Linear isocyanate‐terminated poly(urethane‐imide) (PUI) with combination of the advantages of polyurethane and polyimide was directly synthesized by the reaction between polyurethane prepolymer and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). Then octaaminophenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OapPOSS) and PUI were incorporated into the epoxy resin (EP) to prepare a series of EP/PUI/POSS organic–inorganic nanocomposites for the purpose of simultaneously improving the heat resistance and toughness of the epoxy resin. Their thermal degradation behavior, dynamic mechanical properties, and morphology were studied with thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results showed that the thermal stability and mechanical modulus was greatly improved with the addition of PUI and POSS. Moreover, the EP/PUI/POSS nanocomposites had lower glass transition temperatures. The TEM results revealed that POSS molecules could self assemble into strip domain which could switch to uniform dispersion with increasing the content of POSS. All the results could be ascribed to synergistic effect of PUI and POSS on the epoxy resin matrix. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A novel phosphorus‐containing compound diphenyl‐(1, 2‐dicarboxylethyl)‐phosphine oxide defined as DPDCEPO was synthesized and used as a flame retardant curing agent for epoxy resins (EP). The chemical structure of the prepared DPDCEPO was well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and 1H, 13C and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance. The DPDCEPO was mixed with curing agent of phthalic anhydride (PA) with various weight ratios into epoxy resins to prepare flame retardant EP thermosets. The flame retardant properties, combustion behavior and thermal analysis of the EP thermosets were respectively investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning tests (UL‐94), cone calorimeter measurement, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests. The surface morphologies and chemical compositions of the char residues for EP thermosets were respectively investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The water resistant properties of the cured EP were evaluated by putting the samples into distilled water at 70°C for 168 hr. The results revealed that the EP/20 wt% DPDCEPO/80 wt% PA thermosets successfully passed UL‐94 V‐0 flammability rating and the LOI value was as high as 33.2%. The cone test results revealed that the incorporation of DPDCEPO effectively reduced the combustion parameters of the epoxy resin thermosets, such as heat release rate and total heat release. The dynamic mechanical thermal analysis test demonstrated that the glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased with the increase of DPDCEPO content. The TGA results indicated that the incorporation of DPDCEPO promoted the decomposition of epoxy resin matrix ahead of time and led to a higher char yield and thermal stability at high temperatures. The surface morphological structures and analysis of the XPS of the char residues of EP thermosets revealed that the introduction of DPDCEPO benefited the formation of a sufficient, compact and homogeneous char layer with rich flame retardant elements on the epoxy resin material surface during combustion. The mechanical properties and water resistance of the cured epoxy resins were also measured. After water resistance tests, the EP/20 wt% DPDCEPO/80 wt% PA thermosets retained excellent flame retardancy, and the moisture adsorption of the EP thermosets decreased with the increase of DPDCEPO content in EP thermosets because of the existence of the P–C bonds and the rigid aromatic hydrophobic structure in DPDCEPO. A wrapped nanoflame retardant, designated as polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)‐poly(4‐bromostyrene) (PBS)‐carbon nanotubes (CNTs), was synthesized via π‐π stacking interactions between the walls of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and the silicon‐bromine containing hybrid copolymer (designated as POSS‐PBS) that was copolymerized by 4‐bromostyrene and acryloyloxyisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane. The POSS‐PBS‐CNTs exhibited good dispersibility in epoxy resin (EP) without obvious aggregation. Furthermore, the fire behaviors of this flame‐retardant EP (FR‐EP) nanocomposites were examined via limited oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter (CONE) tests. The FR‐EP had an ideal LOI value of 35.3% and its residual char yield obtained from CONE test was significantly enhanced from 5.9% to 15.3% with the incorporation of 4 wt% POSS‐PBS‐CNTs and 1.33 wt% Sb2O3 into EP matrix. Additionally, the addition of 4 wt% POSS‐PBS‐CNTs or POSS‐PBS can efficiently decrease the peak heat release rate (PHRR) of EP matrix by 41.0% or 45.6%, respectively.  相似文献

A series of intumescent flame-retardant epoxy resins (IFR-EPs) were prepared only by adding a 5 wt% total loading of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and metal compounds. All the samples could achieve V-0 rating and did not generate dripping during UL-94 testing. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of the samples with 4.83 wt% APP and 0.17 wt% CoSA increase from 27.1 to 29.4, compared with epoxy resin containing 5 wt% APP. The samples also showed excellent water resistance of flame retardancy in 30 °C and 70 °C water for 168 h. The LOI results show that the composition of metal compounds (metal ions and ligands/anions) and the mass ratios of APP to metal compounds affect the flame retardancy of the samples. TG results indicate that the catalytic effect of CoSA on the decomposition of both APP and the epoxy resins containing APP is better than that of CuSAO. The fire behavior of epoxy resin and epoxy resins containing APP with/without CoSA were investigated by cone calorimeter. Cone calorimeter parameters of the samples such as HRR, THR, TSP and COP indicate that the addition of APP and CoSA improves the fire safety of epoxy resin significantly, and CoSA shows an obvious catalytic effect.  相似文献

The use of monofunctional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as polymer modifiers requires controlling the phase separation process producing POSS-rich and polymer-rich domains that occurs in most systems due to the thermodynamic incompatibility between both components. One significant result of this study is the finding that isobornyl methacrylate (IBoMA) is an excellent reactive solvent of a commercial methacryl-heptaisobutyl POSS (MA-POSS). Formulations containing up to 30 wt% MA-POSS in IBoMA or in IBoMA (95 parts by weight)-diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA, 5 parts by weight), were polymerized using benzoyl peroxide as initiator up to complete conversion of CC bonds (determined by FTIR). Transparent POSS-modified materials were obtained without any evidence of a macroscopic phase separation. POSS addition produced a decrease of the glass transition temperature and the glassy and rubbery elastic modulus. A significant decrease in surface energy for both linear and cross-linked polymers was observed. This effect was particularly important for cross-linked polymers where the addition of 30 wt% POSS decreased the surface energy from about 29 mN m−1 to 16 mN m−1, a very low value for hydrocarbon materials. This study opens a way to obtain hydrophobic methacrylic coatings without the use of fluorinated monomers.  相似文献

Modified castor oil-based epoxy resin (EP)/polyurethane (PU) grafted copolymer by glycidyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (glycidyl POSS) was synthesized. The damping properties, thermal stability, mechanical properties and morphology of the grafted copolymer modified by glycidyl POSS were studied systematically. The results revealed that the incorporation of glycidyl POSS improved the damping performance evidently and broadened damping temperature range, especially when the glycidyl POSS content was0.2%–1%. At the same time, there was a slight increase in thermal stability with the increase of POSS content. The tensile properties changed with the change of the copolymer's Tg, decreased at low POSS contents and increased at high POSS contents. This modified copolymer has the potential to be used as film damping material or constrained damping layer.  相似文献

Incorporating elastic polysiloxane and/or an inorganic silica network in epoxy resin could result in the enhancement of physico-chemical properties due to the existence of Si-O bonds. To improve the compatibility between polysiloxane and epoxy matrices and intensively strengthen the properties of the modified system, here polysiloxane was introduced into epoxy resin through compatibilizing epoxy-immiscible polysiloxane with epoxy-miscible polycaprolactone segments via a sol-gel process. To fulfill the process, a blend containing alkoxysilane-functionalized polycaprolactone/polydimethylsiloxane (PCS-2Si) was firstly synthesized using direct nucleophilic addition between -OH groups of polydiol and -NCO of a silane. And then a series of modified epoxy resins were prepared in different epoxy/PCS-2Si weight ratios. All the modified composites were characterized by conventional methods, and their morphological, thermal degradation and surface properties were studied. The results showed that increasing the PCS-2Si content caused the changes of miscibility between epoxy and polysiloxane. Also, the thermal stability of the modified composites was greatly improved. As for the temperature value at 5% weight loss, it reached to 308.5 °C for the composite containing 50-60% (wt%) PCS-2Si, over 150 °C higher than that for neat amine-cured epoxy resin. Similarly, the modified composites showed good hydrophobicity. The improvement of these properties came from the improved interaction between PCS-2Si and epoxy, the forming of Si-O-Si network and the enrichment of siloxane chains on the surface of films. Therefore, it is believed that this modified epoxy appears promising as new high performance and highly functional materials.  相似文献

A kind of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) containing the propoxyl‐epoxy and phenyl groups (pr‐ep‐Ph‐POSS) was synthesized via hydrolytic condensation reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry identified the structure of the pr‐ep‐Ph‐POSS, including major caged Si6O9 (T6), Si10O15 (T10), Si12O18 (T12), etc. The pr‐ep‐Ph‐POSS was applied into the epoxy resin to achieve EP/pr‐ep‐Ph‐POSS composites. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that EP/pr‐ep‐Ph‐POSS showed excellent thermal properties than pure EP. The fire behaviors of EP/pr‐ep‐Ph‐POSS composites were evaluated based on the cone calorimetry, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 vertical burning test, and smoke density test. The smoke density decreased by ~30%, the LOI value reached to 26.4%, dripping was inhibited, and the peak of heat release rate decreased by ~62%. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and FTIR indicated that protective‐barrier effect is the main flame‐retardant mode of action for pr‐ep‐Ph‐POSS, due to the formation of the Si‐O‐Si, Si‐O‐C, and Si‐C condensed phase, which improve the thermal stability, strength, and integrity of the char layer.  相似文献

Epoxy based polymer nano-composite was prepared by dispersing graphite nano-platelets (GNPs) using two different techniques: three-roll mill (3RM) and sonication combined with high speed shear mixing (Soni_hsm). The influence of addition of GNPs on the electrical and thermal conductivity, fracture toughness and storage modulus of the nano-composite was investigated. The GNP/epoxy prepared by 3RM technique showed a maximum electrical conductivity of 1.8 × 10−03 S/m for 1.0 wt% which is 3 orders of magnitude higher than those prepared by Soni_hsm. The percentage of increase in thermal conductivity was only 11% for 1.0 wt% and 14% for 2.0 wt% filler loading. Dynamic mechanical analysis results showed 16% increase in storage modulus for 0.5 wt%, although the Tg did not show any significant increase. Single edge notch bending (SENB) fracture toughens (KIC) measurements were carried out for different weight percentage of the filler content. The toughening effect of GNP was most significant at 1.0 wt% loading, where a 43% increase in KIC was observed. Among the two different dispersion techniques, 3RM process gives the optimum dispersion where both electrical and mechanical properties are better.  相似文献

The influence of microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MFAPP) on flame retardancy, thermal properties and water resistance of epoxy (EP) composite were investigated by LOI, UL-94, DSC, TG, microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) and TG-FTIR. The results of DSC show that the shell outside MFAPP can increase its compatibility in EP. EP/MFAPP containing only 9 wt% MFAPP can pass V-0 in the UL-94 test, while neat EP cannot pass any rating. Due to the presence of shell, water treatment show few effects on the flame retardancy of EP/MFAPP, while LIO values of EP/APP decrease remarkably after treatment. The presence of MFAPP can reduce the heat release rate and total heat release of EP significantly in MCC test. The reason is that MFAPP can stimulate the dehydration of EP at low temperature and retard the release of pyrolysis gas at high temperature. Moreover, a char formed via the reaction of EP and MFAPP has excellent thermal stability and can prevent underlying materials from further combustion during a fire.  相似文献

Two types of novel Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes respectively containing hydroxyl group and epoxy group (P-POSS and E-POSS) were achieved and evaluated. The structure had been characterized by IR spectra and NMR spectra. Dicyclopentadiene bisphenol dicyanate ester (DCPDCE) composites were then prepared using P-POSS and E-POSS respectively. Their effect on the curing kinetics, dielectric, mechanical, flame-retardant and thermal properties and water absorption of the resulting composites were investigated. The results suggested that the addition of modified POSS could facilitate the curing reaction of DCPDCE. Besides, the DCPDCE composites containing modified POSS exhibited excellent flame-retardant property over pure DCPDCE resin. Adding only a little amount as small as 1.5 wt% P-POSS or 2.5 wt% E-POSS could change the UL-94V of DCPDCE resin from V-2 to V-0. The composite with P-POSS exhibited better flame-retardant and thermal properties than the composite with E-POSS. However, composite filled with E-POSS presented better dielectric property and lower water absorption.  相似文献

Metal functionalized POSS as fire retardants in polypropylene   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper deals with the study of the combustion properties of dimeric and oligomeric Al-and Zn-isobutyl silsesquioxane (POSS)/polypropylene (PP) composites, in comparison with neat PP and PP/octaisobutyl POSS.The presence of Al-POSS leads to a decrease in combustion rate with respect to PP, resulting in a decrease of Heat Release Rate (−43% at 10 wt% POSS loading) as well as reduction in CO and CO2 production rates, whereas a negative effect on the above parameters is obtained with octaisobutyl POSS. Zn-POSS does not significantly affect the PP combustion behaviour. The effect of Al-POSS is most likely related to its chemical activity, which favours the formation of a moderate amount of char residue, by catalysing secondary reactions in the polymer during combustion.  相似文献

This paper presents the influence of Aluminum Nitride (AlN) nanoparticles on the electrical and material properties of epoxy resin (EP). The EP/AlN nanocomposites with different concentrations of nano-AlN fillers are prepared. The dispersion of the nano-AlN particles in the composites is analyzed by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The electrical properties are investigated by the space charge and DC conductivity measurements, whereas the material properties are studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The results show that the homo-charge accumulation appears near both electrodes during the polarization, but there are limited negative charges left near both electrodes in the depolarization for the pure EP sample. There is no space charge accumulation in the 1 wt% and 2 wt% EP/AlN nanocomposites. The electric field distortion of the pure EP sample is 20%. Moreover, the electric field distortion initially decreases with the increase of the nano-AlN content, but it increases for the 2 wt% nano-AlN sample. Temperature has a dominant influence on the DC conductivity of the EP/AlN nanocomposites comparing to the pure EP. However, the DC conductivity of the nanocomposites becomes stable at high temperatures. It is also found that the weight loss of the samples decreases with the addition of the nano-AlN and the 1 wt% nano-AlN sample has the highest glass transition temperature. It is elucidated that the high apparent mobility and activation energy facilitate the space charge transport and suppressing the space charge accumulation. Furthermore, the nano-AlN filler can increase the trap level and trap energy density of the deep traps in the sample. The dielectric loss of the EP at high frequency is reduced with the content of 1 wt% nano-AlN. Furthermore, the addition of the nano-AlN can improve the thermal stability of the EP. The 1 wt% nano-AlN sample has the superior electrical insulation and material performance amongst the tested materials.  相似文献

Grafting nanoscale reinforcement onto macrolevel carbon fiber (CF) surface is an efficient approach to improve interfacial strength and properties of composites. In the research, 2 different polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)/CF hybrids have been prepared by a facile 2‐step method. Carbon fiber was grafted with aniline groups by aryl diazonium reaction using water as the reaction medium, and then separately functionalized with glycidyllsobutyl POSS (EP0418) or glycidyl POSS (EP0409) by the chemical bonding. Characterization of fiber surface structures before and after modification confirmed the covalent bonding nature between both kinds of POSS and CF. Atomic force microscopy images showed the uniform distributions of EP0418 or EP0409 modified on the fiber surface and the similar enhanced degree of surface roughness (89.3 and 88.7 nm). Dynamic contact angle tests showed that EP0409‐grafted CF (CF‐g‐EP0409) had lower contact angles and higher surface free energy than those of EP0418‐grafted CF (CF‐g‐EP0418). Interfacial strength and hydrothermal aging resistance of composites enhanced significantly after POSS modification, especially for CF‐g‐EP0409 composites. Interfacial reinforcing mechanisms of composites reinforced with 2 different POSS/CF hybrids have also been analyzed and compared.  相似文献

Phosphorus/nitrogen‐containing advanced epoxy resins were obtained by chain‐extension of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A epoxy (DGEBA) resin with phosphorus‐modified triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGICP). The structure of TGICP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the EP/TGICP composites possessed higher glass transition temperatures than that of phosphorus free EP. The thermal stability and flame retardant properties of the epoxy resin/TGICP systems were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and vertical burning test (UL‐94) test. When the TGICP content was 10 wt%, the LOI value of epoxy resin system was as high as 35.0% and it can obtain the V‐0 grade in UL‐94 protocol. From microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) measurement, it was found that the addition of TGICP reduced the value of peak heat release rate and total heat release. The thermal degradation process of EP and EP/TGICP composite was monitored by real time FTIR. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to explore the morphology and chemical components of the char residues. The characteristics of epoxy/(Ba0.8Sr0.2)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 (BSTZ) composites are investigated for the further application in embedded capacitor device. The effects of BSTZ ceramic powder filler ratio on the chemical, physical and dielectric properties of epoxy/BSTZ composites are studied. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) thermal analysis is conducted to determine the optimum values of hardener agent, curing temperature, reaction heat, and glass transition temperature (Tg). The hardener reaction process starts at about 115 °C and completes at about 200 °C, for that it is appropriate to process of epoxy/BSTZ composites in the range of temperature. The highest glass transition temperature (Tg) of 155 °C is obtained at one equivalent weight ratio (hardener/epoxy). Only the BSTZ phase can be detected in the XRD patterns of epoxy/BSTZ composites. The more BSTZ ceramic powder is mixed with epoxy, the higher crystalline intensity of tetragonal BSTZ phase are revealed in the XRD patterns. The dielectric constant measured at 1 MHz increases from 5.8 to 23.6 as the content of BSTZ ceramic powder in the epoxy/BSTZ composites increases from 10 to 70 wt%. The loss tangents of the epoxy/BSTZ composites slightly increase with the increase of measurement frequency.  相似文献

A metal-doped organic and inorganic hybrid polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) with a titanium atom in the POSS cage and an ethanolamine substitute group in the corner, namely MEA-Ti-POSS, was synthesized through simple condensation reaction and substitute reaction. It was blended with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) to form a kind of blending-type flame retardant system for the modification of epoxy resins. The thermal stability, flame retardancy and mechanical properties of cured epoxy resin composites were studied. Comparing with pure epoxy resin, the LOI value of EP/MEA-Ti-POSS/DOPO composites was raised from 25.2% to 32.7%, and the UL-94 grade reached V-0 level at a loading of the mixture of 5% MEA-Ti-POSS and 5% DOPO. In addition, the cone calorimetry results showed that the heat release rate, total heat release and total smoke production as well as smoke production rate were all reduced during the combustion of EP/MEA-Ti-POSS/DOPO composites. The residual char analysis revealed that carbon residues of EP/MEA-Ti-POSS/DOPO composite served as a physical protective layer to insulate the oxygen and combustible gases to reduce the ablation of the matrix. It was concluded that the mixture of MEA-Ti-POSS and DOPO not only effectively raised the thermal stability and flame retardancy of epoxy composited materials, but also improved their mechanical properties, which expanded a promising application of the metal-POSS derivatives as non-halogen additives in the flame retardant polymers.  相似文献

To improve the surface and mechanical interfacial properties of epoxy resins, fluorine-containing epoxy resin (FEP) was prepared and blended with a commercially available tetrafunctional epoxy resin (TGDDM). As a result, when the fluorine content increased, the total surface energy of TGDDM/FEP blends was gradually decreased, while the water repellency of the blends was increased. The glass transition temperature and thermal stability factors of the blends showed maximum values at 20-40 wt% FEP compared with neat TGDDM epoxy resins. And the mechanical interfacial properties of the blend specimens were significantly increased with increasing the FEP content, which could be attributed to the intermacromolecular interactions in the cured TGDDM/FEP blends. These results indicate that the water repellency and toughness improvements have been achieved without significantly deterioration of the thermal properties in the TGDDM/FEP blends.  相似文献

The morphology, thermal degradation, and flame retardancy of epoxy (EP) composites containing microcrystalline cellulose whisker (MCW) and microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MFAPP) were investigated using optical microscopy, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94, thermogravimetry (TG), microscale combustion calorimeter, and TG-FTIR. EP/MFAPP/MCW composites can pass V-0 in UL-94 test at 6 wt% loading, and its peak heat release rate decreases when compared with EP and EP/MFAPP. The reason is that the presence of MCW strengthens the charring capacity of EP composites in a fire. The results of TG and TG-FTIR show that at low temperature, MFAPP stimulates the dehydration of MCW and EP, and produces gas which is helpful for the formation of an intumescent char. Moreover, the residue at high temperature does not release any flammable gas and is a good insulation layer on the surface of the sample, which protects the underlying material in a fire.  相似文献

A novel inorganic-organic hybrid material, belonging to the family of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), was used to reduce the trend of a conventional epoxy-amine system to undergo combustion. The mixtures with different percentages in weight of POSS, and equal number of equivalents between of epoxy and amino groups were tested by thermogravimetic analysis (TGA) in both, argon and oxygen atmospheres. The results indicated that the char/ceramic yield values increase with the content of POSS and therefore, fire resistance is enhanced. Activation energies of degradation processes were obtained by Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose method. An empirical kinetic model satisfactorily explained the degradation mechanism of different blends.  相似文献
