We derive the equation connecting the final equilibrium radius of a paraxial azimuth-symmetrical relativistic electron beam propagating in the ion focusing regime with its initial nonequilibrium value. The dependence of the final equilibrium radius and the increment of the rms emittance on the density of the scattering background medium is analyzed.  相似文献

An equation is derived for the envelope of a quasi-stationary relativistic electron beam propagating in a gas-plasma medium. It generalizes the well-known Nordsieck equation to the case of the presence of an external longitudinal magnetic field both under the beam transportation in an ohmic plasma and under ion focusing conditions. A formula for the rms radius of the beam at the stage of intense expansion with regard to a compensating ionic background, multiple scattering, and an external longitudinal magnetic field is found.  相似文献

Boltzmann’s H theorem and variational methods are used to find the temporally asymptotic form of the radial current density profile of a paraxial relativistic electron beam propagating in a scattering gas-plasma medium along a static external magnetic field and a neutralizing ion background. Self-similarity conditions are determined for the steady states of a quasineutral beam plasma generated during the transport of ion beams in a gaseous medium. The self-consistent radial distribution of the beam and plasma densities is taken into account. Under the resulting conditions the radial electric field of the beam-plasma system is linear, and it is possible for beams to be transported without nonlinear distortion of their phase response characteristics or an increase in the effective emittance. A numerical study of the output power characteristics of microwave radiation from a relativistic electron beam (REB) with a virtual cathode in the presence of externally applied longitudinal magnetic field is performed. Typical dependences of the output microwave power of the relativistic vircator system on the external magnetic field strength are obtained, showing a number of local maxima. It is found that the characteristic behavior of the radiation power is determined by the conditions and mechanisms of virtual cathode formation in the presence of external longitudinal magnetic field and a self-magnetic REB field.  相似文献

An adiabatic free-electron laser wiggler for electron beam bunching is described. A free-electron laser naturally bunches an electron beam. When the beam is trapped adiabatically, the emittance of the bunched beam is decreased significantly compared with abrupt trapping. For a 57-period two-meter buncher having poleface magnetic field of 2 T and 10 GW of 100 μm radiation, adiabatic trapping reduces the final emittance by a factor of three  相似文献

A kinetic equation that describes the transverse dynamics of an axisymmetric paraxial relativistic electron beam propagating along an external magnetic field in a gas-plasma medium is derived with allowance for the influence of the self-consistent electromagnetic field on the beam, the effects related to the nonlaminar motion and rotation of the beam electrons at the exit from the injector, and the scattering and energy loss of the beam electrons in their collisions with the neutral particles of the background gas.  相似文献

Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations of the Relativistic Electron Beam (REB) generation in a high current diode immersed in an external magnetic field has been done. The calculations have confirmed that the generated beam is homogeneous and monoenergetic in a broad central region. In the case of cylindrical diode the mixing of electron trajectories has been observed only in a narrow periphery beam region. The angle between particle trajectories and external longitudinal magnetic field varies chaotically from 0° to –25°. This phenomenon suppresses the excitation of two stream instability excited by the REB in the plasma column.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is made of the influence of local nonuniformities of a mirror-configuration magnetic field on oscillations of the space charge and the structure of a long-pulse relativistic electron beam. It is found that the outcome depends on the axial configuration of the nonuniformity. A nonuniformity near the cathode can substantially reduce the amplitude of the oscillations and improve the beam transport. The creation of a nonuniformity far from the cathode leads to an accelerated increase in the oscillations and causes spreading of the transverse structure of the beam. A possible explanation is given for the mechanism responsible for the influence of these local magnetic field nonuniformities assuming reflection of the cathode plasma and electron flux from the magnetic mirror, and also allowing for a jump in the drift velocity. A general kinetic equation for the differential density of fast particles moving in a medium in an external field is derived on the basis of the continuity equation in phase space. An equation is written for the differential flux in the case of fixed target particles. This equation is used to derive equations for fast electrons; account is taken of the coupling of energy-loss and scattering events in an electric field for various particular problems analogous to those studied in the theory of electron transport in the absence of a field. The kinetic equations are used to analyze the conditions governing accelerated motion of electrons in a dielectric in an external electric field in the continuous-deceleration approximation. Account is taken of fluctuations in the energy loss and of multiple scattering. A linear partial differential equation describing the evolution of an initial disturbance of a flat free surface of a thin layer of a viscous magnetic fluid covering a horizontal plate in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, is derived within a system of ferrohydrodynamic and magnetostatic equations. The effect of magnetizing the plate on the stability of the flat free surface is investigated. An estimate is obtained for the minimum value of the tangential component of the magnetization vector of the fluid sufficient to radically alter the pattern of the final breakup of the continuous layer. We studied the formation of Virtual Cathode (VC) by a Relativistic Electron Beam (REB) propagating through a terminating foil into a vacuum region in experimental devices REBEX. The beam properties (homogeneity and angular spread of particle velocities) and arising electromagnetic fields (e.g. equipotentials of VC, internal azimuthal magnetic field) were determined numerically with the help of 2d relativistic electromagnetic currentline code POISSON 2. We were interested in obtaining the dependence of the reflection coefficient of the scattered REB by the created VC on the total beam current, beam energy, external magnetic field and on the length of vacuum drift tube. The results obtained are useful for an additional plasma heating mechanism via a two stream instability generated by the oscillating REB.  相似文献

An investigation is made to determine how inaccuracies in mounting the quadrupole lenses influence the dilution of the transverse emittance of the beam. The study is made for two specific designs of 500 GeV linear colliders, thermal and superconducting. The results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of strong turbulence produced by an external rf field in the plasma of a beam-plasma discharge are presented. The modulation instability of a rf electric field, perpendicular to a constant magnetic field, in the frequency range between the lower-hybrid and ionic Langmuir frequencies, has been investigated. The enhancement in a uniform electrostatic field at the tip of a spheroidal drop is shown to depend on the dielectric constant of the drop material, its initial radius, and the external electric field and to become greater as these increase. The loss of stability of a drop in an external electrostatic field that is accompanied by a very rapid growth in the magnitude of the spheroidal deformation causes a rapid, transient enhancement of the field at its tip. The problem of a magnetic liquid which completely fills a vertical cylindrical cavity in an undeformable horizontal layer of a magnet having the same magnetic properties as the liquid is considered. The entire system is immersed in a uniform vertical magnetic field. in a linear formulation of the problem an approximate solution in the form of series is obtained for the evolution of an initial small deviation of the free surface of the liquid from its flat equilibrium shape. An experiment is performed which shows that the initially flat free surface takes on a stable domed shape as the field strength is increased (from zero) and that a further increase in the field in a certain restricted range leads to the formation of an annular corrugation. The structures observed, which are the result of the nonlinear stage in the development of the initial perturbation, are qualitatively similar to the first two modes of the solution obtained. Zh. A self-similarity approach is used to obtain envelope equations for an annular beam propagating along a magnetic field, and also an electron beam injected at an angle to a magnetic field.
