. The free polymer chains were isolated and used to estimate the molecular weights and polydispersity index of chains attached to the surface. Ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the immobilization of initiator on the silicon wafer, poly(NIPAAm) brush formation via SET‐LRP, click reaction, and poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush formation via RAFT polymerization. The poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes demonstrate stimuli‐responsive behavior with respect to pH and temperature. The swollen brush thickness of poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush increases with increasing pH, and decreases with increasing temperature. These results can provide guidance for the design of smart materials based on copolymer brushes. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013, 51, 2677–2685  相似文献

Amphiphilic poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly[(methacrylate‐graft‐poly(ethylene oxide))‐co‐6‐O‐methacryloyl‐D ‐galactopyranose] (PCL‐b‐P(MAPEO‐co‐GaMa)) with various compositions and molecular weights were synthesized via a controlled four‐step strategy. The first step involves the synthesis of functionalized poly(ε‐caprolactone) macroinitiator by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone (CL) as initiated by aluminum triisopropoxide (Al(OiPr)3). After selective bromination of the hydroxyl end‐group of the resulting α‐isopropoxy, ω‐hydroxy poly(ε‐caprolactone) by using 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, the controlled radical copolymerization of α‐methoxy, ω‐methacrylate poly(ethylene oxide) (MAPEO) with 6‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2;3,4‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D ‐galactopyranose (DIGaMa) was performed by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in THF at 60 °C using CuBr ligated with 1,1,4,7,10,10 hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (HMTETA) as catalytic complex. In the final step, isopropylidene protective functions were selectively removed using an aqueous formic acid solution leading to the expected amphiphilic graft copolymers. The molecular characterization of those copolymers was performed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis. The self‐assembly of the copolymers into micellar aggregates as well as the related critical micellization concentration (CMC) in aqueous media were determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. In parallel, the morphology of the solid deposits of micellar aggregates was examined with atomic force microscopy (AFM). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers containing poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and poly[poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGEEMA) side chains were synthesized by the combination of single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained comb copolymer was treated with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. Finally, PPEGMEA‐g‐PPEGEEMA graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP of poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate macromonomer using PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator via the grafting‐from route. The molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.20). This kind of double hydrophilic copolymer was found to be stimuli‐responsive to both temperature and ion (0.3 M Cl? and SO). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers containing poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) (PPEGMEA) backbone and poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP) side chains were synthesized by successive single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained homopolymer then reacted with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐chloropropionyl chloride at ?78 °C to afford PPEGMEA‐Cl macroinitiator. poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate)‐g‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) double hydrophilic graft copolymers were finally synthesized by. ATRP of 2‐vinylpyridine initiated by PPEGMEA‐Cl macroinitiator at 25 °C using CuCl/hexamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system via the grafting‐ from strategy. The molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept relatively narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.40). pH‐Responsive micellization behavior was investigated by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy and this kind of double hydrophilic graft copolymer aggregated to form micelles with P2VP‐core while pH of the aqueous solution was above 5.0. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel aromatic acetal‐based acid‐labile monomer 2‐phenyl‐5‐ethyl‐5‐acryloxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxacyclohexane (HEDPA) was synthesized and polymerized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using alkynyl functional chain transfer agent (CTA‐Alk). Afterward, a series of amphiphilic diblock copolymers composed of fixed hydrophobic poly(2‐phenyl‐5‐ethyl‐5‐acryloxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxacyclohexane) (PDAEP) segments and various lengths of hydrophilic mPEG segments were prepared through click reaction between alkynyl‐terminated PDAEP and azido‐terminated mPEG. The self‐assembly behaviors of the diblock copolymers were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, and 1H NMR. These results indicated that the diblock copolymers could self‐assemble into nano‐sized micelles with PDAEP cores and PEG coronas in aqueous solution. DLS, fluorescence spectroscopy and UV–vis spectroscopy were used to monitor the pH‐triggered assembly/disassembly transition of the micelles. These results showed that the assembly/disassembly transition behaviors of the diblock copolymers micelles can be adjusted by changing the lengths of the mPEG segments. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis and investigation of a new type of photoresponsive block copolymers (BCPs). They were designed to comprise two water‐soluble polymers containing two different photoisomerizable moieties (either azobenzene and spiropyran or two different azobenzenes), with the two constituting blocks that, when separated, exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water and can shift their LCST in opposite directions upon photoisomerization (decrease of LCST for one polymer and increase for the other). A variety of such doubly photoresponsive BCPs were synthesized using either azobenzene‐ or spiropyran‐containing poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA), poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly[methoxydi(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] (PDEGMMA). Their thermal phase transition behaviors in aqueous solution before and after simultaneous photoreactions on the two blocks were investigated in comparison with their constituting blocks, by means of solution transmittance (turbidity) and variable‐temperature 1H NMR measurements. The results show that BCPs displayed a single LCST whose shift upon two photoisomerizations appeared to be determined by the competing and opposing photoinduced effects on the two blocks. Moreover, optically controlling the relative photoisomerization degrees of trans azobenzene‐to‐cis azobenzene and spiropyran‐to‐merocyanine could be used to tune the LCST of BCP solution. This study demonstrates the potential of exploring a more complex photoreaction scheme to optically control the solution properties of water‐soluble thermosensitive BCPs. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a thermo responsive polymer was achieved via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and surface initiated single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP). In this procedure, CNTs were first coated with polydopamine (PDA) through self polymerization under a rather mild condition. And then PDA functionalized CNTs bearing with amino and hydroxyl groups were further reacted with bromo isobutyryl bromide. Finally, a thermo responsive polymer poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was introduced on the CNTs via SET‐LRP. The successful surface modification of CNT‐PDA‐PNIPAM was evidenced by a series of characterization techniques. The resulting CNT‐PDA‐PNIPAM showed significant enhancement of dispersibility in both aqueous and organic solvents. More importantly, these CNT‐polymer nanocomposites showed obvious thermo responsive behavior due to the surface coating CNTs with PNIPAM. As compared with previous methods, this method is not required oxidation of CNTs to introduce funcitonal groups for immobilization of the polymerization initiators. More importantly, this method could also be utilized for fabricating many other polymer nanocomposites because of the strong and universal adhesive of PDA to various materials. It is therefore, the novel strategy via marrying mussel inspired chemistry with SET‐LRP should be a simple, general and effective method for surface functionalization. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Alcohols are known to promote the disproportionation of Cu(I)X species into nascent Cu(0) and Cu(II)X. Therefore, alcohols are expected to be excellent solvents that facilitate the single‐electron transfer mediated living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) mediated by nascent Cu(0) species. This publication demonstrates the ultrafast SET‐LRP of methyl acrylate initiated with bis(2‐bromopropionyloxy)ethane and catalyzed by Cu(0)/Me6‐TREN in methanol, ethanol, 1‐propanol, and tert‐butanol and in their mixture with water at 25 °C. The structural analysis of the resulting polymers by a combination of 1H NMR and MALDI‐TOF MS demonstrates the synthesis of perfectly bifunctional α,ω‐dibromo poly(methyl acrylate)s by SET‐LRP in alcohols. Moreover, this work provides an expansion of the list of solvents available for SET‐LRP. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 2745–2754, 2008  相似文献

A mild and efficient strategy is presented for growing thermo‐sensitive polymers directly from the surface of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO). This method involves the covalent attachment of Br‐containing initiating groups onto the surface of GO sheets followed by in situ growing poly[poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGEEMA) via single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP). Considering the lack of reactive functional groups on the surface of GO, exfoliated GO sheets were subjected to an epoxide ring opening reaction with tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (TRIS) at room temperature. The initiating groups were grafted onto TRIS‐GO sheets by treating hydroxyls with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide at room temperature. PPEGEEMA chains were synthesized by in situ SET‐LRP using CuBr/Me6TREN as catalytic system at 40 °C in H2O/THF. The resulting materials were characterized using a range of testing techniques and it was proved that polymer chains were successfully introduced to the surface of GO sheets. After grafting with PPEGEEMA, the modified GO sheets still maintained the separated single layers and the dispersibility was significantly improved. This TRIS‐GO‐PPEGEEMA hybrid material shows reversible self‐assembly and deassembly in water by switching temperature at about 34 °C. Such smart graphene‐based materials promise important potential applications in thermally responsive nanodevices and microfluidic switches. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The new SET‐LRP (using Cu(0) powder for organic synthesis) was successfully used to produce well‐defined linear and star homo‐ and diblock‐copolymers of PMA, PSA, and P(MA‐b‐GA)n (where n = 1 or 4). The kinetic data showed that all SET‐LRP were first order and reached high conversions in a short period of time. The other advantage of using such a system is that the copper can easily be removed through filtration, allowing the production of highly pure polymer. The molecular weight distributions were well controlled with polydispersity indexes below 1.1 and the number‐average molecular weight close to theory, especially upon the addition of Cu(II)Br2/Me6‐TREN complex. The linear and star block copolymers were then hydrolyzed to produce the biocompatible amphiphilic P(MA‐b‐GA)n, where the glycerol side‐groups make the outer block hydrophilic. These blocks were micellized into water and found to have a Rg/RH equal to 0.8 and 1.59 for the liner and star blocks, respectively. This together with the TEM's supported that the linear blocks formed the classical core‐shell micelles, where as, the star blocks formed vesicles. We found direct support for the vesicle structure from a TEM where one vesicle squashed a second vesicle consistent with a hollow structure. Such vesicle structures have potential applications as delivery nanoscaled devices for drugs and other important biomolecules. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) provides an excellent tool for the straightforward synthesis of well‐defined macromolecules. Heterogeneous Cu(0)‐ catalysis is employed to synthesize a novel photoresist material with high control over the molecular architecture. Poly(γ‐butyrolactone methacrylate)‐co‐(methyladamantly methacrylate) was synthesized. Kinetic experiments were conducted demonstrating that both monomers, γ‐butyrolactone methacrylate (GBLMA) and methyl adamantly methacrylate (MAMA), are successfully homopolymerized. In both cases polymerization kinetic is of first order and the molecular weights increase linearly with conversion. The choice of a proper solvent was decisive for the SET‐LRP process and organic solvent mixtures were found to be most suitable. Also, the kinetic of the copolymerization of GBLMA and MAMA was investigated. Following first order kinetics in overall monomer consumption and exhibiting a linear relationship between molecular weights and conversion a “living” process was established. This allowed for the straightforward synthesis of well‐defined photoresist polymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2251–2255, 2010  相似文献

A well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymer, poly(6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadien‐4‐ol)‐g‐poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PMHDO‐g‐PDMAEMA), has been synthesized by the combination of living coordination polymerization, single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), and the grafting‐from strategy. PMHDO backbone containing double bonds and pendant hydroxyls was first prepared by [(η3‐allyl)NiOCOCF3]2‐initiated living coordination polymerization of 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadien‐4‐ol (MHDO) followed by treating the pendant hydroxyls with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride to give PMHDO‐Cl macroinitiator. SET‐LRP of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was performed in THF/H2O using PMHDO‐Cl as macroinitiator and CuCl/Me6TREN as catalytic system to afford the well‐defined PMHDO‐g‐PDMAEMA graft copolymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.28). The grafting density was as high as 92%. High performance polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was prepared with Mg powder as both reducing agent (RA) and supplemental activator (SA) by single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (RASA SET‐LRP). First‐order kinetics of polymerization with respect to monomer concentration, linear increase of molecular weight, and narrow polydispersity with monomer conversion, and the obtained high isotacticity PAN indicate that RASA SET‐LRP in the presence of Mg powder could simultaneously control molecular weight and tacticity of PAN. compared with that obtained with ascorbic acid (VC) as RA, an obvious increase in isotacticity of PAN was observed. the block copolymer pan‐b‐pAN with molecular weight at 112,460, polydispersity at 1.33, and isotacticity at 0.314 was successfully prepared. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single Electron Transfer‐Living Radical Polymerization (SET‐LRP) represents a robust and versatile method for the rapid synthesis of macromolecules with well defined topology. In SET‐LRP, certain combinations of solvents and ligands facilitate the disproportionation of in situ generated Cu(I) species into “nascent” Cu(0) and Cu(II) species. A combination of heterogeneous and “nascent” Cu(0) activation yields polymers with very high chain end functionality. Under suitable conditions the tolerance toward oxygen must be increased since Cu(0), the activator in SET‐LRP, acts as an oxygen scavenger in all inert gas purification systems. Here we demonstrate that SET‐LRP of methyl acrylate can be conducted in the presence of air. The addition of a small amount of reducing agent hydrazine hydrate to the reaction mixture reduces Cu2O generated by the oxidation of Cu(0) with air, regenerating Cu(0) and allowing for the synthesis of polymers with predictable molecular weight and perfect retention of chain end functionality. The kinetics plots obtained under these conditions were identical to these generated by degassed samples. High conversions were achieved within a very short reaction time. In these SET‐LRP experiments, the reagents were not deoxygenated or subjected to standard degassing procedures such as freeze‐pump‐thaw or nitrogen sparging. This simple SET‐LRP procedure provides an efficient and economical approach to the synthesis of functional macromolecules. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of polyallene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, poly(6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol)‐g‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEMA), was synthesized through the grafting‐from technique. First, double‐bond‐containing PMHDO backbone bearing pendant hydroxyls was prepared via [(η3‐allyl)NiOCOCF3]2‐initiated living coordination polymerization of 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol (MHDO). The pendant hydroxyls in the homopolymer were then reacted with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride to give PMHDO‐Cl macroinitiator. Finally, hydrophilic PDEAEMA side chains were formed by single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) in THF/H2O initiated by the macroinitiator using CuCl/Me6TREN as catalytic system to afford PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEMA graft copolymers. The narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.35) and kinetics experiment showed the controllability of SET‐LRP graft copolymerization of DEAEMA. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEMA amphiphilic graft copolymer in aqueous media was determined by fluorescence probe technique and the relationships between cmc and pH or salinity were also investigated. Micellar morphologies were preliminarily explored using transmission electron microscopy. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

Novel AB2‐type amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), PEG‐b‐(PNIPAM)2, were successfully synthesized through single‐electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP). A difunctional macroinitiator was prepared by esterification of 2,2‐dichloroacetyl chloride with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEG). The copolymers were obtained via the SET‐LRP of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) with CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine (Me6TREN) as catalytic system and DMF/H2O (v/v = 3:1) mixture as solvent. The resulting copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. These block copolymers show controllable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI < 1.15). Their phase transition temperatures and the corresponding enthalpy changes in aqueous solution were measured by differential scanning calorimetry. As a result, the phase transition temperature of PEG44b‐(PNIPAM55)2 is similar to that in the case of PEG44b‐PNIPAM110; however, the corresponding enthalpy change is much lower, indicating the significant influence of the macromolecular architecture on the phase transition. This is the first study into the effect of macromolecular architecture on the phase transition using AB2‐type amphiphilic block copolymer composed of PEG and PNIPAM. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study synthesized thermo‐sensitive amphiphilic block‐graft PNiPAAm‐b‐(PαN3CL‐g‐alkyne) copolymers through ring‐opening polymerization of α‐chloro‐ε‐caprolactone (αClCL) with hydroxyl‐terminated macroinitiator poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm), substituting pendent chlorides with sodium azide. This was then used to graft various kinds of terminal alkynes moieties by means of the copper‐catalyzed Huisgen's 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition (“click” reaction). 1H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to characterize these copolymers. The solubility of the block‐graft copolymers in aqueous media was investigated using turbidity measurement, revealing a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in the polymers. These solutions showed reversible changes in optical properties: transparent below the LCST, and opaque above the LCST. The LCST values were dependant on the composition of the polymer. With critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range of 2.04–9.77 mg L?1, the block copolymers formed micelles in the aqueous phase, owing to their amphiphilic characteristics. An increase in the length of hydrophobic segments or a decrease in the length of hydrophilic segments amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers produced lower CMC values. The research verified the core‐shell structure of micelles by 1H NMR analyses in D2O. Transmission electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphology of the micelles, revealing a spherical structure. The average size of the micelles was in the range of 75–145 nm (blank), and 105–190 nm (with drug). High drug entrapment efficiency and drug loading content were observed in the drug micelles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献
