In this paper, we present the homogenization of an anisotropic hollow layered tube with discontinuous elastic coefficients. We focus on some aspects of technological importance, such as the effective coefficients of anisotropic materials, the behavior of the homogenized displacements and stresses, the discontinuities of in-plane shear, hoop and longitudinal stresses, the homogenization-induced anisotropy in the isotropic case. We conclude that the problem of cylindrically anisotropic tubes under extension, torsion, shearing and pressuring is stable by homogenization and we define the effective tensor of the material elastic coefficients. Some numerical examples confirm the theoretical results.  相似文献

Thermoelastic problem for a composite solid with initial stresses is considered on the basis of the asymptotic homogenization method. The homogenized model is constructed by means of the two-scale asymptotic homogenization techniques. The major result of a present paper is that the effective (homogenized) thermoelastic characteristics of the composite material depend not only on local distributions of all types of material characteristics: local elastic properties, local thermoelastic properties, but also on local initial stresses. Therefore it is shown that for the inhomogeneous (composite) material local initial stresses contribute towards values of the effective characteristics of the material. This kind of interaction is not possible for the homogeneous materials. From the mathematical viewpoint, the asymptotic homogenization procedure is equivalent to the computation of G-limit of the corresponding operator. And the above noted phenomenon is based on the fact that in the considering case the G-limit of a sum is not equal to the sum of G-limits. The developed general homogenized model is illustrated in the particular case of the small initial stresses, which is common for the practical mechanical problems. The explicit formulas for the effective thermoelastic characteristics and numerical results are obtained for a laminated composite solid with the initial stresses.  相似文献

The paper presents new continuous and discrete variational formulations for the homogenization analysis of inelastic solid materials undergoing finite strains. The point of departure is a general internal variable formulation that determines the inelastic response of the constituents of a typical micro-structure as a generalized standard medium in terms of an energy storage and a dissipation function. Consistent with this type of finite inelasticity we develop a new incremental variational formulation of the local constitutive response, where a quasi-hyperelastic micro-stress potential is obtained from a local minimization problem with respect to the internal variables. It is shown that this local minimization problem determines the internal state of the material for finite increments of time. We specify the local variational formulation for a distinct setting of multi-surface inelasticity and develop a numerical solution technique based on a time discretization of the internal variables. The existence of the quasi-hyperelastic stress potential allows the extension of homogenization approaches of finite elasticity to the incremental setting of finite inelasticity. Focussing on macro-deformation-driven micro-structures, we develop a new incremental variational formulation of the global homogenization problem for generalized standard materials at finite strains, where a quasi-hyperelastic macro-stress potential is obtained from a global minimization problem with respect to the fine-scale displacement fluctuation field. It is shown that this global minimization problem determines the state of the micro-structure for finite increments of time. We consider three different settings of the global variational problem for prescribed displacements, non-trivial periodic displacements and prescribed stresses on the boundary of the micro-structure and develop numerical solution methods based on a spatial discretization of the fine-scale displacement fluctuation field. Representative applications of the proposed minimization principles are demonstrated for a constitutive model of crystal plasticity and the homogenization problem of texture analysis in polycrystalline aggregates.  相似文献

This work is devoted to a study of the classical homogenization process and its influence on the behavior of a composite under non-linear dynamic loading due to contact and friction. First, the general problem of convergence of numerical models subjected to dynamic contact with friction loading is addressed. The use of a regularized friction law allows obtaining good convergence of such models. This study shows that for a dynamic contact with friction loading, the classical homogenization process, coupled with an homogenization of the frictional contact, enables replacing the entire heterogeneous model by a homogenized one. The dynamic part of the frictional contact must be homogenized by modifying the dynamic parameter of the friction law. Modification of the dynamic parameter of the friction law is function of the type and regime of instability. A calculation of a homogenized friction coefficient is presented in view to homogenizing the static part of the frictional contact when the friction coefficient is not constant over the contact surface. Finally matrix and heterogeneities stresses in the heterogeneous models are identified by using the relocalization process and a frictional contact dynamic analysis of a homogeneous model.  相似文献

The effective mechanical behavior of an elasto-plastic matrix reinforced with a random and homogeneous distribution of aligned elastic ellipsoids was obtained by the finite element simulation of a representative volume element (RVE) of the microstructure and by homogenization methods. In the latter, the composite behavior was modeled by linearization of the local behavior through the use of the tangent or secant stiffness tensors of the phases. “Quasi-exact” results for the tensile deformation were attained by averaging of the stress-strain curves coming from the numerical simulation of RVEs containing a few dozens of ellipsoids. These results were used as benchmarks to assess the accuracy of the homogenization models. The best approximations to the reference numerical results were provided by the incremental and the second-order secant methods, while the classical or first-order secant approach overestimated the composite flow stress, particularly when the composite was deformed in the longitudinal direction. The discrepancies among the homogenization models and the numerical results were assessed from the analysis of the stress and strain microfields provided by the numerical simulations, which demonstrated the dominant effect of the localization of the plastic strain in the matrix on the accuracy of the homogenization models.  相似文献

In this paper a homogenization procedure for the estimation of the failure surface of a quasi-periodic masonry, based on a mean stresses approach through the analysis of the Statistically Equivalent Periodic Unit Cell (SEPUC), is shown. The mean stresses approach consists in the identification of critical states for the homogenized continuum by means of an overall failure criterion, function of the mean stress state of each constituent. These macroscopic tensors are evaluated in the elastic field. The SEPUC definition refers to a statistical criterion applied to a population of Periodic Unit Cells generated taking into account the geometrical features of the quasi-periodic texture; moreover it is validated on the basis of the homogenized elastic properties in terms of components and Frobenius norm of the elastic matrix. By a multi-objective optimization approach, the obtained results highlight that the proposed SEPUC can be used to estimate the failure surface.  相似文献

All real bodies are inhomogeneous, though in many such bodies the inhomogeneity is “mild” in that the response of the bodies can be “approximated” well by the response of a homogeneous approximation. In this study we explore the status of such approximations when one is concerned with bodies whose response is nonlinear. We find that significant departures in response can occur between that of a “mildly” inhomogeneous body and its homogeneous approximation (if the approximate model is restricted to a certain class), both quantitatively and qualitatively. We illustrate this fact within the context of a specific boundary value problem, the inflation of an inhomogeneous spherical shell. We also discuss the inappropriateness of homogenization procedures that lead to a homogenized stored energy for the body when in fact what is required is a homogenized model that predicts the appropriate stresses as they invariably determine the failure or integrity of the body.  相似文献

In electric machines due to high currents and resistive losses (joule heating) heat is produced. To avoid damages by overheating the design of effective cooling systems is required. Therefore the knowledge of heat sources and heat transfer processes is necessary. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a good and effective calculation method for the temperature analysis based on homogenization techniques. These methods have been applied for the stator windings in a slot of an electric machine consisting of copper wires and resin. The key quantity here is an effective thermal conductivity, which characterizes the heterogeneous wire resin-arrangement inside the stator slot. To illustrate the applicability of the method, the analysis of a simplified, homogenized model is compared with the detailed analysis of temperature behavior inside a slot of an electric machine according to the heat generation. We considered here only the stationary situation. The achieved numerical results are accurate and show that the applied homogenization technique works in practice. Finally the results of simulations for the two cases, the original model of the slot and the homogenized model chosen for the slot (unit cell), are compared to experimental results.  相似文献

Recent years have seen considerable research success in the field of dynamic homogenization which seeks to define frequency dependent effective properties for heterogeneous composites for the purpose of studying wave propagation. There is an approximation involved in replacing a heterogeneous composite with its homogenized equivalent. In this paper we propose a quantification to this approximation. We study the problem of reflection at the interface of a layered periodic composite and its dynamic homogenized equivalent. It is shown that if the homogenized parameters are to appropriately represent the layered composite in a finite setting and at a given frequency, then reflection at this special interface must be close to zero at that frequency. We show that a comprehensive homogenization scheme proposed in an earlier paper results in negligible reflection in the low frequency regime, thereby suggesting its applicability in a finite composite setting. In this paper we explicitly study a 2-phase composite and a 3-phase composite which exhibits negative effective properties over its second branch. We show that based upon the reflected energy profile of the two cases, there exist good arguments for considering the second branch of a 3-phase composite a true negative branch with negative group velocity. Through arguments of calculated reflected energy we note that infinite-domain homogenization is much more applicable to finite cases of the 3-phase composite than it is to the 2-phase composite. In fact, the applicability of dynamic homogenization extends to most of the first branch (negligible reflection) for the 3-phase composite. This is in contrast with a periodic composite without local resonance where the approximation of homogenization worsens with increasing frequency over the first branch and is demonstrably bad on the second branch. We also study the effect of the interface location on the applicability of homogenization. The results open intriguing questions regarding the effects of replacing a semi-infinite periodic composite with its Bloch-wave (infinite domain) dynamic properties on such phenomenon as negative refraction.  相似文献

Multi-scale analysis using the asymptotic homogenization method is becoming a matter of concern for microstructural design and analysis of advanced heterogeneous materials. One of the problems is the lack of the experimental verification of the multi-scale analysis. Hence, it is applied to the porous alumina with needle-like pores to compare the predicted homogenized properties with the experimental result. The complex and random microstructure was modeled three-dimensionally with the help of the digital image-based modeling technique. An appropriate size of the unit microstructure model was investigated. The predicted elastic properties agreed quite well with the measured values. Next, a four-point bending test was simulated and finally the microscopic stress distribution was predicted. However, it was very hard to evaluate the calculated microscopic stress quantitatively. Therefore, a numerical algorithm to help understanding the three-dimensional and complex stress distribution in the random porous microstructure is proposed. An original histogram display of the stress distribution is shown to be effective to evaluate the stress concentration in the porous materials.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a model of a homogenized fluid-saturated deformable porous medium. To account for the double porosity the Biot model is considered at the mesoscale with a scale-dependent permeability in compartments representing the second-level porosity. This model is treated by the homogenization procedure based on the asymptotic analysis of periodic “microstructure”. When passing to the limit, auxiliary microscopic problems are introduced, which provide the corrector basis functions that are needed to compute the effective material parameters. The macroscopic problem describes the deformation-induced Darcy flow in the primary porosities whereas the microflow in the double porosity is responsible for the fading memory effects via the macroscopic poro-visco-elastic constitutive law. For the homogenization procedure, we use the periodic unfolding method. We discuss also the stress and flow recovery at multiple scales characterizing the heterogeneous material. The model is proposed as a theoretical basis to describe compact bone behavior on multiple scales.  相似文献

Evolution of properties during processing of materials depends on the underlying material microstructure. A finite element homogenization approach is presented for calculating the evolution of macro-scale properties during processing of microstructures. A mathematically rigorous sensitivity analysis of homogenization is presented that is used to identify optimal forging rates in processes that would lead to a desired microstructure response. Macro-scale parameters such as forging rates are linked with microstructure deformation using boundary conditions drawn from the theory of multi-scale homogenization. Homogenized stresses at the macro-scale are obtained through volume-averaging laws. A constitutive framework for thermo-elastic–viscoplastic response of single crystals is utilized along with a fully-implicit Lagrangian finite element algorithm for modelling microstructure evolution. The continuum sensitivity method (CSM) used for designing processes involves differentiation of the governing field equations of homogenization with respect to the processing parameters and development of the weak forms for the corresponding sensitivity equations that are solved using finite element analysis. The sensitivity of the deformation field within the microstructure is exactly defined and an averaging principle is developed to compute the sensitivity of homogenized stresses at the macro-scale due to perturbations in the process parameters. Computed sensitivities are used within a gradient-based optimization framework for controlling the response of the microstructure. Development of texture and stress–strain response in 2D and 3D FCC aluminum polycrystalline aggregates using the homogenization algorithm is compared with both Taylor-based simulations and published experimental results. Processing parameters that would lead to a desired equivalent stress–strain curve in a sample poly-crystalline microstructure are identified for single and two-stage loading using the design algorithm.  相似文献

In this work we present a thermomechanical multiscale constitutive model for materials with microstructure. In these materials thermal effects at microscale have an impact on the effective macroscopic stress. As a result, it turns out that the homogenized stress depends upon the macroscopic temperature and its gradient. In order to allow this interplay to be thermodynamically valid, we resort to a macroscopic extended thermodynamics whose elements are derived from the microscopic behavior using homogenization concepts. Hence, the thermodynamics implications of this new class of multiscale models are discussed. A variational approach based on the Hill–Mandel Principle of Macro-homogeneity, and which makes use of the volume averaging concept over a local representative volume element (RVE), is employed to derive the thermal and mechanical equilibrium problems at the RVE level and the corresponding homogenization expressions for the effective heat flux and stress. The material behavior at the RVE level is described through standard phenomenological constitutive models. To sum up, the novel contribution of the model presented here is that it allows to include the microscopic temperature fluctuation field, obtained from the multiscale thermal analysis, in the micro-mechanical problem at the RVE level while keeping thermodynamic consistency.  相似文献

This paper discusses evaluation of influence of microscopic uncertainty on a homogenized macroscopic elastic property of an inhomogeneous material. In order to analyze the influence, the perturbation-based homogenization method is used. A higher order perturbation-based analysis method for investigating stochastic characteristics of a homogenized elastic tensor and an equivalent elastic property of a composite material is formulated. As a numerical example, macroscopic stochastic characteristics such as an expected value or variance, which is caused by microscopic uncertainty in material properties, of a homogenized elastic tensor and homogenized equivalent elastic property of unidirectional fiber reinforced plastic are investigated. The macroscopic stochastic variation caused by microscopic uncertainty in component materials such as Young’s modulus or Poisson’s ratio variation is evaluated using the perturbation-based homogenization method. The numerical results are compared with the results of the Monte-Carlo simulation, validity, effectiveness and a limitation of the perturbation-based homogenization method is investigated. With comparing the results using the first-order perturbation-based method, effectiveness of a higher order perturbation is also investigated.  相似文献

A mechanistic model with rigid elements and interfaces suitable for the non-linear dynamic analysis of full scale 3D masonry buildings is presented. The model relies into two steps: in the first step, a simplified homogenization is performed at the meso-scale to deduce the mechanical properties of a macroscopic material, to be used in structural applications; the second step relies into the implementation of a Rigid Body and Spring Model (RBSM) constituted by rigid elements linked with homogenized interfaces. In the homogenization step, a running bond elementary cell is discretized with 24 three-node plane-stress elastic triangular elements and non-linear interfaces representing mortar joints. It is shown how the mechanical problem in the unit cell is characterized by few displacement variables and how homogenized stress–strain curves can be evaluated by means of a semi-analytical approach. The second step relies on the implementation of the homogenized curves into a RBSM, where an entire masonry structure can be analyzed in the non-linear dynamic range through a discretization with rigid elements and inelastic interfaces. Non-linear structural analyses are conducted on a church façade interconnected with a portion of the perpendicular walls and on a small masonry building, for which experimental and numerical data are available in the literature, in order to show how quite reliable results may be obtained with a limited computational effort.  相似文献

Using the orbital-free density functional theory as a model theory, we present an analysis of the field theoretic approach to quasi-continuum method. In particular, by perturbation method and multiple scale analysis, we provide a formal justification for the validity of numerical coarse-graining of various fields in the quasi-continuum reduction of field theories by taking the homogenization limit. Further, we derive the homogenized equations that govern the behavior of electronic fields in regions of smooth deformations. Using Fourier analysis, we determine the far-field solutions for these fields in the presence of local defects, and subsequently estimate cell-size effects in computed defect energies.  相似文献

The objective of this research is to develop a macroscopic theory, which can provide the connection between macro-mechanics and micro-mechanics in characterizing the micro-stress of composite laminates in regions of high macroscopic stress gradients. The micro-polar theory, a class of higher-order elasticity theory, of composite laminate mechanics is implemented in a well-known Pipes–Pagano free edge boundary problem. The micro-polar homogenization method to determine the micro-polar anisotropic effective elastic moduli is presented. A displacement-based finite element method based on micro-polar theory in anisotropic solids is developed in analyzing composite laminates. The effects of fiber volume fraction and cell size on the normal stress along the artificial interface resulting from ply homogenization of the composite laminate are also investigated. The stress response based on micro-polar theory is compared with those deduced from the micro-mechanics and classical elasticity theory. Special attention of the investigation focuses on the stress fields near the free edge where the high macro-stress gradient occurs. The normal stresses along the artificial interface and especially, the micro-stress along the fiber/matrix interface on the critical cell near the free edge where the high macro-stress gradient detected are the focus of this investigation. These micro-stresses are expected to dominate the failure initiation process in composite laminate. A micro-stress recovery scheme based on micro-polar analysis for the prediction of interface micro-stresses in the critical cell near the free edge is found to be in very good agreement with “exact” micro-stress solutions. It is demonstrated that the micro-polar theory is able to capture the micro-stress accurately from the homogenized solutions.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a micromechanical analysis of damage and related inelastic deformation in saturated porous quasi brittle materials. The materials are weakened by randomly distributed microcracks and saturated by interstitial fluid with drained and undrained conditions. The emphasis is put on the closed cracks under compression-dominated stresses. The material damage is related to the frictional sliding on crack surface and described by a local scalar variable. The effective properties of the materials are determined using a linear homogenization approach, based on the extension of Eshelby’s inclusion solution to penny shaped cracks. The inelastic behavior induced by microcracks is described in the framework of the irreversible thermodynamics. As an original contribution, the potential energy of the saturated materials weakened by closed frictional microcracks is determined and formulated as a sum of an elastic part and a plastic part, the latter entirely induced by frictional sliding of microcracks. The influence of fluid pressure is accounted for in the friction criterion through the concept of local effective stress at microcracks. We show that the Biot’s effective stress controls the evolution of total strain while the local Terzaghi’s effective stress controls the evolution of plastic strain. Further, the frictional sliding between crack lips generates volumetric dilatancy and reduction in fluid pressure. Applications of the proposed model to typical brittle rocks are presented with comparisons between numerical results and experimental data in both drained and undrained triaxial tests.  相似文献

The continuum modeling of the mechanical behavior of nanowires has recently attracted much attention due to its simplicity and efficiency. However, there are still some critical issues to be solved. In this paper, we demonstrate the importance of accounting for the effects of initial stresses in the nanowires that are caused by deformation due to surface stresses; we note that such initial stresses have previously been neglected in most existing continuum models. By considering the local geometrical nonlinearity of strains during the incremental flexural motion, a new formulation of the Euler–Bernoulli beam model for nanowires is developed through the incremental deformation theory, in which effects of the surface stress, the surface-induced initial stress and surface elasticity are naturally incorporated. It is found through comparisons to existing experimental and computational results for both fcc metal and ceramic nanowires that the surface-induced initial stresses, which are neglected in the Young–Laplace model, can significantly influence the overall mechanical properties of nanowires. We additionally demonstrate and quantify the errors induced by using the Young–Laplace model due to its approximation of surface stresses acting on only the top and bottom surfaces of nanowires.  相似文献
