In order to achieve dramatic improvements in the performance of rubber materials, the development of carbon nanotube (CNT)‐reinforced rubber composites was attempted. The CNT/natural rubber (NR) nanocomposite was prepared through solvent mixing on the basis of pretreatment of CNTs. Thermal properties, vulcanization characteristics, and physical and mechanical properties of the CNT/NR nanocomposites were characterized in contrast to the carbon black (CB)/NR composite. Through the addition of the CNTs treated using acid bath followed by ball milling with HRH (hydrated silica, resorcinol, and hexamethylene tetramine) bonding systems, the crystallization melting peak in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves of NR weakened and the curing rate of NR slightly decreased. Meanwhile, the over‐curing reversion of CNT/NR nanocomposites was alleviated. The dispersion of the treated CNTs in the rubber matrix and interfacial bonding between them were rather good. The mechanical properties of the CNT‐reinforced NR showed a considerable increase compared to the neat NR and traditional CB/NR composite. At the same time, the CNT/NR nanocomposites exhibited better rebound resilience and dynamic compression properties. The storage modulus of the CNT/NR nanocomposites greatly exceeds that of neat NR and CB/NR composites under all temperature regions. The thermal stability of NR was also obviously improved with the addition of the treated CNTs. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Biodegradable poly(butylene succinate)/nanosized carbon black (PBS/CB) nanocomposites were prepared by melt compounding to investigate the effect of CB on flammability and mechanical properties of PBS. In the nanocomposites, CB displayed some positive effect on improving the flame retardancy of PBS, mainly on the decrease of peak of heat release rate, the increase of limited oxygen index value, and the inhibition of melt dripping. It was contributed to the formation of a good carbon layer during combustion and of a network structure in the PBS matrix. Moreover, a good balance on mechanical performances of PBS/CB nanocomposites was achieved with enhanced stiffness and high toughness, which was ascribed to the compatibilization of PBS‐g‐MA, leading to a good dispersion of nanofillers and strong matrix‐nanoparticle interaction. Flame retardant mixtures of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) were embedded in polypropylene (PP) to investigate what will happen if the additives exhibit two different flame retardation mechanisms. TEM tests showed that CNTs dispersed homogenously in PP matrix without any visible agglomeration. The effects of CNTs on thermal stability and flammability of PP were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and cone calorimetry tests, respectively. Results indicated that the introduction of CNTs only enhanced thermal stability of materials in a certain temperature range, but caused a severe deterioration of flame retardancy due to the interaction of the network structure and the intumescent carbonaceous char. Furthermore, conditions for an intumescent flame retardation system to behave with high efficiency were also discussed by a secondary combustion test.  相似文献

A composite consisting of carbon nanotubes and zinc aluminum‐layered double hydroxide (CNT/ZnAl‐LDH) with good solubility in liquid media was synthesized by a co‐precipitation method. The structural characterization and morphological observation demonstrated that the composite displayed a heterostructure with CNTs embedded in ZnAl‐LDH nanosheets. The influence of CNT/ZnAl‐LDH on the thermal stability and flammability performance of flexible polyurethane (PU) foams was characterized. It was established that CNT/ZnAl‐LDH could improve the thermal stability while reduce the peak heat release rate as well as the total smoke release of PU foams. The formation of a protective char with increased mechanical properties and high graphitization degree was mostly postulated for the improved flame retardancy. To improve the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and flame retardancy of layered double hydroxide (LDH) in epoxy resin (EP), organic nickel‐iron layered double hydroxide (ONiFe‐LDH‐CNTs) hybrids were assembled through co‐precipitation. These hybrids were further used as reinforcing filler in EP. EP/ONiFe‐LDH‐CNTs nanocomposites containing 4 wt% of ONiFe‐LDH‐CNTs with different ratios of ONiFe‐LDH and CNTs were prepared by ultrasonic dispersion and program temperature curing. The structure and morphology of the obtained hybrids were characterized by different techniques. The dispersion of nanofillers in the EP matrix was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results revealed a coexistence of exfoliated and intercalated ONiFe‐LDH‐ CNTs in polymer matrix. Strong combination of the above nanofillers with the EP matrix provided an efficient thermal and flame retardant improvement for the nanocomposites. It showed that EP/ONiFe‐LDH‐CNTs nanocomposites exhibited superior flame retardant and thermal properties compared with EP. Such improved thermal properties could be attributed to the better homogeneous dispersion, stronger interfacial interaction, excellent charring performance of ONiFe‐LDH and synergistic effect between ONiFe‐LDH and CNTs.  相似文献

A new intumescent flame retardant (PSiNII), which contains silicon, phosphorus, and nitrogen elements, has been synthesized and incorporated into polypropylene (PP). Its effect on the properties of PP is investigated based on flame retardancy, thermal properties, mechanical properties, and morphologies. The flame retardancy is evaluated by the limiting oxygen index value. The thermal properties (oxidative behaviors and thermal stability) are investigated by thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen and air atmosphere. The mechanical properties are researched based on the maximum tensile stress and relative strain at break. The morphologies of PP/PSiNII are studied by the scanning electron micrograph. Their flame retardancy and thermal stability are improved by introducing PSiNII. PP/PSiNII blends can achieve high fire performance and keep high mechanical property at the same time. During a fire, the melt‐dripping behaviors of PP‐containing PSiNII are improved. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 2548–2556, 2005  相似文献

Nanocarbon black (CB) was introduced into ethylene-vinyl acetate/brucite (EM) composites to investigate the synergistic effect of CB and metal hydroxide on improving the flame retardancy of EVA. Flammability properties of the as-prepared EVA composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and cone calorimetry test. The results indicated that the optimum mass ratio of CB/brucite was 1/54, at which the EVA composites displayed dramatic improvement on thermal stability and flame retardancy. The LOI value was as high as 35.3%, the UL-94 passed the V-0 rating, and the peak heat release rate reduced 79% in comparison with pure EVA. Based on the morphology and structure analysis for residue chars, the flame-retardant mechanism was attributed mainly to the positive synergistic effect of CB and brucite on promoting the formation of better carbon protective layer during combustion.

The exceptional electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been exploited for the preparation of conductive nanocomposites based on a large variety of insulating polymers. Among these, perfluoropolyether‐polyurethanes (PFPE‐PUs) represent a class of highly performing fluorinated materials with excellent water/oil repellency, chemical resistance, and substrate adhesion. The incorporation of highly conductive fillers to this class of highly performing materials allows them to be exploited in new technological and industrial fields where their unique properties need to be combined with the electrical conductivity or the electrostatic dissipation properties of carbon nanotubes. However, no studies have been presented so far on nanocomposites based on PFPE‐PUs and CNTs. In this work, polymer nanocomposites based on waterborne PFPE‐PUs and increasing amounts of carboxylated multiwall CNTs (COOH‐CNTs) were prepared and characterized for the first time. The effect of increasing concentration of COOH‐CNTs on the physical, mechanical, and surface properties of the nanocomposites was investigated by means of rheological measurements, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermal characterization, optical contact angle measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, electrical measurements showed that the highly insulating undoped PFPE‐PU system undergoes substantial modifications upon addition of COOH‐CNTs, leading to the formation of conductive nanocomposites with electrical conductivities as high as 1 S/cm. The results of this study demonstrate that the addition of COOH‐CNTs to PFPE‐PU systems represents a promising strategy to expand their possible use to technological applications where chemical stability, water/oil repellence and electrical conductivity are simultaneously required. This paper reports on the testing and development of a polypropylene (PP) nanocomposite systems with improved flame retardancy. The work utilizes the unique properties of sepiolite nanoclay (Sep) in combination with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in order to develop an optimized ternary nanocomposite system. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed significant improvements to the residual char towards the later stages of the thermal ramp. The pyrolysis combustion flow calorimeter (PCFC) was employed to screen the various PP composites with respect to their potential flammability performance. The heat release capacity, which is an indicator of a materials fire hazard, did not show any reduction with the addition of nanofillers using the apparatus standard testing procedure. However, this changed by switching to a lower burn within the PCFC's furnace; this diverted oxygen to the pyrolysing sample. Using the results gained from TGA and the PCFC, the optimized ternary nanocomposite system (10 wt.% Sep + 2 wt.% CNT) was compounded on a larger scale and tested in the cone calorimeter. This showed a significant reduction of 82% in peak heat release rate in comparison to unfilled PP. Comparisons were also made between the testing of these samples in the PCFC and cone calorimeter. The main objectives were to develop a flame‐retardant PP nanocomposite ternary system as well as assessing the PCFC with traditional techniques. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polypropylene nanocomposites (PP/CNTs) were prepared by melt mixing using maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (mPP) as the compatibilizer. The effect of mPP on dispersion of CNTs was then studied using the tool of rheology, aiming at relating the viscoelastic behaviors to the mesoscopic structure of CNTs. To further explore the kinetics of hybrid formation, a multilayered sample with alternatively superposed neat mPP and binary PP/CNTs microcomposites (without addition of mPP) sheets was prepared and experienced dynamic annealing in the small amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The results show that melt blending CNTs with PP can only yield the composites with microscale dispersion of CNTs, while adding mPP promotes nanoscale dispersion of CNTs as smaller bundles or even as individual nanotubes, reducing percolation threshold as a result. However, the values of apparent diffusivities of the composites are in same order with that of self‐diffusion coefficients of the neat PP, indicating that the presence of detached CNTs nearly does not inhibit PP chain motion. Hence, the activation energy of hybrid formation is close to the self‐diffusion of PP. This also indicates that although addition of mPP can improve the compatibility between CNTs and PP thermodynamically, those dynamic factors, such as shear flow, however, may be the dominant role on hybrid formation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An intumescent flame retardant system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) was used for flame retarding ethylene–propylene–diene‐modified elastomer (EPDM)/polypropylene (PP) blends. Cerium phosphate (CeP) was synthesized and the effect on flame retardancy and thermal stability of EPDM/PP composites based on intumescent flame retardant (IFR) were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, and thermogravimetic analysis (TGA), respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) were used to analyze the morphological structure and the component of the residue chars formed from the EPDM/PP composites, and the mechanical properties of the materials were also studied. The addition of CeP to the EPDM/PP/APP/PER composites gives better flame retardancy than that of EPDM/PP/APP/PER composites. TGA and RT‐FTIR studies indicated that an interaction occurs among APP, PER, and EPDM/PP. The incorporation of CeP improved the mechanical properties of the materials. Carboxyl multi‐wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs‐COOH) were grafted by diaminopropyl terminated dimethylpolysiloxane (DPD) to the modified MWNTs‐COOH (MWNTs‐DPD). The surface structure and thermal stability of MWNTs‐DPD and MWNTs‐COOH were characterized using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Then PC/MWNTs‐COOH and PC/MWNTs‐DPD nanocomposites were prepared by the solution method and melt extrusion method. The mechanical properties, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), TGA, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, and permittivity test were used to evaluate the properties of the composites. The results showed that the MWNTs‐DPD was dispersed well in the PC matrix, and its tensile strength, flexual strength, flexural modulus, and flame retardancy were better than that of PC/MWNTs‐COOH. MWNTs‐DPD can improve the electrical properties of the nanocomposites at the low loading in PC. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Nanosized carbon black (CB) was introduced into polypropylene/maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefin elastomer/intumescent flame retardant (PP/POE-MA/IFR) system to investigate the effect of nanofiller as synergist on thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of polymer composites. With 5 mass% CB into PP/POE-MA/IFR system (POFC5), the Tmax (corresponded to the temperature at the maximum mass loss rate) under air was increased by 122.4 °C; its limited oxygen index was as high as 31.4%; its vertical burning rating (UL-94) reached V0, and the peak value of heat release rate was decreased to only 19% of neat PP in cone calorimeter testing. Moreover, PP composites exhibited good electrical conductivity with more than 1.6 mass% CB, which is a low loading level to reach the critical percolation concentration. In addition, a good balance on stiffness and toughness of PP composites was achieved; especially, Young’s moduli and impact strength of POFC5 were increased to 1.26 and 2.5 times in comparison with that of neat PP, respectively. These results indicated that CB was an effective synergist in multi-component PP composites to simultaneously improve thermal, electrical and mechanical properties.

The thermal and flame performances of intumescent flame retarded polypropylene (PP/IFR) composites with organically modified clay or sodium dodecyl sulfonate intercalated layered double hydroxide (SDS-LDH) were studied. The organo-clay particles were partially exfoliated in the PP matrix, while intercalation and aggregation was obtained for SDS-LDH. Incorporation of SDS-LDH improved the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the intumescent flame retarded PP composite in the early stage of heating and combustion; while the effects of organo-clay came into play in the middle-later stage. Differences in degradation pathway of clay and LDH were responsible for the above phenomenon which bore important implication for the barrier mechanism. The introduction of organo-clay into PP/IFR not only increased the char residue, but also formed compact and folded morphology of char residue which provided more effective protect for underlying materials against heat and oxygen relative to LDH, thus improved the flame retardancy of intumescent flame retarded PP samples more efficiently.  相似文献

The synergistic effect of 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO) immobilized silica (SiO2‐DOPO) nanoparticles with an intumescent flame retardant (IFR) on the flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP) was investigated by UL 94 vertical tests and limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurements. It was found that the PP/IFR composites (25 wt%) achieved the UL94 V0 grade and LOI increased to 32.1 with an incorporation of 1.0 wt% SiO2‐DOPO nanoparticles. Based on thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electronic microscopy and rheological analysis, it is speculated that three factors are mainly contributed to the improvement of the flame retardancy. First, the thermal stability of PP/IFR composites was improved by incorporating SiO2‐DOPO nanoparticles. Second, the presence of SiO2‐DOPO nanoparticles could induce the formation of a continuous char skin layer during combustion. The compact char layer could effectively impede the transport of bubbles and heat. Third, rheological analysis indicated that SiO2‐DOPO nanoparticles could increase viscosity of the PP/IFR composites, which was also benefited to increase flame retardancy. Functionalized carbon nanotubes (F‐CNTs) were synthesized through the nucleophilic substitution reaction between four‐armed star poly(d ‐lactide) (4PDLA) and acryl chloride of carbon nanotubes and were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicated that the 4PDLA was successfully grafted onto carbon nanotubes, and it contained 45.5 wt% of 4PDLA. Poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA) nanocomposites with different F‐CNTs content were prepared by solution casting. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy results showed that F‐CNTs were uniformly dispersed in the nanocomposites. Crystallization behavior and crystal structure of PLLA nanocomposites were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscope and X‐ray diffraction. The results found that poly(lactide) stereocomplex crystal could be formed between PLLA and F‐CNTs. F‐CNTs played different roles in the process of solution casting and melting crystallization. Polarizing microscope also revealed that crystallization temperature had a significant effect on the nucleation and spherulites growth of PLLA. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were also investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile testing. These results demonstrated that the addition of F‐CNTs obviously improved thermal stability and tensile strength of PLLA. The results showed that PLLA/F‐CNTs would have potential values in engineering fields. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Sb2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized via a simple surfactant-free sonochemical reaction. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) have been successfully functionalized with amino groups. Cellulose acetate (CA) as a polymeric matrix was choosing in this work. In order to improve the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the CA, nanoparticles, aminated-MWCNT and trichloromelamine (TCM) were added to the polymeric matrix. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UL-94 analysis. Flame retardancy of the nanocomposite was improved as a result of synergistic effect between Sb2O3 and TCM. Result show that thermal decomposition of the nanocomposites was shifted towards higher temperatures.  相似文献
