Heat transfer distribution in rectangular ducts with V-shaped ribs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Heat transfer distributions are presented for a rectangular duct with two opposite wide walls arranged with V-shaped ribs pointing upstream or downstream relative to the main flow direction. The rectangular duct has an aspect ratio of 1/8. The parallel V-shaped circular ribs are arranged staggered on the two wide walls. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio is 0.06, with an attack angle of 60°. The pitch-to-height ratio equals 10. The tested Reynolds numbers range from 1000 to 6000. The test surface is sprayed with black paint and then liquid crystal, and a steady state method is adopted to obtain the temperature distribution between adjacent ribs. The secondary flow caused by the angled ribs creates different spanwise variation of the heat transfer coefficient on the rib-roughened wall for different V-rib orientations. Interaction between heat transfer and secondary flow is analyzed. In the streamwise direction, the temperature distribution shows a sawtooth behavior between a pair of adjacent ribs. Local Nusselt numbers are presented between a pair of adjacent ribs, and based on these the average Nusselt numbers are calculated to investigate the augmentation of heat transfer by the presence of the V-shaped ribs. This paper reports an experimental investigation of open channel turbulent flow over hemispherical ribs. A row of ribs consists of hemispheres closely placed to one another in the spanwise direction and cover the entire span of the channel. The pitch-to-height ratio is varied to achieve the so-called d-type, intermediate and k-type roughness. The Reynolds numbers based on water depth, h, and momentum thickness, θ, of the approach flow are respectively, Reh = 28,100 and Reθ = 1800. A particle image velocimetry is used to obtain detailed velocity measurements in and above the cavity. Streamlines, mean velocity and time-averaged turbulent statistics are used to study the effects of pitch-to-height ratio on the flow characteristics and also to document similarities and differences between the present work and prior studies over two-dimensional transverse rods. It was observed that interaction between the outer flow and the shear layers generated by ribs is strongest for k-type and least for d-type ribs. The results also show that hemispherical ribs are less effective in augmenting flow resistance compared to two-dimensional transverse ribs. The levels of the Reynolds stresses and budget terms increase with increasing pitch-to-height ratio inside the roughness sublayer.  相似文献

The evolution of a time-developing mixing layer with cross-shear is simulated numerically using a pseudo-spectral method. The results indicate that stretching by the rollers is responsible for the formation of the streamwise vortices in a mixing layer with cross-shear. When the cross-shear is relatively strong (such as θ=20°), the co-rotating streamwise vortices related to the early spanwise Kelvin–Helmholtz instability are intensified rapidly by stretching and collapse into rib-shaped vortices, which are very similar to the ribs in a plane mixing layer. Atθ =20°, the vortex corresponding to the “quadrupole” in a plane mixing layer is also observed in the core region, and a set of streamwise vortices with signs opposite to those of the vortices containing the ribs lie at the spanwise braid region. The counterparts of the ribs, however, are of flat shape and much weaker. When θ is up to 30°, the ribs are so strong that their counterparts cannot develop. When θ is down to 10°, the symmetry of the streamwise vortices is more obvious, but the ribs do not form. Additionally, it is revealed that the introduction of the strong cross-shear results in enhanced mixing compared to a two-dimensional mixing layer.  相似文献

Numerical analyses have been conducted concerning the heat transfer of four small square ribs mounted along one wall of flat parallel adiabatic walls, for the purpose of obtaining the fundamental informations for cooling technique of recent IC package under conditions of constant heat flux and of low Reynolds number range based on the rib height (Re=35–210) and the laminar flow field. The local and average Nusselt numbers around ribs have been obtained and discussed for the following two conditions: (1) all four ribs are heated, (2) only an objective rib of the four ribs is heated. Relations between these conditions are also considered with the streamwise gap between ribs.

In the present study, the regionally-averaged heat transfer coefficients and flow temperature distributions were measured in an equilateral triangular channel with three different rib arrangements (α = 45, 90 and 135°). To measure regionally-averaged heat transfer coefficients in the channel, two rows of copper blocks and a single heater were installed on two ribbed walls. The fluid temperature distributions were obtained using a thermocouple-array. The rotation number ranged from 0.0 to 0.1 with a fixed Reynolds number of 10,000. For the 90° ribs, the heat transfer coefficients on the pressure side surface were increased significantly with rotation, while the suction side surface had lower heat transfer coefficients than the stationary channel. For the angled ribs, rib-induced secondary flow dominated the heat transfer characteristics and high heat transfer rates were observed on the regions near the inner wall for the 45° angled ribs and near the leading edge for the 135° angled ribs.  相似文献

The relationship between the flow resistance of a turbulent flow over triangular ribs regularly distributed on a wall surface and the velocity distribution around the ribs was investigated experimentally. A concentric cylinder device composed of an inner test cylinder and an outer cylinder was employed to measure the flow resistance using the torque of the shaft of the inner cylinder and the velocity distribution of the flow around a rib by laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) simultaneously. We prepared four inner test cylinders having 4, 8, 12 and 16 triangular ribs on the surface with the same interval between them. Each rib had an isosceles right triangle V-shape and a height of 2 mm. To investigate the relationship between flow resistance and velocity distribution, we estimated the frictional drag and pressure drag acting on the surface of the ribs separately using the velocity distribution. Therefore, we could also estimate the total flow resistance using the velocity distribution. As a result of the experiment, the flow resistance and the attachment point downstream of the rib were shown to depend on the distance between ribs. Moreover, the flow resistance estimated using the velocity distribution had good agreement with the flow resistance measured using the torque of the inner cylinder.  相似文献

In the present study, experimental studies are carried out to investigate the heat transfer and friction characteristics in a square duct roughened by various-shaped ribs on one wall. The ribs are oriented transversely to the main stream in a periodic arrangement. Liquid crystal thermography is employed to measure the local and average heat transfer coefficient on the ribbed surface. The rib height-to-duct hydraulic diameter ratio is fixed at 0.1; the rib pitch-to-height ratio varies from 8 to 15 and the test Reynolds number spans from 8,000 to 20,000. The results show that the trapezoidal-shaped ribs with decreasing height in the flow direction (case C) provide the highest heat transfer enhancement factor and are likely to be used to suppress the local hot spot which usually occurs in the region just behind the ribs.  相似文献

In the present study, the thermal and hydraulic performance of three rib-roughened rectangular ducts is investigated. The aspect ratio of the ducts was 1 to 8, and the ribs were arranged staggered on the two wide walls. Three rib configurations were tested: parallel ribs and V-shaped ribs pointing upstream or downstream of the main flow direction. For all cases, the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio was 0.06, with an attack angle of 60° and a pitch-to-height ratio of 10. The Reynolds number range was from 1000 to 6000. Liquid crystal thermography was employed in the heat transfer experiment to demonstrate detailed temperature distribution between a pair of ribs on the ribbed surfaces. The secondary flows caused by the inclined ribs create a significant spanwise variation of the heat transfer coefficients on the rib-roughened wall with high heat transfer coefficient at one end of the rib and low value at the other. In the streamwise direction between two consecutive ribs, the temperature distribution shows a sawtooth fashion because of flow reattachment. Based on the local heat transfer coefficients, the average Nusselt numbers were estimated as weighted mean values. Isothermal pressure drop data were taken and presented as Fanning friction factors. The ducts are compared to each other by considering both heat transfer and friction factor performance.  相似文献

In the present work, an experimental investigation of convective heat transfer and pressure drop was carried out for the turning portion of a U-channel where the outer wall was equipped with ribs. The shape of the ribs was varied. The investigation aims to give guidelines for improving the thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar air heater at the turning portion of a U-channel. Both the U-channel and the ribs were made in acrylic material to allow optical access for measuring the surface temperature by using a high-resolution technique based on narrow band thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC R35C5 W) and a CCD camera placed to face the turning portion of the U-channel. The uncertainties were estimated to 5 and 7 % for the Nusselt number and friction factor, respectively. The pressure drop was approximately the same for all the considered shapes of the ribs while the dimpled rib case gave the highest heat transfer coefficient while the grooved rib presented the highest performance index.  相似文献

This paper describes a detailed numerical investigation of a stationary high-aspect-ratio rib-roughed rectangular cooling channel with longitudinal intersecting ribs near the gas turbine blade trailing edge region. In order to overcome the heat transfer performance degeneration in the highaspect- ratio channel, longitudinal intersecting ribs are arranged on the channel bottom surface. The effect of the number of longitudinal intersecting ribs on the flow and heat transfer is systematically studied in the Reynolds number range Re = 10 000–30 000. The results show that a heat transfer augmentation region exists just downstream the junction between the longitudinal rib and the angled rib due to additional secondary flows. With more longitudinal intersecting ribs, the heat transfer distributions on the channel surfaces are more uniform. Though the pressure loss is also enlarged with an increase in the number of longitudinal intersecting ribs, the overall thermal efficiency increases in the entire range of Reynolds numbers investigated. The configuration with two sets of longitudinal intersecting ribs shows the best overall thermal efficiency.  相似文献

The present work is part of a wider research program which concerns the aero-thermal characterization of cooling channels for the trailing edge of gas turbine blades. The selected passage model is characterized by a trapezoidal cross-section of high aspect-ratio and coolant discharge at the blade tip and along the wedge-shaped trailing edge, where seven elongated pedestals are also installed. In this contribution, a new channel configuration provided with inclined ribs installed inside the radial development region is analyzed, extending the previous results and completing the already available data base, thus providing an overall review of the aero-thermal performance of the considered passage. The velocity field inside the channel was measured by means of 2D and Stereo-PIV techniques in multiple flow planes under static and rotating conditions. The tests were performed under engine similar conditions with respect to both Reynolds (Re = 20,000) and Rotation (Ro = 0, 0.23) numbers. Time averaged flow fields and velocity fluctuation data inside the stationary and rotating channels are analyzed and also critically compared with the data acquired without ribs. In this way the effects on the flow field induced by both rotation and ribs are clearly described. In particular, the ribs modify substantially both the flow field on the channel walls where they are installed and the 3D separation structures that surround the pedestals. If also rotation is taken into account, the relative flow field is characterized by a considerable guiding effect of the ribs coupled with a stronger flow separation on the obstacles that further enhances the heat transfer performances. This behavior was confirmed exploiting the wide thermal data base already available, obtaining a direct link between the observed flow features and the heat transfer performances.  相似文献

Experimental investigation had been conducted to study the steady-state forced convection heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the hydrodynamic fully-developed turbulent flow in the air-cooled horizontal equilateral triangular ducts, which were fabricated with the same length and hydraulic diameter. Inner surfaces of the ducts were fixed with square ribs with different side lengths of 6.35, 9.525 and 12.7 mm, respectively, and the uniform separation between the centre lines of two adjacent ribs was kept constant at 57.15 mm. Both the triangular ducts and the ribs were fabricated with duralumin. The experiments were performed with the hydraulic diameter based Reynolds number ranged from 3100 to 11300. The entire inner wall of the duct was heated uniformly, while the outer surface was thermally insulated. It was found that the Darcy friction factor of the duct was increasing rather linearly with the rib size, and forced convection could be enhanced by an internally ribbed surface. However, the heat transfer enhancement was not proportional to the rib size but a maximum forced convection heat transfer augmentation was obtained at the smallest rib of 6.35 mm. Non-dimensional expressions for the determination of the steady-state heat transfer coefficient and Darcy friction factor of the equilateral triangular ducts, which were internally fabricated with uniformly spaced square ribs of different sizes, were also developed. The effect of the stiffness of ribs on the minimum natural frequencies and critical stresses of axially compressed open cylindrical shells reinforced with a quasiregular set of longitudinal ribs is analyzed by way of numerical examples. It is shown that the earlier discovered phenomenon of abrupt decrease in the minimum frequencies is independent of rib stiffness for certain modes and a small number of ribs  相似文献

In this research, adiabatic two-phase air-water flow was investigated, and results for smooth and ribbed rectangular ducts are presented here. The test fluids were air and water at approximately atmospheric conditions. Three ribs of different heights were used; the rib width and pitch were held constant. The ribs were positioned in the duct at three different locations to establish three different conditions: on the bottom wall (water side), on the top wall (air side) and on both the top and bottom walls. The flow regimes in the smooth and ribbed ducts, which were recorded with a video camera, were classified as plug, stratified, slug and wavy flow. The location of the ribs in the duct did not alter the shape of the flow regimes, but the regime boundaries were considerably changed (repositioned). The effects of using ribs of different heights on regime boundaries are represented with flow map diagrams and discussed in detail. Compared to the smooth duct, the ribbed duct had different regime boundary positions. Increasing the rib height initiated hydrodynamical instability at lower fluid velocities. These findings are relevant for the operation and design of pipes, boilers and heat exchangers.  相似文献
