Herein, cylindrical molecular bottlebrushes grafted with poly(2‐oxazoline) (POx) as a shaped tunable uni‐molecular nanoparticle were synthesized via the grafting‐onto approach. First, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) backbones with azide pendant units were prepared via reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization followed by post‐modification. The degree of polymerization (DP) of the backbones was tuned in a range from 20 to 800. Alkynyl‐terminated POx side chains were synthesized by living cationic ring opening polymerization (LCROP) of 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline (EtOx) and 2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline (MeOx), respectively. The DP of side chains was varied between 20 and 100. Then, the copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkynyl cycloaddition (CuAAC) click chemistry was conducted with a feed ratio of [alkynyl]:[azide] = 1.2:1 to yield a series of brushes. Depending on the DP of side chains, the grafting density ranged between 47 and 85%. The resulting brushlike nanoparticles exhibited shapes of sphere, rod and worm. Aqueous solutions of PEtOx brushes demonstrated a thermoresponsive behavior as a function of the length of backbones and side chains. Surprisingly, it was found that the lower critical solution temperature of PEtOx brushes increased with a length increase of backbones. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Eight‐arm poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) stars were prepared by the core‐first method with a newly designed octahydroxylated precursor. This compound was readily obtained in two steps from commercially available tert‐butylcalix[8]arene. The choice of the proper solvent of polymerization proved crucial to obtain PEO star materials with a narrow distribution of molar masses. For instance, the use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) resulted in PEO samples of rather large polydispersities (PDI: 1.3–1.5). In this solvent, the calixarene‐based precursor was only sparingly soluble, and an attempt to metalate its eight hydroxyl groups produced insoluble alkoxides. In addition, the presence of a side population of low‐molar‐mass species attributable to linear chains was detected because of the chain transfer of propagating alkoxides to DMSO. Polymerization experiments carried out in tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent afforded better control over the molar masses and PDIs. This was related to the better solubility of the octafunctional calixarene‐based precursor in THF and to the small tendency of the alkoxides formed to aggregate in that solvent. Under such conditions, all eight hydroxyl functions efficiently initiated the polymerization of ethylene oxide. In this way, well‐defined PEO stars (PDI < 1.2) of tunable molar masses incorporating a calixarene‐based core could be obtained, as it was supported by the characterization of the samples by size exclusion chromatography, NMR, and viscometry. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in the alcohol/water mixture mediated with the brush macro‐RAFT agent of poly[poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether vinylphenyl‐co‐styrene] trithiocarbonate [P(mPEGV‐co‐St)‐TTC] with similar molecular weight but different chemical composition is investigated. Well‐controlled RAFT polymerization including an initial slow homogeneous polymerization and a subsequent fast heterogeneous polymerization at almost complete monomer conversion is achieved. The molecular weight of the synthesized block copolymer increases linearly with the monomer conversion, and the polydispersity is relatively narrow (PDI < 1.3). The RAFT polymerization kinetics is dependent on the chemical composition in the brush macro‐RAFT agents, and those with high content of hydrophobic segment lead to fast RAFT polymerization. The growth of the block copolymer nano‐objects during the RAFT polymerization is explored, and various block copolymer nano‐objects such as nanospheres, worms, vesicles and large‐compound‐micelle‐like particles are prepared. The parameters such as the chemical composition in the brush macro‐RAFT agent, the chain length of the solvatophobic block, the concentration of the feeding monomer and the solvent character affecting the size and morphology of the block copolymer nano‐objects are investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RAFT polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA, 1100 g mol?1) was first performed using cyanoisopropyl dithiobenzoate (CPDB). The control of PEGMA homopolymerization, carried out in THF ([PEGMA] = 40 wt %) at 65 °C (reflux) using 2,2′‐Azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as initiator, was shown by the linear increase of molar masses and the low polydispersity indices (PDI) observed with conversion and also by the determination of a high chain transfer constant (Ctr = 9.1) for CPDB in this system. Copolymerization of PEGMA with methacrylic acid (MAA) ([PEGMA]/[MAA] = 40/60) was then undertaken first in dioxane at 85 °C. High conversion (89%) was obtained in 3 h without any composition drift and with a good level of control (PDI < 1.40). When the polymerization was performed in water, a strong increase in polymerization rate was observed with almost quantitative conversion (98%) in 2 h without affecting the level of control of the final copolymers (PDI ~ 1.30). These last results were tentatively explained by the formation of hydrophobic domains in which the polymerization occurred as in bulk. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of 21‐arm methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene star polymers is reported. The copper (I)‐mediated living radical polymerization of MMA was carried out with a cyclodextrin‐core‐based initiator with 21 independent discrete initiation sites: heptakis[2,3,6‐tri‐O‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl]‐β‐cyclodextrin. Living polymerization occurred, providing well‐defined 21‐arm star polymers with predicted molecular weights calculated from the initiator concentration and the consumed monomer as well as low polydispersities [e.g., poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), number‐average molecular weight (Mn) = 55,700, polydispersity index (PDI) = 1.07; Mn = 118,000, PDI = 1.06; polystyrene, Mn = 37,100, PDI = 1.15]. Functional methacrylate monomers containing poly(ethylene glycol), a glucose residue, and a tert‐amine group in the side chain were also polymerized in a similar fashion, leading to hydrophilic star polymers, again with good control over the molecular weight and polydispersity (Mn = 15,000, PDI = 1.03; Mn = 36,500, PDI = 1.14; and Mn = 139,000, PDI = 1.09, respectively). When styrene was used as the monomer, it was difficult to obtain well‐defined polystyrene stars at high molecular weights. This was due to the increased occurrence of side reactions such as star–star coupling and thermal (spontaneous) polymerization; however, low‐polydispersity polymers were achieved at relatively low conversions. Furthermore, a star block copolymer consisting of PMMA and poly(butyl methacrylate) was successfully synthesized with a star PMMA as a macroinitiator (Mn = 104,000, PDI = 1.05). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A dendritic macroinitiator having 16 TEMPO‐based alkoxyamines, Star‐16 , was prepared by the reaction of a dendritic macroinitiator having eight TEMPO‐based alkoxyamines, [G‐3]‐OH , with 4,4′‐bis(chlorocarbonyl)biphenyl. The nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) of styrene (St) from Star‐16 gave 16‐arm star polymers with PDI of 1.19–1.47, and NMPR of 4‐vinylpyridine from the 16‐arm star polymer gave 16‐arm star diblock copolymers with PDI of 1.30–1.43. The ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone from [G‐3]‐OH and the subsequent NMRP of St gave AB8 9‐miktoarm star copolymers with PDI of 1.30–1.38. The benzyl ether linkages of the 16‐arm star polymers and the AB8 9‐miktoarm star copolymers were cleaved by treating with Me3SiI, and the resultant poly(St) arms were investigated by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The SEC results showed PDIs of 1.23–1.28 and 1.18–1.22 for the star polymers and miktoarm stars copolymers, respectively, showing that they have well‐controlled poly(St) arms. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) homopolymers with low polydispersities were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization. The performances of two chain transfer agents, 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate and 4‐cyanopentanic acid dithiobenzoate (CPADB), were compared. It was found that the polymerization of 2‐(diethylamino) ethyl methylacrylate was under good control in the presence of CPADB with 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) as initiator in 1,4‐dioxane at 70 °C. The kinetic behaviors were investigated under different CPADB/ACPA molar ratios. A long polymerization inhibition period was observed at high [CPADB]/[ACPA] ratio. The influences of [CPADB]/[ACPA] ratio, monomer/[CPADB] ratio, and temperature were studied with respect to monomer conversion, molecular weight control, and polydispersity index (PDI). The PDI decreased from 1.21 to 1.12, as the CPADB/ACPA molar ratio changed from 2 to 10. The molecular weight of PDEAEMA could be controlled by monomer/CPADB molar ratio. The control over MW and PDI was improved as the temperature increased from 60 to 70 °C; however, an additional increase to 80 °C led to a loss of control. Using PDEAEMA macroRAFT agent, pH/thermo double‐responsive block copolymers of PDEAEMA and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PDEAEMA‐b‐PNIPAM) with narrow polydispersity (PDI, 1.24) were synthesized. The lower critical solution temperature of PDEAEMA‐b‐PNIPAM block copolymer depended on the environmental pH. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the controlled‐radical polymerization of the photocleavable o‐nitrobenzyl methacrylate (NBMA) and o‐nitrobenzyl acrylate (NBA) monomers. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), and nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) have been evaluated. For all methods used, the acrylate‐type monomer does not polymerize, or polymerizes very slowly in a noncontrolled manner. The methacrylate‐type monomer can be polymerized by RAFT with some degree of control (PDI ∼ 1.5) but leading to molar masses up to 11,000 g/mol only. ATRP proved to be the best method since a controlled‐polymerization was achieved when conversions are limited to 30%. In this case, polymers with molar masses up to 17,000 g/mol and polydispersity index as low as 1.13 have been obtained. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization of butyl methacrylate (BMA) and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) was carried out with 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as chain transfer agent (CTA). Concentration effects of RAFT agent and initiator on kinetics and molecular weight were investigated. No obvious red oil layer (phase's separation) and coagulation was observed in the first stage of homopolymerization of BMA. The polymer molecular weights increased linearly with the monomer conversion with polydispersities lower than 1.2. At 75 °C, the monomer conversion could achieve above 96% in 3 h with [momomer]:[RAFT]:[KPS] = 620:4:1 (mole ratio). The results showed excellent controlled/living polymerization characteristics and a very fast polymerization rate. Furthermore, the synthesis of poly(BMA‐b‐DFMA) diblock copolymers with a regular structure (PDI < 1.30, PMMA calibration) was performed by adding the monomer of DFMA at the end of the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization of BMA. The success of diblock copolymerization was showed by the molecular weight curves shifting toward higher molar mass, recorded by gel permeation chromatography before and after block copolymerization. Compositions of block copolymers were further confirmed by 1H NMR, FTIR, and DSC analysis. The copolymers exhibited a phase‐separated morphology and possessed distinct glass transition temperatures associated with fluoropolymer PDFMA and PBMA domains. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Star poly(methyl methacrylate)s (P*) of various arm lengths and core sizes were synthesized in high yields by the polymer linking reaction in Ru(II)‐catalyzed living radical polymerization. The yields of the star polymers were strongly dependent on the reaction conditions and increased under the following conditions: (1) at a higher overall concentration of arm chains ([P*]), (2) with a larger degree of polymerization (DP) of the arm chains (arm length), and (3) with a larger ratio (r) of linking agents to P* (core size). In particular, the yields sharply increased in a short time at a higher temperature, in a polar solution, and at a higher complex concentration after the addition of linking agents. These star polymers were then analyzed by multi‐angle laser light scattering to determine the weight‐average molecular weight (3.8 × 103 to 1.5 × 106), the number of arm chains per molecule (f = 4–63), and the radius of gyration (Rz = 2–22 nm), which also depended on the reaction conditions (e.g., f and Rz increased as [P*], DP, and r increased). Small‐angle X‐ray scattering analyses of the star polymers showed that they consisted of spheres for which the radius of the microgel core was 2.7 nm. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The titanium and zirconium complexes in C3 and Cs symmetric forms synthesized from corresponding aminotriols in combination with MAO polymerized 1‐hexene in a controlled manner. When the polymerization temperature was lowered, they gave high molecular weight monodisperse polyhexene with narrow polydispersities indicating quazi‐living systems. The isotactic polyhexene obtained from C3 titanium catalyst has the molecular weight of around 46,500 with PDI of 1.3 and the hemi‐isotactic polymer from Cs titanium catalyst has the molecular weight of around 617,000 with PDI of 1.3. The analogues zirconium complexes upon activation with MAO polymerize hexene to give polyhexene having molecular weight of 53,000 (C3) and 626,000 (pseudo‐Cs) with PDI ranging from 1.2 to 1.4. The MIX‐titanium catalyst prepared from the 50:50 mixture of aminotriols was also able to polymerize 1‐hexene and the GPC traces of the polyhexene suggests that even though the catalyst was formed from the mixture of aminotriols, the C3 and Cs symmetry of the catalysts retain its originality avoiding the formation of aggregates or polymeric forms. When one of the arms of aminotriol was methylated yield C2 and meso aminodiol ligands and their corresponding titanium and zirconium complexes gave higher molecular weight polyhexenes with lower PDI (C2‐Zr‐Mn: 260,000; PDI: 1.05–1.10; mesoZr‐Mn: 220,000; PDI: 1.05–1.10) possibly suggesting that these systems are close to living systems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) were combined to synthesize poly(?‐caprolactone‐co‐octadecyl methacrylate‐co‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) copolymers possessing a triblock or random block structure. Various synthetic pathways (sequential or simultaneous approaches) were investigated for the synthesis of both copolymers. For the preparation of these copolymers, an initiator with dual functionality for ATRP/anionic ring‐opening polymerization, 2‐hydroxyethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate, was used. Copolymers were prepared with good structural control and low polydispersities (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), but one limitation was identified: the dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) block had to be synthesized after the ?‐caprolactone block. ROP could not proceed in the presence of DMAEMA because the complexation of the amine groups in poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) deactivated tin(II) hexanoate, which was used as a catalyst for ROP. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To prepare water‐soluble, syndiotacticity‐rich poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrils for various industrial applications, we synthesized syndiotacticity‐rich, low molecular weight PVA by the solution polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at low temperatures with 2,2′‐azobis(2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) as an initiator and successive saponification of poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi). Effects of the initiator and monomer concentrations and the polymerization temperature were investigated in terms of the polymerization behaviors and molecular structures of PVPi and the corresponding syndiotacticity‐rich PVA. The polymerization rate of VPi in THF was proportional to the 0.91 power of the ADMVN concentration, indicating the heterogeneous nature of THF polymerization. The low‐temperature solution polymerization of VPi in THF with ADMVN proved to be successful in obtaining water‐soluble PVA with a number‐average degree of polymerization (Pn) of 300–900, a syndiotactic dyad content of 60–63%, and an ultimate conversion of VPi into PVPi of over 75%. Despite the low molecular weight of PVA with Pn = 800, water‐soluble PVA microfibrillar fibers were prepared because of the high level of syndiotacticity. In contrast, for PVA with Pn = 330, shapeless and globular morphologies were observed, indicating that molecular weight has an important role in the in situ fibrillation of syndiotacticity‐rich PVA. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of new 7‐membered diazepanone alkoxyamines [2,2,7,7‐tetramethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 3 ) and 2,7‐diethyl‐2,3,7‐trimethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 8 )] through the Beckmann rearrangement of piperidin‐4‐one alkoxyamines was developed. Both 3 and 8 were evaluated as initiators and regulators for the nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate. 8 , a sterically highly hindered alkoxyamine readily available as a crystalline solid, allowed the fast and controlled polymerization and preparation of polymers with low polydispersity indices (1.2–1.4) up to a degree of polymerization of about 100. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of multibranched pentablock copolymer (mBr5BlC), poly(L ‐lactide)‐b‐HBP‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐HBP‐b‐poly(L ‐lactide) (HBP = hyperbranched polyglycidol), has been synthesized by ring‐opening multibranching polymerization of glycidol using bifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) [PEG; molecular weight (MW) = 1000] as an initiator, followed by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of L ‐lactide in the presence of stannous octoate. The ROP of different amounts of L ‐lactide on HBP‐b‐PEG‐b‐HBP [MW = 2550; polydispersity index (PDI) = 1.08] yielded a series of the targeted mBr5BlCs of the MW range of 4360–15,300 with narrow PDI. All the mBr5BlCs have been well demonstrated to be in possession of good biocompatibility as biomaterials for various applications in biological medicine areas. The mBr5BlCs with tunable MW exhibited promising controllability in self‐assembly into spherical micellar structures with an average diameter range of 59–140 nm, which have no acute and intrinsic cytotoxicity against normal cells and provide a convenient strategy for drug loading. The anticancer drug doxorubicin was demonstrated to have a good affinity with the copolymer system, and its controlled release was performed in various pHs. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The micellar macro‐RAFT agent‐mediated dispersion polymerization of styrene in the methanol/water mixture is performed and synthesis of temperature‐sensitive ABC triblock copolymer nanoparticles is investigated. The thermoresponsive diblock copolymer of poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐block‐poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐diethylamine] trithiocarbonate forms micelles in the polymerization solvent at the polymerization temperature and, therefore, the dispersion RAFT polymerization undergoes as similarly as seeded dispersion polymerization with accelerated polymerization rate. With the progress of the RAFT polymerization, the molecular weight of the synthesized triblock copolymer of poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐block‐poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐diethylamine]‐b‐polystyrene linearly increases with the monomer conversion, and the PDI values of the triblock copolymers are below 1.2. The dispersion RAFT polymerization affords the in situ synthesis of the triblock copolymer nanoparticles, and the mean diameter of the triblock copolymer nanoparticles increases with the polymerization degree of the polystyrene block. The triblock copolymer nanoparticles contain a central thermoresponsive poly [N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐diethylamine] block, and the soluble‐to‐insoluble ‐‐transition temperature is dependent on the methanol content in the methanol/water mixture. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined hyperbranched polystyrenes have been successfully prepared by polymerization of AB2 macromonomer, polystyrene containing an azide group at its one end and two terminal propargyl groups at the other end via click reaction. For preparation of AB2 macromonomers, an ATRP initiator, bispropargyl 2‐bromosuccinate (BPBS) with two propargyl groups and one bromine group was synthesized by the successive bromination and esterification reaction of L ‐aspartic acid. The resulting BPBS initiated the ATRP of St, and subsequently, the terminal bromine groups of (CH≡C)2‐PS‐Brs were substituted by N3 via the reaction with sodium azide resulting the AB2 macromonomer, (CH≡C)2‐PS‐N3 with various molecular weights. All intermediates and the resultant polymers were characterized by GPC, 1H NMR, FTIR, and MALLS methods. The polymerization kinetics study showed fast increase of DP at the initial stage of polymerization and then slow increase of their DP. The final “HyperMacs” have high‐molecular weight up to Mw,MALLS = 340,000 g/mol, their molecular weight distributions were moderately narrow (Mw/Mn = 1.47–1.65). The ratios of [η]H/[η]L of the HyperMacs formed in the polymerization system increased with evolution of polymerization. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An N‐alkoxyamine macroinitiator bearing a polymeric nitroxide cap was synthesized and used to investigate the effect of nitroxide size on the rate of nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP). This macroinitiator was prepared from asymmetric double‐headed initiator 9 , which contains both an α‐bromoester and an N‐alkoxyamine functionality. Poly(methyl methacrylate) was grown by atom transfer radical polymerization from the α‐bromoester end of this initiator, resulting in a macroinitiator (Mn = 31,000; PDI = 1.34) bearing a nitroxide cap permanently attached to a polymer chain. The polymerization kinetics of this macroinitiator in NMRP were compared with known N‐alkoxyamine initiator 1 . It was found that the rate of polymerization was unaffected by the size of the macromolecular nitroxide cap. It was confirmed that NMRP using this macroinitiator is a “living” process. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 2015–2025, 2007  相似文献

Two complementary tandem strategies based on the one‐pot combination of click chemistry and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are studied. Initially, functionalized random copolymers are obtained by copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and propargyl methacrylate simultaneously to the click chemistry coupling of a monofunctional azide. Then, an approach based on the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and 11‐azido‐undecanoyl methacrylate simultaneously to the click chemistry coupling of a monofunctional alkyne is also investigated. For both the approach, polymerization and click chemistry coupling are catalyzed by CuBr and bipyridine (Bipy) in diphenylether at 90 °C. The [Bipy]/[CuBr] ratio is varied from 2 to 25 and the ratio of functionalized comonomer from 20 to 70 mol %. Both the tandem strategies proceed with good yields (50–80%) and allow a good control over the characteristics of the resulting random copolymers and macromolecular brushes (Mn ~ 15,000–40,000 g/mol and PDI ~ 1.3–2.0) as well as quantitative click functionalization as characterized by 1H NMR and size exclusion chromatography analyses. Although the click process is generally completed at the early stage of the process, the rate of polymerization depends on the amount of bipyridine involved. It was found that extending most of the polymerization process out of the click reaction regime results in a better control of the polymerization, preventing the significant occurrence of side reactions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible‐addition fragmentation‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) was performed with 2‐(2‐cyano‐2‐propyl‐dodecyl)trithiocarbonate as RAFT agent and azobis(isobutyronitrile) as initiator. Linear polyacrylonitrile (Mn = 133,000 g/mol, PDI = 1.34) was prepared within 7 h in 86% isolated yield. High‐yield copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) was performed and copolymerization parameters were determined according to Kelen and Tüdös at 90 °C in ethylene carbonate yielding rAN = 0.2 and rMMA = 0.42. The molecular weights, polydispersity indices (PDIs), and MMA content of the copolymer were adjusted in a way that precursor fibers could be prepared via wet spinning. These precursor fibers had round cross‐sections and a dense morphology, showing tenacities of 40–50 cN/tex and elastic moduli of 900–1000 cN/tex at a fineness of 1 dtex and an elongation of 13–17%. Precursor fibers were oxidatively stabilized and then carbonized at different temperatures. A maximum tensile strength of 2.5 GPa was reached at 1350 °C. Thermal analysis, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and tensile testing were used to characterize the resulting carbon fibers. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
