We analyze spatiotemporal light localization at the interface separating two different periodic photonic lattices. We demonstrate the existence of a novel class of continuous-discrete spatiotemporal solitons propagating along the interface, including hybrid staggered-unstaggered discrete light bullets with tails belonging to spectral gaps of different types.  相似文献

We present a design and protocol to achieve an essential feature of an optical transistor, namely the amplification of input signal with the use of discrete solitons in waveguide arrays. We consider the scattering of a discrete soliton by a reflectionless potential in the presence of a control soliton. We show that at the sharp transition region between full reflectance and full transmittance, the intensity of the reflected or transmitted soliton is highly sensitive to the intensity of the control soliton. This suggests a setup of signal amplifier. For realistic purposes, we modulate the parameters of the reflectionless potential well to achieve a performance of amplifier with a controllable amplification. To facilitate the experimental realization, we calculate the amplification factor in terms of the parameters of the potential well and the input power of the control soliton. The suggested signal amplifier device will be an important component in the all-optical data processing.  相似文献

We report an experimental study of discrete gap solitons in binary arrays of optical waveguides. We observe self-focusing indicating soliton generation when the inclination angle of an input beam is slightly above the Bragg angle and show that the propagation direction of the emerging gap soliton is influenced by the effect of interband momentum exchange.  相似文献

We demonstrate that both the linear (diffraction) and the nonlinear dynamics of two-dimensional waveguide arrays are considerably more complex and versatile than their one-dimensional counterparts. The discrete diffraction properties of these arrays can be effectively altered, depending on the propagation Bloch k-vector within the first Brillouin zone of the lattice. In general, this diffraction behavior is anisotropic and therefore permits the existence of a new class of discrete elliptic solitons in the nonlinear regime.  相似文献

The fundamental peculiarities of discrete diffraction in the two-dimensional waveguide arrays were studied. The discrete diffraction properties of such arrays can be effectively altered, depending upon the input conditions. By slightly changing the input conditions, light can experience normal diffraction in one-direction and experience anomalous diffraction in the other.  相似文献

We study the trapping process of moving discrete solitons by linear and nonlinear impurities embedded in a one-dimensional nonlinear cubic array. We show that there exist specific values for the strength of the impurity and for the angle where a strong trapping is obtained. We introduce a criterion for studying the scattering dynamics of localized waves in nonlinear extended systems where the trapping of energy takes place.  相似文献

采用Petviashvili迭代法对光诱导平面波导阵列中的一维离散空间光孤子进行求解,利用分步束传播法对离散空间光孤子间的相干相互作用进行了详细的数值模拟.探讨了离散孤子间的相位差、孤子光强、波导阵列写入光的强度和周期以及外加电场对相互作用过程的影响.结果表明:离散孤子间的相位差对相互作用的影响与连续介质中的情况类似,不同相位差情况下的相互作用也表现为吸引、排斥以及能量转移等现象.同时,离散孤子间的相干相互作用过程(如融合距离和排斥间距等)均会受到孤子光强、波导阵列写入光的强度和周期以及外加电场大小的影响 关键词: 光诱导平面波导阵列 离散空间光孤子 相干相互作用  相似文献

We report the first experimental observation of discrete solitons in an array of optically induced waveguides. The waveguide lattice is induced in real time by illuminating a photorefractive crystal with a pair of interfering plane waves. We demonstrate two types of bright discrete solitons: in-phase self-localized states and the staggered (pi out-of-phase) soliton family. This experiment is the first observation of bright staggered solitons in any physical system. Our scheme paves the way for reconfigurable focusing and defocusing photonic lattices where low-power (mW) discrete solitons can be thoroughly investigated.  相似文献

Propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) through a set of nanoscale metal waveguide arrays (MWGAs) is numerically simulated by using the finite-difference time-domain method. The results reveal that MWGAs show an interesting lens effect on SPPs: SPPs can be strongly focused or defocused by the MWGAs, which we attribute to anomalous coupling of SPPs in MWGAs. Our results imply interesting potential for MWGAs in, for example, nonlinear optics, optical imaging, and nanosensing.  相似文献

We propose a mechanism for realising a unidirectional flow of discrete solitons in optical waveguide arrays. Modulating the nonlinear interaction strength in each waveguide according to a double reflectionless potential well with slight difference in the depths of its two wells, we achieve a unidirectional flow of the soliton propagation. We verify clearly, through the transport coefficients as in terms of the speed of the incident soliton, that an incident soliton velocity window of finite width exists where unidirectional flow can be realised. We discuss the physics underlying this behaviour on the basis of energy exchange between the soliton's kinetic and interaction energies.  相似文献

A new wide-angle, low-loss, symmetrical Y-branch waveguide is proposed. The waveguide configuration utilizes ribs for lateral confinement in the planar guiding region underneath. This Y-branch structure can be fabricated easily without an additional process step. Together with a utilization of the multimode interference effect, a local decrease of the waveguide ridge in the wedge part of the Y-branch reduces the radiation loss. When proper@ designed, the proposed Y-branch has a radiation loss as low as 2.2 dB at a branch angle of 6° with the index difference (Δn/n) as small as 7.1 × 10-4 at a wavelength of 870 nm in the TE fundamental mode as compared to 12.6 dB for a conventional Y-branch. The proposed method yields corresponding advantages for waveguide designs with a higher Δn/n ratio and can also be adapted in combination with S-branch designs.  相似文献

A systematic study of fabrication and characterization of rhodamine-blue (Rh-B) doped polystyrene waveguide is presented. Optical absorption and mode effective refractive index measurement was performed on the waveguides fabricated on glass substrate prepared by dip coating technique. It is observed that doping of dye increase the index of refraction of waveguides. The losses, however, decrease initially for dye concentration upto 0.1% and thereafter increase rapidly.  相似文献

The Fourier transform of a coherent optical image can be evaluated physically by use of a single lens plus free-space propagation, thereby providing the basis for the field of Fourier optics. I point out that one can similarly evaluate the discrete Fourier transform of a sampled or pixelated optical array physically by passing the discrete array amplitudes through a network of single-mode fibers or optical waveguides. A passive optical network that evaluates the fast Fourier transform of a coherent array can be fabricated by use of (N/2)log(2)[N] optical 3-dB couplers plus small added phase shifts. Implementing such networks in fiber or integrated optical form could provide the basis for a possible technology of fiber Fourier optics.  相似文献

Transmission characteristics of optical fibers—in particular loss and pulse spreading—are assessed from the viewpoint of their structures. Various methods of fiber strengthening and structuring cables are described from the viewpoint of mechanical strength. Coupling efficiencies of detachable connectors and methods of permanent fiber splicing are described. Bright and dark spatial gap solitons are demonstrated in waveguide arrays. These gap solitons travel across the array at zero transverse velocity, in complete analogy with stationary (immobile) temporal gap solitons. Furthermore, the launching configuration for observing these stationary gap solitons is shown to be the analog of an "ideal experiment" for observing stationary temporal gap solitons, never observed so far. A clear distinction is established between the family of Floquet-Bloch solitons in general and discrete solitons in particular, and the limiting case of gap solitons.  相似文献

We consider, both experimentally and theoretically, the existence and stability of localized, symmetric, and antisymmetric gap solitons (GSs) in binary lattices of identical waveguides but with alternating spacings.
