Do Optimal Shapes Exist?

This paper surveys the talk given by the author at the “Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano” in November 2006. It deals with the existence question for shape optimization problems associated to the Dirichlet Laplacian. Existence of solutions is seen from both geometrical and functional (γ-convergence) point of view and is discussed in relationship with the optimality conditions and numerical algorithms. Several examples are given concerning isoperimetric inequalities for eigenvalues and shape control problems. Received: August 2007     

环境评价中不存在污染指标权重的原因

当今环境评价都以权重反映评价指标重要性程度的差异,并且在定权方法上存在不同意见.实际上环评中的指标权重只针对定性指标,对制定了"分级标准"的污染指标并不存在权重概念,更不存在确定权重的问题,这是环评特点.如果环评中不再确定污染指标权重,那么仅此一点已足可改变当今所有环评的评价结果,所以从理论上论证为什么环评领域对污染指标不存在权重问题是十分必要的,也是规范环评方法的一个必要条件.

Let _RM_n^l′ be a category which is equivalent to the category of left R-modules.In this paper,we define afunction F:_RM_n^l→_RM_n^l′ and prove that the functor Fpreserves products,direct limits,injections,surjectios and total esactness.Finally,we show that the functor F is a left-adjoint of the inclusion functor I:_RM_n^l′→_RM_n^l. Hence I:_RM_n^l′ is a renective subcategory of _RM_n^l.

Adjointness Aspects of the Down-Set Functor

The down-set construction, when applied to the category of Boolean frames, can be viewed as a functor into the category of frames with frame homomorphisms subject to various conditions akin to openness. We prove that it has a right adjoint, which is then given by Booleanization, exactly for near openness and one other, closely related property; a similar result is obtained for the finitary case of pseudocomplemented distributive lattices. In addition, we present a characterization of the frames which are down-set frames of Boolean frames.     

Filtrations for the Roots of Ext

We survey the set–theoretic methods of module theory that make it possible to equip roots of the contravariant Ext functor with filtrations built from the small roots. The power of these methods is illustrated by several applications: a solution to the Kaplansky problem on Baer modules and some of the related problems for relative Baer modules, the structure of tilting modules and classes, the structure of Matlis localizations of commutative rings, and in particular cases, proofs of the finitistic dimension conjectures, and of the telescope conjecture for module categories. On the Image of the Totaling Functor

Let A be a differential graded (DG) algebra with a trivial differential over a commutative unital ring. This paper investigates the image of the totaling functor, defined from the category of complexes of graded A-modules to the category of DG A-modules. Specifically, we exhibit a special class of semifree DG A-modules which can always be expressed as the totaling of some complex of graded free A-modules. As a corollary, we also provide results concerning the image of the totaling functor when A is a polynomial ring over a field.

On the Recollements of Functor Categories

This paper is devoted to the study of recollements of functor categories in different levels. In the first part of the paper, we start with a small category \(\mathcal {S}\) and a maximal object s of \(\mathcal {S}\) and construct a recollement of \(\text {Mod-}\mathcal {S}\) in terms of \(\text {Mod-End}_{\mathcal {S}}(s)\) and \(\text {Mod-}(\mathcal {S}\setminus \{s\})\) in four different levels. In case \(\mathcal {S}\) is a finite directed category, by iterating this argument, we get chains of recollements having some interesting applications. In the second part, we start with a recollement of rings and construct a recollement of their path rings, with respect to a finite quiver. Third part of the paper presents some applications, including recollements of triangular matrix rings, an example of a recollement in Gorenstein derived level and recollements of derived categories of N-complexes.

Operators Which Do Not Have the Single Valued Extension Property

In this paper we shall consider the relationships between a local version of the single valued extension property of a bounded operator T  L(X) on a Banach space X and some quantities associated with T which play an important role in Fredholm theory. In particular, we shall consider some conditions for which T does not have the single valued extension property at a point λ_o  C.     

Some Properties of the Functor O β

Predicate Modal Logics Do Not Mix Very Well

The problem of completeness for predicate modal logics is still under investigation, although some results have been obtained in the last few years (cf. [2, 3, 4, 7]). As far as we know, the case of multimodal logics has not been addressed at all. In this paper, we study the combination of modal logics in terms of combining their semantics. We demonstrate by a simple example that in this sense predicate modal logics are not so easily manipulated as propositional ones: mixing two Kripke-complete predicate modal logics (one with the Barcan formula, and the other without) results in a Kripke-incomplete system.     

A Note on the Abelianization Functor

It is well known that the abelianization of a group G can be computed as the cokernel of the diagonal morphism (1_G, 1_G): G → G × G in the category of groups. We generalize this to arbitrary regular subtractive categories, among which are the category of groups, the category of topological groups, and the categories of other group-like structures. We also establish that an abelian category is the same as a regular subtractive category in which every monomorphism is a kernel of some morphism.     

Isomorphism of one-place functors Ext

Let be an associative ring with identity. One considers the category of left (unitary) -modules m and also the contravariant and the covariant functors Ext ¹ ( ,A) and Ext ¹ (A, ): M_z M. One proves the following results: (1) If the homomorphism of -modules A B induces an isomorphism Ext ¹ ( ,A)Ext ¹ ( ,B), then there exist injective -modules J₁ and J₂ such that AJ₁BJ₂. (2) Every functorial morphism Ext ¹ ( ,A)Ext ¹ ( ,B) induces a certain homomorphism of -modules AB.
