A generalized continuum representation of two-dimensional periodic cellular solids is obtained by treating these materials as micropolar continua. Linear elastic micropolar constants are obtained using an energy approach for square, equilateral triangular, mixed triangle and diamond cell topologies. The constants are obtained by equating two different continuous approximations of the strain energy function. Furthermore, the effects of shear deformation of the cell walls on the micropolar elastic constants are also discussed. A continuum micropolar finite element approach is developed for numerical simulations of the cell structures. The solutions from the continuum representation are compared with the “exact” discrete simulations of these cell structures for a model problem of elastic indentation of a rectangular domain by a point force. The utility of the micropolar continuum representation is illustrated by comparing various cell structures with respect to the stress concentration factor at the root of a circular notch.  相似文献

In view of size effects in cellular solids, we critically compare the analytical results of generalized continuum theories with the computational results of discrete models. Representatives are studied from two classes of generalized continuum theories: the strain divergence theory from the class of higher-grade continua and the micropolar theory from the class of higher-order continua. In the former, the divergence of strain is proposed as an additional deformation measure, while in the latter the microrotation gradients act as the source for extra internal energy. We analytically solve a range of basic boundary value problems (simple shear, pure bending and the strain concentration around a hole) and compare the results with discrete, numerical calculations that are based on a Voronoi representation of the cellular microstructure. By comparing both the local deformation fields and the overall elastic response, we critically assess the capabilities of both theories in capturing size effects in cellular solids.  相似文献

This paper describes a new procedure for the homogenization of orthotropic 3D periodic plates. The theory of Caillerie [Caillerie, D., 1984. Thin elastic and periodic plates. Math. Method Appl. Sci., 6, 159–191.] – which leads to a homogeneous Love–Kirchhoff model – is extended in order to take into account the shear effects for thick plates. A homogenized Reissner–Mindlin plate model is proposed. Hence, the determination of the shear constants requires the resolution of an auxiliary 3D boundary value problem on the unit cell that generates the periodic plate. This homogenization procedure is then applied to periodic brickwork panels.A Love–Kirchhoff plate model for linear elastic periodic brickwork has been already proposed by Cecchi and Sab [Cecchi, A., Sab, K., 2002b. Out-of-plane model for heterogeneous periodic materials: the case of masonry. Eur. J. Mech. A-Solids 21, 249–268 ; Cecchi, A., Sab, K., 2006. Corrigendum to A comparison between a 3D discrete model and two homogenised plate models for periodic elastic brickwork [Int. J. Solids Struct., vol. 41/9–10, pp. 2259–2276], Int. J. Solids Struct., vol. 43/2, pp. 390–392.]. The identification of a Reissner–Mindlin homogenized plate model for infinitely rigid blocks connected by elastic interfaces (the mortar thin joints) has been also developed by the authors Cecchi and Sab [Cecchi A., Sab K., 2004. A comparison between a 3D discrete model and two homogenised plate models for periodic elastic brickwork. Int. J. Solids Struct. 41/9–10, 2259–2276.]. In that case, the identification between the 3D block discrete model and the 2D plate model is based on an identification at the order 1 in the rigid body displacement and at the order 0 in the rigid body rotation. In the present paper, the new identification procedure is implemented taking into account the shear effect when the blocks are deformable bodies. It is proved that the proposed procedure is consistent with the one already used by the authors for rigid blocks. Besides, an analytical approximation for the homogenized shear constants is derived. A finite elements model is then used to evaluate the exact shear homogenized constants and to compare them with the approximated one. Excellent agreement is found. Finally, a structural experimentation is carried out in the case of masonry panel under cylindrical bending conditions. Here, the full 3D finite elements heterogeneous model is compared to the corresponding 2D Reissner–Mindlin and Love–Kirchhoff plate models so as to study the discrepancy between these three models as a function of the length-to-thickness ratio (slenderness) of the panel. It is shown that the proposed Reissner–Mindlin model best fits with the finite elements model.

Non-linear Cosserat and Cauchy anisotropic continua equivalent to masonry-like materials, like brick/block masonry, jointed rocks, granular materials or matrix/particle composites, are presented. An integral procedure of equivalence in terms of mechanical power has been adopted to identify the effective elastic moduli of the two continuous models starting from a Lagrangian system of interacting rigid elements. Non-linear constitutive functions for the interactions in the Lagrangian system are defined in order to take into account both the low capability to carry tension and the friction at the interfaces between elements. The non-linear problem is solved through a finite element procedure based on the iterative adjustment of the continuum constitutive tensor due to the occurrence of some limit situation involving the contact actions of the discrete model.Differences between the classical and the micropolar model are investigated with the aid of numerical analyses carried out on masonry walls made of blocks of different size. The capability of the micropolar continuum to discern, unlike the classical continuum, the behaviour of systems made of elements of different size is pointed out. It is also shown that for anisotropic materials, even in the elastic case, the micropolar solution in general does not tend to the classical solution when the size of the elements vanishes.  相似文献

In this paper the constitutive theory for nonlocal micropolar continua which was proposed by A. C. Eringen is extended to the cases for nonlocal micropolar continua with implicity and with multiple interactions. Here nonlocal micropolar thermoelastic solids with implicity and with multiple interactions are cited as instances to illustrate the procedure for the establishment of their constitutive theories as well as two relevant theorems concerning the constitutive theories for those solids are given.  相似文献

The purpose is to reestablish rather complete surface conservation laws for micropolar thermomechanical continua from the translation and the rotation invariances of the general balance law. The generalized energy-momentum and energy-moment of momentum tensors are presented. The concrete forms of surface conservation laws for micropolar thermomechanical continua are derived . The existing related results are naturally derived as special cases from the results proposed in this paper . The incomplete degrees of the existing surface conservation laws are clearly seen from the process of the deduction. The surface conservation laws for nonlocal micropolar thermomechanical continua may be easily obtained via localization .  相似文献

The existing fundamental laws of thermodynamics for micropolar continuum field theories are restudied and their incompleteness is pointed out. New first and second fundamental laws for thermostatics and thermodynamics for micropolar continua are postulated. From them all equilibrium equations and the entropy inequality of thermostatics as well as all balance equations and the entropy rate inequalities are naturally and simultaneously deduced. The comparisons between the new results presented here and the corresponding results demonstrated in existing monographs and textbooks concerning micropolar continuum mechanics are made at any time. It should be emphasized to note that, the problem of why the local balance equation of energy and the local entropy inequality could not be obtained from the existing fundamental laws of thermodynamics for micropolar continua, is believed to be clarified.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study non-periodic masonries – typical of historical buildings – by means of a perturbation approach and to evaluate the effect of a random perturbation on the elastic response of a periodic masonry wall. The random masonry is obtained starting from a periodic running bond pattern. A random perturbation on the horizontal positions of the vertical interfaces between the blocks which form the masonry wall is introduced. In this way, the height of the blocks is uniform, while their width in the horizontal direction is random. The perturbation is limited such as each block has still exactly 6 neighboring blocks. In a first discrete model, the blocks are modeled as rigid bodies connected by elastic interfaces (mortar thin joints). In other words, masonry is seen as a “skeleton” in which the interactions between the rigid blocks are represented by forces and moments which depend on their relative displacements and rotations. A second continuous model is based on the homogenization of the discrete model. Explicit upper and lower bounds on the effective elastic moduli of the homogenized continuous model are obtained and compared to the well-known effective elastic moduli of the regular periodic masonry. It is found that the effective moduli are not very sensitive to the random perturbation (less than 10%). At the end, the Monte Carlo simulation method is used to compare the discrete random model and the continuous model at the structural level (a panel undergoing in plane actions). The randomness of the geometry requires the generation of several samples of size L of the discrete masonry. For a sample of size L, the structural discrete problem is solved using the same numerical procedure adopted in [Cecchi, A., Sab, K., 2004. A comparison between a 3D discrete model and two homogenized plate models for periodic elastic brickwork, International Journal of Solids Structures 41 (9–10), 2259–2276] and the average solution over the samples gives an estimation which depends on L. As L increases, an asymptotic limit is reached. One issue is to find the minimum size for L and to compare the asymptotic average solution to the one obtained from the continuous homogenized model.  相似文献

A micromorphic electroelastic model for polarized liquid crystals is proposed on the basis of a representation of electric multipoles in terms of microdeformation. Nematic liquid crystals are modeled as micropolar continua endowed with intrinsic electric dipole and quadrupole. A nonlinear dimensionless problem for a homogeneous nematic layer is formulated and solved numerically. The existence of a threshold electric potential is discussed, and the corresponding linearized system is also obtained to compare results on small values of deformation and electric field. Differently from common results of the classical continuum approach, asymmetric deformations and electric potentials within the layer are obtained due to the occurrence of non-null intrinsic quadrupole.  相似文献

A homogenization procedure for finding the bending stiffness of a 2D regular lattice with random local interactions is proposed. The kinematic and static methods are used to provide explicit upper and lower bounds for the homogenized moduli. The proposed homogenization procedure is applied to a masonry obtained by a random perturbation of the periodic running bond masonry [Cecchi, A., Sab, K., 2009. Discrete and continuous models for in plane loaded random elastic brickwork. Eur. J. Mech. A 28, 610–625].A numerical evaluation of the scatter between the discrete models and the 2D Love–Kirchhoff model is performed on a test case, for various values of the random perturbation parameter and of the parameter that characterizes the heterogeneity of the wall. As expected, when the number of heterogeneities in the structure is large enough, the average response of the random discrete model converges to an asymptotic response. It is shown that this asymptotic response is very close to that of the periodic discrete model which is in turn very close to the response of the deterministic homogenized model. Similarly to the conclusion of Cecchi and Sab [Cecchi A., Sab K., 2009. Discrete and continuous models for in plane loaded random elastic brickwork. Eur. J. Mech. A. 28, 610–625.] dedicated to in-plane loading, the present results concerning out-of-plane loading show (both by means of a discrete model and a homogenized model) that the running bond pattern may be used successfully to analyze historical masonries with blocks having irregular widths in the horizontal direction.  相似文献

In this paper, the concept of hypo-elasticity is generalized to the micropolar continuum theory, and the general forms of the constitutive equations of the micropolar hypo-elastic materials are presented. A new co-rotational objective rate whose spin is the micropolar gyration tensor is introduced which describes the deformation of the material in view of an observer attached to the micro-structure. As special case, simplified versions of the proposed constitutive equations are given in which the same fourth-order elasticity tensors are used as in the micropolar linear elasticity. A 2-D finite element formulation for large elastic deformation of micropolar hypo-elastic media based on the simplified constitutive equations in conjunction with Jaumann and gyration rates is presented. As an example, buckling of a shallow arc is examined, and it is shown that an increase in the micropolar material parameters results in an increase in the buckling load of the arc. Also, it is shown that micropolar effects become important for deformations taking place at small scales.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a new united approach to formulate the equivalent micropolar constitutive relation of two-dimensional (2-D) periodic cellular material to capture its non-local properties and to explain the size effects in its structural analysis. The new united approach takes both the displacement compatibility and the equilibrium of forces and moments into consideration, where Taylor series expansion of the displacement and rotation fields and the extended aver-aging procedure with an explicit enforcement of equilibrium are adopted in the micromechanical analysis of a unit cell. In numerical examples, the effective micropolar constants obtained in this paper and others derived in the literature are used for the equivalent micropolar continuum simulation of cellular solids. The solutions from the equivalent analysis are compared with the discrete simulation solutions of the cellu-lar solids. It is found that the micropolar constants developed in this paper give satisfying results of equivalent analysis for the periodic cellular material.  相似文献

In this paper, the concept of hyper-elasticity in the micropolar continuum theory is investigated. The restrictions on the fourth-order elasticity tensors are investigated. Using the representation theorems, a general form of constitutive equations for micropolar hyper-elastic isotropic materials is presented. As some special cases, generalizations of the neo-Hookean and Mooney-Rivlin type materials to the micropolar continuum theory are presented. The generalized constitutive equations reduce to those of the microplar linear elasticity theory when the deformations are infinitesimal. Also, Updated Lagrangian finite element formulations for the micropolar hyper-elastic materials are presented. Considering two planar examples, it is shown that an increase in the micropolar parameter results in the reduction of the deformation of the bodies. Also, it is shown that for a specimen with very small dimensions, e.g. in the micron level, the micropolar effects are more sensible. Furthermore, it is shown that the influence of the micropolar parameters is dependent not only on the size of the body, but also to its geometry and loading conditions. For the problems in which the deformation is very close to a homogeneous state, the micropolar effects are negligible.  相似文献

In this paper the definition of micropolar protoclastic material bodies is given and with the help of the principle of virtual power, the variational principle of those bodies is derived. In terms of that same idea and the definition of micropolar protopotential presented here, the constitutive equations for nonlocal micropolar elastic continua are naturally derived.  相似文献
