Monitoring the levels of potentially toxic metal (PTM) ions (e.g., Hg(2+), Pb(2+), Cu(2+)) in aquatic ecosystems is important because these ions can have severe effects on human health and the environment. Gold (Au) nanomaterials are attractive sensing materials because of their unique size- and shape-dependent optical properties. This review focuses on optical assays for Hg(2+), Pb(2+), and Cu(2+) ions using functionalized Au nanomaterials. The syntheses of functionalized Au nanomaterials are discussed. We briefly review sensing approaches based on changes in absorbance resulting from metal ion-induced aggregation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) or direct deposition of metal ions onto Au NPs. The super-quenching properties of Au NPs allow them to be employed in 'turn on' and 'turn off' fluorescence approaches for the sensitive and selective detection of Hg(2+), Pb(2+), and Cu(2+) ions. We highlight approaches based on fluorescence quenching through analyte-induced aggregation or the formation of metallophilic complexes of Au nanodots (NDs). We discuss the roles of several factors affecting the selectivity and sensitivity of the nanosensors toward the analytes: the size of the Au nanomaterial, the length and sequence of the DNA or the nature of the thiol, the surface density of the recognition ligand, and the ionic strength and pH of the buffer solution. In addition, we emphasize the potential of using new nanomaterials (e.g., fluorescent silver nanoclusters) for the detection of PTM ions.  相似文献

4-Nonylphenols (NPs) are very important environmentally relevant substances. They are persistent, toxic, endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are priority hazardous substances of the EU Water Framework Directive. NPs are degradation products of 4-nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), a widely used group of nonionic surfactants. The technical synthesis of NP leads to a complex mixture of NPs consisting of isomeric compounds that have different branched nonyl side chains. It has recently become clear that an isomer-specific view is absolutely necessary when it comes to correctly evaluating the biological effects of NPs and their behavior in the environment, including degradation processes. To rationalize the identification of individual NP isomers in scientific studies, we have developed a numbering system for all possible NP isomers that follows the IUPAC rules of substituent characterization in alkylphenols. The 211 possible constitutional isomers of NP are numbered according to a hierarchical and logical system. In the future, multidimensional coupling systems—for example GC×GC-TOF-MS—will be needed to study these highly complex class of substances. Toxicity of nanomaterials   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nanoscience has matured significantly during the last decade as it has transitioned from bench top science to applied technology. Presently, nanomaterials are used in a wide variety of commercial products such as electronic components, sports equipment, sun creams and biomedical applications. There are few studies of the long-term consequences of nanoparticles on human health, but governmental agencies, including the United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Japan's Ministry of Health, have recently raised the question of whether seemingly innocuous materials such as carbon-based nanotubes should be treated with the same caution afforded known carcinogens such as asbestos. Since nanomaterials are increasing a part of everyday consumer products, manufacturing processes, and medical products, it is imperative that both workers and end-users be protected from inhalation of potentially toxic NPs. It also suggests that NPs may need to be sequestered into products so that the NPs are not released into the atmosphere during the product's life or during recycling. Further, non-inhalation routes of NP absorption, including dermal and medical injectables, must be studied in order to understand possible toxic effects. Fewer studies to date have addressed whether the body can eventually eliminate nanomaterials to prevent particle build-up in tissues or organs. This critical review discusses the biophysicochemical properties of various nanomaterials with emphasis on currently available toxicology data and methodologies for evaluating nanoparticle toxicity (286 references).  相似文献

The development of nanomaterials for use as bio-recognition elements is important in the evolution of biosensing systems. In the present article we present a sensing system based on copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) for the detection of phenolic compounds and pesticides. This sensor takes advantage of the interactions of CuO NPs with toxic compounds that in turn generate an electrochemical signal related to the concentration of the pollutants.  相似文献

Nanomaterials exhibit distinctive physicochemical properties and promise a wide range of applications from nanotechnology to nanomedicine, which raise serious concerns about their potential environmental impacts on ecosystems. Unlike any conventional chemicals, nanomaterials are highly heterogeneous, and their properties can alter over time. These unique characteristics underscore the importance of study of their properties and effects on living organisms in real time at single nanoparticle (NP) resolution. Here we report the development of single-NP plasmonic microscopy and spectroscopy (dark-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy, DFOMS) and ultrasensitive in vivo assay (cleavage-stage zebrafish embryos, critical aquatic species) to study transport and toxicity of single silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs, 95.4 ± 16.0 nm) on embryonic developments. We synthesized and characterized purified and stable (non-aggregation) Ag NPs, determined their sizes and doses (number), and their transport mechanisms and effects on embryonic development in vivo in real time at single-NP resolution. We found that single Ag NPs passively entered the embryos through their chorionic pores via random Brownian diffusion and stayed inside the embryos throughout their entire development (120 h), suggesting that the embryos can bio-concentrate trace NPs from their environment. Our studies show that higher doses and larger sizes of Ag NPs cause higher toxic effects on embryonic development, demonstrating that the embryos can serve as ultrasensitive in vivo assays to screen biocompatibility and toxicity of the NPs and monitor their potential release into aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The number of products on the market containing engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has increased significantly, and concerns have been raised regarding their ecotoxicological effects. Environmental safety assessments as well as relevant and reliable ecotoxicological data are required for the safe and sustainable use of ENPs. Although the number of publications on the ecotoxicological effects and uptake of ENPs is rapidly expanding, the applicability of the reported data for hazard assessment is questionable. A major knowledge gap is whether nanoparticle effects occur when test organisms are exposed to ENPs in aquatic test systems. Filling this gap is not straightforward, because of the broad range of ENPs and the different behavior of ENPs compared to “ordinary” (dissolved) chemicals in the ecotoxicity test systems. The risk of generating false negatives, and false positives, in the currently used tests is high, and in most cases difficult to assess. This Review outlines some of the pitfalls in the aquatic toxicity testing of ENPs which may lead to misinterpretation of test results. Response types are also proposed to reveal potential nanoparticle effects in the aquatic test organisms.  相似文献

Understanding interactions between nanoparticles (NPs) with biological matter, particularly cells, is becoming increasingly important due to their growing application in medicine and materials, and consequent biological and environmental exposure. For NPs to be utilised to their full potential, it is important to correlate their functional characteristics with their physical properties, which may also be used to predict any adverse cellular responses. A key mechanism for NPs to impart toxicity is to gain cellular entry directly. Many parameters affect the behaviour of nanomaterials in a cellular environment particularly their interactions with cell membranes, including their size, shape and surface chemistry as well as factors such as the cell type, location and external environment (e.g. other surrounding materials, temperature, pH and pressure). Aside from in vitro and in vivo experiments, model cell membrane systems have been used in both computer simulations and physicochemical experiments to elucidate the mechanisms for NP cellular entry. Here we present a brief overview of the effects of NPs physical parameters on their cellular uptake, with focuses on 1) related research using model membrane systems and physicochemical methodologies; and 2) proposed physical mechanisms for NP cellular entrance, with implications to their nanotoxicity. We conclude with a suggestion that the energetic process of NP cellular entry can be evaluated by studying the effects of NPs on lipid mesophase transitions, as the molecular deformations and thus the elastic energy cost are analogous between such transitions and endocytosis. This presents an opportunity for contributions to understanding nanotoxicity from a physicochemical perspective.  相似文献

Nanomaterials have one dimension <100 nm and possess physico-chemical properties dictated by their unusually small size, large surface area, shape and chemical composition. New properties of nanomaterials have boosted their production and industrial applications in many fields (e.g., microelectronics, catalysis, fuel cells, materials science, textiles, biotechnology and medicine). In biomedical fields, nanomaterials are of the appropriate dimensions to interact with biological matter. However, they may also have negative effects on biological systems. Nanotechnology is a major, innovative, scientific and economic growth area, but the increasing production and use of nanomaterials have led to calls for more information regarding the potential impacts that their release may have on human health and the environment. This review addresses analytical approaches for characterization and quantification of nanomaterials in the environment and recent studies on their occurrence, fate and behavior.  相似文献

Highly toxic metals (Hg2+, Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cr6+) in environment waters greatly threaten the health of human beings and ecosystem. Photoluminescent sensing has been considered as an effective technology for metals monitoring in environment medium. In this paper, photoluminescent materials for the sensing of highly toxic metal ions (HTMs) were reviewed. These materials were categorized as downconversion materials and upconversion nanomaterials, according to the mechanism of photon conversion. Downconversion materials generally include organic probes, quantum dots, and Au or Ag nanomaterials. Together with upconversion nanomaterials, they are introduced in terms of textures and modification methods. The working mechanisms were introduced emphatically as well as their advantages and disadvantages for HTMs sensing. In Section 4, the conclusion and perspectives of photoluminescent sensing materials are summarized, and it is expected that this review will be helpful for the understanding and fundamental studies of photoluminescent materials for the detection of HTMs.  相似文献

We developed a method for the fabrication of novel biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs) from lignin which are apparently non‐toxic for microalgae and yeast. We compare two alternative methods for the synthesis of lignin NPs which result in particles of very different stability upon change of pH. The first method is based on precipitation of low‐sulfonated lignin from an ethylene glycol solution by using diluted acidic aqueous solutions, which yields lignin NPs that are stable over a wide range of pH. The second approach is based on the acidic precipitation of lignin from a high‐pH aqueous solution which produces NPs stable only at low pH. Our study reveals that lignin NPs from the ethylene glycol‐based precipitation contain densely packed lignin domains which explain the stability of the NPs even at high pH. We characterised the properties of the produced lignin NPs and determined their loading capacities with hydrophilic actives. The results suggest that these NPs are highly porous and consist of smaller lignin domains. Tests with microalgae like Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and yeast incubated in lignin NP dispersions indicated that these NPs lack measurable effect on the viability of these microorganisms. Such biodegradable and environmentally compatible NPs can find applications as drug delivery vehicles, stabilisers of cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, or in other areas where they may replace more expensive and potentially toxic nanomaterials.  相似文献

The paper-based sensing devices have drawn a broad interest in analytical chemistry for colorimetric and fluorescent-based analysis of biological, environmental, clinical, and food samples. It is due to the simple, rapid, biodegradable, user-friendly, less expensive, and low waste generation into the environment. Here, the recent development of paper-based sensors fabricated with different noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and semiconductor and carbon quantum dots (QDs) is demonstrated to analyze several chemical substances from various samples. User-friendly and portable recording devices such as digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, etc. along with color detecting softwares are employed to measure the color intensity of nanomaterials fabricated paper devices after the deposition of a sample solution containing various chemical substances. The advantages and disadvantages of incorporating nanomaterials in the paper substrate (direct deposition, inkjet printing, screen printing and wax printing) are illustrated. The mechanism for colorimetric, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and chemiluminescence sensing using noble metal NPs (Ag, Cu, and Au), semiconductors, and carbon QDs for the determination of metal ions, anions, pesticides, biomolecules, and other toxic chemical substances are discussed. Thus, this review article would be highly useful for scientists and researchers to design colorimetric sensors to monitor chemical toxicants in clinical, environment, foods, and many other related samples.  相似文献

Nanotechnology is a rapidly emerging field of great interest and promise. As new materials are developed and commercialized, hazard information also needs to be generated to reassure regulators, workers, and consumers that these materials can be used safely. The biological properties of nanomaterials are closely tied to the physical characteristics, including size, shape, dissolution rate, agglomeration state, and surface chemistry, to name a few. Furthermore, these properties can be altered by the medium used to suspend or disperse these water-insoluble particles. However, the current toxicology literature lacks much of the characterization information that allows toxicologists and regulators to develop “rules of thumb” that could be used to assess potential hazards. To effectively develop these rules, toxicologists need to know the characteristics of the particle that interacts with the biological system. This void leaves the scientific community with no options other than to evaluate all materials for all potential hazards. Lack of characterization could also lead to different laboratories reporting discordant results on seemingly the same test material because of subtle differences in the particle or differences in the dispersion medium used that resulted in altered properties and toxicity of the particle. For these reasons, good characterization using a minimal characterization data set should accompany and be required of all scientific publications on nanomaterials.  相似文献

Nowadays anticancer drugs (ADs), like other pharmaceuticals, are recognized as new emerging pollutants, meaning that they are not commonly monitored in the environment; however, they have great potential to enter the environment and cause adverse effects there. The current scientific literature highlights the problem of their presence in the aquatic environment by publishing more and more results on their analytics and ecotoxicological evaluation. In order to properly assess the risk associated with the presence of ADs in the environment, it is also necessary to investigate the processes that are important in understanding the environmental fate of these compounds. However, the state of knowledge on mobility of ADs in the environment is still very limited. Therefore, the main aim of our study was to investigate the sorption potential of two anticancer drugs, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and methotrexate (MTX), onto different soils. Special attention was paid to the determination of the influence of pH and ionic strength as well as presence of co-contaminants (cadmium (Cd2+) and another pharmaceutical—metoprolol (MET)) on the sorption of 5-FU and MTX onto soil. The obtained distribution coefficient values (Kd) ranged from 2.52 to 6.36 L·kg−1 and from 6.79 to 12.94 L·kg−1 for 5-FU and MTX, respectively. Investigated compounds may be classified as slightly or low mobile in the soil matrix (depending on soil). 5-FU may be recognized as more mobile in comparison to MET. It was proved that presence of other soil contaminants may strongly influence their mobility in soil structures. The investigated co-contaminant (MET) caused around 25-fold increased sorption of 5-FU, whereas diminished sorption of MTX. Moreover, the influence of environmental conditions such as pH and ionic strength on their sorption has been clearly demonstrated.  相似文献

Synthesis of nanomaterials is an emerging field due to their fascinating properties for applications in different field and green synthesis offers various advantages versus physical and chemical methods. Herein, green protocol has been adopted for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using seeds extract of strawberry. The Ag NPs were characterized using advanced techniques comprising UV/Vis, XRD, FTIR, SEM, DLS and EDX. The λmax for the Ag NPs was recorded at 405 nm. The functional groups present in the extract and involved in Ag ions reduction were determined using FTIR analysis. The SEM-EDX analysis confirmed the mono-dispersive nature of Ag NPs along with confirmation of elemental composition. The nanoparticles size distribution was recorded in 50-70 nm range. Bio-fabricated Ag NPs were appraised for antioxidant activity (DPPH with % inhibition 56.61 and ABTS with % inhibition 77.81) and antimicrobial activity, i.e., Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella sonnei, Halomonas halophile, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. It is concluded that these synthesized NPs could probably be applied as potent antibacterial and antioxidant materials.  相似文献

Though numerous nanomaterials with enzyme-like activities have been utilized as probes and sensors for detecting biological molecules, it is still challenging to construct highly sensitive detectors for biomarkers using polymeric materials. Benefiting from the π-d delocalization effect of electrons, excellent metal-chelating property, high electron transferability, and good chemical stability of π-conjugated phthalocyanine, the design of the copper phthalocyanine-based conjugated polymer nanoparticles (Cu-PcCP NPs) as a colorimetric sensor for a variety of biomarkers is reported. The Cu-PcCP NPs are synthesized through a simple microwave-assisted polymerization, and their chemical structures are thoroughly characterized. The colorimetric results of Cu-PcCP NPs demonstrate excellent peroxidase-like detecting activity and also great substrate selectivity than most of the reported Cu-based nanomaterials. The Cu-PcCP NPs can achieve a detection limit of 4.88 μM for the H2O2, 4.27 μM for the L-cysteine, and 21.10 μM for the glucose via a cascade catalytic system, which shows comparable detecting sensitivity as that of many earlier reported enzyme-like nanomaterials. Moreover, Cu-PcCP NPs present remarkable resistance to harsh conditions, including high temperature, low pH, and excessive salts. These highly specific π-conjugated copper-phthalocyanine nanoparticles not only overcome the current limitation of polymeric material-based sensors but also provide a new direction for designing next-generation enzyme-like nanomaterial-based colorimetric biosensors.  相似文献

The controlled design of robust, well reproducible, and functional nanomaterials made according to simple processes is of key importance to envision future applications. In the field of porous materials, tuning nanoparticle features such as specific area, pore size and morphology by adjusting simple parameters such as pH, temperature or solvent is highly needed. In this work, we address the tunable control of the pore morphology of mesoporous silica (MS) nanoparticles (NPs) with the sol-gel reaction temperature (Tsg). We show that the pore morphology of MS NPs alone or of MS shell covering iron oxide nanoparticles (IO NPs) can be easily tailored with Tsg orienting either towards stellar (ST) morphology (large radial pore of around 10 nm) below 80 °C or towards a worm-like (WL) morphology (small randomly oriented pores channel network, of 3–4 nm pore size) above 80 °C. The relaxometric and magnetothermal features of IO@STMS or IO@WLMS core shell NPs having respectively stellar or worm-like morphologies are compared and discussed to understand the role of the pore structure for MRI and magnetic hyperthermia applications.  相似文献

The elaboration of nanoparticles designed for technological applications in various fields such as catalysis, optics, magnetism, electronics… needs the strict control of their characteristics, especially chemical composition, crystalline structure, size, and shape. These characteristics bring the physical properties (color, magnetism, band gap…) of the material, and also the surface to volume ratio of particles which is of high importance when they are used as a chemically active or reactive support, in catalysis for instance. The nanoparticles may have also to be surface functionalized by various species, and/or dispersed in aqueous or non aqueous media. We will show that the aqueous chemistry of metal cations is a very versatile and attractive way for the design of oxide nanomaterials, allowing the control of size, shape, and crystalline structure for polymorphic materials. Aqueous surface chemistry, including adsorption of various species, may be used to modify the morphology of nanoparticles. In some cases, redox processes can be involved to control the morphology of nanoparticles. Technologically important nanomaterials such as titania, alumina, and iron oxides are studied.  相似文献

Materials with large and quick non‐linear optical response, excellent photo thermal stability, cost effectiveness and off resonant non‐linear absorption (NLA) are essential requirements for a good optical limiting (OL). Among them, organic systems and π‐conjugated polymers are getting special interest because of their flexibility in structural modification that leads to the tuning of optical and electronic properties that are suitable for working under large bandwidth. Here, we report a drastic enhancement of non‐linear optical activity and exceptional OL action of two organic–inorganic hybrid system based on BODIPY and Au and Ag nanoparticles (NPs). The organic system taken was certain set of BODIPYs with different substitution at the para and meta positions. All the compounds were found to be exhibiting good reverse saturable absorption (RSA) behaviour and negative non‐linear refraction property. An attempt was made to improve the non‐linear optical (NLO) property of the BODIPY by forming nanohybrids with Au and Ag NPs, and the best NLO active candidate among the studied system was chosen for it. A significant enhancement in NLO property was observed on hybrid system formation. The optical limiting (OL) threshold of the hybrid (1 J/cm2) was reduced almost 1/5 times than that of the parent compound (5.2 J/cm2), and this value is comparable with the benchmark OL materials like C60. The mechanism behind the NLA is found to be the combination of excited state absorption (ESA) and two‐photon absorption (TPA). The enhanced NLA and OL action of C? Ag/Au nanohybrids are attributed to the synergetic effect among the two parent components as well as the local field effects of NPs. Enhancement in non‐linear optical property is found to be stronger in hybrid system with Au NPs and is due to the resonant charge transfer and intense local field effect on exciting with 532‐nm pulse compared with that of Ag NPs. Both the parent compounds and the nanohybrids exhibit negative non‐linearity, and the non‐linear refraction is also found to be enhanced. The improved NLA and OL property of hybrid system guarantees successful usage of the strategy in OL applications.  相似文献

We have investigated six nanomaterials for their applicability as surfaces for the analyses of peptides and proteins using surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS). Gold nanoparticles (NPs) were useful nanomateriais for small analytes (e.g., glutathione); Pt nanosponges and Fe3O4 NPs were efficient nanomaterials for proteins, with an upper detectable mass limit of ca. 25 kDa. Nanomateriais have several advantages over organic matrices, including lower limits of detection for small analytes and lower batch-to-batch variations (fewer problems associated with “sweet spois”), when used in laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry.  相似文献

A facile and low cost method for the synthesis of self‐assembled nanoparticles (NPs) with minimal size variation and chemical waste by using reactive inkjet printing was developed. Gold NPs with diameters as small as (8±2) nm can be made at low temperature (120 °C). The size of the resulting NPs can be readily controlled through the concentration of the gold precursor and oleylamine ink. The pure gold composition of the synthesized NPs was confirmed by energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDXS) analysis. High‐resolution SEM (HRSEM) and TEM (HRTEM), and X‐ray diffraction revealed their size and face‐centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure, respectively. Owing to the high density of the NP film, UV/Vis spectroscopy showed a red shift in the intrinsic plasmonic resonance peak. We envision the extension of this approach to the synthesis of other nanomaterials and the production of tailored functional nanomaterials and devices.  相似文献
