Three amphiphilic rod‐coil diblock copolymers, poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline‐b‐γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (PEOz‐b‐PBLG), incorporating the same‐length PEOz block length and various lengths of their PBLG blocks, were synthesized through a combining of living cationic and N‐carboxyanhydride (NCA) ring‐opening polymerizations. In the bulk, these block copolymers display thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior. The self‐assembled aggregates that formed from these diblock copolymers in aqueous solution exhibited morphologies that differed from those obtained in α‐helicogenic solvents, that is, solvents in which the PBLG blocks adopt rigid α‐helix conformations. In aqueous solution, the block copolymers self‐assembled into spherical micelles and vesicular aggregates because of their amphiphilic structures. In helicogenic solvents (in this case, toluene and benzyl alcohol), the PEOz‐b‐PBLG copolymers exhibited rod‐coil chain properties, which result in a diverse array of aggregate morphologies (spheres, vesicles, ribbons, and tube nanostructures) and thermoreversible gelation behavior. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block copolymers can be conveniently prepared via convergent syntheses, allowing each individual polymer block to be prepared via the polymerization technique that gives the best architectural control. The convergent “click‐chemistry” route presented here, gives access to amphiphilic diblock copolymers prepared from a ring opening metathesis polymer and polyethylene glycol. Because of the high functional group tolerance of ruthenium carbene initiators, highly functional ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) polymer blocks can be prepared. The described synthetic route allows the conjugation of these polymer blocks with other end‐functional polymers to give well‐defined and highly functional amphiphilic diblock copolymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP‐b‐PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self‐assembled nanostructures of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Herein, we present a facile and comprehensive synthetic methodology for the preparation of polyester‐polyamidoamine (PAMAM) (i.e., polyester: polylactide [PLA] (hydrophobic) and polyamidoamine, PAMAM [hydrophilic]) polymers. A library of PLA‐PAMAM linear dendritic block copolymers (LDBCs) in which both l and d , l polylactide were employed in mass ratios of 30:70, 50:50, 70:30, and 90:10 (PLA:PAMAM) were synthesized and analyzed. When placed in aqueous media, the immiscibility of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments leads to nanophase‐segregation exhibited as the formation of aggregates (e.g., vesicles, worms, and/or micelles). By employing both stereochemical configurations of PLA, the differentiation in mass ratios of PLA‐PAMAM aided in elucidating the structure–property relationships of the LDBC system and provided a means toward the control of nanoparticle morphology. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering afford the size and shape of the nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 10.6 for low mass ratios to 122.4 nm for high mass ratios of PLA‐PAMAM and positive zeta‐potential values between +24.7 mV and +48.2 mV. Furthermore, small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) studies were employed to obtain more detailed information on the morphological assemblies constructed via direct dissolution. Such insights provide a pathway toward nanomaterials with unique morphologies and tunable properties deemed relevant in the development of next generation biomaterials. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The temperature‐responsive poly (N, N‐diethylacrylamide) (pDEAAm) with narrower molecular weight distribution was prepared by the atom transfer radical polymerization and characterized by 1HNMR and gel permeation chromatography. The temperature‐responsive “tadpole‐shaped” BSA–pDEAAm hybrids were fabricated via a free Cys‐34 residue of bovine serum albumin (BSA) site specifically binding to the end group disulfide bonds of pDEAAm and characterized by native‐polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (Native‐PAGE) and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Their temperature‐responsive behaviors were measured by ultraviolet‐visible spectra (UV‐Vis). The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the pDEAAm was identified as 28°C, and the LCST of BSA–pDEAAm hybrids was identified as 31°C. The morphologies of BSA–pDEAAm hybrids self‐assembled in the aqueous solutions with two different temperatures at 25 °C and 40°C were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Below the LCST of BSA–pDEAAm hybrids, the separate spherical nanoparticles were observed. In contrast, bundles and clusters were observed above the LCST of BSA–pDEAAm hybrids. The results suggested that the self‐assembly morphology of BSA–pDEAAm hybrids depended upon the pDEAAm block in BSA–pDEAAm hybrids, and the morphology transitions were effected by the LCST of BSA–pDEAAm hybrids. It would be expected to be used in biomedicine and materials science. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

pH‐ and temperature‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐block?4‐vinylbenzoic acid) (poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA)) diblock copolymer brushes on silicon wafers have been successfully prepared by combining click reaction, single‐electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Azide‐terminated poly(NIPAAm) brushes were obtained by SET‐LRP followed by reaction with sodium azide. A click reaction was utilized to exchange the azide end group of a poly(NIPAAm) brushes to form a surface‐immobilized macro‐RAFT agent, which was successfully chain extended via RAFT polymerization to produce poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes. The addition of sacrificial initiator and/or chain‐transfer agent permitted the formation of well‐defined diblock copolymer brushes and free polymer chains in solution. The free polymer chains were isolated and used to estimate the molecular weights and polydispersity index of chains attached to the surface. Ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the immobilization of initiator on the silicon wafer, poly(NIPAAm) brush formation via SET‐LRP, click reaction, and poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush formation via RAFT polymerization. The poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes demonstrate stimuli‐responsive behavior with respect to pH and temperature. The swollen brush thickness of poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush increases with increasing pH, and decreases with increasing temperature. These results can provide guidance for the design of smart materials based on copolymer brushes. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013, 51, 2677–2685  相似文献

Block copolymers can form a broad range of self‐assembled aggregates. In solution, planar assemblies usually form closed structures such as vesicles; thus, free‐standing sheet formation can be challenging. While most polymer single crystals are planar, their growth usually occurs by uptake of individual chains. Here we report a novel lamella formation mechanism: core‐crystalline spherical micelles link up to form rods in solution, which then associate to yield planar arrays. For the system of poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polycaprolactone in water, co‐assembly with homopolycaprolactone can induce a series of morphological changes that yield either rods or lamellae. The underlying lamella formation mechanism was elucidated by electron microscopy, while light scattering was used to probe the kinetics. The hierarchical growth of lamellae from one‐dimensional rod subunits, which had been formed from spherical assemblies, is novel and controllable in terms of product size and aspect ratio.  相似文献

Block and random copolymers of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) and poly[3‐(2‐(6‐carboxyhexyl)methyl)thiophene] with side‐chain carboxylic functionality ((P3HT‐b‐P3COOH) and (P3HT‐r‐P3COOH) were developed by Grignard Metathesis (GRIM) polymerization. The carboxylic functionality was introduced in the side chain via the oxazoline route. Both the block and random polythiophene copolymers were complexed with pyridine functionalized perylene bisimide to obtain supramolecular block and random polymer complexes. The complex formation in both systems was confirmed by 1H NMR, WXRD and SAXS studies. An expansion of d spacing upon complex formation was observed in both the block and random copolymer, which could be traced by WXRD. Hole and electron mobilities measured for the supramolecular complexes indicated values which were higher by an order of magnitude for the supramolecular block complex (μh ≈ 2.9 × 10−4 cm2/Vs; μe ≈ 3.1 × 10−6 cm2/Vs) as compared to the random (μh ≈ 1.4 × 10−5 cm2/Vs; μe ≈ 4.7 × 10−7 cm2/Vs) copolymer. These results are indicative of the higher degree of disorder prevailing in the films of random copolymer system compared to the block copolymer. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A controlled co‐solvent vapor annealing system was designed and constructed to investigate the effects of solvent vapor activity during the rapid ambient quenching process on the morphology of a cylinder‐forming poly(styrene)‐b‐poly (ethylene oxide) (PS‐PEO) annealed in toluene and water vapor. A phase transformation from cylinders in the bulk to close‐packed spheres in swollen thin films occurred, which was reversed upon quenching with dry nitrogen. Quenching with humidified nitrogen preserved the spherical morphology but could significantly alter domain spacing and reduce long‐range order in the dried films under some circumstances. Specifically, long‐range order in the quenched films was found to decrease as the quenching humidity decreased from the humidity used during annealing, and the best long‐range order was obtained when the humidity remained consistent throughout both annealing and quenching. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes a DNA‐like polymer that exhibits the ability to self‐assemble through hydrogen bonding. We synthesized poly[1‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)thymine] (PVBT) and 9‐hexadecyladenine (A‐C16) through an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and alkylation, respectively. Biocomplementary PVBT/A‐C16 hierarchical supramolecular complexes formed in dilute DMSO solution through nucleobase recognition, that is, hydrogen bonding interactions between the thymine (T) groups of PVBT and the adenine (A) group of A‐C16; evidence for this molecular recognition was also gained from dynamic light scattering studies. 1H NMR titration studies in CDCl3 showed that T–A complexes formed rapidly on the NMR time scale with high association constants (up to 534 M?1). Moreover, FTIR spectroscopic, differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering analyses provided further details into the nature of the self‐assembly of these systems. In the bulk state, these complexes self‐assemble into well‐ordered lamellar structures; the changing d‐spacing distance (ranging from 4.98 to 2.32 nm) at different A‐C16 loadings reveals that the molecular structures of the PVBT/A‐C16 complexes are readily tailored. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conjugated block copolymers consisting of poly(3‐hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) and a thermoresponsive polymer poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) with varying composition have been synthesized by facile click reaction between alkyne terminated P3HT and azide terminated PNIPAM. The composition‐dependent solubility, thermoresponsive property in water, phase behavior, electrochemical, optical, and electronic properties of the block copolymers were systematically investigated. The block copolymers with higher volume fraction of PNIPAM form thermoresponsive spherical micelles with P3HT‐rich crystalline cores and PNIPAM coronas. Both X‐ray and atomic force microscopic studies indicated that the blocks copolymers showed well‐defined microphase separated nanostructures and the structure depended on the composition of the blocks. The electrochemical study of the block copolymers clearly demonstrated that the extent of charge transport through the block copolymer thin film was similar to P3HT homopolymer without any significant change in the band gap. The block copolymers showed improved or similar charge carrier mobility compared with the pure P3HT depending on the composition of the block copolymer. These P3HT‐b‐PNIPAM copolymers were interesting for fabrication of optoelectronic devices capable of thermal and moisture sensing as well as for studying the thermoresponsive colloidal structures of semiconductor amphiphilic systems. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fabrication of block copolymer (BCP) vesicles (polymersomes) exhibiting synchronized covalent crosslinking and bilayer permeabilization remains a considerable challenge as crosslinking typically leads to compromised membrane permeability. Herein it is demonstrated how to solve this dilemma by employing a stimuli‐triggered crosslinking strategy with amphiphilic BCPs containing photolabile carbamate‐caged primary amines. Upon self‐assembling into polymersomes, light‐triggered self‐immolative decaging reactions release primary amine moieties and extensive amidation reactions then occur due to suppressed amine pKa within hydrophobic milieu. This leads to serendipitous vesicle crosslinking and the process is associated with bilayer hydrophobicity‐to‐hydrophilicity transition and membrane permeabilization.  相似文献

Solution self‐assembly of amphiphilic “rod‐coil” copolymers, especially linear block copolymers and graft copolymers (also referred to as polymer brushes), has attracted considerable interest, as replacing one of the blocks of a coil‐coil copolymer with a rigid segment results in distinct self‐assembly features compared with those of the coil‐coil copolymer. The unique interplay between microphase separation of the rod and coil blocks with great geometric disparities can lead to the formation of unusual morphologies that are distinctly different from those known for coil‐coil copolymers. This review presents the recent achievements in the controlled self‐assembly of rod‐coil linear block copolymers and graft copolymers in solution, focusing on copolymer systems containing conjugated polymers, liquid crystalline polymers, polypeptides, and polyisocyanates as the rod segments. The discussions concentrate on the principle of controlling over the morphology of rod‐coil copolymer assemblies, as well as their distinctive optical and optoelectronic properties or biocompatibility and stimuli‐responsiveness, which afford the assemblies great potential as functional materials particularly for optical, optoelectronic and biological applications. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report here a reversible self‐assembly formation system using block copolymers with thermo‐tunable properties. A series of double‐responsive block copolymers, poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm))‐block‐poly(NIPAAm‐coN‐(isobutoxymethyl)acrylamide (BMAAm)) with two lower critical solution temperatures were synthesized by one‐pot atom transfer radical polymerization via sequential monomer addition. When dissolved in aqueous solution at room temperature, the block copolymers remained unimeric. Upon heating above room temperature, the block copolymers self‐assembled into micellar structures. The micelle formation temperature and the resulting diameter were controlled by varying the BMAAm content. 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, dynamic light scattering, field‐emission scanning electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectra revealed the presence of a monodisperse nanoassembly, and demonstrated the assembly formation/inversion process was fully reversible. Moreover, a model hydrophobic molecule, pyrene, was successfully loaded into the micelle core by including pyrene in the original polymer solution. Further heating resulted in mesoscopic micelle aggregation and precipitation. This dual micelle and aggregation system will find utility in drug delivery applications as a thermal trigger permits both aqueous loading of hydrophobic drugs and their subsequent release. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The azobenzene‐based amphiphilic copolymers have drawn significant attention as a kind of multi‐responsive smart materials. The demand on deeper investigation of how the azobenzene group influences the micelles formation and light‐responsive behavior on molecular level is very urgent. In this article, multi‐responsive block copolymers, poly (acrylic acid)‐block‐poly[4'‐[[(2‐Methacryloyloxy)ethyl]ethylainino]azobenzene‐co‐poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (PAA‐b‐P (AzoMA‐co‐PEGMA)), with pH‐, light‐ and reduction‐responsiveness were synthesized by the monomers of AzoMA, PEGMA and acrylic acid via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). The amphiphilic block copolymer presented aggregation‐induced emission effect, and it was pH, light, and reduction responsive. The results showed that the micelle size decreased with the decreasing of pH within a certain range. However, the particle size of micelles increased significantly when the pH was 4. Once adding reduction agent, the micelles were disassembly. Fluorescent molecule of Nile red was selected as a hydrophobic guest molecule to study the properties of encapsulating and releasing abilities of block copolymer micelles for guest molecules. The results showed that the loading capacity of three kinds of copolymer micelles was closely related to the aggregates formed by the hydrophobic block, mainly azobenzene block. Besides, the block copolymer micelles could release a certain amount of Nile red under the irradiation of UV light, the reduction with Na2S2O4 as reductant, and the exposure to alkaline environment. The mechanism of how the different status of azobenzene group influenced the self‐assembly and multi‐responsive behavior was explored on molecular level.  相似文献

We have demonstrated the preparation of a series of photoaddressable supramolecular block copolymers by mixing a carboxy‐terminated azobenzene derivative, 6‐[4‐(4′‐cyanophenylazo)phenyloxy]hexanoic acid (AZO), and two polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpiridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) block copolymers. AZO can be selectively attached to the P4VP block of PS‐b‐P4VP through hydrogen bonding interactions. The assembly of AZO with vinylpyridine group‐containing polymers was initially investigated on a model system composed of P4VP homopolymer and AZO. Homogeneous liquid crystalline materials were obtained for ratios of AZO to vinylpyridine repeating unit, x, lower or equal to 0.50. Mixtures with higher x resulted in heterogeneous materials showing clear macrophase separation. Accordingly, a series of hydrogen‐bonded complexes of PS‐b‐P4VP and AZO, PS‐b‐P4VP(AZO)x, with x = 0.25 and x = 0.50 were prepared. Lamellar and spherical morphologies were observed for the complexes based on PS24‐b‐P4VP9.5 (Mn,PS = 24,000, Mn,P4VP = 9500) and PS24‐b‐P4VP1.9 (Mn,PS = 24,000, Mn,P4VP = 1900), respectively. Photoinduced orientation of the azobenzene units was obtained in films of P4VP(AZO)x and PS‐b‐P4VP(AZO)x with x = 0.25 and 0.50 by using 488 nm linearly polarized light and characterized through birefringence and dichroism measurements. This investigation shows a versatile and less laborious approach to azobenzene‐containing polymer materials with low chromophore content, of interest in optical application. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel approach to load a hydrophilic bovine serum albumin into drug carriers was proposed in terms of temperature‐programmed “shell‐in‐shell” structures, which were fabricated with poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), poly(lactide), poly(ethylene glycol), and Au nanoparticles. Spherically well‐defined “shell‐in‐shell” structures were constructed by a modified‐double‐emulsion method (MDEM). The lower critical solubility temperature of the structures was manipulated to 36.4 °C which was confirmed by UV/Vis spectroscopy and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry).

A series of perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB) aryl ether‐based amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and fluorophilic poly(p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate) segments were synthesized via successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 2‐MBP‐initiated and CuBr/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine‐catalyzed ATRP homopolymerization of the PFCB‐containing methacrylate monomer, p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate, can be performed in a controlled mode as confirmed by the fact that the number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increased linearly with the conversions of the monomer while the polydispersity indices kept below 1.38. The block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.36) were synthesized by ATRP using Br‐end‐functionalized poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) as macroinitiator followed by the acidolysis of hydrophobic PtBA block into hydrophilic PAA segment. The critical micelle concentrations of the amphiphilic diblock copolymers in different surroundings were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe. The morphology and size of the micelles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic laser light scattering, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis, 1H and 13C NMR spectra, and X‐ray structures are described for three dialkoxy ethynylnitrobenzenes that differ only in the length of the alkoxy chain, namely 1‐ethynyl‐2‐nitro‐4,5‐dipropoxybenzene, C14H17NO4, 1,2‐dibutoxy‐4‐ethynyl‐5‐nitrobenzene, C16H21NO4, and 1‐ethynyl‐2‐nitro‐4,5‐dipentoxybenzene, C18H25NO4. Despite the subtle changes in molecular structure, the crystal structures of the three compounds display great diversity. Thus, 1‐ethynyl‐2‐nitro‐4,5‐dipropoxybenzene crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system in the space group , with Z = 18, 1,2‐dibutoxy‐4‐ethynyl‐5‐nitrobenzene crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system in the space group P 21/c , with Z = 4, and 1‐ethynyl‐2‐nitro‐4,5‐dipentoxybenzene crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system in the space group , with Z = 2. The crystal structure of 1‐ethynyl‐2‐nitro‐4,5‐dipropoxybenzene is dominated by planar hexamers formed by a bifurcated alkoxy sp‐C—H…O,O′ interaction, while the structure of the dibutoxy analogue is dominated by planar ribbons of molecules linked by a similar bifurcated alkoxy sp‐C—H…O,O′ interaction. In contrast, the dipentoxy analogue forms ribbons of molecules alternately connected by a self‐complementary sp‐C—H…O2N interaction and a self‐complementary sp2‐C—H…O2N interaction. Disordered solvent was included in the crystals of 1‐ethynyl‐2‐nitro‐4,5‐dipropoxybenzene and its contribution was removed during refinement.  相似文献
