The electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites, based on polypropylene (PP) filled by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and organo-clay (OC), were studied with the purpose of finding out the effect of OC on the microstructure of MWCNTs dispersion and PP/MWCNT/OC composites. It was found that addition of organo-clay nanoparticles improved nanotube dispersion and enhanced electrical properties of PP/MWCNT nanocomposites. Addition of organo-clay (MWCNT/OC ratio was 1/1) reduced the percolation threshold of PP/MWCNT nanocomposites from ?c = 0.95 vol.% to ?c = 0.68 vol.% of carbon nanotubes, while the level of conductivity became 2–4 orders of magnitude higher. The DSC and DMA analyses have shown that the influence of organo-clay on the thermal and mechanical properties of material was not significant in composites with both fillers as compared to PP/OC. Such an effect can be caused by stronger interaction of OC with carbon nanotubes than with polymer matrix.  相似文献

Electrically and thermally conductive high‐density polyethylene composites filled with hybrid fillers, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and silver nanoparticles (Ag‐NPs), have been prepared in the melt state. The investigation of their electrical and thermal conductivities while comparing with high‐density polyethylene/MWCNT binary composites shows that the addition of only 3 vol% of Ag‐NPs does not reduce the electrical percolation threshold (Pc) that remains as low as 0.40 vol% of MWCNTs but leads to an increase in the maximum dc electrical conductivity of PE/MWCNT composites by two orders of magnitudes. Moreover, the association of both Ag‐NPs and carbon nanotube particles improved our composite's thermal conductivity. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Core–shell carboxyl‐functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube (c‐MWCNT)/poly(m‐aminophenol) (PmAP) nanocomposite were prepared through in‐situ polymerization of m‐aminophenol (m‐AP) in the presence of MWCNTs, and explicated as a dielectric material for electronic applications. The formation of thin PmAP layer on individual c‐MWCNT with excellent molecular level interactions at interfaces was confirmed by morphological and spectroscopic analyses. Here we conducted a comparative study of the dielectric performances of PmAP based nanocomposite films with pristine MWCNTs and c‐MWCNTs as fillers. Compared to PmAP/MWCNT nanocomposites, the PmAP/c‐MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited higher dielectric permittivity and lower dielectric loss. The well dispersed c‐MWCNTs in PmAP/c‐MWCNT nanocomposite produce huge interfacial area together with numerous active polarized centers (crystallographic defects), which in turn intensified the Maxwell‐Wagner‐Sillars (MWS) effect based on excellent molecular level interactions and thus, produce large dielectric permittivity (8810 at 1 kHz). The percolation threshold of PmAP/c‐MWCNT nanocomposites is found lower than that of the PmAP/MWCNT nanocomposites, which could be attributed to homogeneous distribution of c‐MWCNTs and strong c‐MWCNT//PmAP interfacial interactions in the nanocomposites. The electrical conductivity of a nanocomposite constituted of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) dispersed in a semicrystalline polyurethane matrix, is investigated during cooling from the melt to the solid state. The same percolation threshold, ?c = 0.85 wt.%, is obtained in the molten and in the solid state, although the exponent t of the percolation equation is significantly higher in the solid state. A remarkable increase of the conductivity during crystallization is observed for nanocomposites of MWCNT content above ?c, but for contents below ?c the conductivity decreases. Combined conductivity and PVT results, lead us to discard the hypothesis of an increase of the density of the conductive network (associated with volume shrinkage) as being the cause of the conductivity enhancement during crystallization. Instead, the analysis of the parameters of the percolation equation for the molten and the solid state, suggests a transition from a less effective conductive network to a more performing three dimensional network.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared by three different methods: in-situ polymerization technique (I-S), direct mixing in the melt (DM) and dilution of a 0.5 wt.% masterbatch, synthesized via in-situ polymerization, using melt mixing (MB). The morphology of the resulting nanocomposites was examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy and their electrical properties were characterized by ac conductivity measurements. The I-S series of samples exhibited an extremely low electrical percolation threshold (pc ≈ 0.06 wt.%), as compared to values of similar systems previously mentioned in literature. The MB series showed a comparable pc value (pc: 0.05-0.10 wt.%), whereas the investigation revealed a higher pc in the DM series (pc: 0.10-0.20 wt.%). Finally, selected concentrations of samples were prepared using OH-functionalized MWCNT, following the I-S procedure. The conductivity of these samples was found to be lower than that of samples with non-functionalized MWCNT.  相似文献

Fast and efficient determination of the optimal mechanical property of a polymer/CNT nanocomposite is crucial to develop polymer conductive nanocomposites. This work establishes a rheological approach to evaluate the super-toughness point of compatibilized high density polyethylene (HDPE)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites. Results illustrate that three types of HDPE/MWCNT nanocomposites exhibit obvious gel plateaus in the dynamic rheological curves and the gel points of nanocomposites with compatibilizer shift to the low MWCNTs loading. The super-toughness points of HDPE/MWCNT nanocomposites with compatibilizers show the correspondence with the gel points acquired from the rheological data, indicating that dynamic rheology is an effective way to determine the super-toughness points of HDPE/MWCNT nanocomposites with compatibilizers. Furthermore, unique network structure at the gel points is directly observed and the new mechanism of toughness is proposed. This study provides new insights for effective control of the structures and properties of polymer/CNT nanocomposites.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity of polymer/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composites in a powder and in a hot-pressed compacted state, prepared by mechanical mixing, was studied. The semicrystalline ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was used as a polymer matrix. The data clearly evidence the presence of a percolation threshold φc at a very small volume fraction of the MWCNTs φ in a polymer matrix, φc ≈ 0.0004-0.0007. The ultralow percolation threshold in UHMWPE/MWCNTs thermoplastic composites was explained by high aspect ratio of the nanotubes and their segregated distribution inside the polymer matrix. The method of composite preparation effects the values of percolation threshold concentration φc and critical exponent t. A noticeable positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTC effect) was observed in the region of temperatures higher than melting point. It was explained by influence of thermal expansion of the polymer matrix and independence from the melting process that is a result of specific structure of conductive phase.  相似文献

Polystyrene/graphene nanoplatelets (PS/GNP) and polystyrene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PS/MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared through solution mixing processing. The effect of carbon filler (CF) (GNP or MWCNT) doping on the DC/AC electrical conductivity, dielectric characteristics and optical parameters (absorption coefficient, α and band gap energy, Eg) of nanocomposites were investigated and compared for similar doping concentrations. The observed behavior of the DC surface conductivity for PS/CF nanocomposites was explained according to the classical percolation theory, where the percolation thresholds (ϕc) for PS/GNP and PS/MWCNT nanocomposites were determined as 12.0 vol% and 3.81 vol% and the critical exponents (t) were calculated as 2.19 and 2.13, respectively. These results indicate that CFs create three dimensional CF network in PS matrix. The dielectric relaxation properties and the AC conductivity studied by means of Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) measurements, showed that the presence of carbon fillers significantly enhanced the capacitive/charge storage capabilities of the nanocomposites. The optical band gap energies (Eg) of PS/GNP and PS/MWCNT nanocomposites were obtained by using Tauc method. From applicative point of view, with their enhanced dielectric and AC conductivity properties of the PS/GNP and PS/MWCNT nanocomposites have the potential to be used in energy storage and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications.  相似文献

Linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) was melt‐mixed with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and varying amounts of three different kinds of talc (phyllo silicate), each with a different particle size distribution, to examine the effect of these filler combinations with regards to the electrical percolation behavior. The state of the filler dispersion was assessed using transmission light microscopy and electron microscopy. The use of talc as a second filler during the melt mixing of LLDPE/MWCNT composites resulted in an improvement in the dispersion of the MWCNTs and a decrease of the electrical percolation threshold. Talc with lower particle sizes showed a more pronounced effect than talc with larger particle sizes. However, the improvement in dispersion was not reflected in the mechanical properties. Modulus and stress values increase with both, MWCNT and talc addition, but not in a synergistic manner. The crystallization behavior of the composites was studied by differential scanning calorimetry to determine its potential influence on the electrical percolation threshold. It was found that the crystallinity of the matrix increased slightly with the addition of talc but no further increments were observed with the incorporation of the MWCNTs. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A study on the correlation between electrical percolation and viscoelastic percolation for carbon black (CB) and carbon fiber (CF) filled high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) conductive composites was carried out through an examination of the filler concentration (?) dependence of the volume resistivity (ρ) and dynamic viscoelastic functions. For CB/HDPE composites, when ? was higher than the modulus percolation threshold (?G ~ 15 vol %), the dynamic storage modulus (G′) reached a plateau at low frequencies. The relationship between ρ and the normalized dynamic storage modulus (Gc/Gp, where Gc and Gp are the dynamic storage moduli of the composites and the polymer matrix, respectively) was studied. When ? approached a critical value (?r), a characteristic change in Gc/Gp appeared. The critical value (Gc/Gp)c was 9.80, and the corresponding ?r value was 10 vol %. There also existed a ? dependence of the dynamic loss tangent (tan δ) and a peak in a plot of tan δ versus the frequency when ? approached a loss‐angle percolation (?δ = 9 vol %). With parameter K substituted for A, a modified Kerner–Nielson equation was obtained and used to analyze the formation of the network structure. The viscoelastic percolation for CB/HDPE composites could be verified on the basis of the modified equation, whereas no similar percolation was found for CF/HDPE composites. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multi‐walled carbon (MWCNT) and tungsten disulfide (INT‐WS2) nanotubes are materials with excellent mechanical properties, high electrical and thermal conductivity. These special properties make them excellent candidates for high strength and electrically conductive polymer nanocomposite applications. In this work, the possibility of the improvement of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) by the introduction of MWCNT and INT‐WS2 nanotubes was investigated. The PTT nanocomposites with low loading of nanotubes were prepared by in situ polymerization method. Analysis of the nanocomposites' morphology carried out by SEM and TEM has confirmed that well‐dispersed nanotubes in the PTT matrix were obtained at low loading (<0.5 wt%). Thermal and thermo‐oxidative stability of nanocomposites was not affected by the presence of nanotubes in PTT matrix. Loading with INT‐WS2 up to 0.5 wt% was insufficient to ensure electrical conductivity of PTT nanocomposite films. In the case of nanocomposites filled with MWCNT, it was found that nanotube incorporation leads to increase of electrical conductivity of PTT films by 10 orders of magnitude, approaching a value of 10?3 S/cm at loading of 0.3 wt%. Tensile properties of amorphous and semicrystalline (annealed samples) nanocomposites were affected by the presence of nanotubes. Moreover, the increase in the brittleness of semicrystalline nanocomposites with the increase in MWCNT loading was observed, while the nanocomposites filled with INT‐WS2 were less brittle than neat PTT. The conductivity of a stoichiometric mixture of diglycidyl ether of 1,4‐butanediol and 1,6‐hexamethylene diamine has been studied during its polymerization at several temperatures where the ultimate product is a crosslinked gel. The decrease in the dc conductivity, σ0, with the polymerization time, t, fits an equation for bond percolation, σ0 ∼ [(tgelt)/tgel]p, and yields a gelation time, tgel which agrees with the tgel determined from the viscosity and shear modulus measurements. It is proposed that as one covalent bond forms on chemical reaction, an indeterminable number of intermolecular H‐bonds in the structure vanish, and protonic conduction is disrupted. Thus, as the original H‐bond network gives way to a covalently bonded network, the mechanical rigidity increases, and protonic conductivity decreases. The gel point is reached when the increase in the number of covalent bonds brings the liquid's state up to its rigidity percolation threshold, and the decrease in the number of H‐bonds brings it down to its electrical percolation threshold. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The dielectric investigations of porous synthetic silica gel modified with polyaniline (PANI) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) polyblend at various concentrations are demonstrated in this paper. By using the chemical oxidative process to embed polyaniline (PANI) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) into a silica matrix, conducting gel nanocomposites were synthesized. For various dopant concentrations, the dielectric permittivity (ε′), D.C. conductivity (σdc), loss tangent (tanδ) and dielectric loss (ε″) were investigated. The samples were characterized using differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Depending on the co-blend content, PANI-PEG modified silica structures produce nanoparticles ranging in size from 9.9 to 48.1 nm. The variation of DC conductivity (σdc) with PANI/PEG content shows Maxwell-Wagner Sillars (MWS) effect confirming the role of the conjugation and the structural order.  相似文献

The effects of three types of electrically-inert fillers, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), talc and glass fiber (GF), on electrical resistivity, crystallization behavior and dynamic mechanical properties of poly(m-xylene adipamide) (MXD6)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are investigated. The electrical resistivity of MXD6/MWCNT composites is significantly reduced with the addition of inert fillers due to the volume-exclusion effect that leads to increased effective concentration of MWCNTs in MXD6 matrix and also due to improved MWCNT dispersion. The crystallization temperature of MXD6 increases with the addition of MWCNTs, indicating that MWCNTs can act as nucleating agent and induce crystallization of MXD6. The incorporation of inert fillers has no further effect on crystallization behavior of MXD6, but significantly improves the storage modulus of MXD6/MWCNT composite, demonstrating that CaCO3, talc and GF filled MXD6/MWCNT composites are very promising materials with not only improved electrical property but also excellent mechanical properties.  相似文献

Electrical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)/hybrid-glass nanocomposites prepared by the fast-sol–gel reaction were investigated in light of percolation theory. A good correlation was found between the experimental results and the theory. We obtained a percolation threshold ? c  = 0.22 wt%, and a critical exponent of t = 1.73. These values are reported for the first time for a silica-based system. The highest conductivity measured on the MWNT/hybrid-glass nanocomposites was σ ≈ 10?3(Ω cm)?1 for 2 wt% carbon nanotube (CNT) loading. The electrical conductivity was at least 12 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure silica. Electrostatic force microscopy and conductive-mode atomic force microscopy studies demonstrated conductivity at the micro-level, which was attributed to the CNT dispersed in the matrix. It appears that the dispersion in our MWNT/hybrid-glass system yields a particularly low percolation threshold compared with that of a MWNT/silica-glass system. Materials with electrical conductivities described in this work can be exploited for anti-static coating.  相似文献

Developing conductive networks in a polymer matrix with a low percolation threshold and excellent mechanical properties is desired for soft electronics applications. In this work, natural rubber (NR) functionalized with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared for strong interfacial interactions with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), resulting in excellent performance of the natural rubber nanocomposites. The MWCNT and methyl methacrylate functional groups gave good filler dispersion, conductivity and tensile properties. The filler network in the matrix was studied with microscopy and from its non-linear viscoelasticity. The Maier-Göritze approach revealed that MWCNT network formation was favored in the NR functionalized with PMMA, with reduced electrical and mechanical percolation thresholds. The obvious improvement in physical performance of MWCNT/methyl methacrylate functionalized natural rubber nanocomposites was caused by interfacial interactions and reduced filler agglomeration in the NR matrix. The modification of NR with poly(methyl methacrylate) and MWCNT filler was demonstrated as an effective pathway to enhance the mechanical and electrical properties of natural rubber nanocomposites.  相似文献

Several series of nanocomposites were prepared using a latex-based process, the main step of which consisted of mixing an aqueous suspension of exfoliated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and a polymer latex. In the present work, a systematic study on the electrical properties of fully amorphous (polystyrene - PS) as well as semi-crystalline (isotactic polypropylene - iPP) nanocomposites containing either single-wall (SWCNTs) or multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been conducted. Percolation thresholds as low as 0.05 wt.% or 0.1 wt.% were observed for SWCNT/iPP and MWCNT/iPP nanocomposites, respectively. The formation of a conductive percolating network at such a low CNT concentration is favored by the high intrinsic conductivity and the low viscosity of the polymer matrix. The electrical percolation threshold of the iPP-based system was found to be lower than its rheological percolation threshold. Beyond the percolation threshold, MWCNT-based nanocomposites generally exhibited higher conductivity levels than those based on SWCNTs, most probably due to the higher intrinsic conductivity of the MWCNTs as compared to that of the SWCNTs. These excellent electrical properties, associated with the strong nucleating effect of the CNTs reported earlier [1] and [2], render this type of nanocomposites extremely attractive from a technological point of view.  相似文献

Novel water-soluble amphiphilic copolymers (poly[(stearyl methacrylate)-stat-([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium iodide)]) for dispersing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used to carry out in situ methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization. The morphology of the poly(methyl methacrylate)/MWCNT composites and the dispersion of the MWCNTs were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. The dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the composites was excellent for cationic SMA (stearyl methacrylate) copolymers, even at high MWCNT loading (6.0 wt.%). The mechanical properties and electrical and thermal conductivities of the composites were also analyzed. Mechanical properties were improved by MWCNTs; the strain at break values remained stable up to 6.0 wt.% MWCNT loading. Both electrical and thermal conductivities were improved by the addition of MWCNTs.  相似文献

Thermal degradation behavior of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) nanocomposites, with different nanotubes contents (0.5, 1.5 and 3.5 wt%) prepared via in-situ polymerization technique have been investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA spectra revealed that these nanocomposites had enhanced thermal stability and no significant mass loss (<0.4 wt%) occurred up to 350°C. Thermal degradation of these UHMWPE/MWCNT nanocomposites was investigated in terms of parameters such as the onset temperature of degradation (T10), the decomposition temperature at 50% wt loss (T50), the degradation temperature of maximum rate of the weight loss (Tm), and the residual yields (WR) from TGA. The degradation activation energies (E) of virgin UHMWPE and its nanocomposites were estimated using the Friedman, the Ozawa, Flynn, and Wall (OFW), and the Kissinger's methods. Results indicated that the degradation activation energy for the virgin UHMWPE was 281.3 kJ/mol. The activation energy increased with increasing nanotube loading up to 1.5 wt% indicating that MWCNTs had a stabilizing effect on the degradation of the matrix. However, loadings of 3.5 wt% of nanotube or more could slightly decrease the activation energy. The decrease in the activation energy for degradation of nanocomposites with higher MWCNT concentrations might be attributed to the catalytic effects of nanotubes and polymerization catalyst residues. The “model fitting” method indicated a mechanism of n th-order auto-catalysis from the form of the conversion curves for UHMWPE/MWCNTs nanocomposites prepared via in-situ polymerization.  相似文献
