A rigorous classical analytic frequency domain model of confined optical wave propagation along 2D bent slab waveguides and curved dielectric interfaces is investigated, based on a piecewise ansatz for bend mode profiles in terms of Bessel and Hankel functions. This approach provides a clear picture of the behaviour of bend modes, concerning their decay for large radial arguments or effects of varying bend radius. Fast and accurate routines are required to evaluate Bessel functions with large complex orders and large arguments. Our implementation enabled detailed studies of bent waveguide properties, including higher order bend modes and whispering gallery modes, their interference patterns, and issues related to bend mode normalization and orthogonality properties. 相似文献

AbstactAbstact This paper reviews numerical and approximate methods for the modal analysis of general optical dielectric waveguides with emphasis on recent developments. Six groups of methods are reviewed, covering (1) the finite-element method, (2) the finite-difference method, (3) the integral-equation method, (4) methods based on series expansion, (5) approximate methods based on separation of variables, and (6) methods that do not fit into the above groups, ranging from the specialized ones for analysing restricted classes of waveguides to the most general ones for analysing inhomogeneous, arbitrarily-shaped, anisotropic waveguides. Some suggestions with regard to the selection of methods for particular applications are given. 相似文献

Based on the polynomial interpolation, a new finite difference (FD)
method in solving the full-vectorial guided-modes for step-index optical
waveguides is
proposed. The discontinuities of the normal components of the electric
field across abrupt dielectric interfaces are considered in the absence of
the limitations of scalar and semivectorial approximation, and the present
FD scheme can be applied to both uniform and non-uniform mesh grids. The
modal propagation constants and field distributions for buried rectangular
waveguides and optical rib waveguides are presented. The hybrid nature of
the vectorial modes is demonstrated and the singular behaviours of the minor
field components in the corners are observed. Moreover, solutions are in good
agreement with those published early, which tests the validity of the

The rectangular dielectric waveguide is the most commonly used structure in integrated optics, especially in semi-conductor
diode lasers. Demands for new applications such as high-speed data backplanes in integrated electronics, waveguide filters,
optical multiplexers and optical switches are driving technology toward better materials and processing techniques for planar
waveguide structures. The infinite slab and circular waveguides that we know are not practical for use on a substrate because
the slab waveguide has no lateral confinement and the circular fiber is not compatible with the planar processing technology
being used to make planar structures. The rectangular waveguide is the natural structure. In this review, we have discussed
several analytical methods for analyzing the mode structure of rectangular structures, beginning with a wave analysis based
on the pioneering work of Marcatili. We study three basic techniques with examples to compare their performance levels. These
are the analytical approach developed by Marcatili, the perturbation techniques, which improve on the analytical solutions
and the effective index method with examples.

Electromagnetic TM modes of metallic lamellar reflection or transmission gratings are analyzed by means of the parametric fourier modal method. We show that the resonant optical response of such devices is due to the excitation of guided waves inside the slits. A full-wave modal analysis of two-dimensional, lossy and anisotropic optical waveguides using the finite element method (FEM) is presented. In order to describe the behavior of radiating fields, anisotropic perfectly matched layer boundary conditions are applied for the first time in modal solvers. The approach has been implemented using high order edge elements. The resulting sparse eigenvalue algebraic problem is solved through the Arnoldi method. Rigorous analysis of optical forces between two dielectric planar waveguides immersed in dielectric fluid media 下载免费PDF全文
This work presents a rigorous analysis of optical forces between planar waveguides immersed in an arbitrary background medium. This approach exploits the Minkowski stress tensor formulation, which is compared with a normalized version of the dispersion relation method, showing excellent results agreement for different dielectric fluid media. Due to slot‐waveguide effect, optical forces from TM modes are more sensitive to changes in the fluid refractive index than the TE counterparts. Furthermore, the repulsive optical force from the antisymmetric TM1 mode becomes stronger for higher refractive indexes, whereas the attractive force of the symmetric TM0 mode becomes weaker. The methodology and results presented in this work provide a rigorous analysis of nano‐optomechanical devices actuated by optical forces in a broad range of materials and applications. Therefore, this study may impact areas of light‐induced interactions presenting novel optofluidic and optomechanical functionalities, thus finding applications in nanoscale transport, sensing and manipulation.

The extended boundary condition method is applied to both circular and elliptical regions for calculating cutoff frequencies Vc of weakly guiding optical waveguides, which consist of a uniform cladding and a core with arbitrary shape and index profile. The frequency shift formula method is explained by means of the extended boundary condition method on circular regions. Comparing the method with analytic and other rigorous methods, we show that it is indeed a powerful tool. Numerical results confirm that the mode designation and arrangement order in elliptical and rectangular waveguides are, in general, dependent on the aspect ratio. 相似文献

Currently, the minimum feature size fabricated is about 15-40 nm. The resolution of Fresnel zone plates is limited by the width of the outermost zone. Although the photon sieves make it possible to focus soft X-rays to spot sizes smaller than the diameter of the smallest pinhole they have low diffraction efficiency. In order to foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses of them, we propose a new model which is composed of Fresnel zone and pinholes and give its fast Fourier algorithm. The simulation results demonstrate that the resolution of photon sieves is not better than that of Fresnel zone plates in low order of local rings. In this case, we can substitute pinholes for Fresnel zone in photon sieves. Resolution is nearly a constant, and also the diffraction efficiency improves. 相似文献

A new formula has been proposed for analyzing arbitrary shaped-gratings. The formula is in very simple form, is always suitable for all the gratings of arbitrary profiles, any depth, and any permittivity. The new formula has a character of satisfying rigorously the energy-flux conservation. The effectiveness and its characters have been confirmed by numerical examples. The parametric formulation of the combined boundary conditions method (CBCM) with spatial adaptive resolution is extended to multilayered structures of strip gratings. Eigenvalue spectrum analysis for temporal signals of Kerr optical frequency combs based on nonlinear Fourier transform 下载免费PDF全文
Based on the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation(NLSE) with damping, detuning, and driving terms describing the evolution of signals in a Kerr microresonator, we apply periodic nonlinear Fourier transform(NFT) to the study of signals during the generation of the Kerr optical frequency combs(OFCs). We find that the signals in different states, including the Turing pattern, the chaos, the single soliton state, and the multi-solitons state, can be distinguished according to different distributions of the eigenvalue spectrum. Specially, the eigenvalue spectrum of the single soliton pulse is composed of a pair of conjugate symmetric discrete eigenvalues and the quasi-continuous eigenvalue spectrum with eye-like structure.Moreover, we have successfully demonstrated that the number of discrete eigenvalue pairs in the eigenvalue spectrum corresponds to the number of solitons formed in a round-trip time inside the Kerr microresonator. This work shows that some characteristics of the time-domain signal can be well reflected in the nonlinear domain. 相似文献
