The velocity field of a circular water jet impinging onto a flat plate has been measured using particle image velocimetry, or PIV. The velocity field has been recorded at several instants in time, producing thousands of simultaneous two-dimensional velocity measurements for each realization. The instantaneous velocity, vorticity and rate-of-strain fields reveal the interaction of vortices near the impinging wall within the radial wall jet downstream from the stagnation point. An ensemble average of the instantaneous fields produces a mean velocity field of the jet flow, which reveals many of the processes leading to boundary layer separation and vortex breakaway within the wall jet. The PIV system extracts the velocity measurements using a two-dimensional autocorrelation method, and can obtain thousands of highly accurate velocity measurements within a few minutes. The structure found in these experiments may be similar to the ground level structure of atmospheric microburst phenomena.A version of this paper was presented at the 11th Symposium on Turbulence, University of Missouri-Rolla, 17–19 October 1988  相似文献

The flow field associated with a jet impinging onto a surface at an inclined angle is investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The results indicate that as a free jet impinges on a flat surface at an inclined angle the jet is turned by and spread laterally onto the impingement surface. The impingement angle of the jet is the dominant parameter in determining the rate of turning/spreading for the jet. The stagnation point is located using the PIV data and is found upstream of the geometric impingement point and upstream of the location of maximum pressure. The location of the stagnation point is a strong function of impingement angle and a weak function of impingement distance and pressure ratio. The location of the stagnation point is compared with the location of maximum pressure and compared to a curve fit for the location of maximum pressure based an exact solution of the Navier–Stokes equations for a non-orthogonal stagnation flow.  相似文献

The technical basis and system set-up of a dual-plane stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) system, which can obtain the flow velocity (all three components) fields at two spatially separated planes simultaneously, is summarized. The simultaneous measurements were achieved by using two sets of double-pulsed Nd:Yag lasers with additional optics to illuminate the objective fluid flow with two orthogonally linearly polarized laser sheets at two spatially separated planes, as proposed by Kaehler and Kompenhans in 1999. The light scattered by the tracer particles illuminated by laser sheets with orthogonal linear polarization were separated by using polarizing beam-splitter cubes, then recorded by high-resolution CCD cameras. A three-dimensional in-situ calibration procedure was used to determine the relationships between the 2-D image planes and three-dimensional object fields for both position mapping and velocity three-component reconstruction. Unlike conventional two-component PIV systems or single-plane stereoscopic PIV systems, which can only get one-component of vorticity vectors, the present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system can provide all the three components of the vorticity vectors and various auto-correlation and cross-correlation coefficients of flow variables instantaneously and simultaneously. The present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system was applied to measure an air jet mixing flow exhausted from a lobed nozzle. Various vortex structures in the lobed jet mixing flow were revealed quantitatively and instantaneously. In order to evaluate the measurement accuracy of the present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system, the measurement results were compared with the simultaneous measurement results of a laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) system. It was found that both the instantaneous data and ensemble-averaged values of the stereoscopic PIV measurement results and the LDV measurement results agree well. For the ensemble-averaged values of the out-of-plane velocity component at comparison points, the differences between the stereoscopic PIV and LDV measurement results were found to be less than 2%. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure instantaneous and average particle velocity fields near the stagnation zone of a particle-laden impinging air jet. The results were compared with Lagrangian particle tracking measurements. Ensemble averages from the two methods agree well except in regions where particles have different histories, and a specific trajectory is dominant but not exclusive. The PIV autocorrelation method loses information regarding non-dominant particle trajectories. Thus, although instantaneous PIV measurements yield the dominant particle velocities correctly, the averaged measurements are biased in some regions. This work was supported by the Electric Power Research Institute under Contract RP 8034-01. A method to extract whole-field spatio-temporal correlations by combining global and single-point measurement techniques of different time resolutions is proposed. For fluid mechanics applications, the emphasis is on the combination of low repetition rate particle image velocimetry (PIV) results with experimental data obtained at largely higher sampling frequencies. The experimental feasibility of the procedure is established from results obtained in the wake of a cylinder, using PIV and constant temperature hot wire anemometry (CTA). The method is then applied to examine the shear layer in the core of a round subsonic jet using PIV and laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV). The accuracy of the cross-correlation functions is compared to the auto- and cross-correlation functions obtained from series of LDV and CTA measurements.  相似文献

The point reference global correlation (PRGC) technique which combines single and global measurements as proposed by Chatellier and Fitzpatrick (Exp Fluids 38(5):563–757, 2005) is of significant interest for the analysis of the turbulent statistics for noise source modeling in jet flows as it allows the 2D spatio-temporal correlation functions to be obtained over a region of the flow. This enables the statistical characteristics including inhomogeneous and anisotropic features to be determined. The sensitivity of the technique is examined in some detail for the specific case of laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Simulated data are used to enable a parametric study of the accuracy of the PRGC technique to be determined as a function of the various measurement parameters. The sample frequencies and the number of samples of both the LDV and PIV signals are shown to be critical to errors associated with the estimated spatio-temporal correlations and that low data rates can lead to significant errors in the estimates. Measurements performed in single stream and co-axial jet flows at Mach 0.24 using PIV and LDV systems are reported and the 2D space–time correlation functions for these flows are determined using the PRGC technique. The results are discussed in the context of noise source modeling for jet flows.  相似文献

Because of the inherent small size of optical fiberscopes, they provide access and relative handling ease in given closed vessels, which are hardly equipped with extra windows for conventional flow visualization. The use of an optical fiberscope in conjunction with a conventional particle image velocimetry/particle tracking velocimetry (PIV/PTV) system without optimization can lead to degraded transmission of images. The present study proposes a processing technique to filter background noise contained within the coarse bundle image by subtracting the original image of the bundle as reference image. Additionally, efforts were made to increase the reliability of vector processing using particle streak images via judicious pulse interval and duration adjustments. As an applications test we measured classic jet flow using the developed system and using established conventional measurement techniques. Our tests confirmed that our fiberscope PTV system provides vector fields with sufficient accuracy.  相似文献

Radially confined, axisymmetric impinging jet flows are investigated by using the standard particle image velocimetry experimental technique. The confinement is achieved by placing a confinement block around a jet, co-axially. The inner diameter of the block is successively varied to nine different values. The inlet-based Reynolds number of the jet is kept constant at 5000. The nine diametric values yielded nine different flows of widely different characteristics. Among other usage, an insight into the flow characteristics can be helpful in designing compact impinging jet applications, as such a radially confined flow is equivalent to passing the pre-impingement jet through a hole perforated in a solid wall (i.e. the jet source can be placed behind a wall). The study has revealed that the flows, in general, form two circulation zones, three mixing layers, and two boundary layers. Based on turbulence characteristics of the five shear layers, overall characteristics of the flows are understood systematically. Mean velocity and various turbulence statistics are also presented, and mechanisms underlying behind their variations are explained. Finally, scaling laws are obtained for the mean velocity and for the turbulence statistics, both in the impingement and in the wall jet regions.  相似文献

The wall shear stress and the vortex dynamics in a circular impinging jet are investigated experimentally for Re = 1,260 and 2,450. The wall shear stress is obtained at different radial locations from the stagnation point using the polarographic method. The velocity field is given from the time resolved particle image velocimetry (TR‐PIV) technique in both the free jet region and near the wall in the impinging region. The distribution of the momentum thickness is also inspected from the jet exit toward the impinged wall. It is found that the wall shear stress is correlated with the large-scale vortex passing. Both the primary vortices and the secondary structures strongly affect the variation of the wall shear stress. The maximum mean wall shear stress is obtained just upstream from the secondary vortex generation where the primary structures impinge the wall. Spectral analysis and cross-correlations between the wall shear stress fluctuations show that the vortex passing influences the wall shear stress at different locations simultaneously. Analysis of cross-correlations between temporal fluctuations of the wall shear stress and the transverse vorticity brings out the role of different vortical structures on the wall shear stress distribution for the two Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

A single subcooled jet of water which undergoes boiling upon impingement on a discrete heat source is studied experimentally using time-resolved stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV). The impinging jet issues from a 3.75 mm diameter sharp-edged orifice in a confining orifice plate positioned 4 orifice diameters from the target surface. The behavior at jet Reynolds numbers of 5,000 and 15,000 is compared for a constant jet inlet subcooling of 10 °C. Fluorescent illumination allows for simultaneous imaging of both the flow tracers and the vapor bubbles in the flow. Flow structure, time-averaged velocities, and turbulence statistics are reported for the liquid regions within the confinement gap for a range of heat inputs at both Reynolds numbers, and the effect of the vapor generation on the flow is discussed. Vapor generation from boiling is found to modify the liquid velocities and turbulence fluctuations in the confinement gap. Flow in the confinement gap is dominated by vapor flow, and the vapor bubbles disrupt both the vertical impinging jet and horizontal wall jet flow. Moreover, vapor bubbles are a significant source of turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation, with the bubbly regions above the heated surface experiencing the most intense turbulence modification. Spectral analysis indicates that a Strouhal number of 0.023 is characteristic of the interaction between bubbles and turbulent liquid jets.  相似文献

Turbulent opposed jet (TOJ) burners are an interesting test case for fundamental combustion research and a good benchmark for the available modelling approaches. However, these opposed jet flames strongly depend on the turbulence generation inside the nozzle, which is usually achieved through a perforated plate upstream of the nozzle exit. The present work investigates the flow from these perforated plates and the subsequent turbulence generation in great detail. We present results from highly-resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of the in-nozzle flow in turbulent opposed jets alongside state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) at standard and high repetition rates taken inside a glass nozzle. The in-nozzle PIV data provides the LES inflow conditions with unprecedented detail, which are used to follow the initial jet development behaviour known from PIV, before jet coalescence, turbulence production and decay further downstream in the nozzles are successfully predicted. In regions where the PIV experiment suffers from inherent limitations like reflections and the velocity bias, the LES data is available to still obtain a detailed picture of the flow. The sensitivity of the simulations to various physical and numerical parameters is discussed in detail. Results from LES and PIV are compared qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of first and second moments of velocity, temporal autocorrelations, and energy density spectra. Significant deviations are found in the frequency (20%) and strength of vortex shedding from the inlet plane only, whereas the qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulation and experiment is otherwise excellent throughout, implying that a successful large eddy simulation of a turbulent opposed jet can be performed in a domain that includes the perforated plates.  相似文献

The current work experimentally investigates the flow characteristics of an air jet impinging on an open rotor-stator system with a low non-dimensional spacing, G?=?0.02, and with a very low aspect ratio, e/D?=?0.25. The rotational Reynolds numbers varied from $0.33\times10^5$ to $5.32\times10^5$ , while the jet Reynolds numbers ranged from 17.2?×?103 to 43?×?103. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were taken along the entire disk diameter in three axial planes. From the obtained PIV velocity fields, the flow statistics were computed. A recirculation flow region, which was centered at the impingement point and possessed high turbulence intensities, was observed. Local peaks in root-mean-square fluctuating velocity distributions appeared in the recirculation region and near the periphery, respectively. Proper orthogonal decomposition analysis was applied to the cases of the jet impinging on the rotor with and without rotation to reveal the coherent structures in the jet region.  相似文献

Self-sustained jet flapping is observed in a confined, premixed and preheated methane-air turbulent flame, generated in a single-nozzle jet-stabilized gas turbine model combustor designed based on the FLOX ? concept. The flapping frequency and its complex motion within the confinement of the combustor are characterized in detail using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the flow fields measured by particle imaging velocimetry (PIV). The influence of jet flapping on combustion stability is examined using simultaneous PIV/OH chemiluminescence imaging and PIV/planar laser-induced fluorescence of OH radicals (OH PLIF) at 5 kHz repetition rate. By influencing the size and location of the recirculation zones, jet flapping modifies the flame shape and flame lift-off height. It also controls the amount of hot gas entrainment into the recirculation zones. In extreme cases, jet flapping is found to cause temporary local extinction of the flame, due to jet impingement on the combustor wall and partial blockage of burned gas entrainment. The flame is only able to recover after the jet detaches from the wall and reopens the back flow channel. The results suggest that jet flapping could play a key role in the stabilization mechanisms in similar jet-stabilized combustors.  相似文献

In order to validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations, accurate velocity measurements were performed in a so called pre-swirl system. The objective was to determine the three-dimensional velocity field in the enclosed rotor–stator gap by using an adapted stereo particle image velocimetry (stereo PIV) setup. Particular attention was invested in the design of the optical access, thus, offering interesting possibilities to investigate various geometrical configurations of the pre-swirl system. The measurements impressively showed the spreading of the jet inside the wheelspace and the unsteady aspect of the flow, confirming that stereo PIV can successfully be applied in an enclosed rotor–stator system.  相似文献

An experimental study of particle velocities in micro-abrasive jets by using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique is presented. It has been found that the particle jet flow has a nearly linear expansion downstream. The particle velocities increase with air pressure, and the increasing rate increases with nozzle diameter within the range considered. The instantaneous velocity profile of the particle flow field in terms of the particle velocity distribution along the axial and radial directions of the jets is discussed. For the axial profile in the jet centerline downstream, there exists an extended acceleration stage, a transition stage, and a deceleration stage. For the radial velocity profiles, a relatively flat shape is observed at a jet cross-section near the nozzle exit. Mathematical models for the particle velocities in the air jet are then developed. It is shown that the results from the models agree well with experimental data in both the variation trend and magnitude.  相似文献

The development and structure of steady-state acoustic flows in the focal region of a spherical ultrasonic concentrator is first studied using the particle image velocimetry (PIV ) method in order to improve the technology of rapid growth of salt single crystals. By comparing the results of rheological and acoustic measurements, it is shown that the PIV method can be effectively used for rapid diagnostics of a spatially inhomogeneous acoustic field.  相似文献

A new stereoscopic approach based on telecentric lenses is introduced. The method offers in-focus imaging at high viewing angles (highly tilted object planes) with diminishing systematic image distortion. In single-view particle image velocimetry (PIV) applications telecentric lenses can be used to eliminate projection errors. Normal and oblique viewing are tested using a commercial telecentric lens with particle image velocimetry.  相似文献
