In this paper we investigate the existence and uniqueness for an optimal control problem with processes described by a quasilinear parabolic equation with controls in coefficients and the right side of this equation.     

Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem for the Weyl functional calculus

Let {X _j , Y _j , T : 1 ≤ j ≤ n} be a basis satisfying the commutation relation for the Heisenberg Lie algebra . Then we obtain a multi-parameter Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem for the operator defined by m(X ₁,..., X _n , Y ₁,..., Y _n , T).     

Relaxation and regularity in the calculus of variations

In this work we prove that, if L(t,u,ξ) is a continuous function in t and u, Borel measurable in ξ, with bounded non-convex pieces in ξ, then any absolutely continuous solution to the variational problem

     

Variations on seven points: An introduction to the scope and methods of coding theory and finite geometries

We use a simple example (the projective plane on seven points) to give an introductory survey on the problems and methods in finite geometries — an area of mathematics related to geometry, combinatorial theory, algebra, group theory and number theory as well as to applied mathematics (e.g., coding theory, information theory, statistical design of experiments, tomography, cryptography, etc.). As this list already indicates, finite geometries is — both from the point of view of pure mathematics and from that of applications related to computer science and communication engineering — one of the most interesting and active fields of mathematics. It is the aim of this paper to introduce the nonspecialist to some of these aspects.To Professor Günter Pickert on the occasion of his 65th birthday     

A symmetry problem in the calculus of variations

Let be a ball in ^N, centered at zero, and letu be a minimizer of the nonconvex functional over one of the classesC _M := {w W _loc ^1, () 0 w(x) M in,w concave} orE _M := {w W _loc ^1,2 () 0 w(x) M in,w 0 inL()}of admissible functions. Thenu is not radial and not unique. Therefore one can further reduce the resistance of Newton's rotational body of minimal resistance through symmetry breaking.     

Factorial regular representation of groups in complete graphs

A necessary and sufficient condition for the group of isomorphisms involved in a factorization of a complete graph into isomorphic factors is established.     

A decomposition theorem for maxitive measures

A maxitive measure is the analogue of a finitely additive measure or charge, in which the usual addition is replaced by the supremum operation. In contrast to charges, maxitive measures often have a density. We show that maxitive measures can be decomposed as the supremum of a maxitive measure with density, and a residual maxitive measure that is null on compact sets under specific conditions.     

An α-approximation theorem for Q∞-manifolds

Given a Q^∞-manifold M and an open cover α of M, there is an open cover β of M such that every β-equivalence from a Q^∞-manifold N to M is α-close to a homeomorphism. Consequently, every Q^∞-deficient subset in a C^∞-manifold M is strongly negligible in M.     

Singular integrals with rough kernels along real-analytic submanifolds in R n

L ^p mapping properties will be established in this paper for singular Radon transforms with rough kernels defined by translated of a real-analytic submanifold in R ⁿ .Work in this paper was done during the second author's visit at the Department of Mathematics, University of Pittsburgh.Supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-9622979.     

Schilder theorem for the Brownian motion on the diffeomorphism group of the circle

We prove a large deviation principle for flows associated to stochastic differential equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients. As an application we establish a Schilder Theorem for the Brownian motion on the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle.     

On automorphism groups of Cayley graphs

LetX _G,H denote the Cayley graph of a finite groupG with respect to a subsetH. It is well-known that its automorphism groupA(X_G,H) must contain the regular subgroupL _G corresponding to the set of left multiplications by elements ofG. This paper is concerned with minimizing the index [A(X_G,H)L_G] for givenG, in particular when this index is always greater than 1. IfG is abelian but not one of seven exceptional groups, then a Cayley graph ofG exists for which this index is at most 2. Nearly complete results for the generalized dicyclic groups are also obtained.     

An operator version of the Newman-Shapiro isometry theorem

We establish an operator version of the Newman — Shapiro Isometry Theorem for operators satisfying generalized canonical commutation relations. An application to operator inequalities is also given.     

An extension of Edelstein's theorem to a uniform space

Summary The paper contains fixed point theorems of Edelstein's type for contractive mappings in (,)-chainable uniform spaces.     

A transmission problem in the calculus of variations
