Crystalline Si(111) surfaces have been alkylated in a two-step chlorination/alkylation process using sterically bulky alkyl groups such as (CH3)2CH- (iso-propyl), (CH3)3C- (tert-butyl), and C6H5- (phenyl) moieties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) data in the C 1s region of such surfaces exhibited a low energy emission at 283.9 binding eV, consistent with carbon bonded to Si. The C 1s XPS data indicated that the alkyls were present at lower coverages than methyl groups on CH(3)-terminated Si(111) surfaces. Despite the lower alkyl group coverage, no Cl was detected after alkylation. Functionalization with the bulky alkyl groups effectively inhibited the oxidation of Si(111) surfaces in air and produced low (<100 cm s(-1)) surface recombination velocities. Transmission infrared spectroscopy indicated that the surfaces were partially H-terminated after the functionalization reaction. Application of a reducing potential, -2.5 V vs Ag+/Ag, to Cl-terminated Si(111) electrodes in tetrahydrofuran resulted in the complete elimination of Cl, as measured by XPS. The data are consistent with a mechanism in which the reaction of alkyl Grignard reagents with the Cl-terminated Si(111) surfaces involves electron transfer from the Grignard reagent to the Si, loss of chloride to solution, and subsequent reaction between the resultant silicon radical and alkyl radical to form a silicon-carbon bond. Sites sterically hindered by neighboring alkyl groups abstract a H atom to produce Si-H bonds on the surface.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and computational modeling have been used to study the structure of ethyl-terminated Si(111) surfaces. The ethyl-terminated surface was prepared by treating the H-terminated Si(111) surface with PCl5 to form a Cl-terminated Si(111) surface with subsequent exposure to C(2)H(5)MgCl in tetrahydrofuran to produce an alkylated Si(111) surface. The STM data at 77 K revealed local, close-packed, and relatively ordered regions with a nearest-neighbor spacing of 0.38 nm as well as disordered regions. The average spot density corresponded to approximately 85% of the density of Si atop sites on an unreconstructed Si(111) surface. Molecular dynamics simulations of a Si(111) surface randomly populated with ethyl groups to a total coverage of approximately 80% confirmed that the ethyl-terminated Si(111) surface, in theory, can assume reasonable packing arrangements to accommodate such a high surface coverage, which could be produced by an exoergic surface functionalization route such as the two-step chlorination/alkylation process. Hence, it is possible to consistently interpret the STM data within a model suggested by recent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data and infrared absorption data, which indicate that the two-step halogenation/alkylation method can provide a relatively high coverage of ethyl groups on Si(111) surfaces.  相似文献

High-resolution soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to investigate the oxidation of alkylated silicon(111) surfaces under ambient conditions. Silicon(111) surfaces were functionalized through a two-step route involving radical chlorination of the H-terminated surface followed by alkylation with alkylmagnesium halide reagents. After 24 h in air, surface species representing Si(+), Si(2+), Si(3+), and Si(4+) were detected on the Cl-terminated surface, with the highest oxidation state (Si(4+)) oxide signal appearing at +3.79 eV higher in energy than the bulk Si 2p(3/2) peak. The growth of silicon oxide was accompanied by a reduction in the surface-bound Cl signal. After 48 h of exposure to air, the Cl-terminated Si(111) surface exhibited 3.63 equivalent monoleyers (ML) of silicon oxides. In contrast, after exposure to air for 48 h, CH(3)-, C(2)H(5)-, or C(6)H(5)CH(2)-terminated Si surfaces displayed <0.4 ML of surface oxide, and in most cases only displayed approximately 0.20 ML of oxide. This oxide was principally composed of Si(+) and Si(3+) species with peaks centered at +0.8 and +3.2 eV above the bulk Si 2p(3/2) peak, respectively. The silicon 2p SXPS peaks that have previously been assigned to surface Si-C bonds did not change significantly, either in binding energy or in relative intensity, during such air exposure. Use of a high miscut-angle surface (7 degrees vs < or =0.5 degrees off of the (111) surface orientation) yielded no increase in the rate of oxidation nor change in binding energy of the resultant oxide that formed on the alkylated Si surfaces. Scanning Auger microscopy indicated that the alkylated surfaces formed oxide in isolated, inhomogeneous patches on the surface.  相似文献

Hydrogen-terminated, chlorine-terminated, and alkyl-terminated crystalline Si(111) surfaces have been characterized using high-resolution, soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy from a synchrotron radiation source. The H-terminated Si(111) surface displayed a Si 2p(3/2) peak at a binding energy 0.15 eV higher than the bulk Si 2p(3/2) peak. The integrated area of this shifted peak corresponded to one equivalent monolayer, consistent with the assignment of this peak to surficial Si-H moieties. Chlorinated Si surfaces prepared by exposure of H-terminated Si to PCl5 in chlorobenzene exhibited a Si 2p(3/2) peak at a binding energy of 0.83 eV above the bulk Si peak. This higher-binding-energy peak was assigned to Si-Cl species and had an integrated area corresponding to 0.99 of an equivalent monolayer on the Si(111) surface. Little dichloride and no trichloride Si 2p signals were detected on these surfaces. Silicon(111) surfaces alkylated with CnH(2n+1)- (n = 1 or 2) or C6H5CH2- groups were prepared by exposing the Cl-terminated Si surface to an alkylmagnesium halide reagent. Methyl-terminated Si(111) surfaces prepared in this fashion exhibited a Si 2p(3/2) signal at a binding energy of 0.34 eV above the bulk Si 2p(3/2) peak, with an area corresponding to 0.85 of a Si(111) monolayer. Ethyl- and C6H5CH2-terminated Si(111) surfaces showed no evidence of either residual Cl or oxidized Si and exhibited a Si 2p(3/2) peak approximately 0.20 eV higher in energy than the bulk Si 2p(3/2) peak. This feature had an integrated area of approximately 1 monolayer. This positively shifted Si 2p(3/2) peak is consistent with the presence of Si-C and Si-H surface functionalities on such surfaces. The SXPS data indicate that functionalization by the two-step chlorination/alkylation process proceeds cleanly to produce oxide-free Si surfaces terminated with the chosen alkyl group.  相似文献

The microscopic behaviors of a water layer on different hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces of well ordered self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The SAMs consist of 18-carbon alkyl chains bound to a silicon(111) substrate, and the characteristic of its surface is tuned from hydrophobic to hydrophilic by using different terminal functional groups ( CH 3 , COOH). In the simulation, the properties of water membranes adjacent to the surfaces of SAMs were reported by comparing pure water in mobility, structure, and orientational ordering of water molecules. The results suggest that the mobility of water molecules adjacent to hydrophilic surface becomes weaker and the molecules have a better ordering. The distribution of hydrogen bonds indicates that the number of water-water hydrogen bonds per water molecule tends to be lower. However, the mobility of water molecules and distribution of hydrogen bonds of a water membrane in hydropho- bic system are nearly the same as those in pure water system. In addition, hydrogen bonds are mainly formed between the hydroxyl of the COOH group and water molecules in a hydrophilic system, which is helpful in understanding the structure of interfacial water.  相似文献

Oxide-terminated and Cl-terminated GaAs(111)A surfaces have been characterized in the As and Ga 3d regions by high-resolution, soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Cl-terminated surface, formed by treatment with 6 M HCl(aq), showed no detectable As oxides or As(0) in the As 3d region. The Ga 3d spectrum of the Cl-terminated surface showed a broad, intense signal at 19.4 eV and a smaller signal at 21.7 eV. The Ga 3d peaks were fitted using three species, one representing bulk GaAs and the others representing two chemical species on the surface. The large peak was well-fitted by the bulk GaAs emission and by a second doublet, assigned to surface Ga atoms bonded to Cl, that was shifted by 0.34 eV from the bulk GaAs 3d emission. The smaller peak, shifted by 2.3 eV in binding energy relative to the bulk GaAs Ga 3d signal, is assigned to Ga(OH)3. The data confirm that wet chemical etching allows for the formation of well-defined, Cl-terminated GaAs(111)A surfaces free of detectable elemental As, that can provide a starting point for further functionalization of GaAs.  相似文献

(Me3Si)3SiH was used as a successful reagent in a variety of radical-based transformations in water. The system comprising substrate, silane, and initiator (ACCN) mixed in aqueous medium at 100 degrees C worked well for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates, with the only variation that an amphiphilic thiol was also needed in case of the water-soluble compounds.  相似文献

We investigated the water (D(2)O) adsorption at 135?K on a hydrogen pre-adsorbed Rh(111) surface using temperature programmed desorption and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) in ultrahigh vacuum. With increasing the hydrogen coverage, the desorption temperature of water decreases. At the saturation coverage of hydrogen, dewetting growth of water ice was observed: large three-dimensional ice grains are formed. The activation energy of water desorption from the hydrogen-saturated Rh(111) surface is estimated to be 51 kJ/mol. The initial sticking probability of water decreases from 0.46 on the clean surface to 0.35 on the hydrogen-saturated surface. In IRAS measurements, D-down species were not observed on the hydrogen saturated surface. The present experimental results clearly show that a hydrophilic Rh(111) clean surface changes into a hydrophobic surface as a result of hydrogen adsorption.  相似文献

Water vapor adsorption and heats of water wetting are studied for hydrophilic quartz, hydrophobic-hydrophilic talc, and hydrophobized Silochrom samples. Water contact angles on the materials under examination are found. The surface thermodynamic parameters of the sorbents are calculated from the data obtained. It is shown that boundary water layers on hydrophilic quartz surface are ordered to a higher extent, while those on hydrophobic basal surfaces of talc particles and hydrophobic surfaces of modified Silochrom samples are ordered to a lower extent relative to liquid water. An empirical equation relating the surface pressure of water films adsorbed on hydrophilic high-energy surfaces with the surface free energy of the latter is proposed. The values of surface free energy are estimated from this equation for a number of important hydrophilic adsorbents.  相似文献

Colloidal amphiphilic particles were prepared with hydrophilic polyacrylamide cores encapsulated by hydrophobic poly(butyl methacrylate) shells. The hydrophobic shell possessed a porous structure, which made the hydrophilic core accessible to the outside liquid. The amphiphilicity of the particles was characterized by their water and diesel oil absorbabilities. The effect of the polymerization conditions on the structure and thickness of the hydrophobic layer was investigated in some detail. Such amphiphilic particles can be dispersed in both water and hydrophobic liquids, and the dispersions have a long life in water and a more moderate one in oil.  相似文献

Crystalline gallium arsenide (GaAs) (111)A and gallium nitride (GaN) (0001) surfaces have been functionalized with alkyl groups via a sequential wet chemical chlorine activation, Grignard reaction process. For GaAs(111)A, etching in HCl in diethyl ether effected both oxide removal and surface-bound Cl. X-ray photoelectron (XP) spectra demonstrated selective surface chlorination after exposure to 2 M HCl in diethyl ether for freshly etched GaAs(111)A but not GaAs(111)B surfaces. GaN(0001) surfaces exposed to PCl(5) in chlorobenzene showed reproducible XP spectroscopic evidence for Cl-termination. The Cl-activated GaAs(111)A and GaN(0001) surfaces were both reactive toward alkyl Grignard reagents, with pronounced decreases in detectable Cl signal as measured by XP spectroscopy. Sessile contact angle measurements between water and GaAs(111)A interfaces after various levels of treatment showed that GaAs(111)A surfaces became significantly more hydrophobic following reaction with C(n)H(2n-1)MgCl (n = 1, 2, 4, 8, 14, 18). High-resolution As 3d XP spectra taken at various times during prolonged direct exposure to ambient lab air indicated that the resistance of GaAs(111)A to surface oxidation was greatly enhanced after reaction with Grignard reagents. GaAs(111)A surfaces terminated with C(18)H(37) groups were also used in Schottky heterojunctions with Hg. These heterojunctions exhibited better stability over repeated cycling than heterojunctions based on GaAs(111)A modified with C(18)H(37)S groups. Raman spectra were separately collected that suggested electronic passivation by surficial Ga-C bonds at GaAs(111)A. Specifically, GaAs(111)A surfaces reacted with alkyl Grignard reagents exhibited Raman signatures comparable to those of samples treated with 10% Na(2)S in tert-butanol. For GaN(0001), high-resolution C 1s spectra exhibited the characteristic low binding energy shoulder demonstrative of surface Ga-C bonds following reaction with CH(3)MgCl. In addition, 4-fluorophenyl groups were attached and detected after reaction with C(6)H(4)FMgBr, further confirming the susceptibility of Cl-terminated GaN(0001) to surface alkylation. However, the measured hydrophobicities of alkyl-terminated GaAs(111)A and GaN(0001) were markedly distinct, indicating differences in the resultant surface layers. The results presented here, in conjunction with previous studies on GaP, show that atop Ga atoms at these crystallographically related surfaces can be deliberately functionalized and protected through Ga-C surface bonds that do not involve thiol/sulfide chemistry or gas-phase pretreatments.  相似文献

Structural and dynamic properties of water confined between two parallel, extended, either hydrophobic or hydrophilic crystalline surfaces of n-alkane C(36)H(74) or n-alcohol C(35)H(71)OH, are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Electron density profiles, directly compared with corresponding experimental data from x-ray reflectivity measurements, reveal a uniform weak de-wetting characteristic for the extended hydrophobic surface, while the hydrophilic surface is weakly wetted. These microscopic data are consistent with macroscopic contact angle measurements. Specific water orientation is present at both surfaces. The ordering is characteristically different between the surfaces and of longer range at the hydrophilic surface. Furthermore, the dynamic properties of water are different at the two surfaces and different from the bulk behavior. In particular, at the hydrophobic surface, time-correlation functions reveal that water molecules have characteristic diffusive behavior and orientational ordering due to the lack of hydrogen bonding interactions with the surface. These observations suggest that the altered dynamical properties of water in contact with extended hydrophobic surfaces together with a partial drying of the surfaces are more indicative of the hydrophobic effect than structural ordering, which we suggest to be independent of surface topology.  相似文献

Adhesive and frictional forces between surfaces modified with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and immersed in solvents were measured with chemical force microscopy as functions of surface functionality and solvent. Si/SiO2 substrates were modified with SAMs of alkylsiloxanes (SiCl3(CH2)n-X), and gold-coated AFM tips were modified with SAMs of alkylthiolates (HS-(CH2)n-X). SAMs of alkylsiloxanes terminated in a methyl or oxidized vinyl group; SAMs of alkanethiolates terminated in a methyl or carboxyl group. Adhesive and frictional forces were measured in hexadecane, ethanol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, and water. The work of adhesion (W) was calculated with the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts theory of adhesive contact. The JKR values agreed well with values derived from the Fowkes-van Oss-Chaudhury-Good surface tension model and from contact angle results. Calculated values of W for all combinations of contacting surfaces and solvents spanned two orders of magnitude. W correlated with the surface tension of the solvent for hydrophobic/hydrophobic interactions; hydrophilic/hydrophilic and hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions were more complex. Friction forces were fit to a modified form of Amonton's law. For any solvent, friction coefficients were largest for the hydrophilic/hydrophilic contacting surfaces. The friction coefficient for any contacting pair was largest in hexadecane. In polar solvents, friction coefficients scaled with solvent polarity only for hydrophobic/hydrophobic contacting pairs. This study addresses problems encountered with an emulsion/membrane bioreactor. In this reactor, enzyme- (lipase) catalyzed hydrolysis in an emulsion was combined with two in-line separation steps. One is carried out with a hydrophilic membrane, to separate the water phase, the other with a hydrophobic membrane, to separate the oil phase. In the absence of enzyme, sunflower oil/water emulsions with an oil fraction between 0.3 and 0.7 could be separated with both membranes operating simultaneously. However, two problems arose with emulsions containing lipase. First, the flux through both the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic membranes decreased with exposure to the enzyme. Second, the hydrophobic membrane showed a loss of selectivity demonstrated by permeation of both the oil phase and the water phase through the hydrophobic membrane at low transmembrane pressure. These phenomena can be explained by protein (i.e. lipase) adsorption to the polymer surface within the pores of the membrane. It was proven that lipase was present at the hydrophilic membrane and that this, in part, explains the flux decrease of the hydrophilic membrane. To prevent the observed loss of selectivity with exposure to protein, the hydrophobic polypropylene membrane (Enka) was modified with block copolymers of propylene oxide (PO) and ethylene oxide (EO). These block copolymers act as a steric hindrance for proteins that come near the surface. The modification was successful: After 10 days of continuous operation the minimum transmembrane pressure at which water could permeate through an F 108-modified membrane was 0.5 bar, the same value as that observed in the beginning of the experiment. This indicates that loss of selectivity due to protein adsorption is prevented by the modification of the membrane.  相似文献

An ionic crystal of Cs2[Cr3O(OOCC2H5)6(H2O)3]2[alpha-SiW12O40].4H2O 1a with hydrophilic and hydrophobic channels has been designed and successfully synthesized. The guest-free phase 1b sorbs dichloromethane and water in the hydrophobic and hydrophilic channels, respectively. The rate and equilibrium amount of the dichloromethane sorption into the hydrophobic channel and those of water into the hydrophilic channel were independent of each other. The sorption properties can be applied to the channel-selective sorption and collection of hydrophobic (dichloromethane) and hydrophilic (water) molecules from the mixture.  相似文献

Hybrid brushes composed of two liquid polymers, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and a highly branched ethoxylated polyethylenimine (EPEI), were synthesized on Si wafers by the "grafting to" method and by applying a combinatorial approach (fabrication of gradient brushes). The combinatorial approach revealed a strong effect of "layer assisted tethering", which allowed us to synthesize hybrid brushes twice as thick as the reference homopolymer brushes. The hybrid brushes are stable thin films that can rapidly and reversibly switch between hydrophilic and hydrophobic states in water and air, respectively. The switching in water affects a rapid release of amino functional groups which can be used to regulate adhesion and reactivity of the material. The switching in air rapidly returns the brush to a hydrophobic state. The hybrid brush is hydrophilic because of two mechanisms: (1) exposure of EPEI chains to the brush-water interface under water, and (2) retention of some fraction of water via swollen EPEI chains (the EPEI chains swell by 2-3 times), which are conserved by a PDMS cap in air. The hybrid brush is wettable under water, and at the same time, the brush is nonwettable in air because water droplets are trapped in a metastable state when the water contact angle is above 90 degrees .  相似文献

Vibrational spectroscopy, sum frequency generation, has been used to study the gas-liquid interface of imidazolium-based, room-temperature ionic liquids. The ionic liquids are divided into two categories on the basis of their miscibility with water, as hydrophobic (immiscible) and hydrophilic (miscible). The spectroscopy results indicate that water will reorient the cations of the hydrophobic ionic liquid, while in the hydrophilic ones they remain unaffected. Thus, under low water conditions the plane of the imidazolium ring remains parallel to the surface for both types of ionic liquid. However, at high water content the ring will reorient to along the surface normal for the hydrophobic ionic liquid but remain parallel to the surface for the hydrophilic one. This is a reversible process.  相似文献

Generating droplets via microfluidic chips is a promising technology in microanalysis and microsynthesis. To realize room-temperature ionic liquid (IL)-water two-phase studies in microscale, a water-immiscible IL was employed as the continuous phase for the first time to wrap water droplets (either plugs or spheres) on flow-focusing microfluidic chips. The IL, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]), could wet both hydrophilic and hydrophobic channel surfaces because of its dual role of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and extremely high viscosity, thus offering the possibility of wrapping water droplets in totally hydrophilic (THI), moderately hydrophilic (MHI), and hydrophobic (HO) channels. The droplet shape could be tuned from plug to sphere, with the volume from 6.3 nL to 65 pL, by adding an orifice in the focusing region, rendering the hydrophilic channel surface hydrophobic, and suppressing the Uw/UIL ratio below 1.0. Three different breakup processes were defined and clarified, in which the sub-steady breakup and steady breakup were essential for the formation of plugs and spheric droplets, respectively. The influences of channel hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity on droplet formation were carefully studied by evaluating the wetting abilities of water and IL on different surfaces. The superiority of IL over water in wetting hydrophobic surface led to the tendency of forming small, spheric aqueous droplets in the hydrophobic channel. This IL-favored droplet-based system represented a high efficiency in water/IL extraction, in which rhodamine 6G was extracted from aqueous droplets to [BMIM][PF6] in the hydrophobic orifice-included (HO-OI) channel in 0.51 s.  相似文献

The adsorption of a surfactant, sodium di-2-ethylhexyl sulfosuccinate (SDES), [C4H9CH(C2H5)CH2OCO][C4H9CH(C2H5)CH2OCOCH2]CHSO3- Na+, in an aqueous solution on an atomically flat H-terminated Si(111) [abbreviated as H-Si(111)] surface with a hydrophobic property was investigated by in-situ FTIR measurements. Immersion of the H-Si(111) surface in a solution of 1.0 x 10(-2) M SDES for more than 2 h led to formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with the alkyl chains having a tendency to be assembled perpendicular to the Si surface. The in-situ FTIR observation revealed that the adsorption was nearly complete about 60 min after the start of the immersion, and after that the adsorbed molecules changed their arrangement into an ordered mode. The Si-H peak in the FTIR spectrum remained unchanged with time in aqueous surfactant solution, in contrast to the case of immersion in pure water, indicating that the adsorbed surfactant protects the H-Si(111) surface from oxidation. No structural change in the SAM was observed when a negative potential of -700 mV vs Ag/AgCl was applied to the Si, whereas the adsorbed molecules changed their arrangement, accompanied by their substantial desorption and oxidation of the Si surface, when a positive potential of +700 mV was applied.  相似文献
