The photopolymerization process of acrylate coatings initiated by visible light (λ > 380 nm) and performed in air was studied in the presence of zirconium complexes. Depth profiling experiments were performed using confocal Raman microscopy showing that the conversion, which is low at the surface of the sample, increases with increasing depth and reaches a full conversion close to the substrate. RT‐FTIR spectroscopy corroborates Raman results in evidencing the efficiency of some zirconium compounds to reduce oxygen inhibition. Finally, laser flash photolysis experiments revealed that the beneficial effect in air is attributable to the reaction of the zirconium complex on the peroxyl radicals formed from the reaction of oxygen with radicals. Therefore, the oxygen present in the medium is depleted, allowing a better efficiency of the photopolymerization process. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

The overall effects of oxygen on thiol–acrylate photopolymerizations were characterized. Specially, the choice of thiol monomer chemistry, functionality, and concentration on the extent of oxygen inhibition were considered. As thiol concentration was increased, the degree of oxygen inhibition was greatly reduced because of chain transfer from the peroxy radical to the thiol. When comparing the copolymerization of 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate with the alkane‐based thiol (1,6‐hexane dithiol) to the copolymerization with the propionate thiol (glycol dimercaptopropionate), it was found that the propionate system was much more reactive and polymerized to a greater extent in the presence of oxygen. In addition, the functionality was considered where the glycol dimercaptopropionate was compared to a tetrafunctional propionate of similar chemistry (pentaerythritol tetrakis(mercaptopropionate)). Given the same thiol concentration, the higher functionality thiol imparted a faster polymerization rate, due to the increased polymer system viscosity, which limited oxygen diffusion and decreased the extent of overall oxygen inhibition. Thus, preliminary insight is provided into how thiol monomer choice affects the extent of oxygen inhibition in thiol–acrylate photopolymerization. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photocurable, ternary‐component mixtures of a 1:1 molar multifunctional thiol–ene (trithiol and triallyl ether) blend and a 16‐functional acrylate based monomer have been photopolymerized, and the final film properties of the ternary crosslinked networks have been measured. The photopolymerization kinetics, morphology, and mechanical and physical properties of the films have been investigated with real‐time infrared, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The photopolymerization process is a combination of acrylate homopolymerization and copolymerizations of thiol with allyl ether and acrylate functionalities. The tan δ peaks of the photopolymerized ternary systems are relatively narrow and tunable over a large temperature range. The morphology is characterized by a distinct phase‐separated nanostructure. The photocured thiol–ene/acrylate ternary systems can be made to exhibit good mechanical properties with enhanced energy absorption at room temperature by the appropriate selection of each component concentration. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Here we demonstrate that acrylates exhibit significant rate reductions in the presence of small concentrations of protic acids (0.1–0.5 wt %) compared with the bulk monomer concentration. Dramatically different sensitivities to acid inhibition, differing by up to 2 orders of magnitude, are exhibited for various acrylates. This study examines the various factors that cause enhanced sensitivity toward acid inhibition in novel acrylates characterized by carbamate and cyclic carbonate secondary functionalities. Acid inhibition studies conducted in the presence of a highly polar solvent, such as propylene carbonate, have been performed to determine the impact of overall medium polarity and the extent of acid dissociation on the sensitivity to acid inhibition. The studies depict only a twofold increase in the parameters associated with acid inhibition, upon the addition of 70 wt % propylene carbonate, in comparison with an increase of 2 orders of magnitude for the novel acrylates. These studies indicate that the susceptibility to acid inhibition is primarily determined by the stability of the hypothesized radical–acid complex as well as its propensity to terminate with other species in the system and not by the extent of acid dissociation in the system. Furthermore, it is implied that the stability of the radical–acid complex and its propensity to terminate with other species in the system are dominated by intramolecular interactions. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes a new method for the quantitative determination and time‐resolved monitoring of the polymerization shrinkage during ultraviolet (UV) photopolymerization. It is based on rheometry using a modified oscillating rheometer. Shrinkage is determined from the decrease of the gap between the rheometer plates. Moreover, near‐infrared (NIR) spectra can be recorded directly in the rheometer, which allows continuous determination of the conversion at any time of a shrinkage measurement. As both shrinkage and conversion data come from the same experiment, shrinkage can be analyzed in dependence on the current conversion achieved during UV irradiation, which enables direct investigation of correlations between both parameters. Hyphenated photorheometry/FT‐NIR spectroscopy was used for the determination of the polymerization shrinkage of pure acrylate monomers and oligomers as well as acrylate‐based formulations. Quantitative shrinkage values were found to be in excellent correlation with data that were determined by an independent method (via buoyancy measurements) and data from literature. Furthermore, the effect of ambient and irradiation conditions or the content of nanoparticles on the degree of shrinkage was studied. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Triphenylphosphine (TPP) was used in free‐radical UV‐curable resins to reduce oxygen inhibition effect. The relative influence of concentration, monomer viscosity, light intensity and sample thickness on TPP efficiency was investigated by real time infrared spectroscopy. It is shown that TPP is an effective oxygen scavenger. The mechanism was investigated by means of Laser Flash Photolysis. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the chemical structure on the reactivity of alkenes used in thiol–ene photopolymerizations has been investigated with real‐time infrared spectroscopy. Model studies of thiol–ene photoreactions with various monofunctional hydrocarbon alkenes and the monofunctional thiol ethyl‐3‐mercaptopropionate have been performed to identify and understand structure–reactivity relationships. The results demonstrate that terminal enes react very rapidly with thiol, achieve complete conversion, and are independent of the aliphatic hydrocarbon substituent length. Disubstitution on a single carbon of a terminal ene significantly reduces the reactivity, whereas substitution on the carbon α to the terminal ene has a minimal influence on the reactivity. Internal trans enes display reduced reactivity and a lower overall conversion and deviate from the standard thiol–ene reaction mechanism because of steric strain induced by 1,3‐interactions. The reactivity and conversion of internal trans enes decrease as the substituents on the ene become larger, reaching a minimum when the substituent size is greater than or equal to that of propyl groups. Internal cis enes react rapidly with thiol; however, they undergo a fast isomerization–elimination reaction sequence generating the trans ene, which proceeds to react at a reduced rate with thiol. The reactivity of cyclic enes is dictated by ring strain, stereoelectronic effects, and hydrogen abstractability. The reactivity trends in the model studies have been used to explain the photopolymerization mechanism and kinetics of a series of multifunctional thiol–ene systems. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. UV stabilizers (UV absorbers and Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers‐HALS) are added to UV‐curable formulations to provide long‐term durability. The influence of HALS and the filtering effect of UV absorbers are investigated under UV and LED irradiation by using different photoinitiating systems in free radical photopolymerization. The contribution of irradiation conditions and initiating systems on the filtering effect is discussed by performing Real‐Time Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (RT‐FTIR) and Confocal Raman Microscopy. Additionally, to get quantitative information about the light absorbed by the photoinitiator, without and with the filtering issue arising from UV stabilizers, series of calculations are carried out by taking into account the amount of light absorbed by the compounds and the intensity of the incident light. Finally, formulations are optimized with respect to surface inhibition to obtain tack free coatings in air atmosphere in the presence of UV stabilizers under visible light. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Free‐radical photocurable hybrid sol–gel materials have gained special interest during the last decades. Compared to thermally processed materials, they present the advantages of fast curing, low energy consumption, and spatiotemporal control of the reaction. Although comprehension of the photochemical step is fundamental, little is known about the characteristic of photochemistry in this kind of material. Real‐time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to study the photopolymerization of a hybrid sol–gel upon ultraviolet irradiation. Various photoinitiator systems were tested for their efficiency in inducing the polymerization of pendant polymerizable moieties anchored on a partially condensed silicate network. The presence of O2 and the nature of the polymerizable function were shown to be crucial factors in the photoinduced process. The effects of the photoinitiator concentration and light intensity were also studied. These results were explained in terms of classical kinetic models developed for all‐organic photopolymers to point out the distinctive aspects related to the use of photoinitiated polymerization in hybrid sol–gel materials. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel catalyst system based on La(0)/hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) complexes is used for single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of ascorbic acid (VC) with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) as a initiator and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent. Compared with SET‐LRP of AN in the absence of VC, monomer conversion is markedly increased. SET‐LRP of AN in the presence of VC is also conducted in the presence of air. The kinetic studies show that the polymerizations both in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of air proceed in a well‐controlled manner. With the respect to the polymerization in the absence of oxygen, the polymerization in the presence of air provides slower reaction rate and broader polydispersity. Effects of amount of VC, La, CCl4, and are investigated in detail. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 4088–4094  相似文献

Bimolecular termination in nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization in miniemulsion has been investigated through the heating of a polystyrene–2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy macroinitiator and its 4‐hydroxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy analogue in an aqueous toluene dispersion with sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate as a surfactant at 125 °C. The level of bimolecular termination by combination, evaluated from the high‐molecular‐weight shoulder, was higher in miniemulsion than in solution and increased with decreasing particle size. Quantitative analysis revealed that these results cannot be rationalized solely by nitroxide partitioning to the aqueous phase. The results are explained by an interface effect, by which nitroxide is adsorbed or located at the aqueous–organic interface. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A method is presented by which the time‐dependent average termination rate coefficient in an emulsion polymerization may be calculated as an appropriate average of the chain‐length‐dependent termination rate coefficients. The method takes advantage of the fact that the overall termination rate is dominated by terminations between rapidly moving short radicals and much slower long ones. This termination rate coefficient is suitable for use in the Smith–Ewart equations describing the compartmentalization of radicals in an emulsion polymerization. Rate data in emulsion polymerizations can be quantitatively interpreted if the kinetics fall into one of two categories: zero–one (showing compartmentalization; intraparticle termination is not rate‐determining) or pseudo‐bulk (no compartmentalization; intraparticle termination is rate‐determining). The new method can be used to interpret rate data for systems falling between these categories and also can be used to find termination rate coefficients from Monte Carlo simulations of termination kinetics. The latter is especially useful for predicting and understanding kinetics in controlled radical polymerizations in disperse media. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Living polymerization of styrene was observed using γ radiation as a source of initiation and 1‐phenylethyl phenyldithioacetate as a reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent. The γ radiation had little or no detrimental effect on the RAFT agent, with the molecular weight of the polymer increasing linearly with conversion (up to the maximum measured conversions of 30%). The polymerization had kinetics (polym.) consistent with those of a living polymerization (first order in monomer) and proportional to the square root of the radiation‐dose rate. This initiation technique may facilitate the grafting of narrow polydispersity, well‐defined polymers onto existing polymer surfaces as well as allow a wealth of kinetic experiments using the constant radical flux generated by γ radiation. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Chain transfer to solvent has been investigated in the conventional radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP) of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) at 120 °C. The extent of chain transfer to DMF can significantly impact the maximum attainable molecular weight in both systems. Based on a theoretical treatment, it has been shown that the same value of chain transfer to solvent constant, Ctr,S, in DMF at 120 °C (within experimental error) can account for experimental molecular weight data for both conventional radical polymerization and NMP under conditions where chain transfer to solvent is a significant end‐forming event. In NMP (and other controlled/living radical polymerization systems), chain transfer to solvent is manifested as the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) going through a maximum value with increasing monomer conversion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, living radical polymerizations of a water‐soluble monomer poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacylate (PEGMA) in bulk with low‐toxic iron catalyst system, including iron chloride hexahydrate and triphenylphosphine, were carried out successfully. Effect of reaction temperature and catalyst concentration on the polymerization of PEGMA was investigated. The polymerization kinetics showed the features of “living”/controlled radical polymerization. For example, Mn,GPC values of the resultant polymers increased linearly with monomer conversion. A faster polymerization of PEGMA could be obtained in the presence of a reducing agent Fe(0) wire or ascorbic acid. In the case of Fe(0) wire as the reducing agent, a monomer conversion of 80% was obtained in 80 min of reaction time at 90 °C, yielding a water‐soluble poly(PEGMA) with Mn = 65,500 g mol?1 and Mw/Mn = 1.39. The features of “living”/controlled radical polymerization of PEGMA were verified by analysis of chain‐end and chain‐extension experiments. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene initiated with freshly prepared p‐toluenesulfonyl iodide (TsI) and catalyzed with CuX/2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy), where X is Cl, Br, or I, and various self‐regulated copper‐based catalytic systems, such as copper/bpy, copper(I) oxide/bpy, copper(I) sulfide/bpy, copper(I) selenide/bpy, and copper(I) telluride/bpy, is reported. The exchange of C? I into C? Br and C? Cl takes place when the living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate is catalyzed by copper(I) bromide/bpy and copper(I) chloride/bpy, respectively. Therefore, the use of the TsI initiator facilitates the synthesis, starting from a single initiator, of poly(methyl methacrylate) containing C? I, C? Br, and C? Cl chain ends. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 3920–3931, 2005  相似文献

Semibatch starved‐feed solution copolymerization is used to produce acrylic resins for coatings formulations. Mechanisms and rate coefficients for polymerization of methacrylates, acrylates, and styrene (ST) under these high‐temperature conditions are reviewed. An extended set of experimental results at 138 °C is used to refine a model describing the solution copolymerization of ST and methacrylates. The data suggest that both changing initiator efficiency and transfer reactions of oxygen‐centered radicals to polymer affect the development of polymer molecular weight. A penultimate model is used to describe the variation in termination rate coefficient with copolymer composition. Significant progress has been made to develop an extended model capable of representing multicomponent high‐temperature acrylic polymerizations.

The evolution of the bromine end functionality during the bulk atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene [in the presence of the catalyst CuBr/4,4′‐di‐(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine] was monitored with 600‐MHz 1H NMR. A decrease in the functionality versus the conversion was observed. The loss of functionality was especially significant at very high conversions (>90%). The experimental data were compared with a kinetic model of styrene ATRP. The latter indicated that the loss of chain‐end functionality was partly due to bimolecular terminations but was mainly due to β‐H elimination reactions induced by the copper(II) deactivator. These elimination reactions, which occurred later in the reaction, did not significantly affect the polymer molecular weights and the polydispersity. Therefore, a linear evolution of the molecular weights and low‐polydispersity polymers were still observed, despite a loss of functionality. Understanding these side reactions helped in the selection of the proper conditions for reducing the contribution of the elimination process and for preparing well‐defined polystyrene (number‐average molecular weight ~10,000 g mol?1; weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight ~1.1) with a high functionality (92%). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mechanisms and simulations of the induction period and the initial polymerization stages in the nitroxide‐mediated autopolymerization of styrene are discussed. At 120–125 °C and moderate 2,2,4,4‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) concentrations (0.02–0.08 M), the main source of radicals is the hydrogen abstraction of the Mayo dimer by TEMPO [with the kinetic constant of hydrogen abstraction (kh)]. At higher TEMPO concentrations ([N?] > 0.1 M), this reaction is still dominant, but radical generation by the direct attack against styrene by TEMPO, with kinetic constant of addition kad, also becomes relevant. From previous experimental data and simulations, initial estimates of kh ≈ 1 and kad ≈ 6 × 10?7 L mol?1 s?1 are obtained at 125 °C. From the induction period to the polymerization regime, there is an abrupt change in the dominant mechanism generating radicals because of the sudden decrease in the nitroxide radicals. Under induction‐period conditions, the simulations confirm the validity of the quasi‐steady‐state assumption (QSSA) for the Mayo dimer in this regime; however, after the induction period, the QSSA for the dimer is not valid, and this brings into question the scientific basis of the well‐known expression kth[M]3 (where [M] is the monomer concentration and kth is the kinetic constant of autoinitiation) for the autoinitiation rate in styrene polymerization. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
