This paper explores a differential game between a policy maker and a profit maximizing entrepreneur in which production generates pollution. The government levies a pollution tax on output and uses the tax received for pollution abatement. The entrepreneur determines the level of output. A feedback Nash equilibrium is derived. Using more specific functional forms, the game is extended to cover the multiple firm case.  相似文献

Two competing manufacturers provide a homogeneous market with substitutable products and want to maximize their profits. Each firm may advertise its brand, with a positive effect on its own brand and negative on the competitor's one. Moreover, each firm may choose an advertising medium to use among several available media. We assume that the advertising effect on demand is mediated by the goodwill variable and that a competitor's interference may be represented as a proportional reduction of the virtual goodwill. We model the manufacturers' problem as a noncooperative game under complete information and discuss the existence and features of its Nash equilibria.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the stability properties of the class of capital accumulation games introduced by Fershtman and Muller (Ref. 1). Both discrete and continuous time versions are discussed. It is shown that the open-loop Nash equilibrium solutions for both games are characterized by a general saddle-point property, a result best known from the turnpike literature in optimal growth theory. In the case of zero discount rates, an even stronger result can be derived: As long as the Hessian matrix of the instantaneous profit functions has a quasidominant diagonal, no pure imaginary roots are possible.The authors thank J. This survey reviews the applications of differential game theory in analyzing issues in the economic literature. The needs of the economic discipline are juxtaposed with the merits of various existing types of differential games. We consider a cooperative advertising channel consisting of a manufacturer selling its product through a retailer in competition with another independent retailer. The manufacturer subsidizes its retailer’s advertising only when a certain threshold is positive. Leitmann (Ref. 1) introduced coordinate transformations to derive global optima of a class of dynamic optimization problems. We present applications of this method to derive open-loop Nash equilibria for finite-time horizon differential games. The method of coordinate transformations is especially useful in cases where the original game does not satisfy the global curvature conditions normally imposed in sufficient optimality conditions.  相似文献

Advertising in a Differential Oligopoly Game   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We illustrate a differential oligopoly game where firms compete à la Cournot in homogeneous goods in the market phase and invest in advertising activities aimed at increasing the consumers reservation price. Such investments produce external effects, characterizing the advertising activity as a public good. We derive the open-loop and closed-loop Nash equilibria, and show that the properties of the equilibria depend on the curvature of the market demand function. The comparative assessment of these equilibria shows that the firms advertising efforts are larger in the open-loop equilibrium than in the closed-loop equilibrium. We also show that a cartel involving all the firms, setting both output levels and advertising efforts, may produce a steady state where the social welfare level is higher than the social welfare levels associated with both open-loop and closed-loop noncooperative settings.  相似文献

In Leitmann (Ref. 1), a coordinate transformation method was introduced to obtain global solutions for free problems in the calculus of variations. This direct method was extended and broadened in Carlson (Ref. 2) and later in Leitmann (Ref. 3). The applicability of the original work of Leitmann (Ref. 1) was further developed in Dockner and Leitmann (Ref. 4) to include the class of open-loop dynamic games. In the present work, we improve the results of Ref. 4 in two directions. First, we enlarge the class of open-loop dynamic games to permit coupling among the dynamic equations via the states of the players; second, we incorporate the modifications given in Refs. 2 and 3. Our results greatly increase the applicability of this method. An example arising from the harvesting of a renewable resource is presented to illustrate the utility of our results.  相似文献

Two manufacturers produce substitutable goods for a homogeneous market. The advertising efforts of the two manufacturers determine the demand for the goods and interfere negatively with each other. The demand of each good is a piecewise linear function of the product goodwill, and the latter is a linear function of advertising efforts. In a game with two competing profit-maximizing manufacturers who have access to a set of several advertising media, the pure-strategy Nash equilibria are characterized and their existence is shown.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a class of differential games in which the game ends when a subset of its state variables reaches a certain target at the terminal time. A special feature of the game is that its horizon is not fixed at the outset, but is determined endogenously by the actions of the players; conditions characterizing a feedback Nash equilibrium (FNE) solution of the game are derived for the first time. Equilibria in dynamic games are formulated often under the assumption that the players have full knowledge of the dynamics to which they are subject. Here, we formulate equilibria in which players are looking for robustness and take model uncertainty explicitly into account in their decisions. Specifically, we consider feedback Nash equilibria in indefinite linear-quadratic differential games on an infinite time horizon. Model uncertainty is represented by a malevolent input which is subject to a cost penalty or to a direct bound. We derive conditions for the existence of robust equilibria in terms of solutions of sets of algebraic Riccati equations.  相似文献

We present existence and uniqueness results for a hierarchical or Stackelberg equilibrium in a two-player differential game with open-loop information structure. There is a known convexity condition ensuring the existence of a Stackelberg equilibrium, which was derived by Simaan and Cruz (Ref. 1). This condition applies to games with a rather nonconflicting structure of their cost criteria. By another approach, we obtain here new sufficient existence conditions for an open-loop equilibrium in terms of the solvability of a terminal-value problem of two symmetric Riccati differential equations and a coupled system of Riccati matrix differential equations. The latter coupled system appears also in the necessary conditions, but contrary to the above as a boundary-value problem. In case that the convexity condition holds, both symmetric equations are of standard type and admit globally a positive-semidefinite solution. But the conditions apply also to more conflicting situations. Then, the corresponding Riccati differential equations may be of H-type. We obtain also different uniqueness conditions using a Lyapunov-type approach. The case of time-invariant parameters is discussed in more detail and we present a numerical example.  相似文献

This paper discusses an extension of the currently available theory of noncooperative dynamic games to game models whose state equations are of order higher than one. In a discrete-time framework, it first elucidates the reasons why the theory developed for first-order systems is not applicable to higher-order systems, and then presents a general procedure to obtain an informationally unique Nash equilibrium solution in the presence of random disturbances. Cooperative Advertising in a Marketing Channel   总被引:21,自引:0,他引:21  
This paper examines dynamic advertising and promotion strategies in a marketing channel where the retailer promotes the manufacturer product and the manufacturer spends on advertising to build a stock of goodwill. We assume that sales depend on goodwill and promotion activities and that there are decreasing marginal returns to goodwill. Two scenarios are studied. First, the manufacturer and retailer determine noncooperatively their respective strategies. Second, the game is played à la Stackelberg with the manufacturer as the leader who supports partially the cost of the promotion activities of the retailer. In both cases, stationary Markovian strategies are characterized. These scenarios are examined also in the absence of decreasing marginal effect of goodwill on sales. The results show that, whether or not the goodwill stock has a decreasing marginal effect on sales, the cooperative advertising program is a coordinating mechanism in the marketing channel, i.e., both players receive higher payoffs.  相似文献

In this paper, we study Nash equilibrium payoffs for two-player nonzero-sum stochastic differential games via the theory of backward stochastic differential equations. We obtain an existence theorem and a characterization theorem of Nash equilibrium payoffs for two-player nonzero-sum stochastic differential games with nonlinear cost functionals defined with the help of doubly controlled backward stochastic differential equations. Our results extend former ones by Buckdahn et al. (2004) [3] and are based on a backward stochastic differential equation approach.  相似文献
