A study of the photoinitiated and thermally initiated cationic polymerizations of several monomer systems with S,S‐dialkyl‐S‐(3,5‐dimethylhydroxyphenyl)sulfonium salt (HPS) photoinitiators bearing different lengths of alkyl chains on the positively charged sulfur atom has been conducted. HPS photoinitiators are capable of photoinitiating the cationic polymerization of a wide variety of epoxy and vinyl ether monomers directly on irradiation with short‐wavelength UV light. Aryl ketone photosensitizers are effective in extending the spectral response of these photoinitiators into the long‐wavelength UV region. Kinetic studies with real‐time infrared spectroscopy show that HPS photoinitiators exhibit good efficiency in the polymerization of epoxide and vinyl ether monomers. Comparative studies also demonstrate that S,S‐dimethyl‐S‐(3,5‐dimethyl‐2‐hydroxyphenyl)sulfonium salts are more active photoinitiators than their isomeric S,S‐dimethyl‐S‐(3,5‐dimethyl‐4‐hydroxyphenyl)sulfonium salt counterparts. Both types of HPS photoinitiators display reversible photolysis as a result of facile termination reactions that take place between the growing chains ends with the photogenerated sulfur ylides. Preliminary studies have shown that HPS photoinitiators can also be employed as thermal initiators for the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of epoxides at moderate temperatures. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phenothiazine compounds bearing a wide range of different substituents are excellent photosensitizers for onium salt cationic photoinitiators. These photosensitizers are generally operative in the mid‐ and long‐range regions of the UV spectrum and are especially useful for enhancing the rate of photoinitiated cationic polymerization carried out utilizing both filtered and broadband UV emission sources. In this article, the syntheses of several different substituted phenothiazines are described and the ability of these compounds to photosensitize the photolysis of different onium salt photoinitiators is evaluated. Attempts were made to correlate the structure and spectral characteristics of the phenothiazines with their efficiency of photosensitization in the cationic photopolymerizations of several typical epoxide and vinyl ether monomers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of epoxy alcohols were prepared by simple, straightforward methods. These compounds were very reactive monomers that polymerized rapidly on UV irradiation in the presence of cationic photoinitiators. The kinetics of the cationic photopolymerization of these monomers were studied with diaryliodonium salt photoinitiators and real‐time IR spectroscopy. The rate of epoxide ring‐opening polymerization was enhanced markedly by the presence of the hydroxy group. Using model compounds, the monomers were shown to polymerize via an activated monomer mechanism. Simple epoxy alcohols polymerized to give polymers with a hyperbranched structure. The novel monomers also were observed to accelerate the rate of the photopolymerization of mono‐ and multifunctional epoxides. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A kinetic study was conducted of the independent photoinitiated cationic polymerization of a number of epoxide monomers and mixtures of these monomers with N‐vinylcarbazole. The results show that these two different classes of monomers undergo complex synergistic interactions with one another during polymerization. It was demonstrated that N‐vinylcarbazole as well as other carbazoles are efficient photosensitizers for the photolysis of both diaryliodonium and triarylsulfonium salt photoinitiators. In the presence of large amounts of N‐vinylcarbazole, the rates of the cationic ring‐opening photopolymerization of epoxides are markedly accelerated. This effect has been ascribed to a photoinitiated free‐radical chain reaction that results in the oxidation of monomeric and polymeric N‐vinylcarbazole radicals by the onium salt photoinitiators to generate cations. These cations can initiate the ring‐opening polymerization of the epoxides, leading to the production of copolymers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new system for efficiently carrying out cationic photopolymerizations with visible and long‐wavelength UV light is described. This system is based on the principle that certain onium salt cationic photoinitiators can be reduced by free radicals produced by the hydrogen abstraction reactions of photoexcited ketones. Thus, when camphorquinone, benzil, 2‐isopropylthioxanthone, and 2‐ethylanthraquinone are irradiated in the presence of a monomer that can serve as a hydrogen donor, the resulting monomer‐bound radical rapidly reduces a diaryliodonium salt or a dialkylphenacylsulfonium salt, and the resulting monomer‐centered cations initiate the polymerizations of epoxides, vinyl ethers, and heterocyclic compounds. Onium salts with high reduction potentials, such as triarylsulfonium salts, do not undergo sensitization by this new system. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Isoquinolinone derivatives bearing amino‐ or nitro‐ substituent (IQNs) have been synthesized as photoinitiators and combined with various additives (i.e., iodonium salt, N‐vinylcarbazole, amine or 2,4,6‐tris(trichloromethyl)?1,3,5‐triazine) to initiate ring‐opening cationic polymerizations (CP) or free radical polymerizations under exposure to visible LEDs (e.g., LEDs at 405 nm or 455 nm, or cold white LED) or a halogen lamp. Compared to the well‐known camphorquinone‐based systems, the novel IQNs‐based combinations employed here demonstrate higher efficiencies for the CP of epoxides. The photochemically generated reactive species (i.e., cations and radicals) from the IQNs‐based systems have been investigated by steady state photolysis, cyclic voltammetry, fluorescence, laser flash photolysis, and electron spin resonance spin trapping techniques. The structure/reactivity/photoinitiating ability relationships of IQNs‐based combinations are also discussed; the crucial role of the excited state lifetimes of the photoinitiators to ensure efficient quenching by additives is clearly underlined. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two D‐π‐A‐type 2,2,2‐trifluoroacetophenone derivatives, namely, 4′‐(4‐( N,N‐diphenyl)amino‐phenyl)‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroacetophenone (PI‐Ben) and 4′‐(4‐(7‐(N,N‐diphenylamino)‐9,9‐dimethyl‐9H‐fluoren‐2‐yl)‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroacetophenone (PI‐Flu), are developed as high‐performance photoinitiators combined with an amine or an iodonium salt for both the free‐radical polymerization of acrylates and the cationic polymerization of epoxides and vinyl ether upon exposure to near‐UV and visible light‐emitting diodes (LEDs; e.g., 365, 385, 405, and 450 nm). The photochemical mechanisms are investigated by UV‐Vis spectra, molecular‐orbital calculations, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, photolysis, and electron‐spin‐resonance spin‐trapping techniques. Compared with 2,2,2‐trifluoroacetophenone, both photoinitiators exhibit larger redshift of the absorption spectra and higher molar‐extinction coefficients. PI‐Ben and PI‐Flu themselves can produce free radicals to initiate the polymerization of acrylate without any added hydrogen donor. These novel D‐π‐A type trifluoroacetophenone‐based photoinitiating systems exhibit good efficiencies (acrylate conversion = 48%–66%; epoxide conversion = 85%–95%; LEDs at 365–450 nm exposure) even in low‐concentration initiators (0.5%, w/w) and very low curing light intensities (1–2 mW cm?2). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new, simplified method has been developed for the synthesis of S,S‐dialkyl‐S‐(dimethylhydroxyphenyl)sulfonium salt cationic photoinitiators. This novel method has successfully been used for the preparation of S,S‐dialkyl‐S‐(3,5‐dimethyl‐4‐hydroxyphenyl)sulfonium and S,S‐dialkyl‐S‐(3,5‐dimethyl‐2‐hydroxyphenyl)sulfonium salts showing a wide variation in the length and structure of the alkyl chains on the positively charged sulfur atom. These photoinitiators can also be prepared with a wide variety of different anions. The manipulation of the lengths of the alkyl chains permits the design of compatible photoinitiators for highly nonpolar monomers and oligomers such as epoxy‐functional silicones, epoxidized polybutadiene, and epoxidized vegetable oils. This article describes the synthesis and characterization of these photoinitiators. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 2556–2569, 2003  相似文献

The simultaneous photoinitiated cationic polymerizations of epoxides and vinyl ethers in the presence of diaryliodonium salt photoinitiators results in an acceleration of the ring‐opening epoxide polymerization and a deceleration of the vinyl ether polymerization. These effects are seen both in mixtures of the two monofunctional monomers as well as in hybrid monomers which bear vinyl ether and epoxide groups in the same molecule. A combination of two mechanisms have been proposed to account for these effects. The reversible conversion of alkoxycarbenium to oxiranium ions results in a two‐stage reaction in which first, the epoxide, then the vinyl ether polymerization takes place. Free radical chain induced decomposition of the diaryliodonium salt produces a large incremental number of carbenium ion species which results in the acceleration effect.  相似文献

This article reports the use of a quinoxaline derivative as a photosensitizer for diaryliodonium salt photoinitiators. 2,3‐bis(3,4‐bis(decyloxy)phenyl)‐5,8‐bis(2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)quinoxaline (DOPEQ), is a highly conjugated compound with strong absorption bands at wavelengths ranging from 300 to 550 nm and is shown to facilitate photoinitiated cationic polymerization of heterocyclic monomers such as oxiranes and oxetanes. The polymerizations are initiated at room temperature by using long wavelength UV light in the presence of diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (Ph2I+PF). The polymerizations are monitored by optical pyrometry (OP). It is also possible to initiate photopolymerizations with ambient solar irradiation in the presence of this photosensitizer dye. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 5‐Arylthianthrenium salts are a class of efficient triarylsulfonium salt photoinitiators for cationic polymerization. These compounds were prepared by a simple, straightforward, versatile, and high yield route. The new photoinitiators were characterized by standard analytical and spectroscopic techniques, and their activity as cationic photoinitiators was compared with related triarylsulfonium salts of similar structures using Fourier transform real‐time infrared spectroscopy. Through the use of electron‐transfer photosensitizers, the response of these photoinitiators can be readily spectrally broadened into the long‐wavelength UV–visible regions of the spectrum. The results obtained suggest that 5‐arylthianthrenium salts are potential replacements for now available triarysulfonium salt photoinitiators in many applications. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Curcumin, a naturally occurring, intensely yellow dye extracted from the spice turmeric, is an efficient photosensitizer for diaryliodonium salt photoinitiators at wavelengths ranging from 340 to 535 nm. With curcumin as a photosensitizer, it is possible to carry out the cationic photopolymerization of a wide variety of epoxide, oxetane, and vinyl monomers with long‐wavelength UV and visible light. An example of the photopolymerization of an epoxide monomer with ambient solar irradiation is provided. Several other curcumin analogues were synthesized, and their use as photosensitizers is examined. With such photosensitizers, the range of spectral sensitivity can be extended well into the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Starting with nopol [(R)‐(−)‐2‐(2′‐hydroxyethyl)‐6,6‐dimethyl‐8‐oxatricyclo[3.1.1.12,3]octane, I] as a substrate, two new, interesting monomers, allyl nopol ether epoxide III and nopol 1‐propenyl ether epoxide IV, were prepared. The photoinitiated cationic polymerizations of these two monomers as well as several other model compounds were studied using real‐time infrared spectroscopy. Surprisingly, the rates of epoxide ring‐opening polymerization of both monomers were enhanced as compared to those of the model compounds. Two different mechanisms which involve the free radical induced decomposition of the diaryliodonium salt photoinitiator were proposed to explain the rate acceleration effects. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The story of the discovery and development of onium salt photoinitiators for cationic polymerization is chronicled. The chemistry of the synthesis of these compounds is outlined, and the mechanisms of their initiation are discussed briefly. Among the most useful of these types of photoinitiators are diaryliodonium and triarylsulfonium salts, which are used widely for photoinduced cationic crosslinking reactions. From the very beginning, onium salt photoinitiated cationic polymerizations have found use in a multitude of practical applications. Specifically discussed in this article are the use of onium salts in coatings, adhesives, printing inks, release coatings, stereolithography, holographic recording, photocurable composites, and microelectronic photoresists. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The use of two dibenzo[a,c]phenazine derivatives, 10,13‐bis(2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)dibenzo[a,c]phenazine and 10,13‐bis(4‐hexylthiophen‐2‐yl)dibenzo[a,c]phenazine are reported as photosensitizers for diaryliodonium salt photoinitiators. Novel dyes based on the dibenzo[a,c]phenazine skeleton are shown to be efficient in carrying out the cationic photopolymerizations. Representative examples of different types of monomers including epoxide, and vinyl monomers are polymerized in the presence of the photosensitizers and diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (Ph2I+PF). Polymerizations are initiated at room temperature using long wavelength UV and visible light, and monitored by optical pyrometry. The photopolymerization of an epoxide monomer via solar irradiation is also demonstrated. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

A few N‐alkoxypyridinium salts are developed as photoinitiators for efficient polymerization reactions. They are characterized by absorption properties below 300 nm, and generate alkoxy radicals on UV‐Vis light exposure. The squarylium dye was used as a blue‐light photosensitizer. Polymerization results are correlated with the photochemistry of N‐alkoxypyridinium salts. The quenching of the excited singlet state of squarylium dye by pyridinium salt and the formation of the semioxidized species of squaraine suggests an electron transfer from an excited dye to a coinitiator, and that the resulting oxygen‐centered radical initiates the polymerization process. The chemical mechanism was investigated by steady state photolysis and nanosecond laser flash photolysis experiments. Photoinitiating activity of new photoinitiators for initiation of polymerization of trimethylolpropane triacrylate in the UV‐blue light region was compared with photoinitiating ability of selected commercially available initiators. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polyaddition of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BPGE) with bis(4‐chlorophenyl) phenylphosphonate was carried out using quaternary onium salts or crown ether complexes as catalysts. When the polyaddition was performed using tetrabutylammonium chloride, tetrabutylphosphonium chloride, or 18‐crown‐6/KCl in N‐ methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone at 110°C for 48 h, the corresponding polyphosphonate with moderated molecular weights was obtained in 88–96% yields. The structure of the resulting polyphosphonate was confirmed by IR and 1H‐NMR spectra. The polyaddition of BPGE with various diaryl phosphonates also proceeded very smoothly to produce the corresponding polyphosphonates with moderate molecular weights. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Only one naphthalic anhydride derivative has been reported as light sensitive photoinitiator, this prompted us to further explore the possibility to prepare a new family of photoinitiators based on this scaffold. Therefore, eight naphthalic Naphthalic anhydride derivatives (ANH1‐ANH8) have been prepared and combined with an iodonium salt (and optionally N‐vinylcarbazole) or an amine (and optionally 2,4,6‐tris(trichloromethyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine) to initiate the cationic polymerization of epoxides and the free radical polymerization of acrylates under different irradiation sources, that is, very soft halogen lamp (~ 12 mW cm?2), laser diode at 405 nm (~1.5 mW cm?2) or blue LED centered at 455 nm (80 mW cm?2). The ANH6 based photoinitiating systems are particularly efficient for the cationic and the radical photopolymerizations, and even better than that of the well‐known camphorquinone based systems. The photochemical mechanisms associated with the chemical structure/photopolymerization efficiency relationships are studied by steady state photolysis, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, laser flash photolysis, and electron spin resonance spin‐trapping techniques. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several dyes have been discovered which sensitize the photolysis of diaryliodonium salts at visible wavelengths. By using the combination of a dye and a diaryliodonium salt, visible light can be used to photoinitiate cationic polymerization. In this article, the dye-sensitized photopolymerizations of cyclohexene oxide, epichlorohydrin, and 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether are described.  相似文献

Limonene 1,2‐oxide (LMO) and α‐pinene oxide (α‐PO) are two high reactivity biorenewable monomers that undergo facile photoinitiated cationic ring‐opening polymerizations using both diaryliodonium salt and triarylsufonium salt photoinitiators. Comparative studies showed that α‐PO is more reactive than LMO, and this is because it undergoes a simultaneous double ring‐opening reaction involving both the epoxide group and the cyclobutane ring. It was also observed that α‐PO also undergoes more undesirable side reactions than LMO. The greatest utility of these two monomers is projected to be as reactive diluents in crosslinking photocopolymerizations with multifunctional epoxide and oxetane monomers. Prototype copolymerization studies with several difunctional monomers showed that LMO and α‐PO were effective in increasing the reaction rates and shortening the induction periods of photopolymerizations of these monomers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
