Classes defined by stars and neighbourhood assignments

We apply and develop an idea of E. van Douwen used to define D-spaces. Given a topological property P, the class P^∗ dual to P (with respect to neighbourhood assignments) consists of spaces X such that for any neighbourhood assignment there is Y⊂X with Y∈P and . We prove that the classes of compact, countably compact and pseudocompact are self-dual with respect to neighbourhood assignments. It is also established that all spaces dual to hereditarily Lindelöf spaces are Lindelöf. In the second part of this paper we study some non-trivial classes of pseudocompact spaces defined in an analogous way using stars of open covers instead of neighbourhood assignments.     

The transitivity of induced maps

For a metric continuum X, we consider the hyperspaces X² and C(X) of the closed and nonempty subsets of X and of subcontinua of X, respectively, both with the Hausdorff metric. For a given map we investigate the transitivity of the induced maps and . Among other results, we show that if X is a dendrite or a continuum of type λ and is a map, then C(f) is not transitive. However, if X is the Hilbert cube, then there exists a transitive map such that f² and C(f) are transitive.     

On the topological Helly theorem

The main result of this paper is the following theorem, related to the missing link in the proof of the topological version of the classical result of Helly: Let be any family of simply connected compact subsets of R² such that for every i,j∈{0,1,2} the intersections Xi∩Xj are path connected and is nonempty. Then for every two points in the intersection there exists a cell-like compactum connecting these two points, in particular the intersection is a connected set.     

On the automorphisms of the spectral completion of the algebraic numbers field

Let be the absolute Galois group of Q and let A=C(G,C) be the Banach algebra of all continuous functions defined on G with values in C. Let be the conjugation automorphism of C and let B be the R-Banach subalgebra of A consisting of continuous functions f such that for all σ∈G. Let ‖x‖=sup{|σ(x)|:σ∈G} be the spectral norm on and let be the spectral completion of . Using a canonical isometry between and B we study the structure of the group of R-algebras automorphisms of and the structure of its subgroup of all automorphisms of which when restricted to give rise to elements of G. We introduce a topology on and prove that this last one is homeomorphic and group isomorphic to G.     

The bicompletion of the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity

We study conditions under which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity UH of a quasi-uniform space (X,U) on the set P₀(X) of the nonempty subsets of X is bicomplete.Indeed we present an explicit method to construct the bicompletion of the T₀-quotient of the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of a quasi-uniform space. It is used to find a characterization of those quasi-uniform T₀-spaces (X,U) for which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of their bicompletion on is bicomplete.     

Sequences of semicontinuous functions accompanying continuous functions

A space X is said to have property (USC) (resp. (LSC)) if whenever is a sequence of upper (resp. lower) semicontinuous functions from X into the closed unit interval [0,1] converging pointwise to the constant function 0 with the value 0, there is a sequence of continuous functions from X into [0,1] such that fn?gn (n∈ω) and converges pointwise to 0. In this paper, we study spaces having these properties and related ones. In particular, we show that (a) for a subset X of the real line, X has property (USC) if and only if it is a σ-set; (b) if X is a space of non-measurable cardinal and has property (LSC), then it is discrete. Our research comes of Scheepers' conjecture on properties S₁(Γ,Γ) and wQN.     

On some geometric parameters in Banach spaces

Let X be a normed linear space and be the unit sphere of X. Let , , and J(X)=sup{‖x+y‖∧‖x−y‖}, x and y∈S(X) be the modulus of convexity, the modulus of smoothness, and the modulus of squareness of X, respectively. Let . In this paper we proved some sufficient conditions on δ(?), ρX(?), J(X), E(X), and , where the supremum is taken over all the weakly null sequence xn in X and all the elements x of X for the uniform normal structure.     

Geodesic currents and Teichmüller space

Consider a hyperbolic surface X of infinite area. The Liouville map assigns to any quasiconformal deformation of X a measure on the space of geodesics of the universal covering X? of X. We show that the Liouville map is a homeomorphism from the Teichmüller space onto its image, and that the image is closed and unbounded. The set of asymptotic rays to consists of all bounded measured laminations on X. Hence, the set of projective bounded measured laminations is a natural boundary for . The action of the quasiconformal mapping class group on continuously extends to this boundary for .     

Exponentiable monomorphisms in categories of domains

We give a characterization of exponentiable monomorphisms in the categories of ω-complete posets, of directed complete posets and of continuous directed complete posets as those monotone maps f that are convex and that lift an element (and then a queue) of any directed set (ω-chain in the case of ) whose supremum is in the image of f (Theorem 1.9). Using this characterization, we obtain that a monomorphism f:X→B in (, ) exponentiable in w.r.t. the Scott topology is exponentiable also in (, ). We prove that the converse is true in the category , but neither in , nor in .     

A bounded property for gradients of diffusion semigroups on Euclidean spaces

We consider uniformly elliptic diffusion processes X(t,x) on Euclidean spaces , with some conditions in terms of the drift term (see assumptions A2 and A3). By using interpolation theory, we show a bounded property which gives an estimate of involving |x| and but not ||∇f||_∞, and a power of smaller than 1.     

The distribution of patterns of inverses modulo a prime

We investigate the distribution of the numbers x∈[1,p] for which all lie in a subset of the set of multiplicative inverses modulo a prime p. Here the a_i are integers coprime to p and the numbers are distinct .     

Continuous selections and σ-spaces

Assume that X⊆R?Q, and each clopen-valued lower semicontinuous multivalued map has a continuous selection . Our main result is that in this case, X is a σ-space. We also derive a partial converse implication, and present a reformulation of the Scheepers Conjecture in the language of continuous selections.
