A finite sequence of nonnegative integers is called graphic if the terms in the sequence can be realized as the degrees of vertices of a finite simple graph. We present two new characterizations of graphic sequences. The first of these is similar to a result of Havel-Hakimi, and the second equivalent to a result of Erd?s & Gallai, thus providing a short proof of the latter result. We also show how some known results concerning degree sets and degree sequences follow from our results.  相似文献

We consider a problem related to Hadwiger's Conjecture. Let D=(d1, d2, …, dn) be a graphic sequence with 0?d1?d2?···?dn?n?1. Any simple graph G with D its degree sequence is called a realization of D. Let R[D] denote the set of all realizations of D. Define h(D)=max{h(G): GR[D]} and χ(D)=max{χ(G): GR[D]}, where h(G) and χ(G) are Hadwiger number and chromatic number of a graph G, respectively. Hadwiger's Conjecture implies that h(D)?χ(D). Murty [A generalization of the Hoffman-Singleton graph, Ars Combin. 7 (1979) 191-193.] constructed a family of (pm+2)-regular graphs of girth five and order 2p2m, where p?5 is a prime, which includes the Hoffman-Singleton graph [A.J. Hoffman, R.R. Singleton, On Moore graphs with diameters 2 and 3, IBM J. (1960) 497-504]. This construction gives an upper bound for the least number f(k) of vertices of a k-regular graph with girth 5. In this paper, we extend the Murty construction to k-regular graphs with girth 5, for each k. In particular, we obtain new upper bounds for f(k), k?16.  相似文献

Hungar. 9 (1978) 145-161] studied the asymptotic behaviour of for certain graphs G,H. In this paper there will be given a lower bound for the diagonal size Ramsey number of Kn,n,n. The result is a generalization of a theorem for Kn,n given by P. Erdös and C.C. Rousseau [P. Erdös, C.C. It was conjectured by Mkrtchyan, Petrosyan and Vardanyan that every graph G with Δ(G)?δ(G)1 has a maximum matching M such that any two M-unsaturated vertices do not share a neighbor. The results obtained in Mkrtchyan et al. (2010), Petrosyan (2014) and Picouleau (2010) leave the conjecture unknown only for k-regular graphs with 4k6. All counterexamples for k-regular graphs (k7) given in Petrosyan (2014) have multiple edges. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture for all k-regular simple graphs and also k-regular multigraphs with k4.  相似文献

The idea of almost convergence for double sequences was introduced by Moricz and Rhoades [Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 104 (1988) 283-294] and they also characterized the four dimensional strong regular matrices. The decycling number ?(G) of a graph G is the smallest number of vertices which can be removed from G so that the resultant graph contains no cycle. A decycling set containing exactly ?(G) vertices of G is called a ?-set. For any decycling set S of a k-regular graph G, we show that |S|=β(G)+m(S)k?1, where β(G) is the cycle rank of G, m(S)=c+|E(S)|?1 is the margin number of S, c and |E(S)| are, respectively, the number of components of G?S and the number of edges in G[S]. In particular, for any ?-set S of a 3-regular graph G, we prove that m(S)=ξ(G), where ξ(G) is the Betti deficiency of G. This implies that the decycling number of a 3-regular graph G is β(G)+ξ(G)2. Hence ?(G)=?β(G)2? for a 3-regular upper-embeddable graph G, which concludes the results in [Gao et al., 2015, Wei and Li, 2013] and solves two open problems posed by Bau and Beineke (2002). Considering an algorithm by Furst et al., (1988), there exists a polynomial time algorithm to compute Z(G), the cardinality of a maximum nonseparating independent set in a 3-regular graph G, which solves an open problem raised by Speckenmeyer (1988). As for a 4-regular graph G, we show that for any ?-set S of G, there exists a spanning tree T of G such that the elements of S are simply the leaves of T with at most two exceptions providing ?(G)=?β(G)3?. On the other hand, if G is a loopless graph on n vertices with maximum degree at most 4, then
?(G)n+12,if G is 4-regular,n2,otherwise.
The above two upper bounds are tight, and this makes an extension of a result due to Punnim (2006).  相似文献

Huber (1956) [8] considered the following problem on the hyperbolic plane H. Consider a strictly hyperbolic subgroup of automorphisms on H with compact quotient, and choose a conjugacy class in this group. Count the number of vertices inside an increasing ball, which are images of a fixed point xH under automorphisms in the chosen conjugacy class, and describe the asymptotic behaviour of this number as the size of the ball goes to infinity. We use a well-known analogy between the hyperbolic plane and the regular tree to solve this problem on the regular tree.  相似文献

In this paper, we show that if the second largest eigenvalue of a d-regular graph is less than , then the graph is k-edge-connected. When k is 2 or 3, we prove stronger results. Let ρ(d) denote the largest root of x3-(d-3)x2-(3d-2)x-2=0. We show that if the second largest eigenvalue of a d-regular graph G is less than ρ(d), then G is 2-edge-connected and we prove that if the second largest eigenvalue of G is less than , then G is 3-edge-connected.  相似文献

Let G be a regular graph of order n and degree δ. The independent domination numberi(G) is defined to be the minimum cardinality among all maximal independent sets of vertices of G. Even though a very large number of solution methods has been developed for the job-shop scheduling problem, a majority has been designed for the makespan criterion. In this paper, we propose a general approach for optimizing any regular criterion in the job-shop scheduling problem. The approach is a local search method that uses a disjunctive graph model and neighborhoods generated by swapping critical arcs. The connectivity property of the neighborhood structure is proved and a novel efficient method for evaluating moves is presented. Besides its generality, another prominent advantage of the proposed approach is its simple implementation that only requires to tune the range of one parameter. Extensive computational experiments carried out on various criteria (makespan, total weighted flow time, total weighted tardiness, weighted sum of tardy jobs, maximum tardiness) show the efficiency of the proposed approach. Best results were obtained for some problem instances taken from the literature.  相似文献
