This letter concerns the paper "Intraspecific and geographic variation of West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus spp.) vocalizations" [Nowacek et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 114, 66-69 (2003)]. The purpose here is to correct the fundamental frequency range and information on intraindividual variation in the vocalizations of Amazonian manatees reported by Nowacek et al. (2003) in citing the paper "Signature information and individual recognition in the isolation calls of Amazonian manatees, Trichechus inunguis (Mammalia: Sirenia)" [Sousa-Lima et al., Anim. Behav. 63, 301-310 (2002)].  相似文献

Nonlinear phenomena in the natural howling of a dog-wolf mix   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
It was reported to the first author that a female dog-wolf mix showed anomalously rough-sounding vocalization. Spectral analysis of recordings of the vocalization revealed frequency occurrences of subharmonics, biphonation (two independent pitches) and chaos. Since these nonlinear phenomena are currently widely discussed as integral to mammalian vocalization [Wilden et al., Bioacoustics 9, 171-196 (1988)] or as indicators of vocal pathologies [Herzel et al., J. Speech Hearing Res. 37, 1008-1019 (1994); Riede et al., Z. Sgtkde 62 Suppl: 198-203 (1997)], we sought to understand the production mechanism of the observed vocal instabilities. First the frequency of nonlinear phenomena in the calls was determined for the female and four additional individuals. It turned out that these phenomena appear, but much less frequently in the repertoire of the four other animals. The larynges of the female and two other individuals were dissected post mortem. There was no apparent asymmetry of the vocal folds but a slight asymmetry of the arytenoid cartilages. The most pronounced difference, however, was an upward extension of both vocal folds of the female. This feature is reminiscent of "vocal lips" (syn. "vocal membranes") in some primates and bats. Spectral analysis of the female's voice showed clear similarities with an intensively studied voice of a human who produces biphonation intentionally. Finally, the possible communicative relevance of nonlinear phenomena is discussed.  相似文献

The indirect auditory feedback from one's own voice arises from sound reflections at the room boundaries or from sound reinforcement systems. The relative variations of indirect auditory feedback are quantified through room acoustic parameters such as the room gain and the voice support, rather than the reverberation time. Fourteen subjects matched the loudness level of their own voice (the autophonic level) to that of a constant and external reference sound, under different synthesized room acoustics conditions. The matching voice levels are used to build a set of equal autophonic level curves. These curves give an indication of the amount of variation in voice level induced by the acoustic environment as a consequence of the sidetone compensation or Lombard effect. In the range of typical rooms for speech, the variations in overall voice level that result in a constant autophonic level are on the order of 2 dB, and more than 3 dB in the 4 kHz octave band. By comparison of these curves with previous studies, it is shown that talkers use acoustic cues other than loudness to adjust their voices when speaking in different rooms.  相似文献

Interest in the possibility of magnetic character for oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb) has been recently stimulated by the observations of muon spin-lattice relaxation effects studied (Nagamine et al., Proc Jpn Acad Ser B Phys Biol Sci 83:120–126, 2007) with the muon-spin rotation (μSR) technique. In view of this, we have carried out first-principles electronic structure investigations involving Hartree–Fock theory combined with many body perturbation effects for the singlet and triplet states of OxyHb. Our results indicate that using two recent x-ray structural data (Paoli et al., J Mol Biol 256:775, 1996; Park et al., J Mol Biol 360:690, 2006) for OxyHb, for only Hartree–Fock theory without many-body effects included, the singlet state lies above the triplet state by energies of about 0.08 and 0.13 a.u. for the two structures in Paoli et al. (J Mol Biol 256:775, 1996) and Park et al. (J Mol Biol 360:690, 2006). Incorporation of many-body effects by the perturbation method reverses the order, with the triplet state located 0.18 and 0.14 a.u. above the singlet state for the structures in Paoli et al. (J Mol Biol 256:775, 1996) and Park et al. (J Mol Biol 360:690, 2006). Physical reasons for these relative orderings of the singlet and triplet states will be discussed. It is clear that OxyHb by itself would be in a singlet state at room temperature or below, since from our calculation, the triplet state lies about KT above the singlet state with T having the value of 44,098 K and 56,449 K for the two structural data in Paoli et al. (J Mol Biol 256:775, 1996) and Park et al. (J Mol Biol 360:690, 2006). As regards the muon spin-lattice relaxation effects obtained by recent μSR measurements (by Nagamine et al., Proc Jpn Acad Ser B Phys Biol Sci 83:120–126, 2007) at room temperature, the sensitive dependence of the singlet-triplet separation on many-body effects in our investigation suggests that it is possible that the singlet-triplet separation could be reversed or reduced significantly when a muon is trapped near an oxygen atom of the oxygen molecule, allowing the triplet to be occupied at room temperature and lead to significant muon spin-lattice relaxation.  相似文献

The Zwislocki et al. ["Earphones in Audiometry," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 83, 1688-1689 (1988)] Letter to the Editor states that insert earphones have some unresolved technical problems, such as limited frequency response, limited dynamic range and power handling capability, intersubject variability, and hygiene safety. In evaluating circumaural earphones, Zwislocki et al. say that the lack of a standard coupler disqualifies them for audiometry. Since this letter carries the weight of a CHABA committee recommendation, these issues are commented on herein. Section I was written primarily by Mead Killion and Sec. II primarily by Edgar Villchur. For brevity throughout, the authors of the Zwislocki et al. letter will be referred to as "the authors."  相似文献

The interaction of xenon with different proteins in aqueous solution is investigated by (129)Xe NMR spectroscopy. Chemical shifts are measured in horse metmyoglobin, hen egg white lysozyme, and horse cytochrome c solutions as a function of xenon concentration. In these systems, xenon is in fast exchange between all possible environments. The results suggest that nonspecific interactions exist between xenon and the protein exteriors and the data are analyzed in term of parameters which characterize the protein surfaces. The experimental data for horse metmyoglobin are interpreted using a model in which xenon forms a 1:1 complex with the protein and the chemical shift of the complexed xenon is reported (Locci et al., Keystone Symposia "Frontiers of NMR in Molecular Biology VI", Jan. 9--15, 1999, Breckenridge, CO, Abstract E216, p. 53; Locci et al., XeMAT 2000 "Optical Polarization and Xenon NMR of Materials", June 28--30, 2000, Sestri Levante, Italy, p. 46).  相似文献

Significant reductions of stimulated Brillouin (SBS) and Raman (SRS) scattering are measured by adding polarization smoothing (PS) to a random phase plate smoothed beam. The associated plasma waves, as measured by Thomson scattering, are spatially and temporally modified and reveal that the interplay between SBS and SRS has to be taken into account to understand the effect of the smoothing. The results also support the numerical simulations [S. Huller et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2706 (1998); R. Berger et al., Phys. Plasmas 6, 1043 (1999)] predicting a reduction of self-focusing with PS, resulting in a decrease of the maximum laser intensity and consequently of SBS and SRS gains.  相似文献

The two light-sensitive neurons in the crayfish's abdominal sixth ganglion ("caudal photoreceptors," or CPRs), are both primary light sensors and secondary neurons in a mechanosensory pathway. Pei et al. (1996) demonstrated that light enhances the transduction of weak, periodic hydrodynamic stimuli (measured as an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio at the stimulus frequency in the power spectrum of the recorded neural spikes). This has been interpreted as a stochastic resonance effect, in which added light increases the noise intensity of the input to the photoreceptor (possibly through fluctuations in membrane potential), leading to an enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, we discuss the recent demonstration (Bahar et al., 2002) of the correlation between a stochastic-resonance-like effect and an increase in stochastic phase synchronization between the neural response and a periodic mechanical stimulus. We also discuss a novel effect (Bahar et al., 2002) in which light increases the SNR of the second higher harmonic of a periodic input signal, effectively rectifying the input signal. This "second harmonic effect" can also be interpreted in terms of stochastic phase synchronization (Bahar et al., 2002). We review other recent results on the role of stochastic phase synchronization in mediating sensory responses in the crayfish nervous system.  相似文献

This paper contains the second part of a study on a smart panel with five decentralized velocity feedback control units using proof mass electrodynamic actuators [Gonzalez Diaz et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 886 (2008)]. The implementation of five decentralized control loops is analyzed, both theoretically and experimentally. The stability properties of the five decentralized control units have been assessed with the generalized Nyquist criterion by plotting the loci of the eigenvalues of the fully populated matrix of frequency response functions between the five error signals and five input signals to the amplifiers driving the actuators. The control performance properties have been assessed in terms of the spatially averaged response of the panel measured with a scanning laser vibrometer and the total sound power radiated measured in an anechoic room. The two analyses have shown that reductions of up to 10 dB in both vibration response and sound radiation are measured at low audio frequencies, below about 250 Hz.  相似文献

Sentences spoken "clearly" are significantly more intelligible than those spoken "conversationally" for hearing-impaired listeners in a variety of backgrounds [Picheny et al., J. Speech Hear. Res. 28, 96-103 (1985); Uchanski et al., ibid. 39, 494-509 (1996); Payton et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 95, 1581-1592 (1994)]. While producing clear speech, however, talkers often reduce their speaking rate significantly [Picheny et al., J. Speech Hear. Res. 29, 434-446 (1986); Uchanski et al., ibid. 39, 494-509 (1996)]. Yet speaking slowly is not solely responsible for the intelligibility benefit of clear speech (over conversational speech), since a recent study [Krause and Braida, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 112, 2165-2172 (2002)] showed that talkers can produce clear speech at normal rates with training. This finding suggests that clear speech has inherent acoustic properties, independent of rate, that contribute to improved intelligibility. Identifying these acoustic properties could lead to improved signal processing schemes for hearing aids. To gain insight into these acoustical properties, conversational and clear speech produced at normal speaking rates were analyzed at three levels of detail (global, phonological, and phonetic). Although results suggest that talkers may have employed different strategies to achieve clear speech at normal rates, two global-level properties were identified that appear likely to be linked to the improvements in intelligibility provided by clear/normal speech: increased energy in the 1000-3000-Hz range of long-term spectra and increased modulation depth of low frequency modulations of the intensity envelope. Other phonological and phonetic differences associated with clear/normal speech include changes in (1) frequency of stop burst releases, (2) VOT of word-initial voiceless stop consonants, and (3) short-term vowel spectra.  相似文献

High harmonic generation (HHG) of intense infrared laser radiation (Ferray et al., J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 21:L31, 1988; McPherson et al., J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 4:595, 1987) enables coherent vacuum-UV (VUV) to soft-X-ray sources. In the usual setup, energetic femtosecond laser pulses are strongly focused into a gas jet, restricting the interaction length to the Rayleigh range of the focus. The average photon flux is limited by the low conversion efficiency and the low average power of the complex laser amplifier systems (Keller, Nature 424:831, 2003; Südmeyer et al., Nat. Photonics 2:599, 2008; Röser et al., Opt. Lett. 30:2754, 2005; Eidam et al., IEEE J. Sel. Top. Quantum Electron. 15:187, 2009) which typically operate at kilohertz repetition rates. This represents a severe limitation for many experiments using the harmonic radiation in fields such as metrology or high-resolution imaging. Driving HHG with novel high-power diode-pumped multi-megahertz laser systems has the potential to significantly increase the average photon flux. However, the higher average power comes at the expense of lower pulse energies because the repetition rate is increased by more than a thousand times, and efficient HHG is not possible in the usual geometry. So far, two promising techniques for HHG at lower pulse energies were developed: external build-up cavities (Gohle et al., Nature 436:234, 2005; Jones et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94:193, 2005) and resonant field enhancement in nanostructured targets (Kim et al., Nature 453:757, 2008). Here we present a third technique, which has advantages in terms of ease of HHG light extraction, transverse beam quality, and the possibility to substantially increase conversion efficiency by phase-matching (Paul et al., Nature 421:51, 2003; Ren et al., Opt. Express 16:17052, 2008; Serebryannikov et al., Phys. Rev. E (Stat. Nonlinear Soft Matter Phys.) 70:66611, 2004; Serebryannikov et al., Opt. Lett. 33:977, 2008; Zhang et al., Nat. Phys. 3:270, 2007). The interaction between the laser pulses and the gas occurs in a Kagome-type Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fiber (HC-PCF) (Benabid et al., Science 298:399, 2002), which reduces the detection threshold for HHG to only 200 nJ. This novel type of fiber guides nearly all of the light in the hollow core (Couny et al., Science 318:1118, 2007), preventing damage even at intensities required for HHG. Our fiber guided 30-fs pulses with a pulse energy of more than 10 μJ, which is more than five times higher than for any other photonic crystal fiber (Hensley et al., Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO), IEEE Press, New York, 2008).

Entropic contributions to the stability of solids are very well understood and the mixing entropy has been used for forming various solids, for instance such as inverse spinels, see Nawrotsky et al., J. Inorg. Nucl. Chem. 29 , 2701 (1967) [1]. A particular development was related to high entropy alloys by Yeh et al., Adv. Eng. Mater. 6 , 299 (2004) [2] and Cantor et al., Mater. Sci. Eng. A 375–377 , 213 (2004) [3] (for recent reviews see Zhang et al., Prog. Mater. Sci. 61 , 1 (2014) [4] and Tsai et al., Mater. Res. Lett. 2 , 107 (2014) [5]) in which the configurational disorder is responsible for forming simple solid solutions and which are thoroughly studied for various applications especially due to their mechanical properties, e.g. Gludovatz et al., Science 345 , 1153 (2014) [6] and Lu et al., Sci. Rep. 4 , 6200 (2014) [7], but also electrical properties, Kozelj et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113 , 107001 (2014) [8], hydrogen storage, Kao et al., Int. J. Hydrogen Energy 35 , 9046 (2010) [9], magnetic properties, Zhang et al., Sci. Rep. 3 , 1455 (2013) [10]. Many unexplored compositions and properties still remain for this class of materials due to their large phase space. In a recent report it has been shown that the configurational disorder can be used for stabilizing simple solid solutions of oxides, which should normally not form solid solutions, see Rost et al., Nature Commun. 6 , 8485 (2015) [11] these new materials were called ”entropy‐stabilized oxides”. In this pioneering report, it was shown that mixing five equimolar binary oxides yielded, after heating at high temperature and quenching, an unexpected rock salt structure compound with statistical distribution of the cations in a face centered cubic lattice. Following this seminal study, we show here that these high entropy oxides (named HEOx hereafter) can be substituted by aliovalent elements with a charge compensation mechanism. This possibility largely increases the potential development of new materials by widening their (already complex) phase space. As a first example, we report here that at least one HEOx composition exhibits colossal dielectric constants, which could make it very promising for applications as large‐k dielectric materials. BACKGROUND: After total laryngectomy, the interruption of the upper digestive tube and the section of the cricopharyngeal segment alter the high-pressure zone of the pharyngoesophageal transition, which will not only start to have a digestive function, but also be stimulated to take on the production of voice and speech. The pressure observed in the cricopharyngeal segment seems to act as a critical factor for the development of esophageal sound production, and manometry is the procedure capable of quantifying the pressure observed in this region. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the current study was to assess the upper esophageal sphincter pressure in laryngectomized patients who are either successful or unsuccessful esophageal speakers, both at rest and during esophageal phonation, using manometry. METHODS: Twenty laryngectomized persons aged 32 to 83 years (mean, 44.2 years) were submitted to evaluation by a speech pathologist and divided into two groups, ie, successful esophageal speakers (N=12) and unsuccessful esophageal speakers (N=8), according to a scale validated by Wepman et al (1953). The upper esophageal sphincter (UES) pressure was assessed by manometry both at rest and during the following voice emissions in Portuguese: the vowel "a," the monosyllable "pa," and the sentence "papai papou pipoca." The amplitude, the duration of the pressure wave, and the area under the curve were measured. RESULTS: At rest, the mean UES pressure was 11.83 mm Hg for successful esophageal speakers and 9.92 mm Hg for unsuccessful esophageal speakers, with no significant difference between groups; the mean for the two groups as a whole was 11.06 mm Hg. During the voice and speech sequence tests, no significant difference was observed when the emissions in Portuguese of "a," "pa," and the sentence were analyzed separately. CONCLUSION: As the pressure observed at rest did not differ between the successful esophageal speakers and the unsuccessful esophageal speakers, and the amplitude, the duration of the pressure wave, and the area under the amplitude x duration curve were also equal for both groups, we conclude that the cricopharyngeal segment pressure is not a preponderant factor for the acquisition of esophageal voice and speech.  相似文献

Teachers adjust their voice levels under different classroom acoustics conditions, even in the absence of background noise. Laboratory experiments have been conducted in order to understand further this relationship and to determine optimum room acoustic conditions for speaking. Under simulated acoustic environments, talkers do modify their voice levels linearly with the measure voice support, and the slope of this relationship is referred to as room effect. The magnitude of the room effect depends highly on the instruction used and on the individuals. Group-wise, the average room effect ranges from -0.93 dB/dB, with free speech, to -0.1 dB/dB with other less demanding communication tasks as reading and talking at short distances. The room effect for some individuals can be as strong as -1.7 dB/dB. A questionnaire investigation showed that the acoustic comfort for talking in classrooms, in the absence of background noise, is correlated to the decay times derived from an impulse response measured from the mouth to the ears of a talker, and that there is a maximum of preference for decay times between 0.4 and 0.5 s. Teachers with self-reported voice problems prefer higher decay times to speak in than their healthy colleagues.  相似文献

Dispersion compensating fibers (DCF) are the most widely used technology for dispersion compensation. A DCF without Raman amplification introduces extra loss in the system, thus increasing the need for gain in the discrete amplifiers and degrading the noise performance. The idea to additionally use the DCF as a Raman gain medium was originally proposed by Hansen et al. in 1998. [1] This was quickly followed by Emori et al., who demonstrated a broadband, loss less DCF using multiple-wavelength Raman pumping. [2] DCF is a good Raman gain medium, due to a relatively high germanium doping level and a small effective area. To get sufficient gain with a reasonable pump power, a discrete Raman amplifier has to contain several kilometers of fiber, adding extra dispersion to the system that must be handled in the overall dispersion management. Dispersion compensating Raman amplifiers integrates two key functions: dispersion compensation and discrete Raman amplification into a single component.  相似文献

Mongolian "throat singing" can be performed in different modes. In Mongolia, the bass-type is called Kargyraa. The voice source in bass-type throat singing was studied in one male singer. The subject alternated between modal voice and the throat singing mode. Vocal fold vibrations were observed with high-speed photography, using a computerized recording system. The spectral characteristics of the sound signal were analyzed. Kymographic image data were compared to the sound signal and flow inverse filtering data from the same singer were obtained on a separate occasion. It was found that the vocal folds vibrated at the same frequency throughout both modes of singing. During throat singing the ventricular folds vibrated with complete but short closures at half the frequency of the true vocal folds, covering every second vocal fold closure. Kymographic data confirmed the findings. The spectrum contained added subharmonics compared to modal voice. In the inverse filtered signal the amplitude of every second airflow pulse was considerably lowered. The ventricular folds appeared to modulate the sound by reducing the glottal flow of every other vocal fold vibratory cycle.  相似文献
