We report the first synthesis of poly (N‐methylolacrylamide) (PNMA) via free‐radical frontal polymerization (FP) with solid monomers at ambient pressure. The appropriate amounts of reactants (N‐methylolacrylamide) (NMA) and initiator (ammonium persulfate) were mixed together at ambient temperature without solvent. FP was initiated by heating the wall of the tube with a soldering iron, and the resultant hot fronts were allowed to self‐propagate throughout the reaction vessel. Once initiated, no further energy was required for polymerization to occur. To suppress the fingers of molten monomer, a small amount of nanosilica was added. We also produced PNMA with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone, as solvent by FP, to study the macrokinetics in FP of PNMA without fillers. The front velocity and front temperature dependence on the ammonium persulfate and N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone concentration were investigated. The polymer was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis. Results show that without postpolymerization solvent removal, waste production can be reduced. Solvent‐free FP could be exploited as a means for preparation of PNMA with the potential advantage of higher throughput than solvent‐based methods. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Frontal polymerization (FP) has been successfully applied, for the first time, to obtain polymeric nanocomposites containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) in an amine‐cured epoxy matrix. Variations of maximum temperature (Tmax) and front velocity (Vf) have been studied. A comparison of these products with the corresponding materials, obtained by the classical batch polymerization technique, demonstrated that FP allows a higher degree of conversion than batch polymerization. The products have been characterized in terms of their thermal behavior with DSC analysis. SEM and X‐ray analyses revealed the morphology and the structures of the nanocomposites. The nanocomposites obtained by FP have the same characteristics of those synthesized, in much longer times, by batch polymerization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the first synthesis of poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) without solvent by free‐radical frontal polymerization (FP) at ambient pressure. In a typical run, the appropriate amounts of reactant (hydroxyethyl acrylate) and initiator (1,1‐di(tert‐butylperoxy)‐3,3,5‐trimethylcyclohexane) (Luperox 231) were mixed together at ambient pressure. FP was initiated by heating the wall of the tube with a soldering iron, and the resultant hot fronts were allowed to self‐propagate throughout the reaction vessel. Once initiated, no further energy was required for polymerization to occur. To study the macrokinetics, we also produced PHEA frontally with ammonium persulfate as initiator and dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent. The dependences of the front velocity and front temperature on the initiator concentration and reactant dilution were investigated. The front temperatures were between 124 and 157 °C, depending on the ammonium persulfate concentration. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that PHEA prepared by FP with ammonium persulfate as initiator had higher thermal stability than solvent‐free frontally prepared PHEA with Luperox 231 as initiator. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel approach of photo‐triggered redox frontal polymerization (FP) by integrating photocaged superbase (QA‐DBU) with a peroxide initiator (dibenzoyl peroxide, BPO) is presented for the synthesis of thermally sensitive materials. Under photo‐irradiation at a localized region, the regenerated superbase can diffuse into unirradiated regions and effectively actuate redox FP in a diffusion‐controlled manner. Moreover, the redox FP can be conducted at a much lower front temperature with enhanced front velocity. Astonishingly, the front temperature can be well‐modulated by changing the concentration of latent superbase. The prepared thermally sensitive fluorescent polymer composites exhibit enhanced fluorescence emission intensity compared to that of conventional thermal FP. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. In this work, a dually sensitive colloidal crystal (CC)‐loaded hydrogel has been synthesized via frontal polymerization (FP) in a facile and rapid way. First, a polystyrene CC film was fabricated by vertical deposition on the inner wall of a test tube. Then, a mixture of acrylic acid (AAc), 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and glycerol along with the initiator and crosslinker was added to this test tube to carry out FP, resulting in the formation of CC‐loaded hydrogel. The influence of the mass ratios of HEMA/AAc on front velocity and temperatures were studied. The swelling behavior, the morphology, and the stimuli‐responsive behavior of the CC‐loaded hydrogels prepared via FP were thoroughly investigated on the basis of swelling measurement, scanning electron microscopy, and reflection spectra. Results show that the as‐prepared CC‐loaded hydrogels exhibit excellent dual sensitivity to both methanol concentrations and pH values with very short response time, which can be observed visually without the aid of instruments. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on a new strategy for fabricating well‐defined POSS‐based polymeric materials with and without solvent by frontal polymerization (FP) at ambient pressure. First, we functionalize polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). With these functionalized POSS‐containing isocyanate groups, POSS can be easily incorporated into a poly(N‐methylolacrylamide) (PNMA) matrix via FP in situ. Constant velocity FP is observed without significant bulk polymerization. The morphology and thermal properties of POSS‐based hybrid polymers prepared via FP are comparatively investigated on the basis of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results show that the as‐prepared POSS‐based polymeric materials exhibit a higher glass transition temperature than that of pure PNMA, ascribing to modified POSS well‐dispersed in these hybrid polymers. Also, the products with different microstructures display different thermal properties. The pure PNMA exhibits a featureless morphology, whereas a hierarchical morphology is obtained for the POSS‐based polymeric materials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a new facile strategy for quickly synthesizing poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate‐co‐vinyl versatate) amphiphilic gels with excellent physicochemical properties by frontal free‐radical polymerization. The appropriate amounts of 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate, vinyl versatate (VeoVa 9) and ammonium persulfate initiator were mixed together at ambient temperature in the presence of N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone as the solvent medium. Frontal polymerization (FP) was initiated by heating the wall of the tube with a soldering iron. Once initiated, no further energy was required for the polymerization to occur. The dependence of the front velocity and front temperature on the initiator concentration was investigated. The front temperatures were between 132 and 157 °C, depending on the initiator concentration. The morphology, swelling rate, and swelling behavior of amphiphilic gels prepared via FP were comparatively investigated on the basis of scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle, and swelling measurements. Results show that the amphiphilic gels prepared via FP behave with good swelling capacity both in water and organic solvents. The FP can be exploited as an alternative means for synthesis of amphiphilic gels with additional advantages of fast and efficient way. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a new facile strategy for quickly synthesizing pH sensitive poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels (VI = N‐vinylimidazole; HEA = 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) by frontal polymerization. The appropriate amounts of VI, HEA, and ammonium persulfate (APS)/N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) couple redox initiator were mixed together at ambient temperature in the presence of glycerol as the solvent medium. Frontal polymerization (FP) was initiated by heating the upper side of the mixture with a soldering iron. Once initiated, no further energy was required for the polymerization to occur. The dependence of the front velocity and front temperature on the VI/HEA weight ratios were investigated. The pH sensitive behavior, morphology, and heavy metal removal study of poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels prepared via FP were comparatively investigated on the basis of swelling measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupling plasma spectrometer. Results show that the poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels prepared via FP exhibit good pH sensitivity and adsorption capacity. The FP can be exploited as an alternative means for synthesis of pH sensitive hydrogels in a fast and efficient way. The as‐prepared hydrogels can be applied to remove heavy metals. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 4005–4012, 2010  相似文献

Frontal polymerization (FP) is applied for the synthesis of β‐cyclodextrin/poly(vinylimidazole‐co‐N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐acrylic acid) (β‐CD/P(VI‐co‐NVCL‐co‐AA)) copolymers. The dependence of frontal velocity and temperature on the initiator and cross‐linker are discussed. The synthesized copolymers have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermo‐pH dual‐stimuli responsive behavior of the hydrogel is determined by swelling measurement at different temperatures and pH values. Besides, the hydrogels show intrinsic self‐healing behavior and their healing efficiency is determined by the mechanical tests. Interestingly, we integrate FP with microfluidic technology, which may realize the execution of FP under continuous condition. Such simple microfluidics‐FP integrated approach has both methodological and practical value for the synthesis of functional materials. This paper mainly presents the synthesis and characterization of β‐cyclodextrin/poly(vinylimidazole‐co‐N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐acrylic acid) (β‐CD/P(VI‐co‐NVCL‐co‐AA)) copolymers by using thermal frontal polymerization (TFP). Hydrogels were found to be self‐healing with good mechanical performance and show dual thermo‐pH responsive behavior. Low‐cost, energy‐saving and efficient method of thermal frontal polymerization process was integrated with microfluidics technology to prepare supraball hydrogel. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Atmospheric air plasma was created and applied in the frontal polymerization (FP) of fabricating poly(HPA‐co‐VeoVa 10) amphiphilic gels (HPA = 2‐hydroxypropyl acrylate, VeoVa 10 = vinyl versatate) with enhanced physicochemical properties. In plasma‐ignited frontal polymerization (PIFP), once ignited by air plasma, no further energy or treatment was required for the following polymerization. In this system, the comparison between PIFP and thermal frontal polymerization (TFP) was conducted and observed that PIFP and TFP differ considerably in terms of swelling capacity, morphology and component distribution of the products. This finding is of great importance that the simultaneous generation of active radicals in the initial stage can spread throughout reactant and anchor on the synthetic polymer with the assistance of FP. More interestingly, the PIFP‐synthesized copolymer possesses remarkable selective absorption towards organic solvents, which can be facilely manipulated by varying the weight ratios of HPA/VeoVa 10. Obviously, these polymer products could serve as an “organic solvent scavenger” in the field of industrial wastewater treatment. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The nonaqueous dispersion polymerization of styrene in methanol with poly[(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐vinyltriethylbenzyl ammonium bromide)]‐b‐polyisobutene as a stabilizer was investigated. There was no observable inducing period or autoacceleration in the polymerization process. The conversion increased almost linearly with the polymerization time as high as 80%. The average sizes of the obtained polystyrene particles increased, and the size distributions of the polystyrene particles tended to become narrower, with increasing conversion. The mechanism of the dispersion polymerization in the presence of polyisobutene‐b‐poly[(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐vinyltriethylbenzyl ammonium bromide)] was nucleation/growth. When the stabilizer/monomer ratio (w/w) was greater than 2.0%, the polystyrene dispersion was stable, and there was no observable polymer particle coagulation taking place during the whole polymerization process. The average diameter of the polymer particles can be mediated through changes in the polymerization conversion, monomer, and stabilizer. Nearly monodispersed polystyrene particles with average diameters of approximately 0.45–2.21 μm were obtained under optimal conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Anisotropic Janus magnetic polymeric nanoparticles are prepared via the miniemulsion polymerization of styrene and acrylic acid monomers in the presence of oleic acid‐coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The controllable phase separation between the polymer matrix and the encapsulated MNPs is a key success factor to produce Janus morphology. The effects of MNPs, 2,2′‐azobis(2‐isobutyronitrile) and sodium dodecyl sulfate contents, on the morphology, chemical composition and colloidal stability of the prepared Janus hybrid particles are investigated. Besides the determination of polymerization conversion, zeta potential, size analysis, TGA, and TEM are applied for characterization of the anisotropic particles. The results show the stable spherical Janus particles containing MNPs (15 wt % magnetic content) located on one side of each polymer particle. The anisotropic submicron Janus magnetic polymeric particles (250 nm) can be easily separated by an external magnet. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Konjac glucomannan‐graft‐acrylic acid polymers, used as superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), were synthesized by frontal polymerization (FP). The features of front propagation including front velocity and maximum temperature (Tmax) were influenced by the amount of glucomannan, initiator, and environment temperature. The graft copolymer was characterized by FTIR, DSC, and SEM. The amount of crosslinking agent mainly determined the crosslinking degree of SAPs that would affect the water absorbency and microstructure. Water absorbency of SAP was also investigated and most of them displayed high water absorption rate. The aforementioned results allow us to conclude that FP can be considered as a promising method to fabricate SAP for its excellent advantages. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copper(0)‐mediated radical polymerization (single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization) is an efficient polymerization technique that allows control over the polymerization of acrylates, vinyl chloride and other monomers, yielding bromide terminated polymer. In this contribution, we investigate the evolution of the end‐group fidelity at very high conversion both in the presence and in the absence of initially added copper (II) bromide (CuBr2). High resolution electrospray‐ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI‐MS) allows determination of the precise chemical structure of the dead polymers formed during the polymerization to very high monomer conversion, including post polymerization conditions. Two different regimes can be identified via ESI‐MS analysis. During the polymerization, dead polymer results mainly from termination via disproportionation, whereas at very high conversion (or in the absence of monomer, that is, post‐polymerization), dead polymers are predominantly generated by chain transfer reactions (presumably to ligand). The addition of CuBr2 significantly reduces the extent of termination by both chain transfer and disproportionation, at very high monomer conversion and under post‐polymerization conditions, offering a convenient approach to maintaining high end‐group fidelity in Cu(0)‐mediated radical polymerization. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we report on the synthesis and characterization of homopolymers and copolymers of acrylic acid and 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate prepared by the use of the frontal polymerization (FP) technique. Tetraethyleneglycoldiacrylate was used as a crosslinker and benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The maximum temperatures reached by the front were in the range between 214 °C and 296 °C. Besides, front velocities ranged between 3.9 and 10.8 cm/min, the latter being one of the highest values reported so far in the FP literature. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to estimate the conversion degree, which was always comprised between 90% and 96%, and to determine the glass transition temperatures, which were found to be dependent on the composition, with values ranging from 13 °C to 168 °C. Moreover, the obtained materials were allowed to swell in aqueous solutions at various pH. The samples exhibit a moderate increase of the swelling ratio percentage (SR%) at pH ≈ 5–6, and a sudden and larger SR% increase at pH ≈ 12–13 depending on the composition, thus indicating the obtainment of pH‐responsive polymer hydrogels. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report an available approach for quickly fabricating CdS QD‐polymer nanocomposites via frontal polymerization (FP). First, we synthesized (3‐mercaptopropyl)‐1‐trimethoxysilane (MPS)‐capped CdS quantum dots (QDs). With these MPS‐capped CdS QDs containing mercapto groups, MPS‐capped CdS QDs can be easily incorporated into a poly(N‐methylolacrylamide) (PNMA) matrix via FP. A variety of features for preparing QD‐polymer nanocomposites, such as initiator concentration and CdS concentration, were thoroughly investigated. The fluorescence properties of QD‐polymer nanocomposites prepared via FP are comparatively investigated on the basis of ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Results show that the PL intensity of QD‐polymer nanocomposites prepared via the FP method is superior to that obtained by the traditional batch polymerization (BP) method. In addition, by measuring the changes of PL intensity of the samples immersed in different concentrations of copper acetate solution, we found the QD‐polymer nanocomposites can be ultrasensitive to copper ions. This FP process can be exploited as a facile and rapid way for synthesis QD‐polymer nanocomposites on a large scale, avoiding the fluorescence quenching of nanocrystals during incorporation nanocrystals into polymer matrices. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reactivity ratios for the important acrylamide (AAm)/acrylic acid (AAc) copolymerization system exhibit considerable scatter in previously published literature, and therefore, there is a need for more definitive values for these reactivity ratios. An appropriate methodology, based on the error‐in‐variables‐model (EVM) framework along with a direct numerical integration procedure, is applied in order to determine reliable reactivity ratios. The reliability of the results is confirmed with extensive and independent replication. Furthermore, via an EVM‐based criterion for the design of experiments using mechanistic models, optimal feed compositions are calculated, and from these optimal reactivity ratios are estimated for the first time (rAAm = 1.33 and rAAc = 0.23) based on information from the full conversion range. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, a benzenedinitrile functionalized monomer, 2‐methyl‐acrylic acid 6‐(3,4‐dicyano‐phenoxy)‐hexyl ester, was successfully polymerized via the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer method. The polymerization behavior conveyed the characteristics of “living”/controlled radical polymerization: the first‐order kinetics, linear increase of number‐average molecular weight with monomer conversion, narrow molecular weight distribution, and successful chain‐extension experiment. The soluble Zn(II) phthalocyanine (Pc)‐containing (ZnPc) polymers were achieved by post‐polymerization modification of the obtained polymers. The Zn(II) phthalocyanine‐functionalized polymer was characterized by FTIR, UV–vis, fluorescence, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The potential application of above ZnPc‐functionalized polymer as electron donor material in bulk heterojunction organic solar cell was studied. The device with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/ZnPc‐Polymer/PC61BM/LiF/Al structure provided a power conversion efficiency of 0.014%, fill factor of 0.24, open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.21 V, and short‐circuit current (Jsc) of 0.28 mA/cm2. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of selenium‐substituted carbonates, S,Se‐dibenzyl dithioselenocarbonate (DTSC), S,Se‐dibenzyl thiodiselenocarbonate (TDSC), and Se,Se‐dibenzyl triselenocarbonate (TSC), were synthesized and used as mediators in radical polymerization. The results indicate that these selenium‐substituted carbonates can control the polymerization of styrene (St) and methyl acrylate, as evidenced by the number‐average molecular weight that increased linearly with the monomer conversion, molecular weights that agreed well with the predicted values, and successful chain extensions. The treatment of the resultant polystyrene by hydrogen peroxide generated polymers with approximately half‐reduced molecular weights, and the absence of carbonate groups and vinyl double bond‐terminated chain ends. The polymerization with these selenium‐substituted carbonates was the same polymerization mechanism as their analogue, the widely used S,S‐dibenzyl trithiocarbonate. This work provided a flexible protocol to incorporate selenium into the polymer chain backbone. Specifically, the treatment of these polymers by oxidation produced “clickable” vinyl‐terminated chain ends, which provided possibilities for further functionalization, for example, via a thiol‐ene click reaction. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on a facile route to synthesize snowman‐like asymmetric composite particles via γ‐ray initiated seeded emulsion polymerization after a hydrolytic condensation process on the surface of second monomer swollen poly(styrene‐divinylbenzene‐acrylic acid) seeds. Effects of the amounts and kinds of second monomer and inorganic precursor, different radiation polymerization conditions including dose rates and absorbed doses on the morphology of the obtained particles were investigated. The obtained asymmetric particles can serve as ideal solid surfactants to stabilize the water‐in‐oil emulsions, and soap‐free hierarchical materials were obtained by polymerization of monomers in water or oil phase. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
