Isoprene is the most abundant volatile organic compound in the atmosphere after methane. While gas-phase processes have been widely studied, the chemistry of isoprene in aqueous environments is less well known. Nevertheless, some experiments have reported unexpected reactivity at the air-water interface. In this work, we have carried out combined quantum-classical molecular dynamics simulations of isoprene at the air-water interface, as well as ab initio and density functional theory calculations on isoprene-water complexes. We report the first calculation of the thermodynamics of adsorption of isoprene at the water surface, examine how hydration influences its electronic properties and reactivity indices, and estimate the OH-initiated oxidation rate. Our study indicates that isoprene interacts with the water surface mainly through H−π bonding. This primary interaction mode produces strong fluctuations of the π and π* bond stabilities, and therefore of isoprene's chemical potential, nucleophilicity and ionization potential, anticipating significant dynamical effects on its reactivity at the air-water interface. Using data from the literature and free energies reported in our work, we have estimated the rate of the OH-initiated oxidation process at the air-water interface (5.0×1012 molecule cm−3 s−1) to be about 7 orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding rate in the gas phase (8.2×105 molecule cm−3 s−1). Atmospheric implications of this result are discussed.  相似文献

Aggregation properties of biodegradable ammonium surfactants containing amide and ester groups in the bulk and at the air-water interface were investigated as a function of surfactant tail length m using dynamic light scattering and surface tension experimental methods. The results indicate that surfactants containing an ester group in the structure display higher aggregation ability in the volume and form more densely packed layer of molecules at the air-water interface than those with an amide group. The results of physical measurements were correlated with 3D models of respective surfactant molecules. As the results indicate, a surfactant molecule headgroup containing an ester group shows higher flexibility than that with an amide group in its structure, which is documented by somewhat smaller headgroup size and denser packing at the air-water interface.  相似文献

Oligoethyleneoxide spacer groups in polymerizable surfactants   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Cationic and zwitterionic polymerizable surfactants bearing tri- and tetraethyleneglycol spacer groups between the polymerizable moiety and the surfactant structure were prepared and polymerized. Monomers and polymers were investigated with respect to their aggregation behavior in aqueous systems and compared to analogous monomers and polymers lacking spacer groups. In the case of the monomeric surfactants, the spacer groups depress both the Kraffttemperature and the critical micelle concentration. the area occupied per molecule at the air-water interface is substantially enlarged by the spacers, whereas the depression of surface tension is nearly constant. Although the monomers with and without spacers are true surfactants, all the polymers are water-insoluble, but form monomolecular layers at the air-water interface. In analogy to the monomer behavior, the incorporation of the spacer groups increases the area occupied per repeat unit at the air-water interface substantially, but hardly affects the surface activity.  相似文献

The two-dimensional (2D) center-of-mass diffusion, D, of end-tethered poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMOx) lipopolymer chains was studied in a Langmuir monolayer at the air-water interface using wide-field single molecule fluorescence microscopy. In this case, tethering and stabilization of hydrophilic PMOx chains at the air-water interface is accomplished via end-tethering to lipid molecules forming a hydrophobic anchor. To explore the influence of molecular weight, M n, and surface concentration, c s, on lateral mobility, two different PMOx chain lengths of n = 30 and 50 ( n, number of monomer units) were analyzed over a wide range of c s. Using multiparticle tracking analysis of TRITC-labeled PMOx lipopolymers, we found two regimes of lipopolymer lateral mobility. At low c s, D is independent of surface concentration but increases with decreasing n. Here diffusion properties are well described by the Rouse model. In contrast, at more elevated c s, the data do not follow Rouse scaling but are in good agreement with a free area-area model of diffusion. The current study provides for the first time experimental insight into the 2D center-of-mass diffusion of end-tethered polymers at the air-water interface. The obtained results will be of importance for the understanding of diffusion processes in polymer-tethered phospholipid bilayers mimicking biomembranes at low and high tethering concentrations.  相似文献

We report observations of the changes in the surface structure of lysozyme adsorbed at the air-water interface produced by the chemical denaturant guanidinium chloride. A primary result is the durability of the adsorbed surface layer to denaturation, as compared to the molecule in the bulk solution. Data on the surface film were obtained from X-ray and neutron reflectivity measurements and modeled simultaneously. The behavior of lysozyme in G.HCl solutions was determined by small-angle X-ray scattering. For the air-water interface, determination of the adsorbed protein layer dimensions shows that at low to moderate denaturant concentrations (up to 2 mol L(-1)), there is no significant distortion of the protein's tertiary structure at the interface, as changes in the orientation of the protein are sufficient to model data. At higher denaturant concentrations, time-dependent multilayer formation occurred, indicating molecular aggregation at the surface. Methodologies to predict the protein orientation at the interface, based on amino acid residues' surface affinities and charge, were critiqued and validated against our experimental data.  相似文献

We use a realistic molecular model to study the interfacial behavior of hydrocarbon sulfate surfactants within a self-consistent field model and consider the adsorption both at the air-water interface and at a hydrophobic solid-water interface. We focus on the structural properties of the hemimicelles at the critical interface aggregation concentration (CIAC) for the air-water system and the critical surface aggregation concentration (CSAC) for the solid-water system. The major difference between the two systems is that the liquid interface is penetrable but the solid surface is intrinsically impenetrable for the molecular species. At the LG interface the hemimicelles have a lens shape with their centers of mass positioned slightly toward the aqueous side and feature an aspect ratio of approximately 2, with the long dimension parallel to the interface. Hemimicelle formation occurs below a critical (interfacial) area per molecule and above a critical surface pressure depending on tail length and ionic strength. Hemimicelles are not expected at air-water interfaces for a surfactant with a tail length ( t) lower than 15 CH2 units. In contrast, at a hydrophobic solid the formation of laterally inhomogeneous micelles even takes place for surfactants with the tail length as short as t = 12. This difference is attributed to the screening of the lateral interactions in the vapor phase. The shape of surface hemimicelles is caplike (or half-lens) with an aspect ratio lower than 2 and the long dimension parallel to the solid surface. The tail length, the ionic strength, the adsorption energies, and the surfactant concentration have an effect on the surface micelle properties such as the aggregation number and size and shape.  相似文献

Various amino acid-carrying amphiphiles were synthesized, and the pK values of the attached amino acid residues were investigated at the air-water interface and in aqueous vesicles using pi-A isotherm measurements, (1)H NMR titration, and IR spectroscopy in reflection-adsorption mode. The epsilon-amino group of the Lys residue embedded at the air-water interface displays a significant pK shift (4 or 5 unit) compared with that observed in bulk water, while the pK shift in aqueous vesicles was not prominent (ca. 1 unit). Moreover, pK values of the amino acids at the air-water interface can be tuned simply by control of the subphase ionic strength as well as by molecular design of the amphiphiles. A simple equation based on the dominant contribution by the electrostatic energy to the pK shift reproduces well the surface pressure difference between protonated and unprotonated species, suggesting a reduction in the apparent dielectric constant at the air-water interface. Hydrolysis of a p-nitrophenyl ester derivative was used as a model reaction to demonstrate the use of the Lys-functionalized monolayer. Efficient hydrolysis was observed, even at neutral pH, after tuning of pK for the Lys residue in the monolayer, which is a similar case to that occurring in biological catalysis.  相似文献

Study of the aggregation of human insulin Langmuir monolayer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The human insulin (HI) Langmuir monolayer at the air-water interface was systematically investigated in the presence and absence of Zn(II) ions in the subphase. HI samples were dissolved in acidic (pH 2) and basic (pH 9) aqueous solutions and then spread at the air-water interface. Spectroscopic data of aqueous solutions of HI show a difference in HI conformation at different pH values. Moreover, the dynamics of the insulin protein showed a dependence on the concentration of Zn(II) ions. In the absence of Zn(II) ions in the subphase, the acidic and basic solutions showed similar behavior at the air-water interface. In the presence of Zn(II) ions in the subphase, the surface pressure-area and surface potential-area isotherms suggest that HI may aggregate at the air-water interface. It was observed that increasing the concentration of Zn(II) ions in the acidic (pH 2) aqueous solution of HI led to an increase of the area at a specific surface pressure. It was also seen that the conformation of HI in the basic (pH 9) medium had a reverse effect (decrease in the surface area) with the increase of the concentration of Zn(II) ions in solution. From the compression-decompression cycles we can conclude that the aggregated HI film at air-water interface is not stable and tends to restore a monolayer of monomers. These results were confirmed from UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy analysis. Infrared reflection-absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopy techniques were used to determine the secondary structure and orientation changes of HI by zinc ions. Generally, the aggregation process leads to a conformation change from α-helix to β-strand and β-turn, and at the air-water interface, the aggregation process was likewise seen to induce specific orientations for HI in the acidic and basic media. A proposed surface orientation model is presented here as an explanation to the experimental data, shedding light for further research on the behavior of insulin as a Langmuir monolayer.  相似文献

Docetaxel (DCT) is an antineoplastic drug for the treatment of a wide spectrum of cancers. DCT surface properties as well as miscibility studies with l-alpha-dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), which constitutes the main component of biological membranes, are comprehensively described in this contribution. Penetration studies have revealed that when DCT is injected under DPPC monolayers compressed to different surface pressures, it penetrates into the lipid monolayer promoting an increase in the surface pressure. DCT is a surface active molecule able to decrease the surface tension of water and to form insoluble films when spread on aqueous subphases. The maximum surface pressure reached after compression of a DCT Langmuir film was 13 mN/m. Miscibility of DPPC and DCT in Langmuir films has been studied by means of thermodynamic properties as well as by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) analysis of the mixed films at the air-water interface, concluding that DPPC and DCT are miscible and they form non-ideally mixed monolayers at the air-water interface. Helmholtz energies of mixing revealed that no phase separation occurs. In addition, Helmholtz energies of mixing become more negative with decreasing areas per molecule, which suggests that the stability of the mixed monolayers increases as the monolayers become more condensed. Compressibility values together with BAM images indicate that DCT has a fluidizing effect on DPPC monolayers.

In our previous paper, a method for preparing enormous surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates through the aggregation of silver particles trapped at an air-water interface was reported. Here, further efforts were devoted to investigate the origin of assembling silver particle films by adsorbing nanoparticles from bulk colloids to the air-water interface. It was revealed that it is thermodynamically favorable for a colloidal particle in bulk colloids to adsorb to the air-water interface; however, a finite sorption barrier between it and the nearby particles usually restrains the adsorption process. When an electrolyte such as KCl, which is commonly used as an activating agent for additional SERS enhancement, was added into silver colloids, it largely reduced the sorption barrier. Thus, silver nanoparticles can break through the sorption barrier, pop up, and be trapped at the air-water interface. The trapped silver particles are more inclined to aggregate at the interface than those in bulk colloids due to the increase of van der Waals forces and the reduction of electrostatic forces. The morphology of the as-prepared silver particle films was characterized by scanning electron microscope, and their SERS activity was tested using NaSCN as a probe molecule. The surface enhancement of the silver particle films is about 1-2 orders of magnitude higher compared with that of silver colloids, because most of the silver particles in the films are in the aggregation form that provides enormous SERS enhancement. Furthermore, the stability of such type of films is much better that of colloid solutions.  相似文献

An amphiphilic heteroarm star polymer containing 12 alternating hydrophobic/hydrophilic arms of polystyrene (PS) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) connected to a well-defined rigid aromatic core was studied at the air-water and the air-solid interfaces. At the air-water interface, the molecules spontaneously form pancakelike micellar aggregates which measure up to several microns in diameter and 5 nm in thickness. Upon reduction of the surface area per molecule to 7 nm2, the two-dimensional micelles merged into a dense monolayer. We suggest that confined phase separation of dissimilar polymer arms occurred upon their segregation on the opposite sides of the rigid disklike aromatic core, forcing the rigid cores to adopt a face-on orientation with respect to the interface. Upon transfer onto solid supports the PS chains face the air-film interface making it completely hydrophobic, and the PAA chains were found to collapse and form a thin flattened underlayer. This study points toward new strategies to create large 2D microstructures with facial amphiphilicity and suggests a profound influence of star molecular architecture on the self-assembly of amphiphiles at the air-water interface.  相似文献

Abstract— The title compound forms well-behaved monomolecular films at the air-water interface. The surface pressure-molecular area isotherms change with the pH of the subphase in a manner which suggests that the carboxylic acid group acts as the hydrophylic portion of the molecule with a pKa of –7.3. In compressed monolayers the porphyrin ring appears to be oriented so that the plane of the ring is perpendicular to the surface. Spectroscopic studies of single monolayer films transferred to quartz slides using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique indicate that three distinct species are present in the films, with the amount of each phase depending on the pH of the subphase. One species, present at low pH, is assigned as a monomer on the basis of its optical and fluorescence spectra and its fluorescence lifetime. At low pH this monomer species co-exists with another non-fluorescent aggregated species. For films formed on subphases with pH > 7.3, these two species are converted to a single, weakly fluorescent species which exhibits an unusual absorption spectrum. We postulate that this third species is a constrained aggregate but rule out the possibility of a face-to-face dimer on spectroscopic grounds. For films at the air-water interface specular reflection, indicative of a smooth, highly absorbant film, is observed from monolayers of the title compound. Visual examination of this phenomenon proved to be very useful in assessing the completeness of spreading and the collapse point. Under certain conditions a distinct macroscopic structure is observed in the monolayer film. This structure is interpreted as evidence for the presence of two or more two-dimensional crystalline phases. Support for this view comes from previous measurements of specular reflection on single crystals of tetraphenylporphyrin. There is no indication that variations in the macroscopic structure of the films have any significant effect on the microscopic properties such as the surface pressure-area isotherms.  相似文献

The Langmuir monolayer of aequorin and apoaequorin was studied by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) and polarization-modulated IRRAS techniques. The alpha-helices in the aequorin Langmuir monolayer were parallel to the air-water interface at zero surface pressure. When the surface pressure increased to 15 mN.(m-1), the alpha-helices became tilted and the turns became parallel to the air-water interface. As for apoaequorin, the alpha-helices were also parallel to the air-water interface at 0 mN.m(-1). However, the alpha-helix became tilted and the turns became parallel to the air-water interface quickly at 5 mN.m(-1). With further compression of the apoaequorin Langmuir monolayer, the orientation remained the same. The different behaviors of aequorin and apoaequorin at the air-water interface were explained by the fact that aequorin formed dimers at the air-water interface but apoaequorin was a monomer. It is more difficult for a dimer to be tilted by the compression of the Langmuir monolayer.  相似文献

The design of new molecules with directed interactions to functional molecules as complementary building blocks is one of the main goals of supramolecular chemistry. A new p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene monosubstituted derivative bearing only one alkyl chain with an acid group (C6A3C) has been synthesized. The C6A3C has been successfully used for building Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface. The C6A3C molecule adopts a flatlike orientation with respect to the air-water interface. The molecular structure gives the molecule amphiphilic character, while allowing the control of both the dissociation degree and the molecular conformation at the air-water interface. The C63AC has been combined with pristine fullerene (C60) to form the supramolecular complex C6A3C:C60 in 2:1 molar ratio (CFC). The CFC complex retains the ability of C6A3C to form Langmuir monolayers at the air/water interface. The interfacial molecular arrangement of the CFC complex has been convincingly described by in situ UV-vis reflection spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray reflectivity measurements. Computer simulations complement the experimental data, confirming a perpendicular orientation of the calixarene units of CFC with respect to the air-water interface. This orientation is stabilized by the formation of intermolecular H-bonds. The interfacial monolayer of the CFC supramolecular complex is proposed as a useful model for the well-defined self-assembly of recognition and functional building blocks.  相似文献

Summary The pressure-area curves for neutral monolayers of butyric, valeric, caproic and caprylic acids at the airwater interface were obtained from the surface tension concentration data. Similar curves for the charged monolayers of sodium octanoate and sodium lauryl sulphate in the presence and absence of excess neutral salts were constructed on the basis of the results on surface tension. From the comparison of the pressure area curves of each of these monolayers at air-water and oil-water interfaces under identical conditions, the cohesive pressures of the monolayer at the air-water interface were calculated for different areas per adsorbed molecule using the equation ofDavies. The cohesive pressure was observed to vary linearly with the square of the reciprocal area per adsorbed molecule or ion. From the slope of such linear plot, magnitude of the two-dimensionalvan der Waals constant in each case was estimated. The thickness of the interfacial film was estimated from the comparison of the values of two- and three-dimensionalvan der Waals constants. This is, however, found to be considerably greater than the length of the stretched molecules adsorbed at the interface. When correction for entropy, as suggested byGershfeld is introduced, the film thickness becomes identical with the length of the molecule. Based in part upon the thesis submitted byA. K. Chatterjee for the Ph. D. degree of the Jadavpur University (1966).  相似文献

A morphological analysis is presented for Langmuir films of the diazo dyes Sudan 4 (S4), Sudan 3 (S3), and Sudan red (SR), using Brewster angle microscopy. Stable nonmonomolecular structures are formed at the air-water interface denoted as a plateau in the pressure-area isotherms. Monolayer domains are evident by the contrastless image even before the pressure onset, which grow in size until it reached a condensed monolayer. This behavior resembles that of Langmuir films from simple aromatic fatty acids. Films from all the azo dyes display similar features, according to the surface potential isotherms and in situ polarized UV/vis spectroscopy except for the larger area per molecule occupied by S4 and SR. This is attributed to the presence of CH(3) groups that cause steric hindrance modifying the organization of diazo dye molecules at the air-water interface. UV/vis polarized absorption spectroscopy showed preferential orientation of S4 and S3 on the water surface, while SR molecules lie isotropically. For these three diazo dyes, film absorption was negligible at very large areas per molecule, becoming nonzero only at a critical area coinciding with the onset of surface potential. The critical area is ascribed to the formation of a H-bonded network between water molecules and diazo dye headgroups.  相似文献

Fabrication of Langmuir films at the air-water interface of four linear-dendritic block copolymers (LDBCs) is described. The LDBCs are composed of a linear hydrophilic chain of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and the first four generations of hydrophobic aliphatic polyester dendrons functionalized at the periphery with cyanoazobenzene chromophores. Langmuir films of the LDBCs, coded as PEG-AZOn (n indicates the number of cyanoazobenzene units at the periphery of the dendritic block), have been characterized by a combination of surface pressure versus area per molecule isotherms, UV-vis reflection spectroscopy and Brewster angle microscopy. The observed PEG-AZOn Langmuir film behavior depends strongly on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio. A typical transition, related to PEG chains desorption from the air-water interface into the water subphase is observed for all the LDBCs, except for PEG-AZO16. In addition, PEG-AZO2 and PEG-AZO4 show a second transition whose nature has been studied in detail. Azobenzene chromophore interactions have been shown to be relevant in the organization of PEG-AZOn (n=4, 8 and 16) Langmuir films. Moreover, for PEG-AZO16 the orientation of the azobenzene units has been determined, revealing the formation of a well organized structure of azobenzene moieties at the air-water interface.  相似文献

The aggregation of soluble, nontoxic amyloid beta (Abeta) peptide to beta-sheet containing fibrils is assumed to be a major step in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Interactions of Abeta with neuronal membranes could play a key role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Herein, we study the adsorption of synthetic Abeta peptide to DPPE and DMPE monolayers (dipalmitoyl- and dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine). Both lipids exhibit a condensed monolayer state at 20 degrees C and form a similar lattice. However, at low packing densities (at large area per molecule), the length of the acyl chains determines the phase behavior, therefore DPPE is fully condensed whereas DMPE exhibits a liquid-expanded state with a phase transition at approximately 5-6 mNm(-1). Adsorption of Abeta to DPPE and DMPE monolayers at low surface pressure leads to an increase of the surface pressure to approximately 17 mNm(-1). The same was observed during adsorption of the peptide to a pure air-water interface. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) experiments show no influence of Abeta on the lipid structure. The adsorption kinetics of Abeta to a DMPE monolayer followed by IRRAS (infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy) reveals the phase transition of DMPE molecules from liquid-expanded to condensed states at the same surface pressure as for DMPE on pure water. These facts indicate no specific interactions of the peptide with either lipid. In addition, no adsorption or penetration of the peptide into the lipid monolayers was observed at surface pressures above 30 mNm(-1). IRRAS allows the measurement of the conformation and orientation of the peptide adsorbed to the air-water interface and to a lipid monolayer. In both cases, with lipids at surface pressures below 20 mNm(-1) and at the air-water interface, adsorbed Abeta has a beta-sheet conformation and these beta-sheets are oriented parallel to the interface.  相似文献
