The chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from aerial parts of Anthemis wiedemanniana, an endemic taxon of Turkey, were investigated. Linalool (12.75%), 1,8-cineole (8.49%), hexadecanoic acid (6.09%), and chrysanthenone (5.67%) were found to be the main components among the 122 compounds characterized in the essential oil of Anthemis wiedemanniana. Antimicrobial activities were reported against 12 microorganisms and five yeast-like fungi by the disc diffusion method. The essential oil of the leaves of Cupressus sempervirens L. was isolated by hydrodistillation and tested against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, showing remarkable antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) 75%. The antiviral activity of the essential oil was tested against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), showing antiviral activity with virucidal percentages of 68.0% and 53.2% at concentrations of 1:32 and 1:64, respectively. We firstly reported the isolation of two epi-betulin esters of fatty acids from the CHCl3 fraction of Cupressus sempervirens L. leaves, which were isolated and purified using HPLC, and identified using PMR and MS. The antibacterial effects of Thymus vulgaris (Lamiaceae), Lavandula angustifolia (Lamiaceae), and Calamintha nepeta (Lamiaceae) Savi subsp. nepeta var. subisodonda (Borb.) Hayek essential oils on five different bacteria were estimated. Laboratory control strain and clinical isolates from different pathogenic media were researched by broth microdilution method, with an emphasis on a chemical composition–antibacterial activity relationship. The main constituents of thyme oil were thymol (59.95%) and p-cymene (18.34%). Linalool acetate (38.23%) and β-linalool (35.01%) were main compounds in lavender oil. C. nepeta essential oil was characterized by a high percentage of piperitone oxide (59.07%) and limonene (9.05%). Essential oils have been found to have antimicrobial activity against all tested microorganisms. Classification and comparison of essential oils on the basis of their chemical composition and antibacterial activity were made by utilization of appropriate chemometric methods. The chemical principal component analysis (PCA) and hierachical cluster analysis (HCA) separated essential oils into two groups and two sub-groups. Thyme essential oil forms separate chemical HCA group and exhibits highest antibacterial activity, similar to tetracycline. Essential oils of lavender and C. nepeta in the same chemical HCA group were classified in different groups, within antibacterial PCA and HCA analyses. Lavender oil exhibits higher antibacterial ability in comparison with C. nepeta essential oil, probably based on the concept of synergistic activity of essential oil components.  相似文献

Aerial parts of Sideritis cilicica Boiss. & Bal. and Sideritis bilgerana P.H. Davis (Lamiaceae) were hydrodistilled to obtain essential oils that were then analyzed by GC and GC/MS. β-Pinene (39%), α-pinene (28%), and β-phellandrene (20%) were the main components in the oil of S. cilicica, while β-pinene (48%), and α-pinene (32%) were the major constituents in the oil of S. bilgerana. The antimicrobial activities of the oils were evaluated by using the microdilution broth method. The hydrodistilled oils from the aerial parts of Ferula latisecta and Mozaffariania insignis, which is endemic to Iran, were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. (Z)-Ocimenone (32.4%), (E)-ocimenone (20.3%), and cis-pinocarvone (11.4%) were the main components among the 22 constituents characterized in the oil of F. latisecta, representing 87.7% of the total components detected. Twenty-five compounds were identified in the oil of M. insignis, representing 99.0% of the total oil, with octyl acetate (41.1%), β-pinene (30.3%), and α-pinene (23.9%) as the main constituents. The composition of the essential oil of the aerial parts of Scabiosa flavida was investigated by GC and GC-MS. Forty-three components representing 94.2% of the essential oil were characterized. The main components of the oil were tricosane (15.5%), rosifoliol (15.3%), (E)-caryophyllene (10.7%), and α-humulene (7.9%). The chemical compositions and antimicrobial activities of the essential oils from two Turkish endemic species, Prangos platychlaena and P. uechtritzii, were investigated. Hydrodistillation was used to isolate the essential oils, and the chemical analyses were performed by GC and GC-MS. The antimicrobial activity was tested by the microdilution technique against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Candida albicans, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis. δ-3-Carene (3.39%) and p-cymene (3.38%) were identified as major components in P. platychlaena, and α-pinene (40.82%), nonene (17.03%), β-phellandrene (11.14%), δ-3-carene (7.39%), and p-cymene (4.90%) in P. uechtritzii. The composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Tanacetum walteri were studied. Aerial flowering parts of plant were collected from North Khorasan Province of Iran and the essential oil was isolated by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was determined by disc diffusion and MIC and MBC determination. Thirty-five compounds were identified in the oil of T. walteri accounting for 94.4% of the total oil. Thymol (22.5%), 1,8-cineole (8.2%), umbellulone (6.9%), α-bisabolol (6.3%) and camphor (5.3%) were as the principal constituents. The highest antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was observed against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Klebsiella pneumoniae with MIC value of 0.63 mg/mL. The inhibitory effect of the essential oil of T. walteri could be attributed mainly to the high levels of phenolic compound thymol and oxygenated terpenes in essential oil.  相似文献

The essential oil, methanolic and aqueous extracts of the leaves and rhizomes of Hedychium coronarium Koen. (Zingiberaceae) were assayed for their antimicrobial, mosquito larvicidal and antioxidant properties. The chemical composition of the essential oil of two organs was analyzed by GC/MS analysis. β‐Pinene (33.9%), α‐pinene (14.7%), 1,8‐cineole (13.3%), r‐elemene (11.0%) and carotol (9.1%) were the main components in the leaf oil, including 82.0% terpenoid compounds. The major constituents of the rhizome oil were 1,8‐cineole (37.3%), β‐pinene (23.0%), α‐terpineol (10.4%) and α‐pinene (9.9%), comprising 80.6% of the oil. The leaf and rhizome essential oil displayed significant antimicrobial activity, as determined by the disc‐diffusion method, inhibiting the growth of all five fungal and four bacterial strains tested. The antimicrobial nature of the essential oil is related to high terpenoid contents. The leaf oil exhibited the mosquito larvicidal activity with 2 h and 24 h LC50 values of 111 and 90 ppm, respectively, while the rhizome oil showed the larvicidal activity with 2 h and 24 h LC50 values of 86 and 47 ppm, respectively. β‐Pinene, α‐pinene and 1,8‐cineol in H. coronarium serve as the principal larvicidal components of both oils. The individual antioxidant assays such as DPPH scavenging activity, chelating effect of ferrous ions and reducing power have been used. The present study demonstrated that the polar extracts of H. coronarium possessed anti‐oxidant. Appreciable total phenolic content (18.5‐26.3 mg/g) was also detected by Folin‐Ciocalteu test.  相似文献

The aerial parts of wild and cultivated Mentha mozaffarianii Jamzad were collected at full flowering stage from two provinces (Hormozgan and Fars) of Iran. The essential oils were extracted by a Clevenger approach and analysed using GC and GC–MS. The main components in wild plants were piperitenone (33.85%), piperitone (21.18%), linalool (6.89%), pulegone (5.93%), 1, 8.cineole (5.49%), piperitenone oxide (5.17%) and menthone (4.69%) and in cultivated plants, cis-piperitone epoxide (28.89%), linalool (15.36%), piperitone (11.57%), piperitenone oxide (10.14%), piperitenone (8.42%),1,8-cineole (3.60%) were the main constituents in essential oil. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of M. mozaffarianii was studied against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The results of the bioassays showed that the oil exhibited high antimicrobial activity against all the tested pathogens.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the essential oil from the aerial parts of three Lamiaceae species from Uzbekistan was investigated by GC-MS analysis. β-Linalool (26.6%), α-terpineol (10.0%), coumarin (8.9%) and 4,5,7,7α-tetrahydro-4,4,7α-trimethyl-2(6H)-benzofuranone (5.4%) resulted as the main components of Ajuga turkestanica essential oil, while camphene (17.1%), 1,8-cineole (15.9%), β-cymene (7.9%) and limonene (7.4%) in Phlomis regelii. The essential oil of Thymus seravschanicus was dominated by thymol (37.5%), phellandral (26.0%), τ-terpinene (6.6%) and β-cymene (5.2%). The essential oils had considerable antimicrobial activity against different bacterial strains and fungi. Among the tested samples of essential oils, P. regelii essential oil has the significant antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 117.8 ± 8.02 μg/mL.  相似文献

The essential oil of Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don from Croatia has been fractionated into terpene and terpenoid fractions and analyzed using GC/MS. Fifty-two compounds were identified. The main hydrocarbons of the oil were α-pinene (10.2%), α-cedrene (9.6%) aromadendrene (4.4%), β-caryophyllene (4.2%), and limonene (3.8%), while the main oxygen-containing compounds were neryl acetate (11.5%), 2-methylcyclohexyl pentanoate (8.3%), 2-methylcyclohexyl octanoate (4.8%), and geranyl acetate (4.7%). The essential oil and its terpene and terpenoid fractions were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities. The screening of antimicrobial activity was conducted by a disc diffusion test and the minimum inhibitory concentration was determined against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. The essential oil and its terpenoid fraction exhibited higher antimicrobial activity with respect to the terpene fraction. The component composition of essential oils produced by steam distillation from flower heads, leaves, and stems of Salvia anatolica (Lamiaceae), a recently described new species endemic from Turkey, was studied by GC/FID and GC/MS. A total of 127 volatile components representing 96% of the oil was identified in essential oil from flower heads and leaves. It was found that the principal oil components of flower heads and leaves were α-pinene (10.9%), β-pinene (6.7%), α-copaene (6.3%), heptacosane (6.2%), and hexadecanoic acid (5.0%). A total of 109 volatile compounds representing 87.9% of the oil was characterized in essential oil isolated from stems. The essential oil composition of aerial parts of Santolina etrusca Marchi & D’Amato from Italy was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Twenty-nine compounds of oil were identified representing 97.1% of the oil. The most abundant compounds were viridiflorol (17.9%), terpinen-4-ol (14.4%), myrcene (11.8%), β-pinene (9.9%), and cis-muurola-4(14),5-diene (9.9%). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the GC/MS determination of the essential oil composition of S. etrusca. Ferula gummosa Boiss. (Apiaceae) fruit volatile oil was analyzed by GC/MS. Seventy-three components (96.89%) were identified, and the major components were β-pinene (43.78%), α-pinene (27.27%), and myrcene (3.37%). The antimicrobial activity of the oil was tested on three strains of Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermis, and Bacillus subtilis), three strains of Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and two strains of fungi (Candida albicans and C. kefyr). The essential oil remarkably inhibited the growth of the tested microorganisms. The essential oil of Nepeta satureioides Boiss. from Iran was isolated by hydrodistillation in yield of 0.06% (w/w). The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Forty-five compounds accounting for 97.4% of the total oil were identified. The major components were linalool (23.8%), (Z,E)-farnesol (14.7%), linalyl acetate (11.1%), β-caryophyllene (6.6%), lavandulol acetate (6.6%), caryophyllene oxide (6.4%), and (Z)-β-farnesene (3.4%). The present study gives results of chemical composition analyses and antimicrobial activity testing of three Erodium species: E. ciconium L., E. cicutarium L., and E. absinthoides Willd. Essential oils were obtained by hydro-distillation from air-dried entire plants and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. A total of 209 different compounds were identified: 162 for E. cicutarium, 107 for E. ciconium, and 79 for E. absinthoides. Antimicrobial activity (broth microdilution method) of the oils was screened against a panel of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and a number of fungi. Moderate susceptibility of all tested strains was observed. Determined MIC values were 0.156–5 mg mL−1 (bacterial strains) and 0.039–0.325 mg mL−1 (fungal strains). Major component of the most active oil, palmitic acid, was also tested for activity together with stearic and myristic acids.  相似文献

Abstract

The present study investigated the chemical compositions and antimicrobial activities of essential oil from Pterocarya stenoptera. The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation from the dried leaves of P. stenoptera was analysed by GC–MS and 39 constituents accounting for the total 90.44% of the oil were identified. The main constituents were δ-cadinene (24.83%), caryophyllene oxide (9.10%), α-cadinol (7.48%) and β-elemene (6.24%). The antimicrobial activity of the oil was evaluated by disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The essential oil was found to show broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities against all the tested microorganisms. Bacillus subtilis was the most sensitive strain with the minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.23?mg/mL. The results suggested that the essential oil was a potential source of natural antimicrobials in food preservation and pharmaceutical industry.  相似文献

The Perovskia artemisioides Boiss. essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation method of flowers growing wild in the north of Iran. The study led to the identification of 29 compositions by a combination of HP-5 GC–FID and GC–MS analytical techniques. The constituents were identified in P. artemisioides essential oil with 1,8-cineole (29.9%), camphor (29.5%) and α-pinene (7.8%) as main constituents as well as δ-3-carene (5.1%), camphene (3.3%) and β-pinene (2.7%). The oil was identified by a much larger amount of monoterpenes (87.7%) and sesquiterpenes (6.3%). The results of antimicrobial activity exhibit that the extracted essential oil has presented a high inhibiting activity against five microbial strains up to 18 mm. Also, the MIC and MBC results displayed that Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi were inhibited by P. artemisioides essential oil. Therefore, determination of essential oils in this research showed a relatively similar pattern to those published for the other species of Perovskia.  相似文献
