Building on our earlier work on toric residues and reduction, we give a proof of the mixed toric residue conjecture of Batyrev and Materov. We simplify and streamline our technique of tropical degenerations, which allows one to interpolate between two localization principles: one appearing in the intersection theory of toric quotients and the other in the calculus of toric residues. This quickly leads to the proof of the conjecture, which gives a closed formula for the summation of a generating series whose coefficients represent a certain naive count of the numbers of rational curves on toric complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds.

In this note, we study linear systems on complete toric varieties X with an invariant point whose orbit under the action of Aut(X) contains the dense torus T of X. We give a characterization of such varieties in terms of its defining fan and introduce a new definition of expected dimension of linear systems which consider the contribution given by certain toric subvarieties. Finally, we study degenerations of linear systems on these toric varieties induced by toric degenerations.

In this paper, we prove the degenerations of Schubert varieties in a minusculeG/P, as well as the class of Kempf varieties in the flag varietySL(n)/B, to (normal) toric varieties. As a consequence, we obtain that determinantal varietes degenerate to (normal) toric varieties. Both of the authors are partially supported by NSF Grant DMS 9502942.

We study residues on a complete toric variety X, which are defined in terms of the homogeneous coordinate ring of X.We first prove a global transformation law for toric residues. When the fan of the toric variety has a simplicial cone of maximal dimension, we can produce an element with toric residue equal to 1. We also show that in certain situations, the toric residue is an isomorphism on an appropriate graded piece of the quotient ring. When X is simplicial, we prove that the toric residue is a sum of local residues. In the case of equal degrees, we also show how to represent X as a quotient (Y\{0})/C* such that the toric residue becomes the local residue at 0 in Y.

We study families of polynomial dynamical systems inspired by biochemical reaction networks. We focus on complex balanced mass-action systems, which have also been called toric. They are known or conjectured to enjoy very strong dynamical properties, such as existence and uniqueness of positive steady states, local and global stability, persistence, and permanence. We consider the class of disguised toric dynamical systems, which contains toric dynamical systems, and to which all dynamical properties mentioned above extend naturally. By means of (real) algebraic geometry we show that some reaction networks have an empty toric locus or a toric locus of Lebesgue measure zero in parameter space, while their disguised toric locus is of positive measure. We also propose some algorithms one can use to detect the disguised toric locus.

Let D be an integer matrix. A toric set, namely the points in Kn parametrized by the columns of D, and a toric variety are associated to D. The toric set is a subset of the toric variety. We describe the relation between the toric set and the toric variety, in terms of the orbits of the torus action on the toric variety. The toric set depends on the sign (+,−,0) pattern of the matrix D. Finally, we prove that any toric variety over an algebraically closed field can be expressed as a toric set, for an appropriate matrix.

Following Sam Payne?s work, we study the existence problem of nontrivial vector bundles on toric varieties. The first result we prove is that every complete fan admits a nontrivial conewise linear multivalued function. Such functions could potentially be the Chern classes of toric vector bundles. Then we use the results of Cortiñas, Haesemeyer, Walker and Weibel to show that the (non-equivariant) Grothendieck group of the toric 3-fold studied by Payne is large, so the variety has a nontrivial vector bundle. Using the same computation, we show that every toric 3-fold X either has a nontrivial line bundle, or there is a finite surjective toric morphism from Y to X, such that Y has a large Grothendieck group.

We define a quasi–projective reduction of a complex algebraic variety X to be a regular map from X to a quasi–projective variety that is universal with respect to regular maps from X to quasi–projective varieties. A toric quasi–projective reduction is the analogous notion in the category of toric varieties. For a given toric variety X we first construct a toric quasi–projective reduction. Then we show that X has a quasi–projective reduction if and only if its toric quasi–projective reduction is surjective. We apply this result to characterize when the action of a subtorus on a quasi–projective toric variety admits a categorical quotient in the category of quasi–projective varieties. Generalizing toric varieties, we introduce toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. The main result in this paper is an explicit calculation of the orbifold Chow ring of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. As an application, we prove that the orbifold Chow ring of the toric Deligne-Mumford stack associated to a simplicial toric variety is a flat deformation of (but is not necessarily isomorphic to) the Chow ring of a crepant resolution.

We give equivalent and sufficient criteria for the automorphism group of a complete toric variety, respectively a Gorenstein toric Fano variety, to be reductive. In particular we show that the automorphism group of a Gorenstein toric Fano variety is reductive, if the barycenter of the associated reflexive polytope is zero. Furthermore a sharp bound on the dimension of the reductive automorphism group of a complete toric variety is proven by studying the set of Demazure roots.

A non-degenerate toric variety X is called S-homogeneous if the subgroup of the automorphism group Aut(X) generated by root subgroups acts on X transitively. We prove that maximal S-homogeneous toric varieties are in bijection with pairs (P,𝒜), where P is an abelian group and 𝒜 is a finite collection of elements in P such that 𝒜 generates the group P and for every a𝒜 the element a is contained in the semigroup generated by 𝒜?{a}. We show that any non-degenerate homogeneous toric variety is a big open toric subset of a maximal S-homogeneous toric variety. In particular, every homogeneous toric variety is quasiprojective. We conjecture that any non-degenerate homogeneous toric variety is S-homogeneous.

The equivariant cohomology of a space with a group action is not only a ring but also an algebra over the cohomology ring of the classifying space of the acting group. We prove that toric manifolds (i.e. compact smooth toric varieties) are isomorphic as varieties if and only if their equivariant cohomology algebras are weakly isomorphic. We also prove that quasitoric manifolds, which can be thought of as a topological counterpart to toric manifolds, are equivariantly homeomorphic if and only if their equivariant cohomology algebras are isomorphic.

In [19], A. King states the following conjecture: Any smooth complete toric variety has a tilting bundle whose summands are line bundles. The goal of this paper is to prove Kings conjecture for the following types of smooth complete toric varieties: (i) Any d-dimensional smooth complete toric variety with splitting fan. (ii) Any d-dimensional smooth complete toric variety with Picard number 2. (iii) The blow up of any smooth complete minimal toric surface at T-invariants points.Mathematics Subject Classification (1991): 14F05; 14M25Partially supported by BFM2001-3584.

We show that the number of rational points of a subgroup inside a toric variety over a finite field defined by a homogeneous lattice ideal can be computed via Smith normal form of the matrix whose columns constitute a basis of the lattice. This generalizes and yields a concise toric geometric proof of the same fact proven purely algebraically by Lopez and Villarreal for the case of a projective space and a standard homogeneous lattice ideal of dimension one. We also prove a Nullstellensatz type theorem over a finite field establishing a one to one correspondence between subgroups of the dense split torus and certain homogeneous lattice ideals. As application, we compute the main parameters of generalized toric codes on subgroups of the torus of Hirzebruch surfaces, generalizing the existing literature.

For a complete, smooth toric variety Y, we describe the graded vector space ${T_Y^1}$ . Furthermore, we show that smooth toric surfaces are unobstructed and that a smooth toric surface is rigid if and only if it is Fano. For a given toric surface we then construct homogeneous deformations by means of Minkowski decompositions of polyhedral subdivisions, compute their images under the Kodaira-Spencer map, and show that they span ${T_Y^1}$ .
