Sulfonated fluorinated multiblock copolymers based on high performance polymers were synthesized and evaluated for use as proton exchange membranes (PEMs). The multiblock copolymers consist of fully disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) and partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether ketone) as hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, respectively. Synthesis of the multiblock copolymers was achieved by a condensation coupling reaction between controlled molecular weight hydrophilic and hydrophobic oligomers. The coupling reaction could be conducted at relatively low temperatures (e.g., 105 °C) by utilizing highly reactive hexafluorobenzene (HFB) as a linkage group. The low coupling reaction temperature could prevent a possible trans‐etherification, which can randomize the hydrophilic‐hydrophobic sequences. Tough ductile membranes were prepared by solution casting and their membrane properties were evaluated. With similar ion exchange capacities (IECs), proton conductivity and water uptake were strongly influenced by the hydrophilic and hydrophobic block sequence lengths. Conductivity and water uptake increased with increasing block length by developing nanophase separated morphologies. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments revealed that the connectivity of the hydrophilic segments was enhanced by increasing the block length. The systematic synthesis and characterization of the copolymers are reported. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 214–222, 2010  相似文献

Partially disulfonated hydroquinone (HQ)‐based poly(arylene ether sulfone) random copolymers were synthesized and characterized for application as proton exchange membranes. The copolymer composition was varied in the degree of disulfonation. The copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and other analytical techniques. The copolymer with a 25% degree of disulfonation showed the best balance between water uptake and proton conductivity. The copolymers showed substantially reduced methanol permeability compared with Nafion® and satisfactory direct methanol fuel cell performance. The methanol selectivity improved significantly in comparison to Nafion® 117. At a given ionic composition, the HQ‐based system showed higher water uptake and proton conductivity than the biphenol‐based (BPSH‐xx) poly(arylene ether sulfone)s copolymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers bearing perfluorosulfonic functions (ps‐PES‐FPES), with ionic exchange capacity (IEC) ranging between 0.9 and 1.5 meq H+/g, are synthesized by regioselective bromination of partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers (PES‐FPES), followed by Ullman coupling reaction with lithium 1,1,2,2‐tetrafluoro‐2‐(1,1,2,2‐tetrafluoro‐2‐iodoethoxy)ethanesulfonate. The PES‐FPES are prepared by aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction by an original approach, that is, “one pot two reactions synthesis.” The chemical structures of polymers are analyzed by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The resulted ionomers present two distinct glass transitions and α relaxations revealing phase separation between the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic domains. The phase separation is observed at much lower block lengths of ps‐PES‐FPES as compared with the literature. AFM and SANS observations supported the phase separation, the hydrophilic domains are well dispersed but the connectivity to each other depends on the ps‐PES block lengths. The thermomechanical behavior, the water up‐take, and the conductivity of the ps‐PES‐FPES membranes are compared with those of Nafion 117® and randomly functionalized polysulfone (ps‐PES). Conductivities close or higher to those of Nafion 117® are obtained. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 1941–1956  相似文献

Hydrophilic/hydrophobic block copolymers as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) has become an emerging area of research in recent years. These copolymers were obtained through moderate temperature (~ 100 °C) coupling reactions, which minimize the ether‐ether interchanges between hydrophobic and hydrophilic telechelic oligomers via a nucleophilic aromatic substitution mechanism. The hydrophilic blocks were based on the nucleophilic step polymerization of 3,3′‐disulfonated, 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone with an excess 4,4′‐biphenol to afford phenoxide endgroups. The hydrophobic (fluorinated) blocks were largely based on decafluoro biphenyl (excess) and various bisphenols. The copolymers were obtained in high molecular weights and were solvent cast into tough membranes, which had nanophase separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions. The performance and structure‐property relationships of these materials were studied and compared to random copolymer systems. NMR results supported that the multiblock sequence had been achieved. They displayed superior proton conductivity, due to the ionic proton conducting channels formed through the self‐assembly of the sulfonated blocks. The nano‐phase separated morphologies of the copolymer membranes were studied and confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Through control of a variety of parameters, including ion exchange capacity and sequence lengths, performances as high, or even higher than those of the state‐of‐the‐art PEM, Nafion, were achieved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A sulfonimide‐containing comonomer derived from 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenylsulfone was synthesized and copolymerized with 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenylsulfone and 4,4′‐biphenol to prepare sulfonimide‐containing poly(arylene ether sulfone) random copolymers (BPSIs). These copolymers showed slightly higher water uptake than disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymer (BPSH) controls, but their proton‐conductivity values were very comparable to those of the BPSH series with similar ion contents. The proton conductivity increased with the temperature for both systems. For samples with 30 mol % ionic groups, BPSI showed less temperature dependence in proton conductivity and slightly higher methanol permeability in comparison with BPSH. The thermal characterization of the sulfonimide copolymers showed that both the acid and salt forms were stable up to 250 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The results suggested that the presumed enhanced stability of the sulfonimide systems did not translate into higher protonic conductivity in liquid water. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanophase‐separated, hydrophilic–hydrophobic multiblock copolymers are promising proton‐exchange‐membrane materials because of their ability to form various morphological structures that enhance transport. A series of poly(2,5‐benzophenone)‐activated, telechelic aryl fluoride oligomers with different block molecular weights were successfully synthesized by the Ni(0)‐catalyzed coupling of 2,5‐dichlorobenzophenone and the end‐capping agent 4‐chloro‐4′‐fluorobenzophenone. These telechelic oligomers (hydrophobic) were then copolymerized with phenoxide‐terminated, disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (hydrophilic) by nucleophilic, aromatic substitution to form hydrophilic–hydrophobic multiblock copolymers. High‐molecular‐weight multiblock copolymers with number‐average block lengths ranging from 3000 to 10,000 g/mol were successfully synthesized. Two separate glass‐transition temperatures were observed via differential scanning calorimetry in the transparent multiblock copolymer films when each block length was longer than 6000 g/mol. Tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy also showed clear nanophase separation between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains and the influence of the block length as it increased from 6000 to 10,000 g/mol. Transparent and creasable films were solvent‐cast and exhibited moderate proton conductivity and low water uptake. These copolymers are promising candidates for high‐temperature proton‐exchange membranes in fuel cells, which will be reported separately in part II of this series. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new bisphenol monomer containing a pair of electron‐rich tetra‐arylmethane units was designed and synthesized. Based on this monomer, along with commercial 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphenol A and 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone, a series of novel poly(arylene ether ketone)s containing octasulfonated segments of varying molar percentage (x) (6F‐SPAEK‐x) were successfully synthesized by polycondensation reactions, followed by sulfonation. Tough, flexible, and transparent membranes, exhibiting excellent thermal stabilities and mechanical properties were obtained by casting. 6F‐SPAEK‐x samples exhibited appropriate water uptake and swelling ratios at moderate ion exchange capacities (IECs) and excellent proton conductivities. The highest proton conductivity (215 mS cm−1) is observed for hydrated 6F‐SPAEK‐15 (IEC = 1.68 meq g−1) at 100 °C, which is more than 1.5 times that of Nafion 117. Furthermore, the 6F‐SPAEK‐10 membrane exhibited comparable proton conductivity (102 mS cm−1) to that of Nafion 117 at 80 °C, with a relatively low IEC value (1.26 meq g−1). Even under 30% relative humidity, the 6F‐SPAEK‐20 membrane (2.06 meq g−1) showed adequate conductivity (2.1 mS cm−1) compared with Nafion 117 (3.4 mS cm−1). The excellent comprehensive properties of these membranes are attributed to well‐defined nanophase‐separated structures promoted by strong polarity differences between highly ionized and fluorinated hydrophobic segments. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(arylene ether sulfone)‐block‐sulfonated polybutadiene (PAES‐b‐sPB) with different ion exchange capacities (IECs) were synthesized and evaluated as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for possible applications in fuel cells. These sulfonated block copolymers were synthesized via condensation reaction between modified PAES and PB prepolymers, followed by selective post‐sulfonation of PB blocks using acetyl sulfate as the sulfonating reagent. The sulfonic groups were only attached onto PB blocks due to the high reactivity of double bonds to acetyl sulfate. The success of synthesis and selective post‐sulfonation were all confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. PAES‐b‐sPB had good film‐forming ability and thermal stability. Mechanical properties of membranes varied with the sulfonation. The presence of sulfonic groups increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus but decreased the elongation at break. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed large ionic aggregates in membranes. Phase separation as well as the interconnected sulfonate groups which only localized on flexible PB blocks led to these ionic domains. The proton conductivity increased with the increasing IEC and temperature. With relatively low IEC, most membranes still exhibited sufficient proton conductivity. The above results indicated this strategy could be a prospective choice to prepare novel PEMs. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Hyperbranched poly(ether sulfone) was prepared in the presence of an oligomeric linear poly(ether sulfone) to generate multiblock hyperbranched‐linear (LxHB) copolymers. The LxHB copolymers were prepared in a two‐step, one‐pot synthesis by first polymerizing AB monomer to generate a linear block of a desired molecular weight followed by addition of the AB2 monomer in a large excess (19:1, AB2:AB) to generate the hyperbranched block. NMR integration analysis indicates that AB2:AB ratio is independent of the reaction time. Because the molecular weight still increases with reaction time, these results suggest that polymer growth continues after consumption of monomer by condensation into a multiblock architecture. The LxHB poly(ether sulfone)s have better thermal stability (10% mass loss > 343 vs. 317 °C) and lower Tg (200 vs. > 250 °C) than the hyperbranched homopolymer, higher Tg than the linear homopolymer (<154 °C), while little difference in the solubility character was observed between the two polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel biphenol‐based wholly aromatic poly (arylene ether sulfones) containing pendant sulfonate groups were prepared by direct aromatic nucleophilic substitution polycondensation of disodium 3,3′‐disulfonate‐4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (SDCDPS), 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenylsulfone (DCDPS) and biphenol. Copolymerization proceeded quantitatively to high molecular weight in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone at 190°C in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. Tough membranes were successfully cast from the control and the copolymers, which had a SDCDPS/DCDPS mole ratio of either 40:60 or 60:40 using N,N‐dimethylactamide; the 100% SDCDPS homopolymer was water soluble. Short‐term aging (30 min) indicates that the desired acid form membranes are stable to 220°C in air and conductivity values at 25°C of 0.110 (40%) and 0.170 S/cm (60%) were measured, which are comparable to or higher than the state‐of‐the art fluorinated copolymer Nafion 1135 control. The new copolymers, which contain ion conductivity sites on deactivated rings, are candidates as new polymeric electrolyte materials for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Further research comparing their membrane behavior to post‐sulfonated systems is in progress.  相似文献

A series of block sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) (SPAEK) copolymers with different block lengths and ionic contents were synthesized by a two‐stage process. The morphology of these block SPAEK copolymers was investigated by various methods, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). Dark colored ionic domains of hundreds of nanometers spreading as a cloud‐like belt were observed in TEM images. The sizes of the ionic domains as a function of block copolymer composition were determined from SAXS curves. The results for the evolution of ionic domains revealed that the block copolymers exhibited more clearly phase‐separated microstructure with increasing ionic contents and hydrophobic sequence lengths. Proton conductivity is closely related to the microstructure, especially the presence of large interconnected ionic domains or ionic channels. Block SPAEK membranes have interconnected ionic clusters to provide continuous hydrophilic channels, resulting in higher proton conductivity. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Direct aromatic nucleophilic substitution polycondensations of disodium 3,3′‐disulfonate‐4,4′‐difluorodiphenylsulfone (SDFDPS), 4,4′‐difluorodiphenylsulfone (DFDPS) (or their chlorinated analogs), and 4,4′‐thiobisbenzenethiol in the presence of potassium carbonate were investigated. Electrophilic aromatic substitution was employed to synthesize the SDFDPS comonomer in high yields and purity. High molecular weight disulfonated copolymers were easily obtained using the SDFDPS monomers, but in general, slower rates and a lower molecular weight copolymer were obtained using the analogous chlorinated monomers. Tough and ductile membranes were solution cast from N,N‐dimethylacetamide for both series of copolymers. The degrees of disulfonation (20–50%) were controlled by varying the ratio of disulfonated to unsulfonated comonomers. Precise control of the ionic concentration, well‐defined ionic locations, and enhanced stability due to the deactivated position of the –SO3H group are some of the suggested advantages of direct copolymerization of sulfonated monomers. Further publications will discuss additional characteristics of these copolymers that have the same repeat unit, but different molecular weights, using methanol permeability, water uptake, protonic conductivity, and dynamic mechanical analysis. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sulfonated poly(ether sulfone)s containing binaphthyl units (BNSHs) were successfully prepared for fuel cell application. BNSHs, which have very simple structures, were easily synthesized by postsulfonation of poly(1,1′‐dinaphthyl ether phenyl sulfone)s and gave tough, flexible, and transparent membranes by solvent casting. The BNSH membranes showed low water uptake compared to a typical sulfonated poly(ether ether sulfone) (BPSH‐40) membrane with a similar ion exchange capacity (IEC) value and water insolubility, even with a high IEC values of 3.19 mequiv/g because of their rigid and bulky structures. The BNSH‐100 membrane (IEC = 3.19 mequiv/g) exhibited excellent proton conductivity, which was comparable to or even higher than that of Nafion 117, over a range of 30–95% relative humidity (RH). The excellent proton conductivity, especially under low RH conditions, suggests that the BNSH‐100 membrane has excellent proton paths because of its high IEC value, and water insolubility due to the high hydrophobicity of the binaphthyl structure. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A bisphenol monomer (2,5‐dimethoxy)phenylhydroquinone was prepared and further polymerized to obtain poly(arylene ether ketone) copolymers containing methoxy groups. After demethylation and sulfobutylation, a series of novel poly(arylene ether ketone)s bearing pendant sulfonic acid group (SPAEKs) with different sulfonation content were obtained. The chemical structures of all the copolymers were analyzed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. Flexible and tough membranes with reasonably good mechanical properties were prepared. The resulting side‐chain‐type SPAEK membranes showed good dimensional stability, and their water uptake and swelling ratio were lower than those of conventional main‐chain‐type SPAEK membranes with similar ion exchange capacity. Proton conductivities of these side‐chain‐type sulfonated copolymers were higher than 0.01 S/cm and increased gradually with increasing temperature. Their methanol permeability values were in the range of 1.97 × 10?7–5.81 × 10?7 cm2/s, which were much lower than that of Nafion 117. A combination of suitable proton conductivities, low water uptake, low swelling ratio, and high methanol resistance for these side‐chain‐type SPAEK films indicated that they may be good candidate material for proton exchange membrane in fuel cell applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel sulfonated poly(arylene ether) containing tetraphenylmethane moieties was successfully synthesized by the sulfonation of a designed parent polymer using chlorosulfonic acid as sulfonation agent. The sulfonation took place only at the para position on the pendant phenyl rings because of the specially designed parent polymer. The sulfonation degree can be easily controlled by using different ratios of sulfonation agent to polymer repeating unit. The position and degree of sulfonation were characterized by 1H NMR and elemental analysis. The sulfonated polymers are highly soluble in common organic solvents, such as dimethylsulfoxide, N,N′‐dimethylacetamide, dimethylformamide, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and can be readily cast into tough and smooth films from solutions. The films showed good thermal and hydrolysis stabilities. Moreover, Fenton's reagent test revealed that the membrane exhibited superior stability to oxidation. The proton conductivities of the films were determined to be equivalent with Nafion® 117 under same conditions. The new polymer with sulfonic acid function on pendent phenyl rings can be potentially used as a proton‐exchange membrane for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of sulfonated multiblock copoly(ether sulfone)s applicable to proton exchange membrane fuel cells was synthesized. The multiblock copolymers were synthesized by the nucleophilic aromatic substitution of hydroxyl‐terminated oligomers in the presence of highly reactive decafluorobiphenyl (DFB) as a chain extender. Because of the high reactivity of DFB, the ether–ether interchange reaction, which could lead to a randomized polymer architecture, was prevented, and multiblock copolymers with high molecular weights were easily produced. The multiblock copolymers gave tough, flexible, and transparent membranes by solution casting. The ion exchange capacity values could be easily controlled by changing the sulfonated block ratios in the copolymers. The resulting membranes demonstrated good oxidative and dimensional stability and significantly higher proton conductivity than sulfonated random poly(ether sulfone) copolymers. The morphologies of the membranes were investigated by tapping mode atomic force microscopy, which showed that the multiblock membranes had a clear hydrophilic/hydrophobic separated structure. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Partially sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PESS) was synthesized and methacrylated via reaction with glycidyl methacrylate (PESSGMA) and cross‐linked via radical polymerization with styrene and vinyl‐phosphonic acid (VPA). The chemical structures of the synthesized pre‐polymers were characterized via FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic methods and molecular weight was determined via GPC. Membranes of these polymers were prepared via solution casting method. The crosslinking of the PESS polymer reduced IEC, proton conductivity, swelling in water, and methanol permeability of the membranes while increasing the modulus and the glass transition temperature. However, the introduction of the VPA comonomer increased the proton conductivity while maintaining excellent resistance to methanol cross‐over, which was significantly higher as compared with both PESS and the commercial Nafion membranes. Membranes of PESSGMA copolymers incorporating VPA, exhibited proton conductivity values at 60 °C in the range of 16–32 mS cm−1 and methanol permeability values in the range of 6.52 × 10−9 – 1.92 × 10−8 cm2 s−1. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As a novel class of proton exchange membrane materials for use in fuel cells, sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEKs) were prepared by the modification of poly(phthalazinone ether ketone). Sulfonation reactions were conducted at room temperature with mixtures of 95–98% concentrated sulfuric acid and 27–33% fuming sulfuric acid with different acid ratios, and SPPEK was obtained with a degree of sulfonation (DS) in the desired range of 0.6–1.2. The presence of sulfonic acid groups in SPPEK was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared analysis, and the DS and structures were characterized by NMR. The introduction of sulfonic groups into the polymer chains increased the glass‐transition temperature above the decomposition temperature and also led to an overall decrease in the decomposition temperature. Membrane films were cast from SPPEK solutions in N,N‐dimethylacetamide. Water uptakes and swelling ratios of SPPEK membrane films increased with DS, and SPPEKs with DS > 1.23 were water‐soluble at 80 °C. Proton conductivity increased with DS and temperature up to 95 °C, reaching 10?2S/cm. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 497–507, 2003  相似文献

Branched sulfonated poly(ether ketone sulfone)s (Br‐SPEKS) were prepared with bisphenol A, bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone, 3,3′‐disodiumsulfonyl‐4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone, and THPE (1,1,1‐tris‐p‐hydroxyphenylethane), respectively, at 180 °C using potassium carbonate in NMP (N‐methylpyrrolidinone). THPE, as a branching agent, was used with 0.4 mol % of bisphenol A to synthesize branched copolymers. Copolymers containing 10–50 mol % disulfonated units were cast from dimethylsulfoxide solutions to form films. Linear sulfonated poly(ether ketone sulfone)s (SPEKS) were also synthesized without THPE. The films were converted from the salt to acid forms with dilute hydrochloric acid. A series of copolymers were studied by Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Sorption experiments were conducted to observe the interaction of sulfonated polymers with water and methanol. The ion‐exchange capacity (IEC), a measure of proton conductivity, was evaluated. The synthesized Br‐SPEKS and SPEKS membranes exhibit conductivities (25 °C) from 1.04 × 10?3 to 4.32 × 10?3 S/cm, water swell from 20.18 to 62.35%, IEC from 0.24 to 0.83 mequiv/g, and methanol diffusion coefficients from 3.2 × 10?7 to 4.7 × 10?7 cm2/S at 25 °C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) (SPPEK) copolymers and sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone) (SPPES) copolymers containing pendant sodium sulfonate groups were prepared by direct copolymerization. The reaction of disodium 3,3′‐disulfonate‐4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone (SDFB‐Na), 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone (DFB), and 4‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐1(2H)‐phthalazinone (DHPZ) at 170 °C in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidione containing anhydrous potassium carbonate gave SPPEKs. SPPESs were similarly obtained with 3,3′‐disulfonate‐4,4′‐difluorophenyl sulfone, 4‐fluorophenyl sulfone (DFS), and DHPZ as monomers. The sulfonic acid groups, being on deactivated positions of the polymer backbone, were expected to be hydrolytically more stable than postsulfonated polymers. Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR were used to characterize the structures and degrees of sulfonation of the sulfonated polymers. Membrane films of SPPEKs with SDFB‐Na/DFB molar feed ratios of up to 60/40 and SPPESs with sulfonated 4‐fluorophenyl sulfone/DFS molar feed ratios of up to 50/50 were cast from N,N‐dimethylacetamide polymer solutions. Membrane films in acid form were then obtained by the treatment of the sodium‐form membrane films in 2 N sulfuric acid at room temperature. An increase in the number of sulfonate groups in the copolymers resulted in an increased glass‐transition temperature and enhanced membrane hydrophilicity. The sodium‐form copolymers were thermally more stable than their acid forms. The proton conductivities of the acid‐form copolymers with sulfonated monomer/unsulfonated monomer molar feed ratios of 0.5 and 0.6 were higher than 10?2 S/cm and increased with temperature; they were less temperature‐dependent than those of the postsulfonated products. SPPESH‐50 showed higher conductivity than the corresponding postsulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
