Although they are simple techniques from the early days of timetabling research, graph colouring heuristics are still attracting significant research interest in the timetabling research community. These heuristics involve simple ordering strategies to first select and colour those vertices that are most likely to cause trouble if deferred until later. Most of this work used a single heuristic to measure the difficulty of a vertex. Relatively less attention has been paid to select an appropriate colour for the selected vertex. Some recent work has demonstrated the superiority of combining a number of different heuristics for vertex and colour selection. In this paper, we explore this direction and introduce a new strategy of using linear combinations of heuristics for weighted graphs which model the timetabling problems under consideration. The weights of the heuristic combinations define specific roles that each simple heuristic contributes to the process of ordering vertices. We include specific explanations for the design of our strategy and present the experimental results on a set of benchmark real world examination timetabling problem instances. New best results for several instances have been obtained using this method when compared with other constructive methods applied to this benchmark dataset.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to give a brief introduction to some recent approaches to timetabling problems that have been developed or are under development in the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning Research Group (ASAP) at the University of Nottingham. We have concentrated upon university timetabling but we believe that some of the methodologies that are described can be used for different timetabling problems such as employee timetabling, timetabling of sports fixtures, etc. The paper suggests a number of approaches and comprises three parts. Firstly, recent heuristic and evolutionary timetabling algorithms are discussed. In particular, two evolutionary algorithm developments are described: a method for decomposing large real-world timetabling problems and a method for heuristic initialisation of the population. Secondly, an approach that considers timetabling problems as multicriteria decision problems is presented. Thirdly, we discuss a case-based reasoning approach that employs previous experience to solve new timetabling problems. Finally, we outline some new research ideas and directions in the field of timetabling. The overall aim of these research directions is to explore approaches that can operate at a higher level of generality than is currently possible.  相似文献

This paper explores mathematical programming models for an exam timetabling problem related to Kuwait University (KU). In particular, we consider two subproblems: (a) the ExamTimetabling Problem (ETP), which is concerned with assigning exams to designated exam-periods and classrooms, and (b) the Proctor Assignment Problem (PAP), which deals with the assignment of proctors to exams. While this exam timetabling problem is ubiquitous in many academic institutions worldwide, idiosyncrasies of the problem related to gender-based policies and having multiple exam centers at KU require novel models. A mixed-integer exam timetabling programming model (ETM) is developed for ETP, which takes into account restrictions related to exam-period conflicts, facility and human resources, and commuting and traffic considerations. Assuming that exam-periods are specified for all exams as determined by ETM, another mixed-integer programming model is formulated for PAP, denoted by PAM, which incorporates the proctors’ preferences for specific days and exam-periods. Computational results are reported and analyzed for solving ETM and PAM directly using the CPLEX Optimization Software (version 9.0), and for implementing a specialized sequential LP-based heuristic for solving PAM. The results obtained significantly improve upon those derived via the existing manual approach implemented at KU, in terms of eliminating conflicts as well as from the overall efficiency and equity points of view.  相似文献

Research in the domain of examination timetabling is moving towards developing methods that generalise well over a range of problems. This is achieved by implementing hyper-heuristic systems to find the best heuristic or heuristic combination to allocate examinations when constructing a timetable for a problem. Heuristic combinations usually take the form of a list of low-level heuristics that are applied sequentially. This study proposes an alternative representation for heuristic combinations, namely, a hierarchical combination of heuristics. Furthermore, the heuristics in each combination are applied simultaneously rather than sequentially. The study also introduces a new low-level heuristic, namely, highest cost. A set of heuristic combinations of this format have been tested on the 13 Carter benchmarks. The quality of the examination timetables induced using these combinations are comparable to, and in some cases better than, those produced by hyper-heuristic systems combining and applying heuristic combinations sequentially.  相似文献

A common class of problem in the area of course timetabling is the scheduling of optional subjects so that each member of the class is able to attend as many as possible of his preferred options without clashes. A simple heuristic framework is described which produces near-optimal solutions very quickly. Various decision rules are tested on actual course data and the best available policies are identified.  相似文献

Many examination timetabling procedures employ a phased approach in which the first phase is often the allocation of a large set of mutually conflicting examinations which form a clique in the associated problem graph. The usual practice is to identify a single maximum clique, often quite arbitrarily, in this first phase. We show that in typical examination timetabling problems, unlike random graphs, there are often many alternative maximum cliques, and even larger dense subsets of nodes that are almost cliques. A number of methods are proposed for extending the scope of the clique initialisation to include a larger subset of examinations by considering sub-maximum cliques and/or quasi-cliques.  相似文献

Sports timetabling problems are combinatorial optimization problems which consist of creating a timetable that defines against whom, when, and where teams play games. In the literature, sports timetabling problems have been reported featuring a wide variety of constraints and objectives. This variety makes it challenging to identify the relevant set of papers for a given sports timetabling problem. Moreover, the lack of a generally accepted data format makes that problem instances and their solutions are rarely shared. Consequently, it is hard to assess algorithmic performance since solution methods are often tested on just one or two specific instances. To mitigate these issues, this paper presents RobinX, a three-field notation to describe a sports timetabling problem by means of the tournament format, the constraints in use, and the objective. We use this notation to classify sports timetabling problems presented in the operations research literature during the last five decades. Moreover, RobinX contains xml-based file templates to store problem instances and their solutions and presents an online platform that offers three useful tools. First, a query tool assists users to select the relevant set of papers for a given timetabling problem. Second, the online platform provides access to an xml data repository that contains real-life problem instances from different countries and sports. Finally, the website enables users to interact with a free and open-source C++-library to read and write xml files and to validate and evaluate encoded instances and solutions.  相似文献

Various formulations of timetabling problems are given in terms of coloring problems in graphs. We consider a collection of simple class-teacher timetabling problems and review complexity issues for these formulations. This tutorial presentation (which is not claimed to be an exhaustive review nor a research contribution) includes a brief sketch of a tabu search procedure which handles many specific requirements and provides an efficient heuristic technique.  相似文献

Automating high school timetabling is a challenging task. This problem is a well known hard computational problem which has been of interest to practitioners as well as researchers. High schools need to timetable their regular activities once per year, or even more frequently. The exact solvers might fail to find a solution for a given instance of the problem. A selection hyper-heuristic can be defined as an easy-to-implement, easy-to-maintain and effective ‘heuristic to choose heuristics’ to solve such computationally hard problems. This paper describes the approach of the team hyper-heuristic search strategies and timetabling (HySST) to high school timetabling which competed in all three rounds of the third international timetabling competition. HySST generated the best new solutions for three given instances in Round 1 and gained the second place in Rounds 2 and 3. It achieved this by using a fairly standard stochastic search method but significantly enhanced by a selection hyper-heuristic with an adaptive acceptance mechanism.  相似文献

Automating the neighbourhood selection process in an iterative approach that uses multiple heuristics is not a trivial task. Hyper-heuristics are search methodologies that not only aim to provide a general framework for solving problem instances at different difficulty levels in a given domain, but a key goal is also to extend the level of generality so that different problems from different domains can also be solved. Indeed, a major challenge is to explore how the heuristic design process might be automated. Almost all existing iterative selection hyper-heuristics performing single point search contain two successive stages; heuristic selection and move acceptance. Different operators can be used in either of the stages. Recent studies explore ways of introducing learning mechanisms into the search process for improving the performance of hyper-heuristics. In this study, a broad empirical analysis is performed comparing Monte Carlo based hyper-heuristics for solving capacitated examination timetabling problems. One of these hyper-heuristics is an approach that overlaps two stages and presents them in a single algorithmic body. A learning heuristic selection method (L) operates in harmony with a simulated annealing move acceptance method using reheating (SA) based on some shared variables. Yet, the heuristic selection and move acceptance methods can be separated as the proposed approach respects the common selection hyper-heuristic framework. The experimental results show that simulated annealing with reheating as a hyper-heuristic move acceptance method has significant potential. On the other hand, the learning hyper-heuristic using simulated annealing with reheating move acceptance (L?CSA) performs poorly due to certain weaknesses, such as the choice of rewarding mechanism and the evaluation of utility values for heuristic selection as compared to some other hyper-heuristics in examination timetabling. Trials with other heuristic selection methods confirm that the best alternative for the simulated annealing with reheating move acceptance for examination timetabling is a previously proposed strategy known as the choice function.  相似文献

Owing to its theoretical as well as practical significance, the facility layout problem with unequal-area departments has been studied for several decades, with a wide range of heuristic and a few exact solution procedures developed by numerous researchers. In one of the exact procedures, the facility layout problem is formulated as a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model in which binary (0/1) variables are used to prevent departments from overlapping with one another. Obtaining an optimal solution to the MIP model is difficult, and currently only problems with a limited number of departments can be solved to optimality. Motivated by this situation, we developed a heuristic procedure which uses a “graph pair” to determine and manipulate the relative location of the departments in the layout. The graph-pair representation technique essentially eliminates the binary variables in the MIP model, which allows the heuristic to solve a large number of linear programming models to construct and improve the layout in a comparatively short period of time. The search procedure to improve the layout is driven by a simulated annealing algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed graph-pair heuristic is demonstrated by comparing the results with those reported in recent papers. Possible extensions to the graph-pair representation technique are discussed at the end of the paper.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate adaptive linear combinations of graph coloring heuristics with a heuristic modifier to address the examination timetabling problem. We invoke a normalisation strategy for each parameter in order to generalise the specific problem data. Two graph coloring heuristics were used in this study (largest degree and saturation degree). A score for the difficulty of assigning each examination was obtained from an adaptive linear combination of these two heuristics and examinations in the list were ordered based on this value. The examinations with the score value representing the higher difficulty were chosen for scheduling based on two strategies. We tested for single and multiple heuristics with and without a heuristic modifier with different combinations of weight values for each parameter on the Toronto and ITC2007 benchmark data sets. We observed that the combination of multiple heuristics with a heuristic modifier offers an effective way to obtain good solution quality. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach delivers promising results. We conclude that this adaptive linear combination of heuristics is a highly effective method and simple to implement.  相似文献

The timetabling problem is generally large, highly constrained and discrete in nature. This makes solution by exact optimisation methods difficult. Therefore, often a heuristic search is deemed acceptable providing a simple (non-optimal) solution. This paper discusses the timetabling problem for a university department, where a large-scale integer goal programming (IGP) formulation is implemented for its efficient optimal solution in two phases. The first phase allocates lectures to rooms and the second allocates start-times to lectures. Owing to the size and complicated nature of the model, an initial analysis procedure is employed to manipulate the data to produce a more manageable model, resulting in considerable reductions in problem size and increase of performance. Both phases are modelled as IGPs. Phase 1 is solved using a state-of-the-art IGP optimisation package. However, due to the scale of the model, phase 2 is solved to optimality using a genetic algorithm approach.  相似文献

This paper presents a real-world, capacitated examination timetabling problem from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Malaysia. The problem has constraints which have not been modelled before, these being the distance between examination rooms and splitting exams across several rooms. These constraints provide additional challenges in defining a suitable model and in developing a constructive heuristic. One of the contributions of this paper is to formally define this real-world problem. A further contribution is the constructive heuristic that is able to produce good quality solutions for the problem, which are superior to the solutions that are produced using the university’s current software. Moreover, our method adheres to all hard constraints which the current systems fails to do.  相似文献

This paper approximately solves the high school timetabling problem using a simulated annealing based algorithm with a newly-designed neighborhood structure. In search for the best neighbor, the heuristic performs a sequence of swaps between pairs of time slots, instead of swapping two assignments as in a standard simulated annealing. The computational results show that the proposed heuristic, which is tested on two sets of benchmark instances, performs better than existing approaches.  相似文献

Neighbourhood search algorithms are often the most effective known approaches for solving partitioning problems. In this paper, we consider the capacitated examination timetabling problem as a partitioning problem and present an examination timetabling methodology that is based upon the large neighbourhood search algorithm that was originally developed by Ahuja and Orlin. It is based on searching a very large neighbourhood of solutions using graph theoretical algorithms implemented on a so-called improvement graph. In this paper, we present a tabu-based large neighbourhood search, in which the improvement moves are kept in a tabu list for a certain number of iterations. We have drawn upon Ahuja–Orlin's methodology incorporated with tabu lists and have developed an effective examination timetabling solution scheme which we evaluated on capacitated problem benchmark data sets from the literature. The capacitated problem includes the consideration of room capacities and, as such, represents an issue that is of particular importance in real-world situations. We compare our approach against other methodologies that have appeared in the literature over recent years. Our computational experiments indicate that the approach we describe produces the best known results on a number of these benchmark problems.  相似文献

Integer programming has always been an alternative for formulating combinatorial problems such as the university timetabling problem. However, the effort required for modeling complicated operational rules, as well as the computational difficulties that result from the size of real problems have discouraged researchers and made them turn their interest to other approaches. In this paper, a two-stage relaxation procedure that solves efficiently the integer programming formulation of a university timetabling problem is presented. The relaxation is performed in the first stage and concerns the constraints that warrantee consecutiveness in multi-period sessions of certain courses. These constraints, which are computationally heavier than the others, are recovered during the second stage and a number of sub-problems, one for each day of the week, are solved for local optima. Comparing to a solution approach that solves the problem in a single stage, computation time is reduced significantly without any loss in quality for the resulting timetables. The new solution approach gives a chance for further improvements in the final timetables, as well as for certain degree of interaction with the users during the construction of the timetables.  相似文献

This paper presents an investigation of a simple generic hyper-heuristic approach upon a set of widely used constructive heuristics (graph coloring heuristics) in timetabling. Within the hyper-heuristic framework, a tabu search approach is employed to search for permutations of graph heuristics which are used for constructing timetables in exam and course timetabling problems. This underpins a multi-stage hyper-heuristic where the tabu search employs permutations upon a different number of graph heuristics in two stages. We study this graph-based hyper-heuristic approach within the context of exploring fundamental issues concerning the search space of the hyper-heuristic (the heuristic space) and the solution space. Such issues have not been addressed in other hyper-heuristic research. These approaches are tested on both exam and course benchmark timetabling problems and are compared with the fine-tuned bespoke state-of-the-art approaches. The results are within the range of the best results reported in the literature. The approach described here represents a significantly more generally applicable approach than the current state of the art in the literature. Future work will extend this hyper-heuristic framework by employing methodologies which are applicable on a wider range of timetabling and scheduling problems.  相似文献

Heuristic ordering based methods, very similar to those used for graph colouring problems, have long been applied successfully to the examination timetabling problem. Despite the success of these methods on real life problems, even with limited computing resources, the approach has the fundamental flaw that it is only as effective as the heuristic that is used. We present a method that adapts to suit a particular problem instance “on the fly.” This method provides an alternative to existing forms of ‘backtracking,’ which are often required to cope with the possible unsuitability of a heuristic. We present a range of experiments on benchmark problems to test and evaluate the approach. In comparison to other published approaches to solving this problem, the adaptive method is more general, significantly quicker and easier to implement and produces results that are at least comparable (if not better) than the current state of the art. We also demonstrate the level of generality of this approach by starting it with the inverse of a known good heuristic, a null ordering and random orderings, showing that the adaptive method can transform a bad heuristic ordering into a good one.  相似文献

This paper concerns a study of the cutting-stock problem faced by a small company in the building components industry in Singapore. It involves the development of a simple heuristic procedure which is able to recommend cutting patterns tailored to the specific needs of the company. To help determine the appropriate stock lengths to order, a simulation-cum-sampling approach is proposed. The pattern-generating heuristic has been tested using real-life project data. The results obtained are very encouraging in that the goals set by the management of the firm are met well within the numerous constraints faced.  相似文献
